  • Reading or Skimming Xanga Blogs

I read this on Laurenmaureen’s blog:

“I’m going to be quite honest: I don’t read most blogs. I skim them.
If they’re short, I read them. If they’re long, I generally don’t have
to attention span or the patience to read it. Sorry!

All I do is skim them until I get the point, and if I feel like it, I comment. That’s just how I roll haha =]

Do you read or skim like me?”

Do you tend to read or skim xanga blogs?

  • I read it.

  • I like to get close to the person that I read. And if I need to comment then it will make sense and be more honestly in depth to what the person would want to know on feedback..
And it may be that I am just nosy..

  • I usually read it, but if it’s longer then it depends on who wrote it. If it’s not grabbing me from the get-go then it’s hard to make myself read it all the way through.

  • Sorry, I don’t know what you were asking in this entry: I didn’t get further than “I’m going to be honest” before I got bored.

  • I tend to skim longer entries and try to get to the point. I lack patience when it comes to that. Every once in a while, I’ll read the longer entries. The shorter entries I more than likely will read.

  • @ChrisRusso - Haha That was priceless

  • I read 99% of them,  but the really long ones that aren’t going anywhere and aren’t written well,  I don’t read.

    I read yours,  though.

  • It depends really. Like when the person is very important to me, I read the entry no matter how fucktardedly long the post is. But when uhm, the person is not that important, and when the entry becomes too boring, I just skim stuff.. Go from paragraph to paragraph. And comment.. Or leave 2 eprops if I don’t have anything to say.

  • dude. you know you read mine all the time cuz they rock. like yours. see, you and me dan have a mutual blogging admiration, affiliation, respect, from one blogging ninja master to another blogging ninja master.

  • Honestly? I do both. It depends on the blog entry, not the person. But if it’s a good friend, I’ll read every word.

  • @EilisAngelos - That was what I SHOULD have said.  I’m the same way.  You have to say something involving from the get-go.

  • I read them. It’s rare that I only skim the blog. I do have a focusing problem and at times I can’t sit still through the whole thing. In that case, I just come back to it later.

  • I skim them, unless I really REALLY want to have sex with the person writing.

Then I might read a paragraph or two.

  • I only browse when I feel like reading so that makes a difference as well..

  • I do both. Depends on the entry, basically. :)

  • im like you skim long ones…read the short ones

  • I try to read, sometimes the really longer ones, are skimmed.

  • i either read or don’t read at all.  =]

  • i SKIMMED through

  • i read it. which is why everyone is telling me my eyes will go bad soon. apparantly you’re supposed to look away from the computer screen every fifteen minutes for ten seconds so your eyes don’t implode or something?

  • read. but its becoming tougher to hit all of the ones i subscribe to since im over 250 subs now

  • If the people are interesting then I read them. And since I don’t usually subscribe to people who I don’t find interesting, I read more often than I skim.

  • If it’s interesting enough for me, I read.

When it’s as long as your patootie, NO.

  • I do a little of both..

  • I always read the entry if it belongs to one of my closer friends or to someone who comments back and forth with me.  If it entry is from one of my other subscriptions, then I probably just skim it unless the subject is really interesting.

  • I skim them, If I have time to read, I will read but I skim, some blogs are just really long and I know mine can be too. But if I notice in the comments ppl responding on a topic I missed, I’ll go back and read the who thing.

  • It depends on how long the entry is, what it’s about, who wrote it, and how easy it is to read. If it’s a bunch of really long paragraphs and/or run on sentences, I barely skim. If the font is hard to read, I skip it. If the font is on a busy background, I skip it. If it’s someone I really care about, I’ll read the whole thing.

  • I always read. If I find that the blog is not my cup of tea I move on. I’d have to say Dan’s the only blog I read that isn’t a “personalized” blog. I like blogs that are about the person and their day to day events. I don’t like bloggers that simply blog to gain readers. As I said Dan is the only blog that I’ve ever read consistently like that.

  • I usually read them.

  • I usually read them, but it depends on who the person is and what the topic is.  If it’s politics, I don’t even skim…

  • Both. It depends.

  • I’ll read it if it’s interesting enough. If it’s a boring account of their day, I’ll probably be inclined to skip it.

  • i read them if theyre good enough. but i skim them if the first few paragraphs are blah.

