The Evolution of My Internet Laugh
When I first started on xanga, I would say things online in a sarcastic tone and some people would not pick up on the fact that I was joking.
This tended to lead to some controversy in itself. At one point or another, a friend mentioned to me that I should indicating I was joking with some sort of add on to my statement. I was uncomfortable using “lol” because everyone was complaining about it.
So I went with “ha ha.” After awhile someone told me that the “ha ha” felt like an uncomfortable laugh when she read it. She suggested I go with “haha.” So to this very day, I will often add “haha” to my statements.
How do you express laughter online?
Comments (124)
I tend to use “haha,” but occasionally use “lol.”
i too am also a huge fan of the “haha”. “lol” sounds like you’re just humoring someone, and like you said “ha ha” is creeperish.
i tend to go with the “haha” or the “hahaha” or the “hahahaha”
so on and so forth, etc, etc, etc.
lmao!
yeah, cool.
No, my site doesn’t cater to those without a sense of humor.
“haha” I used to use “lol,” but realized it sounded a little…eh.
I’m happy with my choice.
Either lol or lmao. I’m highly unoriginal. Sometimes I add an “lol” to the end of a statement as a way to get a shot in on someone and pretend I was only kidding.
Also, at times lol.
if its like a chuckle i write hehe
but if its full on funny haha
I totally should have been mentioned in this post because I used your laugh in my Xanga story a while back. Meanie. I KNOW you remember leaving that comment, which was similiar to this very post.
Anyway, I usually say “haha” but sometimes, because it’s unexpected from me, I say “lol.”
I only use “haha.”
When I see “lol,” I think of Lowell. Who the heck is Lowell?
Ahas. Hahas. or lol.
@drakonskry - haha
I use lol, ha, or hehe…
lol, hahaha, or bahaha. Lmao, rofl, roflmao…hahaha just any of those. Whatever comes off my fingertips first
haha or lol.
if its really funny lmao
If you’re over twelve and use lol you deserve to be shot.
Depends on how funny. Really funny gets “HAAAAH” or “ahhahahaha”. Usually if it’s mildly or not funny, “lol”. If it’s just funny, “hah”.
Depends on the situation and my mood.
I’m feeling an overwhelming sense of dejavu.
I use just about everything out there except the corrupt forms that all the cool kids use (lulz, lawl, etc.) because I’m neither cool nor a kid.
I like to use “haha” or a smiley face –
The sticking out tongue one I like to use, because in real life I actually do stick out my tongue when I think something’s funny or if I’m being silly…
I try not to use LOL anymore because it really is sooooo overused!!
I don’t. I count on people to figure it out. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t. Oops.
haha, but if my best friend texts me with lol, I tend to use lol with her. It seems weird to go haha after her lol.
I’ve seen rolf (who’s Rolf, btw??) “a kekekeke” or even “har har”, but it just seems pointless. I guess typing something like
or *laughing* requires too much energy.
i like to use HAHAHAHAHHAH or extended laughter… mostly just to get on people’s nerves!! hahhahahaha
I say “harhar” “hehe” “teehee” “jk, jking about jk” and than the most orginal one ever “lol”
it depends if its a stupid funny making fun of the funny (LOLZ, LMAO) or a good funny (haha). LOLZ
I had a comment, but Xanga ate it.
pretty sure I’m a haha, hehe, or lol kinda girl…lol out of pure habit now
Bahahaha, hah, MOUAHAHAHA, lawl,
…
I captalise my lol..if its something is really funny…like LOL.
..but usually i write haha..or with a smiley face
I hate when people write “lol” at the end of every sentence….then you dont know how to carry on with teh convosation -.-
Have you seen thewinekone about LOL?….he uses TOL coz we are not acutally laughing out loud…but actually Thinking of Laughing xD
i cant find the video right now…since..he has too many videos..
You don’t. Those of us that have refined the art of sarcasm will get it. If you don’t get it, oh well. Cold and cruel, I know, but I hate to see such good works of sarcasm ruined by crappy “lol”, “ha ha”, “hee hee” or whatever.
well, i’ll throw in a “ha” to casual conversation to let people know it’s okay to be comfortable around me. i’ll thrown in a “haha” if someone says something that is meant to be funny and i don’t think it is or if they say it first. and if i really do think that what is said is funny, i’ll use “hahahaha”, plus or minus a ha.
I lol at times, but I usually do something like haha or HAHAHAH.
forra lyttle laf haha forra big laf hahahahahahahahahaha & sumtymez but rarely lol
@saintvi - Yes, me too!
“Haha” – I don’t use acronyms unless I’m being ironic.
I’ve been doing this:
…way too often lately.
@drakonskry - No, the highlight was when my imaginary best friend graduated.
lol – means its kinda funny, but not enough for me to elicit a real laugh
haha/hahaha – or any number of ha’s, means I really think its funny.. unless I’m talking to someone I hate and its uncomfortable, then I use haha but its just a cover up so I’m not saying lol too much..
lmao – used on rare occasions.
rofl – almost never.
hehe – eh. sometimes.
I’m a haha’er myself. But I will mix it up with just about everything.
I use a combination of “lol”, “haha”, “hahaha”, and “lmao”
haha for funny, lol for funnier, LOL for that picture
I am a “haha” person myself. Though it depends on what I am saying/responding to. Years ago I used “lol,” then realized that that was a lame thing to say so I grew out of it. I will say “har har” and “hehe” from time to time as well, depending on the circumstances…haha.
Nowadays you can just add JIZZ IN MY PANTS and it’ll make every statement Hilarious.. JIZZ IN MY PANTS! =P
hahaha
lol reminds me of being 13
I lol more than I laugh.
