  • Buying Cigarettes

Let me give you a hypothetical.

Imagine you are walking outside a store.  Imagine a young person who is 17 asks you to go into the store and by him a pack of cigarettes.

Would you buy the cigarettes for the kid.

  • ah. many of my friends ask.
& many of them are turned down.

    i, personally, don’t smoke though.

(if i wasn’t seventeen, and i was an age older than eighteen, i wouldn’t buy them.)

  • Considering I’ve given cigarettes to a 12  year old, that doesn’t sound that unorthodox to me…

  • No. End of Story.

  • Sure, I’ll help him die a year sooner.

  • Considering that he’s a year older than I am, HELL YEAH!

  • no. but i know some kids younger than 20 that smoke and they try to get people like me to buy them smokes and i refuse. because i disapprove of smoking. it kills people every year.

  • I won’t buy cigarettes…not for a kid, not for my dad.

I am glad that you did not ask
“If a light cigarette can be just as dangerous as a regular, why do they call them light? “

  • Nope.I don’t smoke so I wouldnt bother buying for a minor.

  • Shit, I’ve helped fourteen-year-olds get cigarettes.

    FEEL THE SWEET NICOTINE LOVE

  • I most certainly would not.

  • Sweet, sweet nicotine love.

  • I wouldn’t feed my children let alone buy them smokes.

  • rofl thats actually happened to me b4… and i said NOPE SORRYYY.. walked straight into the store and bought myself a pack… and walked out.. lit one up b4 driving off LOLOL…

I know it was a dick move but I was going there for stogges myself… i rather not enjoy my cigarette in court -_- or jail O_o

  • @Drakonskyr - You’re irresponsible.

    God Bless.

  • Nope. I’ve been smoking for three years, and it’s gotten to the point where the cigarettes are smoking me, rather than me smoking the cigarettes.

  • No. I would tell them to go read a book!

  • I actually helped some minors to buy some cigar…I just cant bear the fact that they suffered the pain from the lack of nicotine in their body…they offered to pay me..but I didnt accept their money~

  • no, but i don’t think i’d be able to help them out much considering i’m 16. i’d just tell them to wait a year or hope someone else would buy them it.

  • Well, I am 17 so I technically can’t buy cigarettes. Hypothetically speaking, if I was of age, I probably would. It’s their choice and I don’t give a crap :)

  • No. I’d take the money and buy him a beer instead.

The boy needs to have his priorities straight.

  • Even if it wasn’t smoking that eventually killed them, it certainly is not good for them at all, and you would have willingly been a vital instrument in their great harm. Really, I don’t think it is very “loving of one’s neighbor” to do such a thing at all.

  • I wouldn’t purchase cigs for a kid because of undercover cops and also I don’t want them blowing smoke for all us non-smokers to get sick. But no one listens to warnings anymore, they’ll just settle for death at 40. Hey, 40 is far away when you’re 17.

“What are words for?” When no one listens anymore! It’s no use talking at all. Do you hear me? Do you care?”

    Hmm…probably not

  • no. i would for me, but no I quit. sucks huh?

  • yes! i would if i was older, i’m underage and i’d be a wreck if people didnt buy me my cigs

  • I’d do it for a friend, but not for a complete stranger

  • no way no how…I might buy for me…but then again I am 29 and holding…but to buy for an under age person…if’n ya cannot buy them you should not ask others to buy them for you…don’t want to go to jail or court or anything like that…smile

  • I don’t think the law was made to prevent kids from having something enriching. I am not going to break a law so some kid can “relax” and “feel the soothing taste” to “calm the shakes”.

    chew some blackjack bubblegum, kid.

  • @deflate@revelife - I’d also buy the kid cigarettes, right after I bought the kid some alcohol.

  • Nope. I bought them myself at that age and wish the clerk had asked for my i.d.

  • Pfft. No. If they can’t get it themselves, i’m not going to do it for them.

  • My roomate smokes and she’s my age. Her sister buys it for her and gives it to her on weekends.

  • @AvenueToTheReal - Don’t talk to me, you stupid, boring bitch.

  • @Drakonskyr -  Uncouth.

  • I would never help anyone buy cigarettes, regardless of their age.

