The Oprah Effect
Oprah endorsed Barack Obama at a time in the primary when he really needed it. She appeared in public with him and drew crowds for him before he was drawing crowds on his own.
I am not sure that Obama would have beat Hillary without the help of Oprah. Some have discussed whether Oprah hurt herself by throwing her weight behind Obama.
I actually think Oprah asserted herself as a power player and has emerged from this situation a more powerful influence.
I have always appreciated Oprah’s approach in that Oprah uses her influence to lift up other African Americans. She will highlight authors and assist people in succeeding. Contrast this approach with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson who basically push African Americans down and tell them they need them to protect them.
Do you think Oprah was hurt by her support for Obama?

I wish, someone should take that cow down a few pegs.
who cares; she is a bitch………
She does know how to use her powerful influence…I don’t think she was hurt by it. People love and respect her opinion. Those who don’t – just don’t watch her show or take her to court. Either way she’s still rock solid. Right now its seems as though you better get on the Obama boat…because its leaving with or without you…
Oprah scares me.
Oprah is constantly considered one of the most powerful women in the world. Just look at the Forbes list that comes out every year! I don’t think she’d be hurt at all!
Nah, she has the same cult following as Obama.
Oprah has too much money and clout to be hurt by anyone.
@Allen_Oz - me too
No, I don’t think so.
Her ratings initially took a dip.
But now that it’s Barackmania in the states, they’ve probably recovered.
Oprah is TEH SCARY.
nope.
No way.
I don’t think she just support African Americans, but I know plenty of people (mostly women) who will blindly just agree with Oprah on anything she says which is kind of disturbing to me.
no. and who really cares?
ive heard the name,,, thats about it,,,, somebody said she lost some weight,,, or something,,,
No.
Back when Obama first appeared on her show for his book she was totally enraptured by him. I believe that was her dream to see him as president and she had the time, money and energy to help make it come true.
I think that regardless of whether she was hurt by it or not, she won’t care in this particular situation.
Oprah would have to do a lot to hurt herself this far in the game. She is pretty powerful with pretty loyal supporters.
She comes out smelling like a rose. And you’re so right about the dis-empowerment practiced by the J&S boys.
I may not always agree with Oprah or her politics and I can’t usually stand to watch her show (I don’t like mushy girly stuff), but I have mad respect for that woman. If you don’t know her history and where she came from in comparison to where she is now, look it up. I totally appreciate and am elated to see a woman come from circumstances that should have crippled her entire life and being ‘make it’. Instead, she refused – REFUSED – to be a victim and paved a way for herself. I don’t handle victim mentality very well and she totally embodies taking the responsibility for your own life into your own hands. I don’t think she’ll be hurt by it. Her base of supporters tend to look beyond politics.
I don’t think Oprah hurt herself by supporting Obama, but she basically sealed his win——everybody likes something about Oprah or just entirely loves her.
It’s Oprah! The woman is going to stand up for what she believes.
You know, there are a lot of people in the world who already don’t like Oprah for a lot of reasons. Some don’t like her because she’s black. Some don’t like her because she’s successful. Some don’t like her because she’s not afraid to speak her mind. There will always be ignorant people in the world. But was her reputation damaged by her support of President-Elect Barack Obama? Seriously? No, if anything it’s elevated her to a new level not just with the black community, but with the American people. She has always been a bastian for positive change, whether changing her own life, an audience member’s life, or a special guest. This was an incredible opportunity for her to help someone and really make a difference. If helping people damages your reputation, what kind of a world is it that we are living in today anyway?
I’m so tired of the media creating people. I sure as heck hope Obama has as much inside to be a leader as the media and Hollywood think he does.
I don’t think Oprah was hurt in the least. I think her endorsement, along with the “neutral media” endorsement of Obama was the key to his success. I don’t think he would have succeeded at all had he run on his own merit.
Oprah uses her money and power to help others, not just black people, all kinds of people. When she believes in something, she supports it. I think she is an amazing woman…but i don’t really like her show.
Nope, I say more power to her.
I don’t think Oprah was hurt by her support of President-Elect Barack Obama. Although I don’t watch her show much (I’ve only seen a few episodes), I think that she’s made a career out of expressing her opinions and getting involved. In a way, it’s kind of what people expect her to do.
