I feel personally convicted about it and don’t use it.
So, for me, I guess I would call it a sin. I guess it depends on the context of the word. It has become something that is now considered to be profanity in our society. So… insert incomplete thought here. Yeah.
Hmmm… no but I’m not a big cusser…
Usually when you swear though I don’t think your in a very spiritual place… lol
No…
because…it is the proper term for an animal, an ass. and it has taken on various cultural meanings, one of which is “to be an ass” another of which is an alternative colloquial term for the derriere.
No. Come on, people, they’re just WORDS. Words only have the power you GIVE them. Oh wait, we’re all supposed to be politically correct. Screw you, then.
i’m not a huge fan of the word.
Nah… I think anyone who says that is trying to make a human feel guilty about their humanity…
Not that cussing comes with humanity- just that cussing might be the least of any sin considered sinful, if you consider some of the junk humans have come up to do these days…
a word is just a word.
Ass. Whah? Oh, sorry Papa Benny.
Disrespectful.
I don’t think my ass minds if I take its name in vain.
Oh, for fuck’s sake. No.
I personally don’t use the word for the sake of decorum, but no, it’s not a sin.
No….it is just another word for a part of your body. Or, it can also be used as an adjective or adverb for that matter. It is just a word that has gotten a bad reputation.
Yes, the book of Hezekiah condemns the use of two (*) asterics.
no. i never understood why ‘bad words’ were considered to be so bad. i don’t have a problem with them as long as a person doesn’t use them ALL the time (like the people who say ‘f***’ or some variation of it multiple times in one sentence…makes you sound very unintelligent). i know it offends some people though, so i refrain unless i’m very angry or quoting something specific
I don’t think it’s nice to say it, a sin? depends on how it’s used I would think.
I wouldn’t consider it a sin, but I also wouldn’t encourage use of the word unless referring to a donkey.
Apparently you do.
Well, I don’t cuss, but I think we sin with our speech a lot more than we realize.
Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.”
That is tough.
I don’t really believe that curing is a sin unless you use it to hurt someone’s feeling, then it’s a sin.
No
cheating on your spouse is a sin, murder is a sin…how could using the word “ass” be equated with those?
No. Just like bitch, ass was originally used as a title for an animal.
@UnworthyofHisgrace - I would whole-heartedly agree. A lot of people are afraid of using certain words, but then say the exact same thing in other words (I don’t see the difference in “damn you,” “dang you,” and “darn you”)
Only if you don’t REALLY mean it!
@OfElection - A lot of people say they are only words, but words mean things. Words said in certain contexts are sinful. Just like the same word in another context isn’t. Words are serious, use them wisely! It’s how we comunicate
@UnworthyofHisgrace - I’m glad somebody liked it. Hezekiah is one of my favorite Old Testament books.
honestly, i think swearing in general is crude and unprofessional… but, i’m not sure how it coincides with sin.
@LSP1 - Whats funny is when people start actually searching for it in the Bible! LOL
I find that some words such as crap, ass, damn, hell are 1st degree word choices. they’re “bad” but not soap in mouth words. shit and bitch, pissed would be a second degree word. and the f word would be 3rd degree. the worst is c-word and should never be said.
i have no problem saying 1st and 2nd degree, but i rarely cuss, only if i’m really angry or ticked off at something.
to answer your question, i don’t find it a sinful, but over excessive use is wrong in normal conversation
No, I don’t consider it a sin.
To be honest, I don’t know. I avoid it in my own speech. But I have used it when reading something or quoting something else.
Is it an obscenity? I wish I knew.
No – it’s right there in the King James version of the Ten Commandments… “Do not covet…your neighbour’s ass”
Nah.
That shirt is fricking hilarious!
@MellaMom - I’m REALLY sad that you guys are leaving. See you tomorrow at Gary & Angela’s house.
hey , in the bible it uses the word , so it shouldn`t be a sin , unless used to offend or hurt someone .
it`s all about intentions , isn`t it ?
Not a sin, but i refrain from using it.
Maybe.. It’s in the Bible! Course then it’s talking about donkeys..
Anyway..
I think using “****” words makes you sound idiotic..
And goodness..
Stop saying that words are just words..
..Ok they are..
But not on their own..
when you speak a word you give it power..
So use your power carefully and try not to sound too stupid..
No but, I don’t curse or use that word other than it’s original content use for.
xx donkey!!!
No.
no…
Definetely not.
Although I was taught cursing is unseemly and not the best manners I never really thought using words like crap or ass, etc was a sin and I think it’s really not that big of a deal either. Using the Lord’s name in vain, however, I do believe is a sin. Although I’m not sure about expressions like Oh My God. I was taught not to swear on God (Like “I swear to God”) or use the lord’s name in vain like saying G-damn. Being a NYer the F and S words slip out occasionally when I’m annoyed. I do use them sometimes in talking; in fact I just recently learned that more than I realized, I do swear as a matter of course and that I must learn to guard my tongue a lot better.
No.
Sinful? No. I don’t even refrain from using it in normal conversations.. then again I don’t use it every other sentence.
it is only if you think it is. and it’s not to me. it’s just vocabulary.
…No.
In a way, because Christians shouldn’t speak like so many people in the word who have loose tongues. We’re supposed to be as upstanding as possible.
No. An ass is a donkey.
I actually think that it’s used to describe a donkey in some versions of the Bible. So, I’m guessing it depends on your meaning behind it
I don’t think a word can be a sin.
Or a body part.
Or a word for a body part.
Only ACTIONS can be sins.
I think if anyone literally want to refer to one of their body parts as a “donkey”, that is surely their own personal choice.
An ass is used to carry supplies. They are hearty animals capable of traveling great distances under a heavy load.
I’ve been called an ass a number of times this summer.
Tuesday will tell…
I never though I would say “lmao” here.
But to answer the question, I do think it’s a little innapropriate, unless you’re referring to a donkey or something. I don’t cuss.
But hey, that’s just me, everyone has an opinion.
Proverbs 4:24 says, “Avoid all perverse talk; stay far from corrupt speech.” (NLT) Swearing is swearing, reguardless of how society views certain words. But like many have said, ‘ass’ is a more technical term for donkey, so I suppose if used in that context it wouldn’t be a sin (unless of course you were using ‘ass’ instead of ‘donkey’ just to get away with swearing, like children seem to do).
Not if it’s ‘Arse’ here in America, and ‘Ass’ in UK. Heeheheh
lmao
I don’t think any swear word is a sin. If you’re talking about the Christian perspective of what sin is… well, the Bible says nothing about potty words. It just says not to swear by God’s name, and I hardly think most of the trash words people are using these days really qualify.
Incidentally, the Bible doesn’t forbid consumption of alcohol, either; it just discourages binge drinking. And nowhere does it say that sex should be a taboo subject. I mean, look at Song of Solomon!
Yeah…
The problem with Christianity today is that it’s gotten to where Christians will just find little things of society they don’t like; find verses in the Bible that could, with a bit of imagination, be stretched to include those things; and beat people who do those things over the head with a Book that really has very little to do with what they’re trying to preach. No one cares about lying or gossip or slander or the Golden Rule anymore.
Christianity today is almost an entirely separate religion from the establishment created by Mr. Christ 2000-odd years ago. Whereas then Christianity meant being forgiven and liberated from a vicious cycle of bad attitude, today it seems to be more about people sitting around drinking tea and talking about their perfect track records of not smoking, not drinking, not talking about sex in public, and not using select potty words unless they’re really really angry about something–all things that are not listed as inherently sinful anywhere in the Bible.
Technically it is a sin since we can’t use it in everyday language. I try to refrain from cursing, not because it is a sin, but because there are better words in my vocabulary. I don’t like to curse.
No.
@ArphaxadHunter - *Ahem* Anyway, that’s my view on it. And I can say all this because I myself am a follower of Mr. Christ, annoyed at these supposed fellow followers who try to use strict rules to discern for themselves the good people from the bad people–[Never mind leaving judgment for God; let's all just divide people into categories so God has less trouble figuring out who's good (us) and who's bad (them). And while we're at it, let's alienate anyone who doesn't follow our new set of rules, because they're clearly a different kind of people not worthy of God's attention.]

