  • How Xanga Nerfed Itself

I have wanted to write a follow up post to “Saving Xanga” and here is the post.  I want to mention once again that anything in this post is not designed to be critical of anyone on the xanga team.   Instead it is designed to give one person’s opinion on what xanga can do to save itself.

    Here we go:

I was talking to a member of the xanga team about two years ago about the old featured content system and how xanga would be moving away from that system.  Xanga would no longer be driving traffic to bloggers that had the highest traffic.  Instead xanga would be using the new system called “Boost.”  Boost would help identify better content on xanga.

At the time of that discussion on instant messenger, the xanga team member introduced me to a term called “nerfing.”  Nerfing is a way to bring about change on the internet.  The change takes place over time and therefore is less likely to be noticed.  It makes the change appear painless like catching a nerf football.

The xanga team member told me that xanga would be nerfing the old featured content system.  They would be driving less traffic to the link.  This would cause them to be able to do away with it and the people on the link would be less influential so it wouldn’t matter when they complained about xanga doing away with the system.

The member of the xanga team appeared pretty proud of the clever approach.  Xanga could nerf some of the most popular sites and no one would even know it.  At the time I was reading the message, I was thinking to myself, “What you are really doing is nerfing xanga.”

Why did I think xanga was nerfing itself?  Because by not feeding traffic to its most popular sites, xanga was killing part of the sources of its traffic.  Remember all the popular sites that used to be on featured content?  I know you don’t.  They died.  Those sites lost any support they had from xanga.

Let me give you an example.  Anyone remember Novelle361?

She was a professional writer.  She was pretty popular on xanga back in the day.  Does anyone remember when she left?  She left January 1, 2007.  This was a short time after xanga began to nerf featured content.

Now Novelle361 could probably give us reasons why she left xanga.  But I noticed that several of those sites dropped off shortly after xanga started to nerf featured content.

    Why?

Some sites had a certain amount of time to write.  They then had xanga sending them traffic.  Once xanga started to nerf itself, those sites saw a dramatic drop in traffic.  And several of them left quickly all at the same time.  It is only natural that you would go where the traffic is.  There was no reason for some of the sites to stay.  I don’t think most of those sites even realized they were being nerfed.  But once they got to a certain level, it was hard to continue if they began to decline.

I think if you went back and asked people like Novelle and so many others why they left, they would give you multiple reasons.  But the reality is that most of them saw a decline in traffic.

How does xanga nerf something?  Well, it is pretty simple.  Xanga has a lot of control over what gets traffic.  What is xanga’s priority right now?  Anyone?  Yes, datingish, revelife and momaroo and a few other test sites.  Xanga constantly puts those sites at the top of their front page.  They advertise them in other places too.

How did xanga nerf the old featured content?  They actually moved the links to the old featured content down the page a little.  I actually know this because I was told.  It was intentional.  Then boost was put on top of it.  And xanga then added the boost link to everyone’s private page.

Why would xanga drive traffic to datingish, revelife and momaroo?  Because those sites have ads on them that pay xanga.  Those ads can be a little more focused and can deliver more money.

But it is something bigger than that.  I want you to go look at all of the top blogs really quick and most of the other sites that xanga advertises.  What do you notice?  You will notice that most of them are premium.  Why is this a problem?  Because xanga doesn’t make any money off premium sites.  They do make money indirectly because those sites have other sites coming to them.  But the top blogs link is on a lower part of the front page for a reason.  Most of those sites are premium.

Xanga has painted itself into a corner.  That corner is called premium.  It is killing xanga.  What happens when a site gets popular on xanga?  The person gets premium.  Xanga stops making money off that site.  That is why xanga doesn’t really want to drive traffic to its most popular sites.

Lets take my site for example.  I added the google ads that xanga put on here.  How much money do those ads pay?  I get about $5 a day.  Now let me do a little math for you.  $5 a day at 365 days a year equals $1825.  Now multiply that times the last 4 years.  That is $7300.

I am one site.  Xanga can make $100 off free premium for life.  What do they lose?  $7300.

Now some of you will point out that my site is pretty big.  That is true.  But you take all of the premium sites together and they make my site look like a dwarf.  So any time a site gets large, the owner gets premium and xanga gets a little money.