– Jedi Master 713
I don’t think so. But even if it did, it wouldn’t leave a dent. For Pete’s sake, it is Oprah.
I stopped watching her show when she didn’t invite a republican candidate on her show after Obama was on. All in the name of politics. I lost all respect for her and will never watch her show or read her magazine again.
I doubt it!
Some people will stop watching her because they’ve finally caught on that she is a racist.
But for every one person who stops watching her for that reason, ten more will START, because they’re racist.
So from that standpoint, no, not at all.
personally, i could care less about oprah !
maybe oprah is the anti-christ??!
Well…a lot of people follow whatever Oprah says.
I think Oprah did a great job in helping Obama, and I think they both came out better for it. I’m glad he has her to help, and I’m glad that Oprah is able to help her fellow man and people who are the same race as her.
I hate Oprah with a passion. I just see her as the epitome of “fake.”
Don’t care if she as hurt or not. But in all likelihood she wasn’t. She’s too big too be hurt by an endorsement she makesor does not make.
Oprah’s frightening. I bet you anything that she runs for President next election. That is NOT cool.
imagine if he picked oprah to be his running mate LOL
i don’t think she was hurt
Nothing can really ever hurt Oprah. She’s got a track record better than most world leaders. She is a force of positive energy whose mission is to make this world a better place, and she puts her money where her mouth is. You can’t ask for much more than that. She makes me want to be a better person. You can’t say that about many other people, can you?
I LOVE OPRAH!
I don’t think it hurt her in the least.
everything she touches turns to gold!
@TH1SL1F3 - You say you lost respect for Oprah when she didn’t have a Republican candidate on her show and you haven’t watched her show since. But do you realize that, in fact, Oprah had Obama on her show before he was a presidential candidate? She had him on the show shortly after he gave the speech at the DNC convention in 2004, I think. On that show (I remember watching it) she asked him if he would ever considering running for president. He was non-committal. She encouraged him because she really believed in him. But after that, he never appeared on the show again, nor have any political candidates. She just doesn’t have candidates on the show. When Obama was on the show, he was just a state senator at the time, not running for anything. In fact, I think he might have been there to promote a book. Maybe. I’m not sure. So you can’t say you’re angry at Oprah for not inviting a Republican candidate on her show because the truth is she never invited a Democratic candidate on her show either. Do you see what I’m saying?
@la_faerie_joyeuse - In what way is Oprah a racist? One of her best friends is Julia Roberts. I think you have to back up that statement and not just accuse her of something so harsh.
@MorningAngel - Maybe she’s the anti-Christ, you suggest? You’re kidding, right? As I said in my previous comment, Oprah’s got a track record better than most
world leaders. She is a force of positive energy whose mission is to
make this world a better place, and she puts her money where her mouth
is. You can’t ask for much more than that. She makes me want to be a
better person. She has that effects on millions of people. She raises money for charities like you wouldn’t believe. She is a top-notch do-gooder. You can’t say that about many other people. So how can you say she’s the anti-Christ? Won’t you please retract that statement? Surely you made that comment in haste without thinking it through.
@AilinCorazon - You see her as the epitome of “fake”? In what way? Please read what I wrote to MorningAngel just before this comment.
@FallenReign - Oprah’s frightening? In what way? I’m curious about what you think and what your perceptions are. But look, don’t worry. She has always said she will never seek political office. She can do so much more good in the way she does now as a semi-private citizen than she could as a politician. Bill Clinton has confirmed that, saying that the private organization he has established has been able to help solve world issues better and faster than he was able to when he held the office of president — because of all of the red tape the president and Congress have to go through. A private citizen (or a group of private citizens) can raise money and get stuff done lickety-split. For instance, Brad Pitt has personally financed and helped build more houses to replace the ruined ones in New Orleans than the government has since Katrina hit.
Oprah is awesome. She will get more and more supporters.
Don’t know, don’t care.
Who cares? Many celebrities throw their support behind the candidate they prefer.
Nope.
I don’t think she was hurt by it at all. I’m sure it helped her in some ways.
It’ll take a big insane unbelievable ‘anti-Oprah’ controversy to bring her down. ha ha. I don’t see it happening for a loooong time.
the Oprah lovers crack me up…
@UFFda_oyVEY - wow… all the time that it took you to post those comments probably took up the one hour Oprah show. glad I have better things to do with myself.