  • I read… if it is really long and i don’t have the patience I will Say… sorry couldn’t read it or didn’t hav ethe time… something…  If I do read it though I tend to POINT OUT in the comment something from the blog that makes it clear that I have read it… lol Yes, I am a brat that way.

  • I read it; if the topic doesn’t interest me, I don’t read at all.

  • I read, of course. Unless it’s freakishly long; then I skim.

  • I do exactly what she does. Too long of a blog or your typing is ish then I won’t read or I will skim. Short and to the point then I’ll read.

  • i feel like i miss out after i skim the long ones, so i usually go back to read them since i’ll have the page opened anyway

  • Depends how long and if it perks my interest. Also, how close I am to the person.

  • Sure, I skim longer entries.

But I NEVER comment unless I’ve read the entire entry, and all of the previous comments as well. I want to be informed before I speak, and not miss a point. I also don’t want to repeat 80 commenters before me.

  • Gee Dan your on to me dangit I only skim yours   hehehe

  • same with ilovehil.

  • I read short ones.  I skim long ones unless they’re written by someone I know that I want to read all of their insights or it’s on a topic I’m particularly interested in.

  • I read until it bores me, then I skim. If I don’t get bored, then the Xanga is read.

  • Do you tend to read or skim xanga blogs?

For Dan’s enteries that I do comment on, I read the linked article; and I read each and every comment made before I comment myself.

  • I read most of them.  I just think that if someone is going to post something, then they usually have a reason.  (whether it’s boredom, whether they were inspired, whether it’s about an important issue, whether it’s to make people think, etc.) It may not always make sense to us fellow Xangans, but I think to a certain extent that if we decide to read an entry that we should read it in its entirety.

  • I read, but if it looks lame after the first 3 posts, I dont leave a comment.

  • If they’re too long, I usually skim unless they’re really, really interesting to read the whole way through. I do the same with long comments.

  • Depends on who wrote it and what it’s about.
If it’s by a good writer, I’ll generally read it regardless of the subject/length.
If it’s by an average writer, I’ll read if it’s on an interesting subject or short.
    Otherwise I skim

  • it depends. i’ll read it, but if i find that i’m not entertained or it doesn’t interest me, i’ll start skimming. i’m always surprised as hell when people comment and find out they actually read my blog. they’re flippin’ long!! not on purpose though.

  • Like a good essay, long xanga entries need to pull me in within the first couple paragraphs, if they don’t, its skim city baby.

  • Being someone who writes frighteningly long entries, I understand when people skim entries. However, I do try to read each entry thoroughly, seeing as I know that the person put in the time to put his/her thoughts online. I expect the same from people, but that’s not necessarily applicable. I’m guilty of skimming.

  • Skimskimskim if they’re long and/or clumped into huge paragraphs.

  • I guess it all depends.
If the first four sentences are interesting enough. i continue.

if not.. i skip. not skim

  • I’m a reader. But I can get the vibe within the first few moments and if it’s lame I bail out.

  • I read a few of them. I do the same thing she does: if your blog is excessively long, I don’t have the attention span to read it all, so I skim. But I’m talking like, 2 pages long.

  • I’m thankful for short posts. I read my closer Xanga buddies blogs fully, but I skim the others.

  • it depends. sometimes i’ll skim, but mostly i will read.

  • @ChrisRusso - LMAO!!!! Good one!

  • i do the same thing, if its long i skim it, if its short i read the whole thing. unless its interesting and long i’ll read it.

  • I read them if they get me from the start. I skim sometimes, but I never comment on something unless i have actually read it.  Commenting on the gist of something just doesn’t seem right to me.

  • I do the same thing. When the blogs tend to get long, I generally skim them. If their short, then I read all of them.

  • Im a semi skimmer, semi reader.  I have to admit it.

Sometimes, I dont have time to read blogs.  I have a life outside of xanga.

  • I do read all blogs entries or at least skim them though the read my subscriptions.

I would like to leave comments, but I dont want to over do it.

  • if it’s short or like, divided into paragraphs I read. if its just one loooong block of text I just skim or leave it all together.

  • depends on what mood i’m in and who writes them and the topic

  • I skim to decide if I want to read.

