  • Confession

I was just reading Obama’s prayer.

The prayer reads “Lord — Protect my family and me.  Forgive me my sins, and help me guard against pride and
despair. Give me the wisdom to do what is right and just. And make me
an instrument of your will.”  Here is the link:  Link

That got me thinking.  The Bible says “confess your sins to one another.”  (James 5:6)

What is the worst sin you ever committed?

  • I stole sand from the beach.

  • You have got to be kidding us.

I think it was when I decided to hate my father, because I knew very well that it was wrong. Disobedience is worse than anything. If I did something like that today, knowing what I know about God, I would be an apostate. I was only saved at the time by my ignorance.

  • like im telling the whole internet, when most of my  family doesnt know… lol

  • Half the men or women I fantasized having sex with. hahaha

  • I’ve got so many, I really can’t decide what the worst one I’ve done was.

Probably telling my sister that no one in my family loved her and that she was a mistake and a waste of a person. She was only 5. I still feel horrible about it.

  • Adultery.

  • Too many things too mention.

  • Even as an atheist, this makes me pretty mad. The snatching of Obama’s prayer from the wall– and publishign it– is a gross violation of the man’s most most personal and intimate privacy.

  • Nothing I could be stoned for as far as I recall.

  • @huginn - I fairly sure Obama knew his “prayer” was going to be snatched.

  • I thought all sins were equal? Gawd, this Christianity thing is confusing. I’ll say…sleeping with a man? Is that one on the list of really bad ones?

  • I ain’t tellin.

  • Subscribing to you, Dan. Everything ele pales in comparison.

  • Being as the context of James 5:6 requires the “one another” to be fellow Christ-followers, I’ll opt out on this venue.

  • I really don’t think I’ve anything worth sharing, then again I’m young here’s the deal I’ll answer this again in a few years and see the difference……between now and then…..

  • the drugs, the girls, the money. i live a fast life.

  • “I,
even I, am the one who wipes out your transgressions for My own sake;  and I will not
remember your sins”  God has said.

If God doesn’t remember them, why should I??

  • Seeing as I’m not a believer, denying the Christian god would be my worst sin in the eyes of most.

The greatest fault of my own is one only I should know.

  • @LifeNeedsProtection - Ditto. And I wouldn’t confess to anything on the internet anyway.

  • hahahaha! you think I am telling you dan?!

  • I don’t know about the worst sin I’ve ever committed, but I still feel bad for how I (and many other children) treated a boy in elementary school. I see him almost every time I go to the grocery store where he works and I feel this awful, awful guilt. I want to apologize to him so badly, and yet I’m too chicken. It makes me feel like an awful person.

  • @Zooish - Actually, they’re supposed to go behind everyone and collect their prayers and destroy them so stuff like this doesn’t happen.

  • sin is sin to God.  Us humans are the ones who say one is worse than other…
now, I wonder what I feel like my “worst” sin is…they are all pretty bad.

  • *writes sin on paper*

    *eats paper*

  • I ditched class

  • I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die

  • I think the worst thing I do, particularly because I do it often, is keep my mouth shut when I should stand up for something or someone. I’m sure the Christian scale would rate other things I’ve done as far worse, but of the things I care about, this would be one of the biggies.

  • Is any sin really any worse than any other sin?  I don’t believe so, it is humanity that has given power to sins…  To God, all sin is the same.

Further, I don’t think “Confess your sins to man” means post them on the internet for everyone to see…  It means get an accountability partner to talk to about this kind of stuff…  Or there’s the Catholic way, but I prefer to know who I’m talking to and for it to be mutual…

  • I don’t think sharing on xanga is going to help my cause

  • Actually, my Bible says, in James 5:16 (not 5:6), to confess your faults one to another.  We should seek forgiveness for our sins from those whom we have wronged, but otherwise our sins our between God and ourselves.  Faults are not the same as sins.

  • I like Obama’s handwriting.

  • one sin is pretty much equal to another, so you’ve done one that is enough

  • I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.

  • I have no clue how to rank my sins.

  • i think i’ve committed all of them.  but im not sure.  there’s a few passages in the bible that confuse me and make me think i’ve even murdered…  hate someone and you’ve killed them and all that.  so i guess in that case i have actually committed every sin possible.  but i don’t feel bad for it.  it’s natural.  humans were born to do those things.

  • I ate food from work without paying for it.

  • I have too many faults and sins to mention. I’m just glad God forgives them all because of Christ’s sacrifce.

  • I still cant believe that was published… though he probably knew it would be…

    but aren’t all sins equal?

  • Renouncing the holy spirit.  Regularly.

  • hm, i really couldn’t say.

  • If i told you, your mouth would drop to the floor.

