  • $200 Shoes

Comment on the post below this in order to help me break my comment record.

    Here we go:

I was reading the site of lotta_valdez and she mentioned her brother wanted to buy a pair of the new Jordan shoes that cost $200.

She asked, “Is $200 a reasonable amount to spend on shoes?”

Is $200 too much for a pair of shoes?

Comments (178)

  • Let’s get ‘em!

    …DAMN YOU KELLY

  • already people can’t follow directions, maybe you should disable comments on this one?

  • @Drakonskyr - You forgot to scream “ZOMG FIRST!!!!!  LAWL!!!!”

  • not if you’re a professional athelete-of course then you get them for free.

  • Of course it is WAY too much.

200 dollars would fill up my gas tank three times!!!

  • Um, yes! Although I don’t buy shoes that cost more than 50 dollars, ever.

  • YES! I refuse to even shell out $80 for some Ed Hardys, no matter how hot and/or sexy I think they are.

  • For me, yes. For someone else, it depends. If it is within their budget and the shoes are important enough to them, then no, it is not unreasonable. I think it would be unfair to make a blanket statement for everyone that $200 is too much for a pair of shoes.

  • By the way, I usually buy my shoes from Wal-Mart for less than $20…. >.<

  • It depends. If you can afford them, then it’s not too much. Those shoes probably cost $5 to make though. And maybe another $5 for shipping and handling.

  • It is a reasonable amount to spend on quality leather shoes, not on sneakers…….for basketball, running, and playing in the yard…..

Dan, you are embarrassing me with all those comments.

    ..:: dr. dante

  • I don’t think so now, but when I was in high school? I probably would’ve wanted those shoes and thought it was reasonable.

  • yes it is. your are paying for the name, not the shoe. they might’ve cost about a dollar to make in china.

  • not just NO…but _______  ______ !!!!!!!!!!

  • $200 is too much for a pair of SNEAKERS, yes.

  • Its all a matter of perspective. I think the more money one has, the more money seems reasonable to spend on something frivolous.  A friend of mine has a $1200 purse. To me, that is a RIDICULOUS amount of money to spend on a purse, but then again, she makes a lot more money than I do.  But there’s probably people that would tell me that the amount of money that I would realistically spend on a purse is ridiculous too, if I make more than they do.
I think that spending money on athletic shoes if you ACTUALLY use them to participate in a sport can definitely be worth it.  When I ran back in school, I was able to ward off injuries by wearing better quality (read more expensive) shoes.

  • Well $200 is ZAR1400.  That is four hundred rand more than the average South African lives on in a month.  Do you think its okay?

  • It depends on your interests.  If you’re really into shoes, $200 is not that much.

  • i’d be too afraid to wear $200 shoes.

  • Yes, at least for that type of shoes. I would maybe spend $200 on a really well made pair of boots that I planned on having for a long time, with the assumption that they would last and look good for ages. I would also consider spending that much on cycling shoes at some point, because those are already crazy expensive but have a specialized purpose. But first I would try really hard to find them for less than that.

  • $200 is not too much to pay for shoes….as long as they’re made out of pure silver and were worn by Jesus and you could sell them on e-bay for 5 million bucks.  Jeez people.  Those shoes cost $5 to make.

  • Hmm…I don’t think so. After all, they are just shoes. They’ll get dirty, and messy, aand worn. Then you’ll probably think “Hmmm…I should have saved that $200.”

  • sorry lotta_valdez but $200 is a lot for me to spend on shoes!!  but that’s just my opinion… if you got the $$ and they are going to last you F O R E V E R then it’s not mine or anyone else’s business… I guess I’d buy $200 shoes if I could afford it.

  • I would feel incredibly guilty spending $200 on a pair of shoes with the amount of people in the world who can’t afford food. That’s just me personally, though.

  • i cringe if i spend more than $50 on shoes.. $200 is just a little too much, I think.

  • Of course $200 could be a lotta money for any pair of shoes, but Jordan’s…worth it!

  • I usually get my best shoes (waaaaay cooler than those) for $30 in the city. With gas it’s way cheaper than $200. What BS. They’re all made in China anyways so for the most part they are worth about $5 when they come out fresh.