  • people who know me know not to even bother to ask me. they would already know the answer. after the years i struggled for breath working in cafes & restaurants while i was going to school, putting up with smoke-filled dorms & apartments, popping decongestants every day (though why i wanted to be able to smell i am not sure since everything always smelled like a dirty ashtray anyway) the answer would be not just no, but H*LL NO!!!!!

  • Nope.

  • Uh, even if I was legally old enough to buy cigarettes I wouldn’t do that.  I’ve had too many people close to me suffer because of those things.

But I’m totally against the government banning smoking in restaurants and businesses.  Long story.

  • No, while I respect their ability to make their own right/wrong decisions, I won’t buy them an addictive and deadly product.

  • no.
I’ve bought them for my friends when we were younger but I wouldn’t buy them for a stranger.

  • Well… let’s do the math, now shall we:

A 17 year old comes up and asks me to go buy them cigarettes.
I am currently 2 years younger than him…
So, legally, I have to say no :)

  • No, I wouldn’t risk getting caught for someone I don’t know. Besides, smoking is bad.

  • Heck, I wouldn’t buy him a bus ticket to a government school, why would I spend money having him destroy his life with lung cancer?

  • Nope, wouldn’t do it. I hate when people smoke around me – I’m not gonna help someone do that.

  • yeah i would. cos i asked the same thing from an adult when i was 16.

  • Yeah I’d help the kid out.

  • Why do you want to know all these things? Its creepy, I say.

  • yes, i would because i used to smoke and i was one of those kids. -_- yes, I know I’m such a bad person.

  • No. I don’t break the law for children, enough said.

  • not if it was a kid i didn’t know.  if it was a friend of mine or someone i knew, probably.

they put spies out though!  creeptastic.

  • I don’t think I’d buy a pack FOR them, but if they asked for some from me, (as in, I’d already purchased them for myself) I would have no qualms handing some over.  I dunno.

  • If they were hot, yes. If they were not hot? I would ask them how much they would pay me to do it. Once they have made an offer? I buy the cigarettes and let them keep their money.

  • Nope. Could be a trick.

  • haha

i’m 17. i don’t even have to ask. now, don’t get me wrong, i don’t smoke. but just tonight, i was at a show, and i was standing in a circle with people i had just met. they ranged from about 15 – 20 years old. one guy had a pack, and he offered everyone, EVERYONE, in the circle a cigarette.

and the underage kids took ‘em.

it’s a bit sad, but to a lot of people, the age in which you decide to start killing yourself doesn’t make such a difference to them.

that being said, no, i wouldn’t, even if i could.

  • Depends on who the kid was, I’m from a small town & I know who’s parents would allow it & who’s wouldn’t

  • Ah, but the beauty of this is.. I too am only 17 years old!  Hahaha.

But if I was older, hell no!  Whatta total waste of money, especially in California!  And besides, what kind of kid smokes cigarettes nowadays?  Aren’t more severe drugs like ecstacy (sp?) and pot the craze?  Then again, I bet those are super expensive too .. where the heck do kids get all this money?!

  • there’s a reason why 18yr olds get more freedom, like buying cigarettes and voting and engage in a legal contract.

  • I was on the county transit bus, heading home from community college. On the route at the time, there was a stop at a grocery store where the bus made a loop and came back 10 mins later and headed back home. I had gotten off on the first part of the loop to stretch my legs. 3 kids in  High School walk towards me and two hang back while the leader asked me if I would buy the smokes, if they gave me 2x the money. I said no. He asked why? I figured h wouldn’t take “it is wrong” as a response because he knew with was wrong. So instead I told him that I was an Administration Of Justice major. He got this horrified look on his face and he cussed and said something along the lines of “I just asked a cop to buy me smokes” I decided to play along and said “yes can I have your address?” all 3 said no and ran off. I never saw them at that store again.

  • Hells to the no. My younger brother, who is over 18, asks me to drive him up to the store for cigarettes all the time (he doesn’t have a car) and I steadfastly refuse.

Cigarettes are disgusting. Odds are the 17-year old kid would get a ridiculously long lecture from me about black lungs and yellow teeth.

