Does Alabama Think You are Fat?
Alabama is going to start a new program that will require state workers to pay $25 extra per month for health insurance if they are classified as obese.
If your BMI is 35 or over, you will be classified as fat and have to pay the extra money.
Now go to this link and calculate your BMI: Link
Does Alabama think you are fat?

i’m normal by about .4 yay me
Nope, Alabama must love me
BMI is a faulty measure of weight.
According to my BMI, I’m overweight.
I am underweight. Or normal.
Nope. I am fine. Glad my butt doesn’t count.
California thinks I’m fat already. XP
no….and gee what a relief, if alabama thought i was fat, i don’t know how i would ever go on.
Nope! I’m excited, because now I’m normal. About 6 months ago, I would have been considered overweight, but not obese.
No.
I’m not
but I’m sure a lot of people are…
no. i’m almost underweight.
No thanks. I never plan to live in Alabama. I think those workers who are charged extra are being discriminated against. This study shows that being obese does not automatically make one unhealthy. Where’s the ACLU?
Although the BMI doesn’t take body composition into account, once you get to the BMI’s classifying Obese… you are definitely not a healthy weight-
thats a good way to get people healthier..
Nope. That calculation only works for couch potatoes. Take a body builder and calculate his/her BMI. Bet they show up obese! Doesn’t make them unhealthy.
I do not need a calculator to know that ole’ Bammy would say I’sa fat!
yes i’d be shelling out the extra money.
my employer makes everyone sign a yearly pledge to be smoke and tobacco free. if you’re caught smoking, then you have to go to counseling and if you get busted twice, you’re fired.
oh and smokers that were grandfathered in before the non-smoking rule went into effect have to pay about $50 more a month for health insurance.
Underweight. I wonder if they’ll give me money to gain weight. Doubt it.
Can you say “the pot is calling the kettle black”?
My BMI is 23 I thought it would be just a bit lower
normal…. =)
hahaha,,,im not interested enough in what alabama or anyone else thinks to check,,, maybe someone could check for me,,, i rarely google stuff either,,, i already know most of it anyway.
If anyone thinks I’m fat, they SERIOUSLY need glasses!
I don’t like BMI that’s measured purely by height, weight and gender. So… I didn’t take the test.
17.8 is my BMI so I’m underweight. I have had insurance turn me down because I am underweight. Do they think we are all supposed to be perfect? I have news for them, we ain’t and ain’t never gonna be in this flesh!
Nope.
19.9 yeah that is me, thin but not skinny. that measurement is junk if you are a well built man
nope! apparently im normal. :)
@EilisAngelos - Oh, was there a place where it asked for your Gender? I didn’t see that if it did. My number would be even lower is THATS figured in!
i’m severely underweight and have been trying to gain weight for years. at least twiggy was real thin too.
35 on the BMI is pretty crazy so y’know… can’t really blame them for enforcing this…
Nope.
But really, It’s Alabama. Who’s ever listened to Alabama?
I’m normal.
LOL according to that I’m underweight cuz I have 16.8 BMI I’m really healthy I’m just tiny lmao
Nah. They just think I’m ugly.
Nope, just under it.
I’m right on the edge of underweight and normal. I guess I wouldn’t have to pay the extra $25. Yay.
way underweight . i`m probably one of the few people who actually want to gain weight . (;
I will neither confirm or deny my BMI.
bammy thinks I am overweight………..I guess I will keep my 25 dollars and stay in good ole NJ….
No.
But they’d be even less likely to think so if they measured waist size instead.
yes, they would. bastards.
Yep. Which is why I am working on it…
I live in Alabama now (military) and I’ve seen more fat people in one visit to Wal-mart than I have in my entire life. I’m talking morbidly obese and needing a canine assistant to walk. It’s ridiculous. Even the children!
This may seem unfair, but it could save a lot of lives. Something needs to change.
We had a guest speaker come in to talk to our Health Class about the BMI chart during my freshman year @ college. He called it the “piece of crap chart” because it doesn’t take muscle mass into account. In fact, Arnold Schwarzenegger is considered obese by this chart.