  • If I had $200 to spend on any one item, it would be a nice jacket or handbag or something. Then again I’m a girl, so I’m not into expensive sneakers. That probably didn’t help. Anyway, for me $200 for a pair of sneakers is too much.

  • Too much for me. I think the most I have spent on shoes is like….under $30? Well, that would be sneakers. Dance shoes, on the other hand………

  • I will not be able to jusify spending $200 on shoes

  • Yes, especially for ugly ones.

  • this is a test… this is only a test…

  • Some women would say otherwise, but in my opinion, $200 is definitely too expensive.

  • that is totally unreasonable ..

  • Depends on 2 things a. how bad you want them b. your bank roll

  • I find this funny and hard to believe, but when a girl buys shoes, especially a $200 high heel, that is okay. But when a guy wants to buy a pair of shoe, particulary a pair of sneakers, that is ridiculous, in my eyes. I guess the thought of a guy buying an expensive item seems strange because usually the girl spends that kind of absurd amount of money on shoes. .

    x0x MK

  • If you ask me, everything is reasonable aslong as it doesn’t hurt you or anyone/anything else. So if someone wants to buy expensive shoes, what’s the harm?

Although, the entire content of wardrobe all together probably doesn’t even cost 200$..

  • i am a bargain/clearance shopper.  so, $200 is too much for all of the shoes my family has.

  • yes, because i’d probably not wear them, which basically defeats the point of owning shoes

  • Not if you’re rich. Would I spent $200 on shoes? Hell no! The most I spent (well, actually my mom bought them for me ) was $75 on some nice Nike’s. My other gym shoes were 3 years old and falling apart. I guess the more expensive you buy, the better made? But of course these Jordan shoes are more expensive because of the name. Kinda ridiculous.

  • i wouldn’t think so if these shoes were, say, italian custom made leather oxfords or something…

  • THAT IS WAY TO MUCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i’d say YES *tai gui le* too expensive!  but depending on your income, it could be nothing…

  • heck yeah, that’s too much for some stinking shoe.  just imagine what you can do with 200.

    1.  that’s two weeks of food supply.
    2.  that’s 20 movies
    3.  hangout with friends for two weeks.
    4.  flight to seattle from san francisco.
    5.  new clothes.
    6.  20 haircuts.

  • Yes, especially when you’re 14!

  • about $170 dollars to much

  • The shoes I have on my feet right now cost me $19.99.

  • for tennis shoes yes… for italian handmade shoes…no ~ jack

  • $200….on shoes….ummm….i don’t thinks so!

  • not much… is reasonable for jordan

  • Yes, $200 is too much for a pair of shoes.

  • No. If you have the money and it makes you happy go for it.

  • For THOSE particular shoes, then yes it is too much.

…however, I have been known to add $200 designer shoes to my wishlists <3

  • I think it is a riduculous amount!

  • it is wayy too much

  • I don’t like to spend more than $20 on a pair of shoes. Wasting money makes me sick to my stomach.

  • $200 would pay off the pediatrician’s and anesthetist’s bills. Heck no, I wouldn’t pay that for shoes right now… or ever. $200 could get a plane ticket to London (or Moscow, even, in the middle of January). $200 would buy about 85 yards of the six foot wide canvas that I use to make my paintings. Or fix the broken left hand mirror and air conditioning on my car. I could buy an entire new wardrobe for $200.

  • for me it’s too much

  • $200 is too much in my opinion. I always try my best to keep the shoes that I buy under $100.

  • Then again, when I was a competitive long distance runner, I’d spend $80-$150 on my season’s shoes (cleats and tennis).

  • btw those are some ugly shoes.

  • Only if it’s made in the U.S.A then it’s worth then $200, I would buy it if it was made in the U.S.A.

  • yes. lol that’s outrageous. that’s like asking if $200 is reasonable for a pair of jeans or a purse -_- obivously it’s for the name. but the quality of jordans is great, don’t get me wrong. my little cousin got a pair but on EBAY & they were used but still fresh none the less.

