nope I’ve heard about this problem for awhile. I don’t have one though…it’s about the ear buds
What?!
Yes.
that’s the main reason I don’t listen to headsets.
the time I’ve worn them are FeW and FAR between.
No, I’m not concerned for myself because I always listen to music softly.
that is a pretty retro ipod there
Yup. My hearings got worse over the years since I started religiously listening to my ipod.
I enjoy it too much to fret.
Nah, I use chainsaws too much to hear the iPod anymore.
PS Dan go see my new post!!
@ccRowp - Amen. I’m a short-term kind of person, which is a flaw in many ways. But right now, I want my music. Rather selfishly. I pray I don’t have to pay for it later in life, because I really can’t help this dependency. Music is the very essence of my soul.
Yes, especially with all of the warnings the Zune came with.
But I was already born with hearing loss, so I figure, what’s a little more?
What iPod is that?!
I’ve come to terms with it.
No.
Personally? No. For many of the people around me? Yes.
Yeah, I’m a little worried about it. But not worried enough to stop listening to it. *shrugs* What happens, happens.
hahaha yes i am, actually. but i dont do a thing about it.
there’s always something
yup. but, what can i do if i love it xD?
I don’t use my iPod as frequently as other people I know. I use it sometimes at work and while I’m at the gym. No worries there, I suppose.
Not at all worried. I have great hearing so a loss would only bring me down to a normal level
I don’t listen to my ipod using headphones anymore. Now I have the ipod speakers. Don’t have to kill my ears with that anymore. =]
No. I usually listen to it while it’s docked. When I do use earbuds or headphones with it, I keep the volume pretty low and listen for only the length of a walk around The ‘Duh (about 10 minutes haha).
Yeah. But more often than not, I listen softly if it’s on earbuds.
Well, I have a Zune…but anyway, it’s not on that loud and if it’s on loud, it’s not that often. I was more worried when I was a music major. I used to sit in front of the percussion in band.
Nope. I try to be nice to my ears if I have to use headphones.
Quite a bit actually, I have a bad habit of blasting my music when I’m going for a jog
Not at all.
Yeah, a little, but my music addiction is too great. lol
not really because i dont listen to my mp3 player much right now
ha. yes, i am actually more than a little scared. whenever i listen to my ipod using earbuds (which isn’t really that often, actually), it’s usually on high volume. i love turning up the volume. i think this’ll get me later in life.
No, because I only listen to mine when I go to the gym .. so I’m not listening to it 24/7. I could get the same sort of damage blasting my stereo in my car.
Well, I rarely listen to my Zune except when I’m on a bus or walking around outside on campus, but then it’s only loud enough to semi-drown out what’s going on around me.
Nahh
nope, the study behind it is incredibly inconclusive and the whole idea is just a “what if” scenerio that’s not really based on anything.
sometimes, but i usually find that my volume is not turned on that high.
I’m listening to my iPod right now…. eep!
I don’t have an IPOD, don’t want one, lol, but they do say that cell phones cause cancer, especially in children. I DO worry about that!
WHAT?
@DrugInducedDuck - nope, the study behind it is incredibly inconclusive and the whole idea is just a “what if” scenerio that’s not really based on anything.
In fact, blasting loud music into the eardrums can actually help hearing.
a little but it doesn’t stop me from lsitening to my ipod. Too expensive not to use it.
Yep, which is a minor reason to why I don’t own an ipod or other musical device.
I suppose there can’t be much of a problem if you listen to it softly, but most people listen to it pretty loud. If I did have one, I would play it quietly.
@huginn - I’m not talking about playing music at high volumes, that’s obviously stupid, the study I’m talking about is concerning earphones in general.
not really; i only listen to music loudly if i’m angry. which…is not that often. so i’m hoping i’m pretty safe.
@mkenyon719 - I know how you feel about perc. I always have to stand right next to the snares when we’re in our warm-up arcs.
I normally listen to my music at the lowest volume possible, since my mom got me paranoid about going deaf; so no, no worries about losing hearing anytime soon.
Nope. I only ever listen to my iPod softly (practically on silent) and one of my earbuds is broken so it doesn’t really matter.
not really.
No. I listen to my mp3 player on very low volume with around-ear sound-cancelling headphones.
No, because I don’t use them.
It actually has more to do with the types of headphones you use. The little ear buds are probably not good for long-term hearing.
Nah, I don’t use one.
@DrugInducedDuck - I’m not talking about playing music at high volumes, that’s obviously stupid, the study I’m talking about is concerning earphones in general.
In fact, funneling noise right into the eardrums actually help hearing. They help little auditory cillia bounce back from the dead.
It’s no louder than my car radio on a sunny day….
I have excellent hearing and wouldn’ want to damage it. So, when I inally purchase an IPod, I will be buying some high quality headphones (NOT earbuds) and intend to be cautious abot the volume level, like I am now.
You make it sound like a conspiracy.
I don’t use my ipod very often at all, but I find that my car radio ends up rather loud when I’m on the interstate. I actually think my hearing has decreased from working in restaurant drive-throughs.
I used to worry about it, but not since my ipod broke lol.
No. It has affected my hearing… but I can’t say I really care…
yeah, but i rarely use my ear buds.
it is the volume level of the music that damages hearing, not ipods themselves. as long as there are those nuts driving around town with the bass blasting so loud that my ears buzz when they pull up next to me, there will be hearing losses…
i have a walkman and it does me fine. i wonder about an ipod. however i like cds and dvds and bluerays instead……..
maybe i will buy myself one on the next paycheck…….just to see if they are worth the it……..
Negative.
I already have some hearing loss so I don’t use headphones.
i’m content with my ears constantly ringing.
yes
Not until people force it in my face like that. Lol. xD
Eh, those are the boring years. The years when you’re old.
yes and that’s why I don’t like listening to anything that’s turned on loudly.