  • naaaaah just cause i’m lazy and it doesn’t really benefit me to do so

  • Yeah, sure. Though in practicality it makes no difference since I’m 17 too.

  • Oh and, by the way: you used “by” instead of “buy.”

  • I buy cigarettes from underage people all the time. Only my friends though. Dutches are a completely different story. If someone wants a dutch so they can roll up a blunt, well, then good on ya!. :D

  • Absolutely NOT and when hubby and I used to smoke I could have a full pack sitting right next to me and would not even sell or bum the kid one.
BUT hubby and I have been smoke free for 22 days and I won’t buy them for anybody 18 or not.

  • Nope.
    1.  If I care about the person, why would I willingly get them cigs?
    2.  If I don’t care about the person, why would I put my neck on the line and risk getting caught?
    No thank you :)

  • No, because I too am underage. Also, smoking =bad.

  • @death_by_chocolat -  there is NO difference in giving them a couple or buying them for the kid in both cases you are breaking the law, contributing to a minor, not to mention settin a bad example destroying thier health.

  • @one_trached_momma - ”mk.”

  • a whole box, yeah!  that worked for the chick!

  • In Germany you find cigarette automats at many corners, so a 17 year old would never ask you. Besides that smoking is allowed with 16.

  • Only if they gave me cash for a candy bar. It’s a mutual I help kill you/you help kill me sort of thing.

  • No, I would not and I am a smoker!! I did not start smoking till I was 18 so they can wait till they are 18. I would not purchase them for my children unless they were 18. It is illegal and I am not having to pay a find for anyone.

  • Nope. I wouldn’t buy them for anyone. Not my husband, any child or even a friend. No one ever did it for me when I was younger and smoked either.

  • Some kids once asked me to go in and get them cigarettes… I was 16 at the time and you can’t buy tobacco until you’re 18 here so of course I had to say no =p

And no I would not buy them cigarettes. If they can’t legally buy tobacco then why should be allowed to buy it for them and give it to them? Surely that’s just as much breaking the law as it is to serve an under-18 tobacco.

  • I want to point out that xanga says, “1 view” but there are close to 90 comments — technical error?

  • No way Jose.
I dont buy anyone ciggarettes. Thats my rule.

  • man, these ppl would break the law for something that useless?? ::shakes head::::
I soooo wish they would get busted buy a cop.

  • I have in the past, but would not anymore.  Is it really difficult to buy cigarettes when you are 17.  I smoked from 14 o 34, and I never was refused cigarettes in a store.

  • I would if I could (I’m 17).

  • No, probably not.  I rarely buy cigarettes for people I know who aren’t minors.  I don’t mind the smoking, but I figure if you can’t get a hold of them yourself then tough beans.

  • Well, if he gave me extra cash for a job well done. :)

  • they know better than to ask. this question for once is not hypothetical.

  • Cigarettes: no, I would not buy them.

Alcohol: well, it does depend on the under-ager in question, I’m sorry to say.  I have bought one alcohol on more than one occasion: then again, I knew the teen in question, and his family, reasonably well and I knew he wouldn’t go hellraising.

If I didn’t know them, then, no.

    What a set of contradictions!

  • Supposing that this is happening years from now when I’m actually older than the boy, no. I would not buy them for him. That’s basically saying, “Oh yes, I’ll go in and buy you some lung cancer for your future.”

  • nope. nope nope nope nope nope!!!!!!!

  • No, I wouldn’t, but that’s just because it’s illegal here. Where I grew up, I could walk into a store when I was still in elementary school, and purchase cigarettes — individually, or by the box … or even a carton, if I wanted to – but I didn’t have anywhere to hide a carton, and usually didn’t have enough money for that.  (I started smoking when I was 12, and quit on and off for a while, but quit cold turkey the last time in ’99…)

  • No, of course not.  But I don’t buy cigarettes for anyone, regardless of their age.

  • Mhm. They’d just get them from someone else, anyway.

  • of course!!! (why wouldnt I??) But first I’d have to make sure he wasnt some punk ass narc kid, if he was I’d find some kids to beat his ass….

  • Don’t you get fined if you purchase cigarettes for a minor…

  • No.  But only because I wouldn’t want to get caught and suffer the reprecussions of endangering a minor or whatever the fuck it would be.  But, I’d let him/her bum a few off me.  WOOP DEE DOO.

