Earning Your Pay
My boss is in town this week so I am working hard getting things done. I noticed my boss is sort of a workaholic. He works at a pace that is hard to imagine when you consider how much he travels. I get tired just watching him work. (I guess I should just help out).
Last night while we were working, I couldn’t help but to think there are people who work according to what they are paid. And others that just give their job everything they can.
Do you think you give your job everything or do you think you give your job what they pay you?

I give my job everything (when I have one). Why not – it doesn’t cost much else for me and prevents me from being bored.
Depends on how much i like the job.
I do typically give it everything, and even though I’m drastically underpaid for my current position, am doing so now.
That said, the older I get, the less I feel like giving it my all in relation to poor pay. I guess I’ll just have to see where this path leads me….
I usually give it my everything – at least in terms of the students. The meetings? Bah. Forget those. haha
If I spent less time on Xanga at work, I’m sure I could do more.
I give it all I’ve got. I don’t feel right if I don’t put some effort into it.
It’s funny how many people put a lot of effort into something just to make it look effortless.
When I had a job, I always gave it 110%. I guess that’s why I don’t have a job job anymore–I’m too busy giving my kids 110%.
I used to have a job where I felt they didn’t pay me enough. Now I’m happy for the wages I earn for the work I do.
I’ve only had summer jobs so far and I give ‘em what they pay me. Though I think we should get paid more for uber-jerk interaction.
I think it depends on the job and ones ability. I was in a job where I worked very hard once stocking groceries and my boss was still on me all the time to hurry up. I was not going to kill or even hurt myself for a grocery night-stocking job… I felt if they wanted things done faster they should hire more people (or shut up). I knew they were cheap already since only one or two of the people were full-time, the rest were part-time workers. Some nights there were only like 5 or 6 of us to re-stock and “front” the whole freaking place…
To quote Office Space, “It’s a problem of motivation.”
I guage my work according to the buget I’m given. If they want the work done in 200 hours, I’ll get it done in 190 hours.
I have spent my career putting the job first over everything.
I think in retro it was a mistake…balance is important…I think there is a current “generation”of people in charge ..so to speak..that are tyrants..and spoilt…. and are of the mind to just use people as disposable items…and then get some one new….I hope things will change …SOON!!
i give it my all usually. but in the past, when i’ve had jobs i hated and i wasn’t getting paid for the work i was doing, i eventually got burned out and my pace would slow down. now i’m in a job that sometimes i think i’m being overpaid for the work i’m doing! lol…
i gave my all in my previous job. currently, i know i could do better. maybe its time to move on.
My husband always does job first.
Sometimes, the higher you are the more pay you get but the less work you do (work level might be harder though)
I have always given to the fullness of my capability….and it was not only noticed… but I became very successful.
I usually give it my all.
If I enjoy my work, I give it all I can b/c I would do it regardless.
It depends on my mood. If it’s a shitty day, I only give ‘em what they pay me. Otherwise, everything I’ve got.
I’m reading this at work right now, so make your own assumptions.
Actually, there’s a lot of up and down at my job, but when crunch time comes, get out of the way!
I get paid well and they get their moneys worth.
Hmmm, I agree with PrincessFiveandDime, I wouldn’t be on Xanga if they gave me something to actually do.
I usually give it everything because I have a good work ethic. There are days that I don’t give it all, but that’s just normal.
i always start out with everything. if that is rewarded with raises, promotions and respect, i give more/continue to give everything. if i continue to get hassled over irrelevant things disrespected and told im not qualified for that management possition they are giving to a kid they just hired that’s still in highschool… well, lets just say i have not been to work for a few days, and after seeing my bonus check(which according to the pay structure should have had well over a $500 bonus but was less than 2) i wont be going in today either. i will be calling in sick and looking for another job.
what are they losing? well, im a skip tracer, meaning that i find phone numbers for people who have moved or changed their numbers so my company can call them. i make 4-5 times the locates expected of me. also more than anyone else i work with or any 2 of them combined.
i give it my all no matter what it is i am doing, how else can you feel good about yourself?
