Comment Record
A site attempted to hit the most comments ever on his site. Xanga even featured him on their front page and he ended up with 265 comments which is very impressive. His goal was 10,000 comments.
I thought it might be fun to try something less ambitious.
I would like to try to break my own comment record which is 1085 comments on a single post. I would like to try to do it in only 24 hours time.
So help me out and comment and recommend if you can. (No comment spamming).
Do you think we can hit 1085 comments in a 24 hour period?
Edit: We only have about 3 and a half hours left. It is 3:06 pm. central time here and 6:37 p.m central time will be the 24 hour mark.We need to get about 200 more comments.

But I think it’s a better idea for you to go for 1086 comments if your record is 1085.

I have some serious doubts about the likelihood of this happening.
In order to accomplish that you will have to average 45.25 comments per hour. And while that may seem reasonable since you have gotten a lot more than that in an hour before it would seem to be that as the hours drag on the rate at which they are left will probably drop also. There are also the over night hours which tend to be rather slow as many people sleep during those hours. I just cannot accept that you have a very good chance for success.
Comment!! Also, we should have people start up conversations so as to add to the posts and be legit. I suggest time travel as a topic, only because I know a lot about it.
I think the idea is lame. Comments should be considered for their substance. This should be esepcailly true here.

Actually, you know what, looking at your “average age” post, I don’t think you can do it unless there is a bit of spammage involved. Because that post has only reached 800 comments in about the same time period, and it would seem like it would be easy for anyone, even a first timer to your site, to just write down their age, so for 12000 views, I would’ve expected a lot more comments.
You should edit this post and say you’re deleting your account. You’ll definitely get the comments rolling in then.

Before I would comment on such a post, I would need clarification on a few points. First, the originally cited site (with the lofty goal of 10,000 comments) – what was the content of the post. If it were an in depth look at an issue about which the author felt passionate, with an end note that pleaded with the readers to spread the word, then I might be inclined to help the author in their cause.
If, however, the post was simply a request for comments, with absolutely no other call to action, then I see two problems. First, this would not be featured content – this would be crappy content. Second, as we learned in 2005 from the book “The Long Tail,” the days of the “hit” are over – there is no sense in promoting a product as “the best” because it is rarely “best” for the majority, given disparate interpretations of quality. Further degradation occurs when one realizes that the product being promoted is the author himself – a sad and lonely attempt to feed ones ego, the expected outcome of which would be 15 minutes of fame, and the best outcome of which would be imaginary placement at the top of a truly insignificant list.
Of course, your question is whether you can get 1.085 comments in a 24 hour period, and I would state firmly that I believe you can. However, I perceive this more as “rallying the troops” than shameless self-promotion. I do believe, given the finite number of Xanga users, that 10,000 is beyond anyone. And, I’m not sure anything would be gained by this, other than the aforementioned ego boost, so what would be the purpose?