  • @LifeNeedsProtection - o, I like that. lol, honestly, I was rummaging down the comments and saw what you posted, and your right,  why should I? As well as I shouldn’t hold any ill against anyone whos done me wrong. umm…. I guess I should call my sister in law and make up.

  • you want me to try & fit it all in this itty-bitty square????

  • honestly, probably doubting God.

  • and btw every sin in the Bible is equal besides the one that says something about sinning against the spirit or whatever.

  • I’ve committed adultery and killed a lot of people. If you lust with your eyes, you’ve already committed adultery. And if you wished someone was dead, you already murdered them.

  • is there really a sin that is worse than another?

  • I don’t believe that God ranks our sins, so we shouldn’t, either, although we tend to.  We are all sinners (“mistake makers” I recently read) and not one of us is without sin.

I feel my worst sins are those in which I hurt my parents somehow.  They have been so good to me and love me so much, and hurting them, even the remembrance of some bone headed things I did in high school, breaks my heart for what I put them through.

  • i dont think cheating counts if its just a boyfriend… but i mean ive stolen a lot of shit…

  • Despairing, and this on several occasions. From practical experience – my own – I’ve found despair to cause more grief than any other thing mistake I’ve ever committed.

  • I took a girl’s phone number.

I then proceded to call her 17 times in one day.

    …Not really.

  • what ktandie said.

    but just for fun…
    in some people’s eyes, murder.

  • Curious. How do you know that is actually Obama’s?

  • I allowed malice to live in my heart for years. And malice is much more intense than dislike or even hate.I knew it was wrong, and I knew I had to forgive the person, but I didn’t want to because it was just easier to hate him and wish the worst upon him. I eventually got over it and prayed that the hate would be removed from me. Malice is a very hard thing to have in your life. It makes you all around unhappy.

  • @LifeNeedsProtection - God has a lot of forgetting to do as far as I am concerned.  Thanks for reminding me to not dwell on the past!

  • put my selfish desires before my Creator, way to many times

  • being Agnostic, I don’t “sin” per se… but the worst thing I’ve done is my secret and mine alone

  • I was really mean to this peer-blogger-acquaintance-nonfriend of mine.

I even wrote a horrible blog about him.  I wrote about all the awful reasons I didn’t like him.

    And I felt terrible afterward.

    [bites lip]

    It was just awful.

  • Well, I’ve committed most of the deadlies, so I suppose those are the worst.

  • I once attempted to use logic to sway a member of the clergy into abandoning blind faith in favor of agnosticism.  I failed, thank shiva. (I should repent for that…. or something.)

  • **note to self…don’t leave a prayer in the western wall**…

  • @LifeNeedsProtection - I like that and I agree. I know I’ve lied before and disrespected my parents, not to mention I have said mean things about people (some more deserving than others), but honestly couldn’t tell you which is worse…they all make me feel guilty. I’ve asked for forgiveness and confessed them to God and that’s where they stay. ::shrug::

  • Only something God and I will know. :p A sin, for me, is a secret… and one that I will never tell anyone else.

  • I am not telling  :)

  • i find it appalling that they published this.

  • who’s to say?

I can think of things that I’ve done that I would consider sin. but they are not what the Bible would call sin. coincidentally, I have done many things that the Bible does call sin. but some of those actions…i’m downright proud of.

this is a roundabout way of saying “I don’t know”.

    <3

  • I promised I wouldn’t tell.

  • I confessed my worst sin on Xanga and caused a hokey paradox.

  • I can’t think of anything really bad that I’ve already done. Maybe ‘cos I’m still too young.

  • Polluting my body with droogs and I guess if homosexuality is a sin, there’s been a lil’ bit of that going on.

  • …I think,putting things before God…

  • @LiteNLovely - Agreed.

All sin is the same in God’s eyes. If I murder someone, it’s just as bad as cheating on my math test to God. Society is the one that tells us which ones are ‘worse’ than others.

  • I guess that’s subjective. In terms of what the church says is wrong it’d probably be the fact that I’m a lesbain. Well not so much that I am one, but that I feel no remorse about it and embrace it as my lifestyle.

Oh, and there was this one time that I killed a man in Reno just to watch him die…

  • @sammjane - This is something that confuses me. And I’m not trying to be a jerk here, I’m honestly curious. How can all sins be the same in God’s eyes and it’s man that says one is worse than the others, while at the same time we’re created in God’s image and even in the Bible there’s a hierarchy of punishment for sins? How can there be a “just and loving God” if he sees no difference between cheating on a test and rape and torture?

  • Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride.

I’ve broken all of these seven deadly sins.

  • @elvesdoitbetter - Because either way you’re disobeying God’s will.

  • @sammjane - Hm… sorry, but that just doesn’t cut it for me. Again, not trying to be a jerk. It just seems like it’s saying “Both sins are seen as equal because they’re both sins.”

