  • Kelloggs and Michael Phelps

Kelloggs cereal maker has dropped Michael Phelps from their ad campaign because he was caught taking a hit from a bong.

The company released a statement saying, “his image was not consistent with the breakfast cereal.”  Here is the link:  Link

Michael Phelps is a world class athlete.  He won all kinds of medals and is a picture of health.  But he smoked a bong during the off season and he now is not consistent with Kelloggs and their breakfast cereal.

Kelloggs is the maker of Coco Pops.  The cereal is 39% sugar and has chocolate in it.  Here is the link:  Link

They have no problem making children fat and loaded down in sugar but Michael Phelps just got caught smoking a bong.  Good thing Michael Phelps didn’t get caught eating their cereal.

What do you think is more harmful to a child, a few hits from a bong or a daily dose of Coco Pops?

  • haaaaaaa, was this supposed to make me laugh?

  • Definitely a daily dose of CoCo Pops

  • sugar isn’t an illegal drug.   as for sugar in cereal….. adults eat that crapola also.

  • Maybe he’ll get some sponsorship from High Times.

  • @wherethefishlives - Hehe.  Best thing I’ve read all day.  <33

  • Coco Pops. Regular marijuana usage actually cuts your risk of cancer by ten percent. Obesity raises your risk of heart disease greatly.

  • Serious though, what is he supposed to expect?  If you’re going to do something dumb, you need to be smart enough not to get caught.  <33

  • Haha…Dan.  Really?

  • The cereal! Absolutely!

    Pass the bong, Mike!

  • The bong hits. Because you get the munchies and where does that leave you? With Coco Pops

  • @MrsMok - ding ding… we have the winner!

and would Phelps be the first Olympian in High Times if they somehow manage to finagle an interview with him?

  • the cereal obviously.

  • I eat Coco pops every morning and I’m high all day.

  • when it comes to brand and product image, things like illegal drug use, no matter how infrequent, become a really big deal. every company has their ideas of how they want customers and prospective customers to think of them. the company i represent has very little in the way of restrictions in
the contract you sign to be a part of it except for “image issues.” the fastest way to get your agreement revoked is to violate the code for brand representation. my sister works for the kellogg foundation and they are very conscious of the image thing. i am pretty sure he will be lucky if he gets off with just being dumped…

  • Both, really.  But I’m not surprised.  Companies will be worried about how moms are going to react having Phelps as a spokesperson.  That’s one of those prices he’ll have to pay for doing something stupid, fair or not.

  • Kellogg’s is in the business of selling cereal, not making moral decisions on behalf of society. Even if inhaling a bit of marijuana smoke is less dangerous than consuming one of their cereals over a lifetime, being associated with Phelps right now hurts their bottom line more than selling Coco Pops. So Kellogg’s does what it has to do. It may not be right, but it is what it is.

  • actually, they’re right. He’s NOT the right image for their breakfast cereal.

    he’s healthy.

  • lol That’s a good question!

  • The Bong with coco pops

  • cocoa pops are worse

  • real stoners eat fruity pebbles *giggles* or atleast in my circle that was the cereal of choice.. i’m not a fan of coco pops, they suck.. i don’t see what the big deal is, many peeps have taken a hit from a bong, myself included, we turned out fine..

  • Maybe a few hits from a bong, because cereal has essential vitamins along with sugar

  • The cereal is less harmful hands down. They’ll probably burn it off running around.

  • i totally understand why kellogg did this, but by far cocoa puffs everyday are worse for you.

  • Ok, I JUST now noticed that Phelps kinda actually looks like the coco pops monkey. Especially with that hat on.

    I’m just saying.

This post actually reminds me of the old John Belushi SNL sketch… the mock commercial where he’s playing an olympic athlete who is the spokesman for “Little Chocolate Donuts.”  He’s standing there eating the donuts and smoking, but we all know how he eventually died.

    What’s worse indeed.

  • Our worship of athletes, musicians, and actors disgusts me far more than the Kellogg’s decision.  Something is seriously wrong with our society when we care what a bloody athlete does in his spare time.

  • @sarahb_86 - I agree, but then again I love me some coco pops! So the bong I guess.