  • i read what is written, in its entirety, because that person wrote it in its entirety.  if they felt it was important enough to write about, then surely it’s worth me giving a few extra moments to understand why.

(however, i only subscribe to people that post things of value on a consistent basis — so perhaps i’m “skimming” in advance?)

  • I usually read the whole thing, but it depends on who wrote it.

  • It sorta depends on the person and what it’s about

  • It depends on the entry. I read a lot of them. If they don’t seem like something I’m too interested in I’ll skim.
    -L

  • Why are you even on a blogging site if you don’t like to read blogs?

I read them and it always annoys me when people on skim my entries then try to comment because their comment doesn’t make sense or say anything of substance. It seems like that’s missing the whole point of this website.

  • Some bloggers don’t write very well. If it’s a post full of clumsy prose and rambling points, I pretty much have to skim. (Though I admit that if the grammar is bad enough, it can be fascinating reading material- seriously- because it is obviously written by a person who doesn’t normally put their thoughts in print. They can be unusual and interesting thoughts.)

  • If it is someone I know personally I will read the whole blog

If I am in the mood I will read the whole blog

If it is interesting I will read the whole blog

otherwise I will skim but as you can tell I read all of the writing about 80% of the time. I feel that it is courtesy since I would want the same done to mine.

  • I never understood the art of skimming.  Thus I either read, read random pieces or don’t read.

  • I do both-it depends on much time I have. If it’s a good friend or someone who always leaves a comment, then I’ll read theirs no matter what.

  • Skimming most xanga blogs is akin to trying to slide on an ice patch one inch across.  Reading requires some depth in the writing.  So having said that, in most cases I just look at the blog.

  • No I thin-slice too.

  • if its short, i’ll read it

if its long and interesting, i’ll read it

if its long and not THAT interesting, i’ll skim it

if its just long and pointless, i close the box

  • I always read them.  Just don’t always have time to comment because I’ve got so many things I’d like to say…and a rambunctious toddler who doesn’t like to give me the time to say them

  • I read unless it’s an insipid rambling on something inconsequential.  Of course, those can be funny, but I’m talking about the dry ones that really have no redeeming value.

  • It depends on what they’re blogging about.  If they’re blogging about what their day was or something terribly mundane.  I’ll skip it entirely.  However, if the topic is interesting, I’ll read it.

  • usually skim unless the entry’s so interesting that i have to read every word.

  • i read, but i have a very small number of subs

  • A bit of both. It depends on how interesting the content is. I am more likely to read it if the paragraphs are shorter. Otherwise it looks intimidating.

  • I only subscribe to people that I find interesting in some way. I read their blogs entirely. When I’m “surfing” Xanga, I tend to skim, especially when going through past posts. But even then, I tend to give the person the first paragraph to peak my interest. If they don’t, then I won’t read.

  • I prefer to read blogs, but if I really don’t have time I’ll skim them.

  • It varies with me according to the blogger, the text layout, supporting graphics and opening sentences.

  • Depends – but most of the time I read it.

  • like you if its long I dont read it all, but if its long and good I will read it.  just depends on how tired I am.

  • I skim through most of the ones that I don’t know

  • Yours I skim Ha ha. Just kidding.

  • tend to read, down to the last drop!

  • I figure if someone takes the time to type it then I should take the time to read it. I am a bit longwinded from time to time to be honest sometimes I start blogging with the intention of a quick update and before I realize it the words are flowing so fast that i can not just turn them off. I blog from my heart though also so this could be why.

However if it is a blog like this one Dan and it is really long I will skim it since I know you are not blogging for personal reasons. If i am in a hurrry I will skim it but 9 out of 10 times I always return to read the full story. Or click the links like you provide.

  • i do both; read if the topic matter interests me, skim if its not. if i’m really interested, hell, i’ll even read ALL the comments. seriously.

  • RYC: You do. I’m projecting into the future a few months =]

  • I will usually skim a blog, but if something that I skim across catches my attention then I will read it through. If I find someone has a lot of posts that draw me in, then I will often read even the less interesting posts because I start to feel a connection to that person.

  • I tend to read an entire entry if I’m going to leave a comment so it’s something useful in reply, but sometimes I’ll just skim if I’m a bit short on time or not that interested.