    Does anyone see the problem?

Xanga has all of these sites now that have the potential to drive traffic and xanga is unable to make a profit from them.

So now xanga has an idea.  They go and make these targeted sites.  And those sites get ads.  Have any of you been approached by xanga so they can place your post on momaroo, revelife or datingish?  Why wouldn’t they just feature your site?  They were putting it on a site that could make more money.

Now making money is not evil.  I am simply disagreeing with the approach.  I think xanga would do far better to keep ads on its most popular sites and feed those instead.  Why?  Because the xanga team can only successfully manage one or two sites at a time.

There is another big problem.  Xanga offered credits.  More sites were able to purchase premium with those credits.  Do you see the problem there?  Yes, the problem is that more sites as they grow will simply buy the premium with credits.

Xanga is nerfing itself.  Instead of driving traffic in the way that feed bloggers, they have to drive traffic to these sides sites.  They have to go find your post and move them over to a profitable site.

Is this a winning strategy for xanga?  No.

Go to compete.com.  You will see that xanga continues to drop traffic at an alarming rate.  Remember when I pointed out earlier this year that xanga was mentioned as one of the fastest declining sites last year?  The decline is still in progress.

I am betting that xanga will drop in average views by a million a month by April of next year.  Anyone want to bet a 1000 mini on it?

Now we are at the stage where some will say, “If you don’t like it, leave xanga,” “What we need is a little more xangappreciation,”  “I am tired of all the posts that are critical of xanga.”

I hope once again that people realize the real problem if xanga declines at 40% a year for the next few years.  The xanga team as you know it will not exist.  This is hardly a post that is negative concerning the xanga team.  More than one person on the xanga team has expressed to me a “backup plan” if xanga continues to decline.  Instead, this is a wakeup call.

    Solution:

I think the best solution is for those of us who are premium users to allow advertisement space back on our sites that allows xanga the profit.  It will allow xanga to make money immediately.  But it will also allow xanga to start feeding traffic to bloggers and begin to grow again.

Would xanga ever ask you to do it?  No.  But I think the writing is on the wall.

Would you be willing to allow xanga to put ads back on your site even if you paid for premium?

    Recommend this post.

  • wow, am I really first… how funny.

  • Sure I would allow it, I need to put my ads back, I took them don because they were screwing up my weblog posting ability…

I don’t want to hear about xanga declining… that depresses me a lot… XANGA cut it out!

  • I miss Novelle361.

Xanga “back in the day” was certainly different than it is now…

    I don’t think I’ll renew my “premium” in february…

    *HUGS*
(I think I’ll have more time for xanga now…)

  • it’s the types of ads that get put on the  page that bothers me not that there are ads.

  • I see your point.

If Xanga goes under, I don’t know where we’re all going to go. We’re a community, not just a library of blogs.

Yeah. I’d let ads back on my site.

  • A post with content?  Wow.

  • I so could not read all of that.

  • yeah, if i could have my own ads, too (but I doubt I’ll ever pay for premium – wouldn’t be worth it)

  • im a prem member but i chose to put the adsense on. anything to help xanga grow and not die, im willing to do.

  • that would make sense, and i think people would be fine with it… i was thinking about this the other day, and i realized that with the major decline, eventually all these precious thoughts in the form of blog entries i value may no longer exist due to xanga shutting down. it’s depressing.

  • I’m not a premium member but I am willing to click on some ads from time to time.  Because what’s the point of bringing back the ads if no one clicks them?

  • dang, dan, you’re making me read!

  • I let ads on…Dont want xanga to die!

  • You know, I never really got why people got so crazy over Novelle, but then I like my blogs with a lot more bang.

I get my premium the old fashioned way; my fans pay for it!

  • @LyricallyCharged - Also, the way you’ve explained it, I can understand why they’ve made all these sites, but it’s just starting to get annoying.  Dollarish?  Lovelyish?  C’mon now.

  • you sound like an insider   i have noticed that xanga is declining somewhat.  there’s not too much on the front pages that is interesting to me.  but i assume the same could be said for what i write in my own for other people.

  • I am not premium so they must just love me. Though I am only a few more credits away from lifetime premium.

The truth be told, I have no problem with tasteful ads even if I had premium

  • I paid to not have ads on my site, so I don’t want them back.