  • YES, YES, YES, a million times YES.

  • I feel like I’m paying a ton if I get shoes that cost more than twenty.

  • well if a boy wants those shoes and knows they’re 200,
more than likely he’s going to be one of those kids
    that

walk a certain way so they don’t crease them
    take them off whenever running
or better learn how to run a certain way
walking through large distance of dirt, mud, grass
if it rains, he’d probably take them off and stuff it under his shirt
and then take them home to give it a little
wash on the side to make sure they look like
    they just bought it.

i know this because my brother with his jordans, 100 only though,
takes care of them and loves his shoes and so do his little friends.

So you buy it for the name so you can show it off as your trophies.
Is it worth it? To me… no…but i got to give them props
for caring so much about their expensive shoes.

  • Yes it’s to much at least for me ….

  • oh and its the new crazy thing for guys
to have expensive brand name Kicks
for their own shoe collection, to wear sure, but
    like i said, to SHOW.

seems like some men are finally understanding
the shoe craze more than women

  • nope. i’ve spent more on my shoes. and guys, the collect sneakers and some are waaayyy more expensive than that!

  • I suppose it’s reasonable if your life depended on it.

    Oh these fetishes!

  • Yes.. in fact, I dont like to pay more than $75… I can buy a pair of shows and they last for one or two years.. I dont see why we feel we must buy things for thier look or because its what we are “supposed” to do. I wear shoes and shirts until they wear-out, then I buy more…

Of course, I am 25 and pay for everything but my phone – so I dont have my parents paying for my clothes and shoes any more…

  • Yes.

Was the 659 or whatever it was your comment record?

  • If you’re participating in some activity where high quality footwear increases your performance or safety, then $200 might be reasonable. But for most people, and most budgets, where all they’re really buying is image, it’s just plain stupid.

  • For sneakers, YEAH.
I’d spend $200 on a nice pair of heels, though. :P

  • I’ve spent that much on boots, but never just regular shoes.  I guess it depends on if you can afford it, why not…….  But in general, yeah I’d say it’s too much.

  • Psh, yes! But that doesn’t stop my boyfriend.
    he LOVES shoes.

    Xo

  • Unless you are a professional athlete buying special shoes, or something of that sort, then yes.

  • erm. actually i was planning to buy a pair at SGD749. so the answer to that. erm, no.

  • I remember how pissed I was when Nike bought Converse and jacked up their prices. Where I had bought two pairs of Chuck Taylors for fifty bucks, I had to spend fifty for one pair the next time around.

    Two hundred is just ridiculous.

  • That’s a bit excessive.

If someone wanted me to pay $200 for shoes, I’d tell them to promptly go fornicate with themselves.

  • I will say yes. I mean god. I never thought it would ever reach that cost. 125-130 is plenty these days. I usually spend between 75 and 85 for a new pair of Asics tho I was able to get my last one for 65 with free inner soles tossed in :) .

I love Jordans as much as anyone and those look great. But uh. come on. 200 bucks. wow

  • too much, especially for sport shoes.

  • That’s way too much, especially for those. They’re nothing special and you’re essentially just buying the Jordan name. I mean, seriously…they’re leather and rubber just like every other shoe.

The only excuse for spending 200 dollars on shoes is if you make 100,000 dollars a year and can easily afford it. Actually, let me put it this way– I have a friend who made 24 million dollars in 2005 and is a total shoe whore. And the most he ever spent on a pair was 250 bucks because he knew that, while he could afford it, anything else was impractical and a waste of money. And those 250 dollar shoes were custom-made. (Yes, I actually did ask him the most he ever spent on a shoe.)

  • @another_rebel_without_a_cause - Me too! I love Chucks and have about six pairs at 25-30 dollars per pair and now I can’t even afford a new pair for school. It’s ridiculous!

  • you haven’t see what’s expensive in the female shoe department.

  • YES. that pair could last for yrss..

  • @Drakonskyr - No, No. THOSE shoes were $300 fucking dollars. Those shoes rule.

These shoes are $200 fucking dollars. These shoes suck.