I only get paid minimum wage. But I work in a music store and I love it and I love my boss so I pretty much give it my all.
I don’t have a job, but my Step-Father does, and he gives it everything. Everything he has. So when he gets home he doesn’t have enough for my mother or my two brothers. So I guess give it your all, but save some for your home life.
i work hard at my job
The problem is, the more you do the higher the expectations become. A company will bleed everything they can out of you – because everyone is replaceable. No matter what you do, there is always someone next in line who will potentially put more into it. I believe that to do your best you should do over and above what is expected, but not to the extreme, because then their expecttions become completely unrealistic. And I agree with the Office Space comment – ‘it’s a problem of motivation.’ Haha, I love that movie. http://www.bullshitjob.com/officespace/ Check out this website.
Im a hard worker…but i do get paid pretty darn well. hahaa.
It depends on my mood. Usually in the morning I give it all I can, and then by the afternoon I’m like “gah, I don’t get paid enough for this.” But in the morning I’m like a star employee.
I always try to do my best. I feel like I’m wasting my time if I don’t.
i actually have two answers for this question.
1) in jobs where i am hoping to advance and make a career of it i work my hardest and attempt to show exactly how skilled i am.
2) in jobs such as retail, food service or when dealing with the general public i work as hard as i earn. there is no point in giving my all to earn little pay and little appreciation from those i do serve.
sometimes I give 110%, sometimes I don’t. and on the days I don’t I
tend to excuse myself (flimsy though it is) with “they don’t pay me
enough…”
I give it my all.
I give it all. In my career, it’s a must.
what they pay……..my family get my everything
i used to give my job everything…now, I don’t function well so have trouble with giving them anything.
I earn every dollar they pay me, but I am worth so much more.
They pay me the same if I take 120 calls or 3, so it comes down to doing the best job possible. No, I can’t say I give them everything, but then again, it is just a job…its what I do to put food on the table; not my life.
I took over a 60% cut in pay at my current employer. Then when I brought up some serious problems to the Director it all got flipped back on me.
They get what they pay me and not a dime more now.
I take pride in the work that I do, no matter what it is. You’ll never get anywhere if you don’t.
I’m a nurse
You better hope i give it my all!
I’ve had two jobs, both of which I give it my all. My last job didn’t recognize it, so I quit. My new job does
Sometimes I motivate myself to work as hard as I can, but when I get nothing in return (not even a pat on the back, or a “Good job!”… I start slacking off again.
I work hard no matter what. I just quit if I am not getting paid enough for the work I am doing.
haha I give it what they pay me.
I don’t get paid for my job. I’m a stay at home mother. Here’s where I say some sappy shit about money doesn’t compare to the wonderful rewards of motherhood, or some shit like that. Yeah, ok… I believed that up until my oldest became a teenager. Now he’s sitting in a boot camp as punishment for his crimes at the age of 17. Yeah, I wish someone would pay me for all the shit I have to endure as a mother!
I give my job beyond everything (even taking all the crap they give me for the tiny things that no one else does either so I didn’t know it was required because no one freaking told me….sorry) and they really do pay be the bare minimum. ($7.02, what the heck kind of wage is that? And at 10-15 hours a week, I’m glad I don’t have to pay rent right now…)
I definitely give everything. I try to go above and beyond. You know, for my networking and references and all that jazz. Plus, I like when people like me, so I work really hard to impress them.
i prefer to work as hard as i can.
but if i know that everything i did will be redone or thrown out, then i do the bare minimum.
I only get paid $7.25 at GameStop, but I do everything I can and stay longer than I have to because I love my job… most of the time…
I do wish they paid me enough for me to be a permanent employee.
Well, I work harder than I get paid for, but I wouldn’t exactly say I put all of myself in my job.
I was a manager where I work for a while, but I stepped down for reasons related to school. Now, I’m back at the bottom of the totem pole, but I still do a large number of the things I used to do when I was a manager, even though I don’t have to nor do other people at my level know how to do them.
Mainly, since I already know the job from having to tell others exactly how to do it, its easy for me to work as efficiently as possible while keeping my own exertion below a certain threshold. Feels like a happy medium to me.