  • I’d allow ads if I ever did get premium, but I’m not sure I see that happening

  • i only remember two other popular sites from way back in the day.. Ricebunny and some other Asian celebrity.

  • solution: have 2 xanga ads and 2 member ads on the same page???

  • I only got premium so I wouldn’t have ads. I guess I could cancel my premium next time ’round, but then my blog would be so ugly again.

  • Yes, I don’t mind ads. I’m banner blind.

  • I wouldnt mind xanga putting ads on my sites, then again, I was actualy thinking about getting the google adsense for my site. (even though i dont even bring in traffic as much as everyone else.)

  • Of course. :)

  • rec’d.

Dan, I agree 100% on this one, keep the ads or allow ads on premium; it’s the only way to keep xanga alive and capable of further development.

  • Exactly, why have premium then?

  • And of course I remember Novelle361!

  • The google ads that you’re talking about… Do they just pay you for allowing it to be on your site or does Xanga also make money off of these ads? If they don’t, they should at least reconfigure that deal out so that xanga makes at least half of the ad pay. Meh, anywho, if I was premium, I would definitely let the ads on my site. I don’t care if there are advertisements on my site or not, they’re on almost every other site on the www.

  • why would i want premium???????

  • I’m not a premium user but I think I’d allow ads. It would be nice if you could specify “no weightloss ads please!” though. It’s pretty ridiculous for eating disorder sufferers to have that on their sites.

  • Heh, that’s if I ever even HAD premium… I wouldn’t mind the adds in most cases… the ones that bother me are the ones that spam my log on my homepage.

  • They should allow you to decide where to put the adds, but
    recommended!

    SAVE XANGA!

  • Wow a big post! Thanks for the info mate. It was really informing

  • i bought life a long time ago and i use adsense too. Its a win win situation! oh and i remember novelle. Hopefully xanga will find a way to grow.

  • i think they should let users create sites like datingish, mamaroo and revelife, and do a profit sharing program. Also, they can charge for hosting and what not.

  • If they brought more traffic to my site somehow- without me doing anything- then I’d allow it. It would be an even trade.

  • I’d be perfectly fine with having ads on my site as long as I could decide where they would go. Even then, I’m a loyal Xangan and will do what I have to to keep the site up and running. XANGA FTW!!!!!!1

  • i always blogged for myself i suppose and whoever happened to stumble on. i never really tried to ‘sell’ my blog to others. i just liked knowing it was OUT there. in fact, i have my xanga bookmarked where it skips the main site completely and goes to my private site.

i only noticed the changes with revlife and datish when i was on another computer and went through the main site. i subscribed to them because it seemed like ‘organized’ thought where being ‘featured’ was determined by content rather than by popularity (traffic).

again, it’s funny. until a few recent subscriptions, i hadn’t realized that the xanga blogging community was a bit in a tangle with the feature issue. still, i’ve always found it hard to ‘search’ for good blogs, which is why datish and revlife seemed nice and convinent. however, the ‘reccomendation’ is also a great feature to find good blogs and i think that has been one of the best additions.

all thoughts from a super casual blogger.

  • @mooks_dayoo - Google AdSense only allows 3 modules on each web page, and then if you deliberately go click an ad on someone’s page you might not be clicking the Xanga ad and that doesn’t really do much.

But honestly, the only reason I got Premium (from a friend, anyway) is because the ads annoyed me.  I wouldn’t mind quite so much if they were smaller and I could move the module around instead of it being static, but otherwise that giant module just annoys me.  It takes up space, and I dislike wasted space.  I definitely think that should be an option, though – the ability to change where and how ads for Xanga are displayed.  I’d get rid of Premium if they had such an option.

  • if they lowered the cost for premium and added some “useful” items.  Also not full ads and we would have some say in the ads allowed on our individual site.

  • The solution is to abandon the ad-based revenue paradigm, not to bring ads back.

  • @HeartOfPandora - thanks for the 411. :D xanga is fuxor’d.

  • I’m sure this post was important. I didn’t read it, but I did skim through it. Some guy at work explained it all to me once. Just thought I’d be honest.

  • Hmm…damn, it all makes sense now.