I noticed that it began to be used freely on network TV in 1991 just after Bush 41 told Sadaam Hussein, “I’m going to kick your a**.” That announcement was printed in headlines, re-played endlessly on TV news, and suddenly the word was in music and TV everywhere.
Prior to the first Gulf War, pop music might coyly allude to it, e.g. Huey Lewis & the News “The Heart of Rock ‘n’ Roll” from 1983. When they play their music That hard rock music They like it with a lot of flash But its still that same old back beat rhythm That really kicks em in the [drum beat]
Once the President freely said, radio felt free to play it without censorship, e.g. Toby Keith’s “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue” in 2002: We’ll put a boot in your a**, It’s the American way
President Carter said the same thing in 1980–that is, that he planned to plant his foot in Ted Kennedy’s derriere–but it didn’t have the same effect on popular culture, probably because it was just politics, not war.

I’m not really sure where it says in the Bible that profanity is a sin… anyone have that answer for me? It almost seems that cursing is just not what “polite society” does, not that it’s a God-mandated evil.
No. But calling someone an ass can be.
no. don’t they use ass in the bible? they didn’t censor it in my old children’s bible books…

Teehee.
I don’t think cussing is a sin. I think not cussing is a social nicety created by the world. However, if one’s cussing will lead someone astray, then it’s a sin. For example, Christians are commonly seen as non-cussing individuals. So a Christian using obscenities might lead observers to think that they’re being hypocritical, thus misrepresenting the Christian faith. Cussing, alone, is not a sin.
If it is, then a lot of people are going to Hell for it. As if it wasn’t overpopulated enough.
A word is a word. It’s only bad if you label it so and give it that power. It’s like the number 666. Christians are sooo afraid of it because it’s “the number of the beast.” Well, the Bible also says that it is a human number, so it’s nothing to be afraid of. By the way, taking the Lord’s name is vain is claiming to be a child of God but living a lifestyle that is not in line with the teachings He gave us through His word. A simple seven letter word is a minor offense compared to the one who bears false witness of his or her own character.
Nah, it wasn’t censored…so it’s all good.
No, it’s not a sin. It’s just indecent, vulgar, and unnecessary. You can always just say “butt.” Or “donkey.”
I don’t think it’s necessarilly a sin, but it certainly is a bad habit that reflects poorly on people when they use it.
it’s used in the bible?
Not exactly a sin. But it is a vulgarity that should not be used in polite company. Especially around children. They get exposed to enough trash talk in the culture as it is. It doesn’t do any good to have the adults around them giving the impression that this is okay.