  • Those sneakers are so sexy.  So because I want them, no it isn’t a lot.

But in a normal situation, yes.

  • In the ’80s, sneakers were always costing $100-$250. Strictly speaking, that’s not as much money today as it was then. So I don’t think it’s so bad.

  • nope!  that is a weeks worth of groceries!

  • On those shoes yes, because they are just plain ugly. On other shoes, like a nice pair of heels that I could wear for years to come, no.

  • waaaaay too much

  • yes, $200 is too much, unless they are athletic shoes (for a serious athlete), or are made with precious gems or metals.

  • Thay’s absolutely ridiculous.

  • Unless you have more money than brains….$200 is a crazy amount for a pair of shoes…..

  • I think I spend $200 on shoes every 2-3 years, combined.

For one pair of shoes? Really? I mean, its bad enough that you have to pay nearly that much for a tire, but those are almost guaranteed to last you a bit

  • $200 for really high quality shoes for work or for an athletic activity? Fine.  $200 for shoes that are only that expensive because they’re designed by someone famous (I don’t care who)? Too much, imo.

  • Those are pretty cool. In middle some of my classmates spetn that much on Jordans shoes.  Or more.

  • On gym shoes made in a sweat shop, yeah. But that would be a bargain if we were talking haute couture, hand crafted, Louboutin type shoes.  In that case though, the shoe is more like a wearable sculpture than an accessory.

  • $200 isn’t too much.

  • Is $200 “reasonable” for a pair of sneakers???  NO!

  • That is expensive but ok. I once paid 199 Euro ($ 292) for inline skates.

  • For a pair of sneakers?  Yes, I believe that’s too much.  I think the average ball player would be better off putting that money towards a gym membership.  Then again, I’m not a shoe person.  I own one functional pair of shoes — high top hiking boots — that I wear everywhere (funerals, weddings, etc.).

  • Despite perspective, $200 is ridiculous. I don’t care if you’re rich, go do something productive with the money…

  • ‘These shoes are $200 fuckin’ dollars…” That’s way too much for shoes.
    OMG shoes.

  • Uh,  yes.. too much.. Unless he is paying for them. Shoes don’t even cost $10 to make..

  • Absurdly overpriced. That’s half a month’s rent.

  • Those shoes better last for the rest of my life and be in perfect condition if they’re $200……..

That is way too much to spend on shoes.
The most I’ve ever spent on a pair of shoes was $40.

  • No, I mean MAYBE if they were nicer shoes (meaning something you would wear to a formal occassion) then…possibly, but honestly I think even the prices for formal wear shoes can be ridiculous too.

  • yes. my god. i’ve never spent over about $50 for shoes.

  • depends if you could afford it..200 is too much for me but thats because im a student

  • thats a third of my paycheck!

heck no….too much to spend on one item…!

  • If you have the money, eh, what the hell… go for it. Can’t say I haven’t done that… *hugs old, ugly Ugg boots*

  • Yes, but if you can afford it.. why not?

  • yes ! and greed.. how can anyone think of buying something that will not last for a year… and when i read this.. I thought about the Virgina Tech shootings.. and the reasons the person did what he did.. there are many families out on the streets due to less jobs.. and or other things… and I personally think all of this greed and tagging name brands.. should stop… until Amerika can help their own… but then it is the JOnes thingy.. or the Smiths… lets keep up with our neighbors…status symbols

I have and you do not.. all status… not real people just plastic folks with their plastic cards! destroying our eco-systems on a moment to moment …. just so we can have what is really not needed.

  • Way to much for a pair of shoes!

  • well, if you really like them, and can afford them

go for itwho am i to say how much other people should spend on the things they want?why do we make money if not to spend it?

  • definitely too much.
buy normal priced shoes for basketball. what happens when these $200 ones wear out? or even if you never use them.

get your money’s worth. don’t get the shoes.

  • They’re Jordans! Come on.

  • I’d spend 130 on a pair of running shoes so I suppose 200 isn’t that much more. I wouldn’t spend it on those though… They’d have to be REAL nice and I’d have to have lots of money to spare…

  • I think it would have to depend on the shoe and it’s purpose. I could see so if it were for work, or mountain climbing, but honestly, 200.00 for a pair of shoes isn’t unheard of by any means in this day.