  • I start reading, then end up skimming in frustration due to time constraints…

  • Thanks for dropping by Dan always good to get a comment from ya…..and I do read all the blog thats probably why I am one of the slowest to get around to everyone

  • I try to read them, but sometimes I will skim. If they are close friends, then I like to read them. Also if I want to comment on someone’s post, I generally try to read as much of the post as I can, if not the whole thing.

  • If it’s someone I know personally, I always read it through, but if it’s someone I haven’t met, I tend to skim.

  • Depends on the writer

  • There was an article maybe a year or two back stating something about how there’s actually a style in which you’re supposed to blog in.  The article said to not blog more than two or three paragraphs; if it’s longer than that, people generally won’t want to read it.

I do both.  Like stated earlier, it all depend on the person and if I found the material interesting.
But the ones I tend to never skim are the ones about people’s sex lives.  Now those, regardless of the person, are hella interesting, haha!

  • usually i’ll actually read it unless it’s painstakingly boring, then i just go on to the next one…

  • I usually read them but if I’m feeling lazy or don’t have alot of time I’ll just skim

  • I skim
If it’s not interesting then I go to the next, but if I skim and I like it then I go back and actually read it.

  • depends. Don’t think anyone reads or skims mine anyway! LOL

  • If I’m visiting your actual page and not just looking my subsript up, I’m reading all of your post.

I only skim in the subs list, otherwise I always read because I feel it is polite and since I come from the school of, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, it is just my nature to follow that rule.

  • It depends. I always read short one’s, but long one’s…well….if the first paragraph doesn’t catch me then I skim the rest.

  • I read it my subscriptions because from experience from myself, I know that every word that a person writes is important to them. And until recently, I haven’t really delved into the world of xanga outside my own… and I’m finding that reading other people’s blogs can be really interesting at times. Sometimes they make me think, and whatnot. So yeah, I just happened to come across your blog and decided to leave you a comment. :P

  • Huh?  I’m sorry, what did you just say?

  • If they are my family’s or friends’ blogs, I read them despite the length.  If they are someone I know on Xanga, I typically skim if they are long…unless they catch my interest right away.

  • I read so long as I am kept engaged. I skim if it gets boring, or goes into a religious diatribe, or if I realize too late that the title made me assume it was about something it is not.

  • I skim a lot and then I read. If someone is important to me I read it all the time. And often I read all of strangers posts. Sometimes I read it all just so I can leave a meaningful comment.  But I read  A LOT of blogs and if I didn’t skim a lot of them a lot of the time I would just be reading blogs all day and never get anything done.

But I feel really bad about skimming because so far as I’ve seen nobody, writes blogs or comments longer than mine so if I skim, how can I expect anybody else to read?

I guess I wish I read everything but to be honest I don’t. I was so guilt ridden about this once that I even wrote a giant blog entry confessing the fact that I only skim. I don’t think anybody read it though.

  • my dumb self sits there and reads them all no matter how long or short

  • Both I have to say.. depends on the entry.. but i try my best to read all because i would want someone to read mine.

  • If it’s really short I read it.

If it’s really long I skim it, I only read it if it strikes up a real interest.

  • I read them and sorry if they are just way to long i don’t even bother. I’d rather not even waste my time if i’m not going to actually read it throughly and get something out of it. In my experience more people read short blogs and comments anyway. If i have something long winded to say i break it up into smaller and more manageable pieces.

  • most people do ….oh yes…excuse me, do what now?

  • If I find it interesting I read the whole thing.  If it’s longer than one page and I’m very tired I probably skim through it.

  • I skim them if it’s long and if the first paragraph does not hold my attention or interest. But if I know how good of a writer the person is then no matter how long or short, I read them.

  • i only read it if it looks interesting after i skim it.

  • Depends on the content.  Ancient_Scribe’s posts tend to be long these days, but they are definitely worth reading, not just skimming.

  • i comment only on the blogposts i’ve read… i don’t like to be called out as ignorant and don’t want the chance that i misinterpreted something…. i also feel that skimming is distateful and disrespectful… don’t comment on something you haven’t read… or at least be honest and inform the author that you haven’t prior to writing your actual comment.

  • I mostly read. To my favorite people here I will always read no matter what. If it’s boring or too long and doesn’t get to the point I skim.

  • I read them. T_T

  • I skim your blog a lot. Others, I read.