  • Haha, at 17? Nope. “You have a few more months until you can get ‘em yourself.” I let them suffer, it doesn’t hurt me any, honestly.

  • Nope, my daughters friend (17 yrs old) asked me for one yesterday. I told him no.

  • Spellcheck, Dan ;P

And no, I wouldn’t. He’s 17 and can wait one more year to buy them for himself. Patience won’t kill him.

  • Depends, what is in it for me?

  • @executioners_box - But the cigarettes will. Ha, nice one.

  • no, for a random stranger i would not.  but for a friend i had done it a multitude of times.

  • sure.

I am 17 and buy my own cigarettes, they never ask me for ID.

  • uhhh nope…no thanks…maybe if i were a smoker, but i am not so i wont.  I don’t drink and my mom does and i don’t purchase alcohol for her either…even if she gives me the moolah….

  • No. My husband smokes, and swears he’s going to stop. Our son is 5. He said he wants to smoke when he gets older ‘cus his dad does it. YIKES

  • No I wouldn’t.  One it is illegal to do so.  Two I don’t want to contribute to someone’s smoking addiction.

  • No way, smoking kills. And in this case, it’s completely preventable.

  • Probably not, just because the fines are so outrageous.  I did it for my friends when I turned 18, though.  Porn too, but that was more difficult.

  • Alchohol, yes, cigarettes, NO. I lost 3 family members to cancer so far. I don’t smoke myself, and I don’t buy cigarettes for ANYONE. Not even if they are over 18.

  • i’m a smoker. although i may sound like a hypocrite. i would not buy them cigarettes. when i was younger and not legal to smoke. i found my means to buy cigarettes. it’s hard for me to tell them that cigarettes are bad for you especially since i’m a smoker. but i wouldn’t promote it.

  • i’ve done it before
but now that im a bit older, no

  • Probably not…. not worth getting caught, but tell them that a bum down the street will do it for him if you buy him some malt liquor.

  • No. Breaking the law is not exactly my idea of fun.

  • i have a rule for this, as i have been asked by younger kids for cigarettes before.
i ask them how old they are, and if they lie and say 18, i don’t give them a cigarette.  if they are at least 15, i would give them a cigarette.

i was smoking once and this kid who looks 13 or 14 comes up to me and asks if he can, “borrow that”
    i said, “borrow what?”
and he rode off on his bike.
    kids…

  • I would go in and buy them candy instead -_-

No matter how pissed they’d get.

  • No, the last time kids were asking me to buy them cigarettes I was contemplating on whether I should just beat the crap out of them and break their jaws. That would teach them not to smoke.

  • alright, i;m not of age but…… no. i would not.
    because…
    a) they are killing themselves
    b) they are helping kill every single person who walks past them.

everytime i walk past someone who’s smoking i cough.
becuase i want them to get the message.

  • In Belgium, since a year or two, one has to be 16 to buy cigarettes. I think that’s a reasonable age for somebody to decide for his own if he wants to take the risks smoking brings with it. So yeah, a 17-year old could get cigarettes from me if I’de be in the US.

I wouldn’t buy cigarettes for people younger then 16 though, but if somebody came and asked me for one smoke and they looked 16+, I won’t ask their age to check if they really are. If they look like it, they can get one from me.

  • Nope.  Cigarettes are really the only thing I’ll put my foot down about.  I think they’re rank.  I fooled around for a bit with a guy that smoked, and kissing him was gross …

On top of that, I can get into trouble for it.  I can get into my own trouble, thanks kindly.

  • No, I’m a hard ass I probably wouldn’t

  • A friend of mine actually just had this happen…the kid asked and my friend said no. I would have said no too. Great question!

  • eh…
i smoke now, but im not sure if i would be willing to buy them for a friend.  it just depends on the person in my opinion.  If one of my friends, that smokes, asked me, i would probably buy them, but if a friend that doesn’t smoke asked me to buy him cigarettes or any other tobacco related product, i would turn him down.

  • well considering I’m 15…

but I don’t think I would even if I was over 18. Definitely not for a random stranger. Maybe for younger friends, but even then probably not.