  • The Coco Pops obviously, though pot can give you the munchies so if they were smart they would use Michael Phelps as a newer and better campaign ad “Free ‘Michael Phelps’ pipe in every box! Must submit 5 proofs of purchase for nug”

That way not only would they be selling even more cereal but getting children and grown men and women fat and quite possibly making the world a more peaceful, though a little hazey, place.

  • Coco Pops doesn’t make kids fat, an inactive lifestyle does.

The Mary Jane is illegal, like it or not, and Phelps, a paid endorser of a product was caught doing it. It sets a bad example for kids who want to be like Phelps and are easily impressionable. I’m not saying all kids are going to pick up a bong because Phelps did it, I still have some faith in peoples ability to make rational decisions not based on something they say on TV, but it does project an image that the company does not want to be associated with.

For the famous, it takes a lifetime to build a reputation and one bad mistake to ruin it. I’m confident Phelps will bounce back, he is a tremendous athlete after all, but it will take a while and he will lose some sponsors.

  • Kellog’s should have used the oppportunity to include a free toy bong with every box of Coco Pops.

  • Coco Pops is stoner food. They would’ve gained a lot more customers if they had him on the cover. Especially if the picture was him smoking the bong.

  • What the hell are Coco Pops?  Those are Cocoa Krispies damnit!

  • I don’t think it matters seeing as how a bong hit would likely cause one to eat Coco Puffs anyway.

  • And by the way, Phelps is by no means a role model for how to live your life.  If kids want to look up to him, it is for his determination and work ethic, not his lifestyle.

  • Kelloggs sugary cereals may not be healthy, but taking illegal drugs, no matter how “harmless” it may be, is unacceptable for someone who is supposed to be their role model. In this case it was worse for Phelps to take the drugs than to eat the cereal.

  • Barring the legality issue, I believe a daily dose of Coco Pops is more harmful than taking a hit from a bong. :p

Pot can actually have some truly medicinal/soothing effects on its users. There is really almost nothing good about sugary breakfast cereals (I’ve boycotted them almost entirely for all of my teenage and adult life. Give me an apple or a banana for breakfast instead, with a large cup of coffee.)

In excess, all things are bad, however.

  • Athletes as being role models…”Hey mom, when I grow up I want to be a famous athlete so I can sleep with many hot bitches and go to clubs and shoot someone or myself and do all sorts of bad drugs!”

  • The difference is that the bong is illegal and the cereal is not. Anyway, he may have a somewhat perfect body, but that never made him healthy. He eats a ton of crap everyday and even though he works off the calories, it’s still unhealthy.

  • I’ve never heard of Coco Pops… O.o

  • I think a few hits off a bong and THEN eating some Kellogs cereal are a great combo.. they should have kept him.. I bet they would have had a major increase in sales..

  • How about comparing daily cereal consumption with regular marijuana use.

Marijuana has the reputation of giving people the munchies.  For some people that could lead to more than consuming a bowl of cereal.

    I avoid both.

  • Maybe people will realize just how ridiculous it is that marijuanna is illegal.

  • Ha! I’ve never thought of it like that!

  • If what you’re trying to say is that children should smoke out of a bong… I like where your head’s at!

  • this frumma company that used to ad massive dosiz of saltpeter to itz kornflakes to keep boyz down in the masterbayshun departmint

    no lie

  • hmmm…i’m gonna say….both

  • HA! Oh Dan you crack me up

  • Hmm, limited substance abuse compared to continual substance abuse. I’d say that the continual substance abuse would be more harmful.

The real question though is why Kellogs doesn’t want to use this situation to their advantage. This is the perfect chance for them to try to appeal to an “edgier” market. Come on Kellogs, put the bong photo on the Wheaties boxes, and keep the cartoon animals on the sugary cereals. You have to capture that youth market somehow.

  • cereal doesn’t make people fat.

  • Sugar & junk laden foods are definitely worse. Either way, his image was tarnished.

  • Coco pops worse. Smoking up once in awhile ain’t bad for the mind at all.