@TH1SL1F3 - That’s the best you could come up with? You can’t defend your argument? That’s sad.
BTW, I’m a really fast typist and it didn’t take but a few minutes to write all that I wrote. I guess I’m one of those damned elitists who’s pretty good at everything she does.
See, boys and girls out there, this is what I’m talking about. When a right-winger can’t defend an argument with an ounce of intelligence, he or she stoops to namecalling/mudslinging/what-have-you. Sooooo typical. And you know what? We Americans are sooooo tired of it. That’s why Obama will be the next president.
I don’t mind Oprah but I could probably like her more if she wasn’t so wrapped up in constant self examination and self help psycho-babble.But to answer your question I really don’t think she was.She is an institution all to herself.
Dan, why do you attract the psychos that always have to be right?
Nah, not so much
Haha, you can’t hurt Oprah. She will crush you
i doubt it really hurt her… but it has changed my respect for her… actually, my respect for her has been going downhill for a few years… this just shot it down a cliff.
@UFFda_oyVEY - um. I was making a joke. relax
Definitely. Did you even SEE her at Election night? Nope. Thats cause she got such crap-assed seats. Maybe Obama started spreading her wealth around already, so she couldn’t even afford a decent seat. And Jon Stewart said that one first…lol
No.
@MorningAngel - I think she needs a CHILL PILL!
@AilinCorazon - I couldn’t agree more!
No she wasn’t hurt, she’s just as amazing as she always was.
No one be bringin’ oprah down.
@UFFda_oyVEY - One can have best friends of a particular race, and still be racist.
By my definition, pro-black activism is racist. From what I understand, Oprah has done her share of support for “the black community” during her career. This in itself is not specifically wrong, but explicitly stating that she wants to help black people, or advance their common cause? That, to me, is a classification of individuals based on inborn traits over which they had no control, and it’s wrong. There are poor people of EVERY race who need help, and to ever focus your attention on any particular one (or even if you do it all in turn, but explicitly say “I’m helping white people!”) I view that as racist.
@UFFda_oyVEY - I’m not a right winger at all. I just don’t like Oprah. Period end of story. Why do I think she’s fake? Because I can feel it. It’s a vibe I get from her. That’s all.
I don’t need to attack you to prove my point. You need to step off your high horse and realize some people just don’t get the same vibes that you do. You’re no better than I am because I don’t like her.
Remember it’s only human nature to have preconceived notions about people. Just because I have them for a person that’s you feel is a great person does not make me any less of a human than you.
Because I can guarantee you have them as well, just not on a such public figure known for her humanitarian work.
I hate Oprah with a passion and always have. I feel she’s fake. Nothing you say or do will change my mind. It’s the vibe I’ve gotten from her ever since I first laid eyes on her, saw one of her programs, or whenever I see her on TV.
I’m glad she does all this humanitarian stuff. That’s admirable. But still I just don’t like the vibes I get from her
I HAVE HAD NO RESPECT FOR HER SINCE SHE SAID SHE WOULD NOT USE HER SHOW AS A PLATFORM FOR THE ELECTION YET PUT OBAMA ON HER SHOW AND TALKED TO HIM, BUT REFUSED TO ALLOW SARAH PALIN ON HER SHOW UNTIL AFTER THE ELECTION! ENUFF SAID, LOL,
CHERYL
I hope so. I can’t stand her.
Not at all.
Not at all.
lol yeah she’s kinda scarry xD
Not at all.
Xo
@TH1SL1F3 - AMAZING, I POSTED ALMOST THE EXACT SENTIMENTS…GREAT MINDS THINK ALIKE, WOOHOO,
CHERYL
Not really, I mean – she’s Oprah!
No, Oprah is just full of herself. Thats all.
no
god oprah is like a god to middle aged women
hey i dont think oprah was hurt i watch her show sometimes she’s just talking like it is
Obama won…that should tell you something
no. I think it helped her popularity.
No and I do not think she is the main reason why Obama beat Hillary.
Hey, Dan, why do you allow idiots who can’t back up their accusations and arguments on here and then feel so insecure about themselves that they start blocking your readers from their blogs? They’re scaaary. Maybe they should move to another country or something because THIS IS BARACK OBAMA COUNTRY NOW, BABY.

Of course not! Oprah is awesome!!
How would putting her support behind the winning candidate hurt her?