  • Haha. That’s not too bad compared to SB Dunks that go over $1000. Shoe-heads get so hyped up over shoes that they’re willing to pay for a much higher price than the shoes would normally sell for. These Jordans should only cost about $100 just like any other pair would. The hype is what makes it so expensive. I wouldn’t mind buying shoes $200 but that’s my limit. These Jordans are ugly. There are much better pairs to spend $200 than this.

  • wellllll…………for me personally; yes.  but i’m a huge cheapskate.
when i want something that is more than what i normally like to pay, i divide the price but how much i think i’ll wear it.  if i’ll wear it a lot, i go ahead and buy it.
so for tennis shoes, for me, yes.  for other people, maybe not.

  • oh my. I got three pairs of really nice shoes this past summer for a total under 60 dollars.

200 dollars is just way too much…to me at least.

  • Well, that’s too much for me.

But I guess if you’re rich, what’s another $200? There’s just a lot more you could spend your money on reasonably.

  • It’s a lot of money for a pair of sneakers.  I don’t know if it’s reasonable for his budget, but it would be too much for mine.

  • Nope. Anything for the J’s.  Otherwise, yeah it’s a little much. Good thing I wear Boys’ size and spend half the amount.

  • 200 hundred dollars could buy me TONS boxes of mac and cheese!! that would last me months! [always been a family joke]

  • By the way… hell naw, ain’t no way. What’s wrong? Man, he done stepped on my J’s! Look it up!

  • @charlieseros - WORD.

  • Okay, so I complete my incomplete comments. Jordans SPECIFICALLY are considered something like the designer jeans of sneakers. So if someone is willing to spend $280 on William Rast, they can’t hate on the guy who spends $220 on J’s. Same as the chick who spends $1200 on a Louise V. I can buy 12 of my Jordans on that amount. It’s just personal taste and level of obsession. Like spending $20 on a coin that only cashed in at $0.25. That’s just how it is – VERY interesting how everyone is looking at those pair of shoes as functional rather than flossin.

  • haha, no way would I ever spend $200 on shoes. It just seems kind of rediculous in my perspective.

  • For specialized shoes that’s not totally unreasonable.  If it has a lot of bells and whistles that are specially designed to protect your feet it’s worth it.  I spent over a year not being able to walk because I was hiking, walking and working out in cheap shoes which severly damaged the tendons in my feet.  I now spend a minimum of $100 when I buy shoes for those purposes.

  • No! Shoes last forever and define a person. We should worship shoes like Gods. Who cares about people that don’t have shoes in the world?

  • depends on the shoes and the budget.  I bought some $100 dollar leather dansko shoes that have lasted me about three years or more so far (and still look great) and I had enough money at the time to do that.  $200 for sneakers seems like too much though.  I seriously doubt that they would last long enough to make the money worthwhile.
in my opinion, the 20 dollar shoes are rarely worth it.  The almost never last more than a couple months for me and they tend to have cheap soles.

  • not for those shoes. . .

  • for me yes, but i have a child and family to worry about.. maybe not for a single person with money to blow

  • It’s quite a bit of money, but if he can afford it, then why not?  My theory is if you have the extra funds, go for broke!

  • nope.  when it comes to my feet, i don’t go cheap.

  • those shoes are hideous.

i spent $75 on an (AWESOME)pair of pumas once, and i think i can honestly say that it’s the most i ever spent on one item of clothing.  i had a lot of money at the time and i still thought $75 was too much.  these shoes though,  half of the material is suede, so when i went trekking through a mud filled corn maze for 45 minutes two years ago, i was very concerned that i had ruined my shoes forever.  i soaked them in some water when i got home and after a week it looked like there was barely any damage at all.  i still have these shoes.

but if there were some shoes that cost about $100 and my boyfriend liked them as well, he would probably buy them for me. i’ve recently convinced him to buy me a zune for my birthday next month, scoooooooore.