  • now i feel bad for trying to earn the credits to pay for premium… i don’t want premium for life just to lose the credits, i just want the extra storage space and the “badge” that makes me feel more like a real xangan :)   they can advertise on my page all they want (especially if i am using credits to pay for premium).  I don’t know if they’d want to since my traffic is nothing like yours but it’s worth a shot!

  • idk why i get premium lol

  • Then why do they always send these notes saying”Won’t you go premium and help Xanga out” If Premium takes money away, what business would even offer it! I have to admit, I rarely even notice the adds, I guess I’m used to them. They don’t bother me at all. I hope they stick around. I enjoy meeting folks for all over weither they like me or not!

  • I have premium… and ads… but I haven’t gotten a penny from the ads (yet) … but I don’t have much traffic, either.

  • I bought Novelle 361 a wok for her wedding!  She was cool and so is her Hubster Jerry.

  • Very interesting stuff. People have asked then what the point of premium might be, though. Perhaps xanga could compromise, and share some percentage of the profit made off premium sites – that way they can help drive traffic, and both parties will benefit monetarily.

Also, that traffic site you linked is interesting. Try comparing xanga to google and wikipedia! Our poor little blogging network hasn’t much of a chance. Still, have you considered that a decline in traffic may simply signal a genuine decline in public interest in blogging? Perhaps despite tricks and traffic manipulation, people in general are simply less willing to put the effort into continued blogging.

  • I don’t have an answer. I kind of like the no ads. I bought premium for the… Why did I buy premium?

I think it was for the no ads. I used to by premium for the custom module box, but when they introduced themes I no longer needed the custom module, so I did not need premium anymore.

Do ricebunny, cakalusa, drakonskyr, do they get the same amount of comments as they used to get?

  • @NikBv - You might be right. I kind of lost my enthusiasm for xanga performance art. Life beckons so to speak

  • @UnworthyofHisgrace - For the same reason they introduced themes for free without considering that everything themes did for free premium charged to do. It may have been to push people away from buying premium to have custom HTML or javascript in their page, but too many ideas were implemented at once that conflicted with each other.

I have seen reactive management, when plans change often to counter what seems like a crisis, it does not bode well for the future of anything. Stay the course is a legitimate mindset, but careful planning is required. I speak from experience.

  • You know, Dan -once again, you make a lot of sense…

I, of course, do my part by not purchasing premium in the first place!
I have ads all over my blog!   Come take a look, folks!

  • @faerieshadow - google adsense does not think. Google adsense is the cold precision of math. And it works, sort of.

  • @benjimau5 - I don’t even have a theme. I don’t like them really. I just like basic colors, simple, like me!

  • I decided to pay premium so that it would be truly “my” site, and not some add executive’s tool. sounds like I’m paying to be screwed.

  • Hey… one point, though.

Xanga *wants* us to buy Premium. If someone doesn’t have it, they’re told every so often that they should “support” Xanga by going Premium.

So… if we buy Premium but still have ads, we are *seriously* running out of reasons to fork over $25.

You know? So what sort of benefits package should Premium be? Hm.

  • I just signed up to Xanga about two days ago. What this post makes me wonder is, how do I get the adds on my site that will make it boom like the others have? lol

  • I left a couple of years ago….

    Did ya miss me Dan??

  • Livejournal is tanking much faster than Xanga, so maybe it’s not so bad after all.

  • how much did xanga pay you to post this?

  • That was quite informative.  I don’t mind the ads even if I did pay premium. I’d rather get other type of premium service.

  • it really doesn’t matter to me because i have common sense and have ad blocking turned on.

  • there’s google adSence right? so if letting ads come back to a premium site with letting the user in on some of that profit, while xanga still gets money with a premium site displaying an ad, then wouldn’t that be a wonder with the world?

  • premium is a sharkjump

  • A little advertisment won’t hurt anyone, right?

Thanks for the invite, by the way :D

  • I payed for a life time so I wouldn’t have them.. then again i am one of thoes who plays where there page all the time

  • If I had premium, they could certainly keep ads on it. Since I don’t have premium , Xanga wins either way.

  • Uh, Novelle361 has an entry dated August 13, 2008. It’s frickin’ hilarious…

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What I have been saying all along!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Damnitt you eloquent bastard. I hope you are having a good night.