  • This country is backwards like that. In any country in Europe, a picture of a world-class athlete taking a bong hit would probably be considered an AD CAMPAIGN for breakfast cereal, lol. But here, he’s being dropped off the face of the planet because of this truly insignificant thing. I feel so sorry for that guy.
I’d rather my kids smoke pot than eat a bunch of sugary, fatty crap everyday, for sure. Besides, sugar’s more addictive than marijuana. Don’t look at me like that, it’s true!!!

  • I hate the media. He’s like 23 years old, he’s not a saint. He can swim, but he still parties. If he wants to take a hit from the bong occassionally, as long it’s not during his season, who gives a damn?

PS. I’ve got frosted flakes with his face on the box framed and hanging on my wall. I’m not taking it down. Haha.

  • coco puffs rock , but sadly yes they will do the most harm.

  • i’d definitely let my kids take a few hits before they eat that cereal

  • haha for a CHILD?
    probably the bong…

  • In all honesty, a bowl of cereal would be less harmful than a few hits from a bong.  Now, how often one consumes cereal vs. weed would have to determine the long term harm, haha.  Really, now Kelloggs could market to the pothead crowd with munchies satisfying cereals…

  • That’s not GREAAAATTTT.

  • LOL doesn’t Kelloggs realize that they totally profit from potheadedness?  People get the munchies for Crunchies.

  • Thank you Dan! People are over reacting way too much about this crap.

  • you crash harder from a sugar high .

  • Maybe both in this case. :D

  • I’m not surprised lol. Didn’t we all see this coming? That character on the Coco Pops box is funny though. Few hits from a bong is obviously worse. But yeah, Coco Pops doesn’t look that healthy hahaha.

  • …cocoa pops? wow. that’s not a rip off at all.

  • Hahaha, as a midnight toker, I have to admit… hits from the bong will LEAD to eating Coco Pops. It is a two in one deal. So eating the Coco Pops by itself wouldn’t be as bad.

  • lol.

  • THE CEREAL >:O

    Pass that bong, kekeke.

  • Well, I guess we know where you stand on this issue.

Maybe pot is medically harmless and maybe it isn’t; I haven’t seen the
studies, and I haven’t smoked, so I wouldn’t know.  What I do know is
that anything can be harmful to your life if you spend all your money
on it to the point where you have none left for, food, rent, tuition.
Anything can be harmful if it means you don’t go to class because
you’re too busy feeding your addiction.  Anything can be harmful if it
consumes an unhealthy portion of your life.  Anything can be harmful if
it causes you to lose your livelihood, if it gets you sent to jail, if
it impairs your judgment when you’re driving your kids to school, if it
drives your SO away because they’re sick of being second priority to a
drug.  Some people can handle casual marijuana usage, other people let
it take over their life.  Point being, people need to know when to fucking quit.

I have had some personal experience with people who have no life outside of pot.  It’s kind of painful to watch.

  • (apologies for the shitty formatting the first time; I’m not really sure what’s up with my comment box)

  • Usually, bong hits and bowls of coco pops go hand in hand.

  • LOLOLOLOL. my heart broke in five when I heard Michael smoked pot, but seriously, who hasn’t now days? Besides me, anyway. :D

don’t forget the fact he was banned from USA swimming for 3 months. he won too many medals for them to drop him completely.

    x]

  • inconsistent? i would totally smoke and eat coco pops

  • I’d say the hit from coco pops is worse. Everyone makes mistakes. Getting high off corn syrup from a cereal is not too fantastic either.

  • they’re both not good…

“Good thing Michael Phelps didn’t get caught eating their cereal.”

hahaha this made me laugh :D

  • a few hits…duh. anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about the effects of marijuana on developing brains.

(this coming from a former stoner)

  • I don’t really care what Kellogg’s decides to do…it’s their money and marketing and products and stuff.

Now…if the people in charge decided to take away his gold medals for something he did in an off-season (since he’s passed all the drugs tests he had during the season) then I’d be mad. But other than that, I don’t care.

  • Health-wise there’s really no comparison. There really aren’t any known lasting health effects from a few hits off a bong; eating Coca-pops on a daily basis though….

  • @MaximMan - here here!

michael phelps is still my hero. he’s actually more of a hero to me now. come on. he’s an olympic gold medalist x 8. he deserves a hit or two.