It depends on who I’m working for. I’ve had bosses where they treated me so awesome (ethically OR monetarily) that I always gave them my all. My part-time job is like that. However, my current full-time job, I only give them what they pay me because they’re assholes. Like, for real.
um. it doesn’t matter how little the work. for some reason… i jus always half ass it.
im a web cam host and i haven’t showed up to work in 3 days! thats the easiest job in the world. but i just most days dont feel like working . ever.
i get paid 2.50 an hour.
I don’t give it my ‘all’ but i don’t give a 2.50 hour work. that’s… poor quality. It also depends on how little sleep i got the night before- as to how much I give. and what day of the week, how busy , etc…
My productivity depends on the substance of the requests for support I get. On my own, I undertake bigger and more complex tasks until I run into a wall.
When my work is defined by the wants of others I waste my time doing bullshit busywork that makes me want to stab my eyes out and walk in front of a speeding train while a pickup takes off with a rope around my neck attached to it’s trailer hitch.
I work for what I get, maybe a bit more. I like my boss, but I’m also not exactly someone who has the mindset of giving it my all.
ryc: Haha, good one. I haven’t had a canned drink before that in forever.
Everything I can.
When I was working, I always gave my job more than 100%. Yeah, it was a crappy job at a theater where I didn’t get paid much, but it made me feel really good to know that I was really putting myself into it. I guess it showed because my boss loved me and even the customers gave me compliments.
Being a slacker is just stupid in my mind.
Lol, for what I do, I was told I should be earning $15- 49 per job, but I do it for free. I like what I do. Money never means that much to me.
good question!
id say i usually give it my best.
i say give it all
When I started at my current job I often went the extra mile, per se. Even up to this day, but then I realized that the more flexible I am, the more workload I receive and it’s somehow not jiving with what I was getting paid for. I am taking on more stress than I should and for what? Sometimes there were perks and hey, that’s just great, but majority of the time it was either a TY or not even kinda job, ya know?
So now I just work accordingly to what they’re paying me. No more. No less. Well, except on the odd times that I feel like I wanna be “Miss Nice”! -LoL-
I believe in putting in an honest days work for an honest days pay. Most people I work with try to do as little as possible and usually get away with it. I’d feel guilty if I did that and would have to work harder the next few days.
What job?
i think i give my job what they pay me.
everything and I’m retired kind of.
I just like to keep myself occupied…I guess you could call that giving your job everything…but i’m not obsessed with it or anything…i mean, picking up after children in a toystore is simply demanding whether it meets my pay or not…
i give them their money’s worth ! i will not make management decisions for what i’m paid, although that’s what they would like.
I do what needs doing – I don’t slack but I also don’t go looking for extra work.
I give as much as I can without totally burning myself out but still proving myself as an asset. I just started there, first off, so I’m still in the “trial phase” and also I hope to be trained as a back technician someday so I know I need to work hard and prove myself as a fast learner to accomplish this goal…I know it may not be anytime soon, but the possibility for the future is there.
I think your work ethics have to do with type of person you are. Some people have it in them to not leave the work day without finishing all they need to finish — we call these people hard workers and perfectionists. Others simply do what it takes to get by so that they can receive their paycheck & make ends meet — we call these people unmotivated and underachievers. This is generally speaking — of course there are days when we all goof off and come on Xanga instead of working.
i think i do too much for what i’m paid for.
I give my job more than what they pay me, but I don’t give it my all.
No matter what my job, I work my ass off every day I go to it.
I can’t help it. Even when I try to slack, I start to feel crazy.
Thank you for asking. I have always been underpaid. My godless, atheistic worker hating employers have always underpaid me.
I give way more than I get back, in terms of pay. Teaching is a calling and we don’t just leave it behind at the end of the day – those kids are always on our hearts and minds and we are always thinking of ways we can help, do things better, improve things….the hours are much longer than it appears to others.
I work harder at the things I enjoy. I’d do the things I love for free.
i definately give it everything…i deserve a raise!