  • It depends on the shoes.

  • Hell to the freaking no!!!
If I’m spending 200 dollars for a pair of shoes they better last me for ten years and be trimmed in gold.

  • NO!  That’s cost way too much for a pair of sneakers.

  • I be famous and vindicated. Yayness!

It’s good to know I’m not just a cheap old troll denying the kid a pair of school shoes.

  • I thought $150 was alot for shoes…I won’t pay over $60 for a pair for myself. Unless I really freakin want them and have wanted them forever.

  • I’m glad I deleted my comment before you linked that.

I usually do on her site.

  • I would never spend that much money on a pair of shoes.

  • yeah, there’s no way anyone can justify spending that much when people all over the world are dying because they have nothing at all

  • $200 is def. too much =/ The more expensive the pair of shoes are, the faster they go out of trend.

  • no, i believe that 200 doll hairs is reasonable, mostly because i have an over-priced love affair with clothing and all to do with it.

  • Reasonable is subjective to whatever your income is. Because of the name being tied to value issue, this is no different than girls buying a LV bag or a Gucci wallet — you can find a generic brand for about 1/10 the cost, but the prestige just won’t be there. I personally would never buy $200 b-ball shoes; $60 ones are expensive enough.

  • It’s no different than the girls who pay that much for Uggs.

  • for her kid? NO WAYYYYY. kids dont need shoes like that. jordans are overratedd.

  • they’d better have wings

  • Some women routinely spend $500+ on Gucci, Jimmy Choos, and manolo blahnik slippers/sandals.  What’s the big deal on spending $200 on a pair of Jordans?  You just can’t blame Nike’s marketing team for doing a damn fine job.

  • Yes… I never pay full price for shoes.  I think regular shoes are over-priced.  I just wait till the shoes I want go on sale – or just ignore all the full price pairs and go straight to the discount racks…

  • $200 dollars on a pair of shoes depends on how financially stable you are …if you’re spending $200 on shoes and forgot rent …and baby food YES its an issue. If $200 is not going to dent your finances then i say why the hell not!!!

For a good pair of shoes ..I would indeed splurge (but only if my budget allows it )

  • For me and most of the people I know yes, but for the people who have lots of money, no.

  • No, but maybe too much to spend on sneakers. However I wouldn’t think it unreasonable to shell out $200 for an amazing pair of heels though.

  • haha there’s no such thing as TOO much, as long as you can afford it…

  • At least it as more material than Jimmy Choo’s hahahaha

  • I’m not a shoe person. I’ve warn the same kind of shoes for about 6 years, and of those 6 years, I’ve only bought two pairs of shoes. They were maybe like 40 bucks. I don’t even buy new clothes. I do things the inexpensive way…just don’t buy at all!!!

  • rediculous! 200$ what’s in it? cheap chinese labor, woven plant fibers, dead cow skin, sour crude petroleum based doodads, and a well known name that probably cost $100 to put on.

these expensive shoes are like 75% profit, 7% marketing, 3% packaging, 8% labor, and 7% stuff

  • i’d never pay more than 90 dollars for shoes. unless of course they are custom and tailored to my feet and style.

  • Yes! And I’m a female! Here’s why-you trip, fall, hit them against something and BOOM! your shoes are dirty. Now spend another $20-30 bucks getting them cleaned every time. Even if you poop $200/min, it’s not worth it. $5 in asia!

  • YESSS! it is indeed pointless to buy those shoes.

okay it is pointless. the only difference is mainly brand. some people are like “OMG I HAVE TO HAVE THESE SHOES!” and i think it is pointless to spend soo much money on it when it could break maybe in like 2 months depending on how much he/she wears the shoes. they style can change next month and a brand of shoe can be the ‘must have’ shoe. i see it pointless to buy the shoe. use the extra money for something else and buy a lesser brand shoe.

  • well jordans are like the hottest thing out there these days i mean if u really want to spend the money then yes it is reasonable

  • for those shoes yes… for designer heels I would consider spending $200. or really really nice cowboy boots

  • 50$ is too much for a pair of shoes…

  • Absolutely. Way too much.