  • Nope.

  • Nope. I def would not! :)

  • Nope – it’s illegal in Ontario to give a tobacco product to a minor (under 18)… but it’s not illegal for a minor to smoke a tobacco product… hmm…

  • I’ve had that happen. I just laughed at them.

    -Alexander the Zounderkite

  • No. I buy them for me, && if need be, I buy them for my friends. I would never buy them for a random kid that I’ve never met before.

  • I would buy the kid a pack of gum.

  • Nope, I’ve only bought cigs once for a co-worker who was of age.  He was so stressed that it was either I go buy cigs for him, or I go into work.  I wont be buying cigs again for anyone.

  • i’ve done it.

  • No.. no.. and just to make it clear… NO!

  • Yeah, sure. As long as it is their money that is paying for the cigarettes and the transaction goes down discretely.  What they want to do to their body is their business, not the government’s.  If they want to smoke, they should be allowed the freedom to do so.

  • I was that kid at 12 though I don‘t smoke now.  Yes I’d buy him a pack.  If it was good enough for me it’s good enough for someone else.

  • ok. obviously be conscious of age i mean if a fuckin 12 year old is coming up to you say no. Theres a difference between curruption and helping someone out. i really think its rediculious that someone wouldnt buy cigarettes for someone whose 17 and already have the addiction. Some people smoke, some people don’t. thats just the way it is. And when your one of the people that smoke and just need a cigarette and you get denied just because someone doesnt, it really fucking sucks. And anyways who are you to judge someone else’s personal health decisons!

  • Yeah, but it probably wouldn’t achieve much since I’m younger.

But if I were older, I would. They’d just find another person to buy them if I didn’t anyway.

  • Depends…What’s in it for me?

  • absolutely not.

  • There is no way in hell a 17 yr old would ask me that because I look too young.

  • No I wouldn’t. It is not like my denial will prompt them to quit at all. At least I know they aren’t getting any from me.

  • no, because im sure the next person he asked would give in and buy the cancer sticks anyways.

  • Not a bloody chance in hell. No doubt about it!

  • Nope, I hate smoking and all things pertaining to it

  • No, it is a terrible habit

  • Absoultely not!

  • Why would I spend money to break the law?

  • No, I wouldn’t do that. Especialliy, if it’s just a random stranger.

  • Fuck no. My Dad died from lung cancer when I was four. No fucking way am I going to help someone else get cancer. Two people that I know just died a few days ago, both from cancer. There needs to be a cure and fast.

  • Well,no for two reasons, one,it took me a while to stop smoking so I would not start somebody on something that as addictive a that. Two,it could be a trick and you could get arrested!

  • If i knew the person!

  • No.  It’s against my moral belief.  I dislike smokers and smoking in general so, I definitely would not be part of promoting smoking to teens.  The people I care about doesn’t smoke and if I find a friend who does I try to convince and support them to quit.

  • Yes because I always looked for people who would do it for me when I was under aged.

  • i dont think its a big deal. your 17 and next month or whatver you 18 and you’ll still eventually get to the cigarettes. sparing a day is nothing. that 17 year old will go find someone that will buy some, this is the type of situation where its win/loose - loose/win. either way the ‘kid’ or not yet 18 year old person will get to the cigarettes, if it makes you feel better not to be the purcshaser of them, great… but just do realize that the kid will go find someone that will. all the people saying no cuz of moral beliefs and shit, get over it. we all die. no one gets out alive.. go live life and buy the kids the dam cigarettes!

  • I hope you’re not endorsing underage smoking.

  • @huginn - hahaha very true.

Me, I would agree to buy him his precious smokes then pocket the cash. He needs to learn not to trust the general public with these matters.

  • My mom used to have me buy cigarettes for my brother when he was underage, but I hated it and wouldn’t have except for the fact that she kept bugging me and wouldn’t let me be. I felt terrible every time I did it and worried about getting caught buying for a minor, although he rarely accompanied me. I’d never do it again, let alone for a random teenage boy.

  • No.  It’s against the law.  Besides, that was the age I took up smoking.  If an adult wants to smoke, that’s his perogative.  Encouraging it in young people is wrong.