I don’t think she is hurt. But I do think that she was taking advantage of her fans to push her views.
Is Oprah ever hurt by anything?
No, I’d never even before heard the theory that she’d been hurt by her endorsement of Obama.
However, i would like to add that I’m glad she slid out of the way when the primaries ended and Barack Obama needed to show America he could stand alone. We don’t want people saying somebody got into the White House because a TV personality put them there.
…For the next election, I bet any and all serious candidates are going to be scrambling to secure TV-personality endorsements. Palin might want Sean Hannity’s nod.
Oprah is almost untouchable, nothing ever seems to hurt her.
@FunnymanGeorge - AMEN!
@M_S_T_A - I agree.
~1~
Good entry. I don’t believe supporting Obama has hurt Oprah, she will always be a media super-power.
~1~
Oprah was not hurt in this whatsoever. Probably boosted her image for some in anything.
nah. She was hurt when she didn’t give me a new car.
I can’t stand Oprah
@UFFda_oyVEY - You’ve got a long way to go to be a better person. It’s a good thing you have Oprah on your side … if only to do the heavy lifting.
Oh ye of little faith! God put him in office is you are Christian read romans 13…If you aren’t Christian it was fate…. so get over Oprah, She is a good woman and has done so much for children in Different parts of the world.
NO! Now what do you think?
I don’t think she was hurt very much, but I do remember hearing that some of her viewers were disappointed when she backed Obama because they felt like she should have gotten behind Hilary.
Oprah’s humble beginnings in the media was as a reporter for the news. She moved up with her Chicago talk show to a media empire based on the opinions of housewives and women over 30.
Oprah survived a flap with the beef industry, a short spat with rapper, Ludicris on why she would not let most rappers on her show, taxes on cars given away to audience members, and her reputation as an authority on books by supporting an author’s memiors that contained false anecdotes. This Obama thing is nothing. (although if he goes back on his campaign promises, will she have hime back on ala “million little pieces”?)
Did you know she dated Roger Ebert a while back?
whenever you pick the winning team, you usually come out stronger.
When the black caucus pretty much rejected Obama, b/c …who knows… i’ve heard some weird things like “he’s not a true black man, b/c he wasn’t born from a slave”, etc… b/c he’s half white and the black part is an recent immigrant from Kenya… Oprah supported him. I disagreed with it, at the time, but kudos to her for doing it.
He’s already accomplished something great and inspired hope into so many, that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, couldn’t. It’s also great that he’s not a grievance black politician. I think that helps a lot.
Now let’s see what he’ll do with his term in Office. I hope people just give him a fair chance to show what he can do, instead of jumping on him the first moment he slips up or does something they disagree with.
This is for the Dems as much as the Reps. Give the guy a chance to change you too! haha.
and no, i didn’t vote for him.
But now that he’s in, let’s give the guy a chance to make the best of his office.
I don’t pay attention to Oprah. I can’t speak for others, but I see her as no more or no less better off for having supported Obama.
Thank you for the needed commentary on Jesse and Sharpton.
I have a special place in my industrial sized trash compactor for those two plants:
Any damn where I throw them in.
No,I wasn’t surprised that she backed him up cause she supports her own race in everything, which is fine, makes sense.I quit being a fan of her for awhile now, cause she got on this new age religion book and was trying to get everyone to believe like her.She also said some things about my God that I serve and well,I have lost interest in her.I don’t hate on her though cause I applaud to her that she has made herself so successful.
By supporting a winner? No way.
@UFFda_oyVEY - You don’t like it very much when people don’t agree with your views, or idolize your chosen idols, do you, honey? All I had to do was mention that I was proud that I voted for Ralph Nader in ’00 to enrage you enough that you tried to take revenge on my blog by poorly reviewing on it Blogged.com. I see now that your ‘Obamamania’ is a direct result of your ‘Oprahmania’. Might it also be that you have a few more ‘manias’ that are more clinical in nature? Your comments here, and on my blog, would suggest that you do.
I don’t think that the only reason Obama won was because of Oprah because Obama had been making a name for himself way before Oprah basically endorsed him. He’s a capable enough man without having to rely on Oprah supporting him.
I don’t see how Oprah supporting Obama has hurt her. I don’t see the issue.
No
yeah… that was mean… esp when she refused to interview palin cuz she didn’t want to endorse her.