  • I have nothing to add except this man is absolutely correct.

  • wait, so why do people hate thetheologianscafe again? lol….

thanks for pointing all this out, as a casual user i wouldn’t have paid much attention to it.

  • no ads. sell merchandise. have a better product on the front page. sell domain name hosting for bigger sites. advertise on other sites and venues.
and not to be disagreeable, but traffic slipping this year could be to a lot of things, and most of the traffic lost was not from the united states, xanga lost mostly international traffic in the past year.
but i really like this post, and this is the second really good blog you’ve written in as many days.
and yes, i used to be on eatured till someone in mission control decided i wasn’t cool anymore. oh well, you can’t win ‘em all.

  • They could make the Featured Blogs and Top Blogs sponsored by certain advertisers. That would be a sellable package if I were looking to advertise here.  SO you go to Top Blog and you now have a place on your site that has a well placed ad showing the sponsor with linking ability. Anyway, It’s a great place to blog so I hope they figure it out. I have life premium so I guess I’m doomed to stay in the background if they don’t come up with a better plan.  Thanks for the information.

  • hmmm, food for thought…why bother with premium at all…….

Maybe I won’t bother with premium when it comes due next….

I am here to write and network, I don’t really care that much about the traffic, although I do enjoy the small network I have of people that I read and that read me….

    Seems fairly user friendly….

I hope Xanga sticks around, I really do. I have been here since 2002

  • awww man. this post makes me teary-eyed.

  • Well, this is most helpful food for thought. It makes for a sensible opening discussion, but is anybody listening?

  • yeah. i cant imagine xanga shutting down. so i’d let those ads back anytime. but maybe at the bottom of my page? heh.

  • You need to be the xanga economist. Seriously.
Xanga needs you on their team.

  • I’m glad that you took the time to sort it all out and explain it.  I know it is important to you.  It is important to me in the fact that I just want a place to be able to write what is in my head.  I got an added perk by suddenly having a new “neighborhood” of friends, WHO I might add, I have come to truly enjoy and regard as true friends.
I paid for a subscription in the beginning.  I did not mind doing that (figuring in the cost of a journal and several pencils ).
I have long-since figured that I was ‘out of the loop’ because I refuse to use the “new” page.
I have all of the other places on the internet, but this is my first choice for communicating.
If putting an ad on my humble little blog would make a difference, fine.  It will be one more change I have to get used to.
    Heavy sigh.

  • Great point!!!

  • If I had premium I would keep the ads. I need Xanga….for me it’s therapy, it’s a whole lot cheaper than paying $350 an hour to talk to a shrink! HAHAHAHA!!

  • I see your points, but there’s more of a solution that can be done then what you describe.

  • I am new here and I enjoy the feature posts but I also find it frustrating that I have a hard time finding “the little people”  I usually have to randomly click on peoples pictures of those who leave comments to broaden out further.  Maybe I’m just missing something, but doesn’t this site have a feature of most recent updates?  Something that updates every 4 hours or so?  We all have something to share, to say but I am finding its the same people over and over.

  • i do miss featured content – that was a driving force for my site back in 06

  • I stopped getting premium because they give you so much storage space without paying for it.  Yup.

I paid for premium when I needed space to store pictures.

  • Certainly not. I paid for premium to get rid of those hideous ads. I don’t want them back.

My site never had low traffic, and traffic has only increased since I’ve had premium…. I see no reason to make a change.

  • Lol. Next Presidential election – Tom from Myspace vs Dan from Xanga. Look at the sway they pull with large numbers!

  • There are many reasons users like Novelle361 stopped blogging.  Perhaps they got busy with life? For example her last post was: “Baby got back (from having a baby)”

  • @raiderjester - I can take Tom.

  • @XobronzebombshelloX - http://weblog.xanga.com/  This is exactly the same thing as featured content.  It is on the front page as well.

  • It’s funny that you wrote this just as I’m writing about the mini-sites myself and it’s nice to see some clarification on the whole issue of these sites. I suppose Xanga is in a rut. =/

  • xanga’s traffic may be going down – but I bet datingish and the like are going UP.

  • The content of the ads was the only thing I had problems with, plus I am friends only… If I could veto certain ads…

  • I’d go for it. (Even though I don’t have Premium but if I did..)
It’s only a little ad space and it helps out Xanga.
I’d rather stay here than move.