Lucky for me, I’m already hearing impaired, so it doesn’t matter to me!
No, not really. I don’t use headphones that often. It’s the loud concerts that will do it.
Nah, not at all. I need my music.
My hearing is bad already, why not make it worse?
I don’t need the iPod. Pretty anything with headphones/earphones contributes to my hearing loss =/
I hafta use headphones because earbuds do not fit in my ears and stay comfortably. Maybe my ears are deformed, but I don’t worry because of this reason.
yes. the earbuds send sound waves straight to your eardrum. i stopped blasting my ipod because i’m too afraid of losing my hearing.
yes…sometimes. lol
very much so! but i don’t listen to anything very loud. although i will add that i’m already becoming hard of hearing, and i’m only 16. =/
yes. i always play at less than audible.
Nope, I’m sure working stage security at the Styx Paradise Theater Tour concert took care of that nearly thirty years ago.
I don’t have an MP3 player, just headphones.
As for my hearing… well, I’m tired of playing it completely 100% safe all the time.
i learned in my Audiology class that if you have the volume above 50%, that is when hearing loss begins. so, if you listen to your ipod below 50% of the max volume you should be fine. but, don’t quote me on that.
Yes, that’s why I won’t turn the volume too large.
yepp I am quite concerned
no because i don’t have one.
ZING.
No, I’m not concerned about losing my hearing by listening to my iPod, because I know how to turn the volume down, and I do. A lot of my co-workers don’t seem to know how, or don’t care to turn the volume down, because I can typically hear their iPods over mine when they walk by.
YEAH. i actually stopped listening to ipods with my headphones because of my fear of hearing loss
I am sure that any type of electronic device ( phone, ipod, cd player….etc.) used in excess or played too loud for a long period of time can do some damage to the hearing. I am not a Dr. but it would only make sense. Using audio devices in moderation and at reasonable levels can help prevent permanent hearing damage….at least that is my opinion. It only makes sense to be reasonable when using electronic devices.
you win this game. the first decent blog that i’ve seen on the private page, ever. good job.
also, your first question i’ve seen worth asking.
that`s also the reason why i try to use speakerphone whenever i`m alone. i put my headphones on my temples, not directly on my ears.
Only if you blast up to the volume where others can hear what you’re listening to.
I’m sure they could, but I try to avoid turning the volume too loud and sometimes opt to wear ear plugs at concerts if I’m really close to the front. So I take my precautions to a degree.
sometimes, but then I put it out of mind and it doesn’t bother me anymore.
i don’t have an ipod, but i do have to wear a headset at work sometimes and that fucks with my hearing plenty. i have to ask people to repeat things three or four times sometimes. there is no need for diesel trucks and yelling into drive through speakers, people.
i don’t care.. sometimes in the future my hearing will go out due to old age.
I love music, but don’t have ipod.
i usually keep the volume on my zune just low enough that i could hear someone call my name. but i do know people who turn their volume up so loud that other people can hear it from across the room and what the hell’s up with that. you might as well just use external speakers and bug the crap out of everyone.
Yeah, but it doesn’t stop me from using it still.
No since I dont use a I-pod or any other music device which I have to headphones in my ear.
Eh? Can’t hear ya sonny, gonna hafta speak up! lol
Not really because 1) I do not use mine every day, and 2) I do not turn the volume up very loudly. Same with the audio system in my car – I really dislike turning the volume up loudly because I am afraid of getting hearing loss.
I’ve never used an ipod. Shocking, I know.
I prefer speakers…….I imagine I sound rather like a cow moo-ing when I sing along with earbuds on:P
Are you at least a little concerned that things like oxygen are going to damage your brain?
There are any number of things in the world which can damage us in innumerable ways. iPods don’t cause hearing loss, people turning iPods up all the way and shoving them down their ear canals cause hearing loss. Well, that and horrific pop music is enough to do it anyway.
didn’t they say the same shit about walkmen?
yes, that’s why i switched to headphones that could cut out more external noise so that i wouldn’t have to turn the volume too high to listen to music on the streets.
Yes.
I can’t wait to be an old deaf man.
I heard that they only cause damage if you turn them up too loud, and I usually keep mine pretty low so I can hear what’s going on around me.
I don’t have an iPod and rarely use headphones (unless I’m out running…which is rare)
Yeah. I have awesome Bose headphones and blast em. It’s addicting. -David
It only damages your hearing if your irresponsible with the volume or your use of it.
Probably….but yet I don’t think I will do anything about it in the future.
i’m not so worried for myself, b/c i can hear just fine with less than 1/4 of the volume…
it just bothers me when i can hear all the notes coming from another person’s earbuds… from six rows in front of me.
Some, but not as much as the percussion section I sit in front of during football games.
I worry about it with my daughter but for myself,no I don’t listen to mine very much anymore.I think I am going to talk to my daughter about it tonight….:)
Hahah, Apple sux.
Yes, I am concerned. That’s why I’m the only one of my friends to listen to my iPod at 40%.
I can’t stand it when it’s any percentage louder.
You sound like my mother :
If you listen at half volume you can go forever, but the higher you go the less time it takes for hearing loss. Don’t hate the earbuds. just respect your eardrums.
No way.
Kinda, that’s why I don’t use it much.
No, not really. I figure by the time I have any measurable hearing loss they’ll have come up with some new therapy or implant that’ll fix it.
Yes. People would care more if the effects were more immediate, but they’re not, in this immediate world.
Yeah I guess. But it doesn’t matter as long as I get my music in.
what? sorry could u repeat that i didn’t hear you!
Comments (125)
Yes, actually more than a little.