I am considered overweight by the BMI chart, but I’m healthy. I just have these two giant weights under my shirt that contribute a lot to my body weight.
18.8 baby. Perfectly normal.
In Alabama, my home state, after the locals have put back a 6 pack or two I aint considered fat….
yeeehaa!
I’m “normal” so what does that say about the test?
Seriously, though -I think that is a hateful attitude. What are they going to do next? Monitor your diet? Check if you might have a hereditary disease running in your family? Require mandatory exercise?
No, no they don’t.
^_^
No but I do. Myself, not you. I am a fat disgusting pig.
20.8
Negative. I am a twenty point something.
@joeysmore - I love it!
Your BMI is
24.4
, indicating your weight is in the
Normal
category for adults of your height.
Mine is 30. Thus the website says I am obese but according to Alabama I am not.
As for the BMI, I have some serious issues with that concept. It ignores what a person’s weight is from. Someone could be very musclebound and have a very low body fat index yet have a BMI score saying they are obese. It is also possible for someone to have a very high body fat index and have a low BMI score.
I just find it ironic that a southern state is doing this. The land of sweet tea, fried chicken and a gravy for everything. Riiiiight.
@storyslut - I have always been told that I was vertically challenged, or “I am not fat just too short!”
No, I’m normal.
But there are a lot more factors to healthy weight than that.
@joeysmore - lol, I can’t use that though. I’m just “curvy” that’s my story and I am sticking to it.
Fuck Alabama. just saying.
My number’s currently at 19.2, but I hope to someday pass the 18 barrier.
Nope, apparently I’m “normal”.
nope i’m normal!
nope, i’m normal. and i say, good for alabama! sure, some people have health problems that make them obese. face it people. most people are obese because of themselves. start taking responsibility for your own actions!
I’m pretty normal :]
No, but BMI isn’t always reliable… you can be skinnyfat or just really muscular. It’s also a problem for the very young or very old…
apparently, i fluctuate between underweight and normal… x]
Nope.
I’m technically overweight by about .2
I blame the boobs gettin’ bigger from steroids. Damn boobs.
I don’t care what Alabama thinks. Then again, I don’t live there.
23.2
My doctor and Alabama think I am just fine. Such nice assurance.
I am 5 pounds from being underweight.
A 35 BMI is actually really high…I’d have to weigh almost twice as much to have a 35 BMI, and I’m not even underweight o_o
BMI is bullshit. What about athletes? My BMI says I’m obese, not overweight.. Now, Dan, you’ve seen me. I’m in shape. Sure, I’m overweight, but I’m a lineman. I have a paunch, but I’ve got arms and legs of muscle.
Sucks for people in Alabama.
My BMI is 17.2. Apparently I’m dangerously underweight.
Nah.
According to the BMI, I’m overweight, but thats utter crap! I’ve got muscles more than fat, so the BMI is a false indicator.
I am going to with hell yeah.
nope
On the high end of normal… but I’m a runner; when I’ve done body composition stuff I’m on the low end of normal… if Alabama is going to make a rule like that, they ought to do it by body composition, not BMI.
I’m 18.3, so I just barely fall into the underweight category.
Did you know most anorexics are considered ‘overweight’ by their BMI, because their muscle mass is so low?
no, i’m not fat in Georgia. lol but if i were, i’d agree to pay the extra. it’s time we start taking better care of ourselves!!!
Nope, I’m the high middle end of my normal BMI.
according to the site i am 21.9, in the normal range. i guess alabama would approve.
I’m normal, but I am concerned about people who are actually very healthy and muscular. They could possibly be considered obese–and, technically, they are–if they are heavy for their height, but it’s because of musclulature. Hmmmmm….
That’s a bit of an extreme case though…
19.9. so no
According to my BMI I’m just overweight. BMIs are stupid.
Oh and the answer is No! Yay!
The sumo wrestlers think I’m fat.
nope
16.4 -underweight. 2nd percentile for my weight, according to that.
I’m 22.1 and perfectly normal weight. But I still look so skinny
. On the issue, I think it is somewhat fair. $25/month to only obese people really sends a message out too.