  • did it ever occur to a parent that they could feed their kid wheaties and sprinkle in a few cocoa puffs for flavor?

  • This made me laugh.

Umm… well, if said kids are PHYSICALLY ACTIVE like all young kids who eat sugary cereals should be (… what? I was! Ha.), it’s not bad for them. Definitely no worse than hitting the bong. Not that I would want kids the age I associate with overeating sugary cereal should be toking up. =| That’s just wrong.

Although I have to say, sugary cereal makes me feel way better than any hits I’ve taken. So.. lol.

  • Does anyone really care enough about Phelps taking a bong hit to stop eating Kelloggs cereal?  Seriously!

    CocoPops is wayyyy worse.

  • I sincerely hope your tongue was firmly in your cheek when you asked that question.  Coco Pops obviously are candy that one pours milk onto, but pot damages one’s brain, believe it or not.

  • questions like this is why i love you dan! *hug*

  • what the fuck. fuck kellogs. lol it’s all about General Mills. haha.

but that’s the dumbest sh*z ever.
    michael phelps is still amazing.
and i’m sure kids don’t know what a bong is.
if they do, then it’s not his fault, it’s their parents. duh.

  • ha ha … poor choice to do this, and why would you have your picture taken ?  dumb move right now -

  • *LOL* The cereal!

  • Dude, Foke-ofe! I know you’re upset that Michael Phelps is not your hero anymore, but let it go.

Lots of other celebrities get less flack for sucking more than just a bong.

  • Obviously the cereal.

  • Technically, if you take a few hits from a bong, you’ll probably be binging on coco pops all night.

  • heh, dan, for once you and i agree completely and utterly on something. ugh at kelloggs!

  • i dont get it, because snoop dogg does it all the time and has a tv show, is a national icon, has all these record labels, etc
and hes just a normal person, just because hes famous dosent make it any different

  • Coco Pops!

But then a few hits of Coco Pops compared to weed every morning would be the opposite.

I think if you did one compared to the same amount of the other they would be equally harmful.

You are asking a little bit of one thing vs alot of another, but I get your point and yeah . . . Kellogs is evil!

  • Whatever he did wrong, at least he is using a quality piece. The only laws he broke are outdated and illogical.

  • i am thoroughly amused by your logic, which makes me tempted to say “it’d be less harmful to give the kid a bong-hit once and awhile,” however … i can’t say that with all sincerity, only with a joking smile. :] i definitely got a kick out of this post.

  • The real question is: What if that was a dildo?

  • Oh dan, I have renewed faith in you!

The pops, definitely, little, cocoa flavored bits of death, they are.

  • Cocoa pops aren’t illegal, and they do contain some of the food groups.

  • kelloggs dropped phelps. stoners dropped kelloggs. mofuckaahh (not you)

  • A good illustration of the many ways people poison themselves everyday.

  • Coco puffs – for real.

  • Apples…oranges… I think it’s already been said several times that, well, sugar isn’t illegal. It doesn’t matter if you’re eating it straight from the bag; it may eventually kill you, but you won’t be arrested for it. You may end up several hundred pounds and possibly Diabetic, but your brain cells should still be intact.

  • pot is worse.

    use both in consideration

  • definitely Coco Pops. bong makes you skinny and then died. coco pops make you fat and still alive. obvious choice. don’t ask me that again. i’m busy working on my math.

  • Oh gosh – it’s obvious the bong hits haven’t hurt his athletic abilities, so let him be.  But if he eats this tens of thousands of calories in Coco Pops, then he would be a nobody!!!!

Down with Kelloggs I say!  ^_^

  • @MrsMok - haha couldn’t have said it better myself

  • I’d hardly equate the image of an athlete engaged in illicit drug use with that of a kid indulging in a popular breakfast cereal.  Kellogg’s obviously thought likewise.  Once upon a time, they used to feature athletes on the box of more healthful cereals like Wheaties.  You might question the appropriateness of putting Phelps’ face on some of the more “sugary” fare, but that does not obviate the fact that, in any case, he’s no longer a fit example for children.  On the other hand, are there any celebrities in ANY field who are anymore?