  • I’m so sad for all the men in Reno being slaughtered in senseless murders! =XD

  • who gets to decide what qualifies as a sin?

  • Whatever it is, it’s between me and God. Hard as we try, everyone sins. I think God cares more about what you do between them

  • @huginn - You are right on the money on this one….but knowing the political viewpoint(s) from a public “on the fence” about Obama I think perhaps this is a political ploy.  I think Obama just might have thought this was an excellent idea…making his apparent prayer known to the American voting public.  I would like to think I am wrong but when you get down to the nuts and bolts of it…he is, after all, a “politician.”

  • This is an unconscionable question to ask of anyone.  In the Book of James it clearly states if you sin…any sin…it’s all the same to God.  Sin is sin and it removes you from your relationship with God.  Mankind has defined them on a scale of lesser or major, not God!  James said it best..commit one sin and you have commited them all.  Why would you ask such a remarkably personal question.  Who cares?  And why would anyone shamelessly tell you?

  • I will stick with LUST please

.. then maybe Laziness, Doubt, lack of boldness

  • I like how many people avoid the question, despite the fact that most of us dont even know eachother… thats how deep we are in feeling like we must hide our sins/protect ourselves from others (who also sin! lol)

    Romans 3: “Freakin’” 23 – “For all have Sinned…”

  • I’ll say my worst sin is denying the Christian belief in front of my grandmother and calling god a joke in her face. I’m daoist so I kinda feel bad about the whole thing now.

  • @TillTheLastPetalFalls -

    in total agreeance. Who hasn’t?

  • I don’t recall. It’s been a long time. Possibly someone else can think of a sin I have done recently, a bad one? Don’t look at me.    …Love, Sande

  • @elvesdoitbetter - That’s exactly what I’m saying. You don’t have to believe it, but I believe it to be truth. Just because they’re equal doesn’t make sinning ok, but there are all equal in God’s eyes.

  • I emotionally cheated myself and my ex by falling for someone else and not being honest about it. I lied and pretended it wasn’t happening. In the end, the truth always comes out.

    Oh and anal sex.

    -L

  • okay it would probably have to be breaking all the windows out of my cheating exs car last week. It was fun.

  • blaming everyone else

  • There are many sins that I am sure people would be more than willing to point out about me, and yes, some of them are “doozies”, but the worst sin is that of PRIDE.  Pride allows you to think that you don’t need God, or to depend on Him like you should.  Pride leads you to many areas of life, that you would not normally go.  Pride will not let you confess when you know you should.  Pride will destroy your life, if you don’t turn around and acknowledge the Lord of your life.  Pride will make you hang on when you know shouldn’t.  Pride will worm its way into your mind and heart without you realizing it.  Pride stops us from being real with God and with other people.

  • I broke my promise to him.

  • @Zooish - hahaha!

  • I use His name in vain.

  • I know what I consider to be the worst sin I’ve committed, but at the same time, who am I to play God?

  • I mean, probably denying the existence or relevance of god…

  • @trebleclef402 - don’t be a chicken. i’m sure he remembers it as vividly as you do.. and a heartfelt apology would takea  weight off your shoulders

  • Is there a “worst” sin?  I mean, I can think of several that would be equally dastardly.

But I have to say that in my life, hooking up with another guy when my husband wasn’t comfortable with it was pretty bad.  My hubby doesn’t like it when I hide things from him, which is understandable because I hate it too.  After all, being each other’s first choice is what marriage is about.

  • Filch a Kumqat, in a supermarket. But I think I atoned for that sin because it was hell, I thought it would be SWEET!  :)

  • Yes – confess them to one another.   No – don’t spread your sin-stories all over the Internet!

  • adultery, which the church calls a sin, but I just felt bad about.

  • all sins are equal

stealing 10 cents is just as bad in God’s eyes as still $10 million

  • For not believing in God.  It’s the worst sin according to some Christian and they told me no matter what good I do in my life I will go to hell.  So, helping to find the cure to Cancer would not bring me to heaven because I’m not Christian.  Yeah, that sound so fair. =/

  • I don’t know if you read comments if the post is old, but I really think you should take the prayer down. it was meant to be personal. I think you can provide the link and people can click if they desire, but I don’t think it should be posted so blatantly. I dunno, it bothers me that people took it from the wall.

  • Are… are you serious?

Hmmm… this is a tough question.  I was going to answer it but I don’t know how to define “worst”.  Sin is sin.  From an eternal perspective, all sin is commited equal… no sin is worse than another.  As far as worldly consequences, I suppose one could gauge a “worst” sin on basis of which might yeild the worst possible consequences… huh… I don’t know.  Probably lying as I take greater offence to someone lying to me than probably anything else.

  • I think the worst things I’ve done were all within the realm of useless and selfish hate.

  • i seriously have no idea.