No need to fix anything that isn’t broken.
    = )
    Thanks, Dan, for sharing.

  • dan that brain of yours is hot too.

  • You know what is driving me away from xanga,  sites like momaroo, revelife and datingish. And  I really dislike the new TV like ad when I go to the log in page.

  • I don’t mind if they put ads on my site, as long as they’re not taking away from me.

  • I remember xanga seven years ago.  It was…quite different.  For a few years, anyone that was anyone had a xanga.

Now?  I think I might be one of three or four “friends” that still use their xanga.  Granted, I have two, and I’m obviously not talking about THIS xanga.  But…still.

  • Very good post.
Xanga should just make ‘Premium’ the norm (all features such as more than 3 profile pics, more storage space, minus the ad removal) and make it completely free.  This is the only social networking site that makes you pay for what should normally be free features.

  • No. If I am paying them to have them removed then I do not want them there.

  • lol all my comments were deleted. hahaha.

  • I would allow it. (On my main site of course, The44thHour) I want Xanga to stick around and am willing to have ads on my site. Its no big deal to have a few pictures of random things added to your site.

  • Novelle361′s new site on Blogspot never did as well as her site did here, I think she would have been better off had she stayed.

I would be willing to have ads on my premium as long as they were not all those boobie ads that I see.

  • I remember Novelle361. I thought she left because she had a baby and had less time to be here. I haven’t gone premium….how many credits does it take to get free premium anyway?

  • Gee, Dan. This is one of the few times that we get a glimpse into Dan the Man, what he thinks, what he’s passionate about. I like seeing this side of you. I wished we could have more posts like this.
Thanks for sharing the information. I’ve always been a proponent of “follow the money.” This is just another example. I’m surprised there aren’t Obama supports here saying “Xanga is an evil, greedy corporation!”

But I do have a question for you: what’s the point of paying for Premium if you can’t get rid of the ads? What benefit would there be to Premium?

  • good analysis.

I hate datingish, revelife and momaroo sites. They’re not even that good.

your proposed solutions are quite good too. Maybe premium users should have fewer ads on their page, otherwise they are no different than basic bloggers.

  • Even though I have lifetime I be happy to have a few ads on my site,  and would not want to make any money from it,  however as long I could pick with ones to have.

  • No.  I paid for premium to get rid of the ads.  I have both a blogger blog and a xanga blog, and granted they have different content and are geared towards different audiences, I find it very easy to use blogger and drive traffic to it compared to xanga.  Xanga needs to get their act together.  It isn’t the users causing xanga to decline, it is its management.

  • I didn’t renew…I don’t mind the ads…I don’t post as much, but it’s for personal reasons.  Thanks for the information.  I appreciate you and your work.  Have a mini.

  • I would allow ads only if they reflected the content of my blog.  If I talk about horror movies, for example, I think an ad that sees those key words and uses it to display Horror DVD releases coming out, that would be fine.  However, if they just were random ads about products that I don’t use or sites I don’t visit, I wouldn’t want them on there.

  • I have no problem with Xanga making money, since you guys allow me to post my thoughts.  Its supposed to be a win win situation.

  • I rarely get any traffic despite commenting on random blogs in a hopeful effort to get more people to at least see who this “mistress_onixx” person is who’s commenting but it doesn’t work. I wish I had half the traffic that you do.

  • here’s the thing: what’s the consumer’s incentive to save xanga? by xanga not investing in its cash cows (most popular sites) in a site-building sense, it has neutered any loyalty it could have generated. if old-school bloggers like myself feel that way, then kids who are just looking for webspace to claim as their own certainly do as well.

xanga’s dying, and coping is easier than bailing.

  • This was too long. And since it’s not a personal blog I am not at all guilty at having only skimmed a few words that stood out. Something about boost and saving xanga…

  • I might be one of the few who don’t want Xanga sending people to the same sites regularly.  I don’t like the way the were driving people to sites.  I very much prefer the old “recently updated” option where they would list the recent posts, not the people who considered themselves Xanga celebrities.  I really have no problem with the changes Xanga is making.

  • I think if Drak tried to write like you for two consecutive posts, he would suffer an horrific aneurysm.