Let’s see here:
out of college a while
5-11 and a half, 163 with still a runner’s build.
I think I’m aight
P.S. I think that’s a joke. Talk about discrimination
.
I am overweight. But not obese. 90% of my overeating is emotional. Why don’t people target the roots of the problems? Like trying to numb emotional pain with eating…why not try to get to the root of the pain? Or eating because of boredom? Why not encourage and support people in pursuing their dreams? Sigh…I know I just need to eat less and exercise more, but sometimes it feels so ridiculously hard. God help me. I haven’t been able to overcome overeating in my own strength as much as I wish I could.
I could gain 96 pounds and would be still under the paying limit.
Its about time people started to pay for their insurance… over weight people need to get out and get fit
35 as a bmi is HUGE
Nope. I’m pretty normal =]
=.= bjg mama
big mama
Well, there’s good news and bad news.
Good news is that I’m 31.9, so I’m not classified as fat in Alabama. Bad news is that I’m 31.9. It says I’m obese *cries*
No biscuits and gravy for me this morning.
Nope, I am normal.
Normal!!
Nope, Alabama would be paying me. Hahaha. I think it is pretty ridiculous because some people have conditions in which they cannot help their obesity, and I don’t see how money can “fix” the issue.
Alabama is insane. What counts as Obese. I am 220, my BMI is 37.9. However, I do not look like I weigh 220 and my clothes are getting bigger on me. My cousin who is way bigger then me weighs less then me, and wears smaller clothes.
21.4 which puts me in the normal catagory.
The BMI is such an imperfect measurement of health. I was overweight when I wore a size 4. I am probably the high end of normal right now. The funny thing is, most people in Alabama would be considered obese according to the BMI chart. They just want an excuse to raise the rate of health insurance.
according to alabama (ironically also the state i reside in) i have a BMI of 30.9. so i wouldn’t have to pay the tax, but i would fall into the “obese” category. however, alabama is stupid because i am pregnant – and a belly full of babies is much different, and healthier than a belly full of cheeseburgers and other fat.
Nope – 24.2
A person can actually appear to be reasonably thin & still have a high BMI because it’s measuring the amount of fat v/s muscle, not just weight v/s height. Traditional “diets” can actually cause the body to consume muscle, which results in weight loss but a BMI increase and an overall degredation of health. More info can be seen here: http://jjwshw.isagenix.com/us/en/home.dhtml
A BMI of 35 is pretty bad.
Yes, Alabama thinks I’m fat… but I’m 31 weeks pregnant, and used my pregnancy weight to calculate my BMI… so I’m not sure if that still counts.
It says mine is 22.2, normal. Woo.
Wonder how long the state will be able to keep this mandate going.
My BMI is 25.6!!!! WOW!!!! I am honest to god overweight!!!! Not just in my own eyes anymore!!!! WOW!!!! I need to start dieting HARDCORE!!!!!!!! Thanks a lot Dan!!!!!! lol
Wouldn’t have to pay the insurance -grin-
I’m deffinately not fat, I don’t have to do the BMI since it’s probally the same last time I checked. Which depending on the site I’m either average or underweight.
Nope.
i’m normal.
yes!!! alabama doesn’t think i’m fat!
I wonder if that’s actually even legal? The causes for obesity vary, and are sometimes beyond the control of the person who is considered obese. Seems highly unfair, to me, to judge a person by their weight and make them pay more for something that they have no control over. I wonder how many lawsuits will come out of that decision.
Nope! Mine is normal.
…Yes, but I am healthy. I am always going to appear to look a little bigger than what I actually am because of the big scars from when I had lung surgery.
Alabama might think I’m fat…but I think they’re inbreeders.
@aj_mudd - HAHAHA nice
No, I’m average according to the BMI. Love this BMI calculator! I was playing with it by fining my family BMI scores. Haha…I was right about my sister-in-law. She thinks her weight is normal and I’m overweight compare to her. The results beg the differ. She is underweight and I’m average. So, she is the one with weight issues. Yeah, being too thin can be unhealthy.
Nope, apparently I’m “normal.” Ha!
Nope, I’m average.