@MyxlDove - no no no. It’s ROFL. Not Rolf.
I say Ahaha, Pahaha, LMAO, xD, or ROFL. I havent said LOL since like, sixth grade. xD
I usually go with one big fat ‘ha,’ because that’s how laughter generally occurs in my head. Lol. (Unless I’m adding laughter at the end of the sentence…then I’ll oftentimes throw in a ‘lol’ like the above sentence dictates).
lols & haha xP
i used lol in 4th grade when i first got into the whole communicating thing. gotta love old school aol. then i eventually used “rofl” and “lmao”
not i just say HAHAHA or hahaha or something of that variety. for some weird reason i feel less insincere typing out a laugh. which is weird since fiew people actually laugh like that.
haha, hehe, or wahaha
haha
xD
lol
it depends on the situation.
Usually HAHAHAHAHA XDDD or some various thereof.
*insert laugh here*
I use: ha, lol, haha, lmao, rofl, lmfao, lawl…
lol, haha, hahahaha, or ahaha
you asked this question already..
I use “lol” to show when I instantly, actually laugh. When I’m just amused but not to the point of real laughter, I use “heh.” When I’m very amused and laughing out loud, I use “haha.”
I’ve only laughed at out 3 times on the computer
Usually, I am emotionless and just say lol without laughing
i use ‘ahaha’ or ‘ha’.
lol
or for more emphasis lolllll
hahaha, lol, ROFL, OMFG…
it just depends.
I’m with Saint, the dejavu just jumped out of this blog and slapped me in the face.
hahaha
lol or lmao
I stopped using lol after a few months. and that was back in high school.
probably one of the two:
‘hahaha’ = chatting
or
HAHA = posting
I vary between “hahaha” “hehe” and “lol” depending on my mood and my focus of the convo.
i DETEST lol, i’m definitely a “haha” girl.
haha
Ugh. I hate Lol.
Hahaha, or just two “ha” ‘s works
haha. on a RARE occasion i use lol but i despise that internet lingo bullshit.
lol, lmao, lmfao, LOL, LMFAO, LMFAOOOO, LMAO, ROFL, XD, =D, HAHahah, haha, ahahah, lawl, lolz, lols, hehe. probably a few i left out. use them all though!
“haha” ive just recently picked up for sarcasam. if something’s pretty funny then either “lmao” or “rofl”
laugh out loud.
lol and heh
Mmm…. Depends on the type of laugh, I guess?
lol if I’m not laughing too hard. Haha or hehe for sort of funny. Hahaha… (number of “ha”s are proportional to how funny it is). Muahahaha for evil laughter. Or Wahahaha for laughing so hard I’m crying.
Not sure anybody actually knows what it means, but that’s what I do.
lol or haha. It depends on my mood and which one fits better.
“Bwahaha” is the word.
Haven’t you made this post before?
Depends on who I’m talking to, but usually haha, hehe, or lol. I don’t usually use lol unless it’s in an IM conversation.
varying amounts of “ha”s depending on how funny it is.
I try to switch it up… haha, hehe, LoL,
, the occasional – only when applicable – rofl!
lol, LOL, hehe, eheh.., haha, HAHA, ahah, hahahahahahahhahaha, lmao, lmfao, LMAO, LMFAO, kekeke, bahaha, etc.
I never use “rofl” or “roflmao” or “roflcopter” though. o__o
I always use “haha” because “lol” annoys the crap out of me. People don’t say “I’m laughing out loud” in really life. They say “haha”
I usually type “LOL” which is somehow infinitely better than “Lol” or “lol”. “haha” is kind of awkward to me.
i use..
LOL
lol
LMAO!
LMFAO!
ROFLTMAO!
ROFTLMFAO!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
I don’t laugh at my own comments. I just smile. If I find another person’s comment funny, I usually just say it’s funny.
a “hahahahahahaa” like, a lot. or LMAO or LOL.
Hahahahaha or bwahahahaha or ahahahahaha. I prefer to use those than lol – too short.
Haha a laughing pear!
LOL hehe
lol, hehe, heheh, *snicker*, HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA or keke
Well, when reading, I rarely break into the kind of riotous laughter that those acronyms imply (lol, lmao, etc.). More often than not, I chuckle when reading. As such, “heh” will usually suffice. Only on rare occasions will I use lol and the like.
;P
Usually by doing the “coffee spray” all over the laptop screen…
jk, haha……
how about
mwahaha
hahah, lmao, roflcopter, lolbbq…. basically any random variation…
that picture is amazing btw lmaoo
I use “hehehe” or *LOL*.
Haha… but if it’s really funny, ahaha. Laughing online always seems creepy to me, but I do it anyway. *shrug*
hehe
ha ha, lol, or roflol
hehe is my innocent giggle, then there’s LOL, LMAO, ROTF LMMFAO, and if its really funny BWUAHAHAHAHA
Yeah I have to or otherwise people think that I’m being a bitch about most things.
did they finally catch your sarcasm?
I never was a fan of “lol,” “rofl,” “lmao,” “lmfao,” etc. I always have used “haha,” “ha,” “heh,” or “hehe.” I hate when people use “Bahahahaha,” as I imagine them as being very messy, unclean, or rude. I can almost feel spit and other debris flying out of their mouth and pelting me in the face when they release their first “Bah.” That’s just IMHO. Lol. Jk.
hahahahah that picture makes me laughhhh
Depends, if i’m trying to show someone I’m joking it’s haha.
If something really is funny it’s all about the lol =)
It depends. I usually do a “heh heh” for the smug, boy-I-think-I’m-dry-and-witty laugh, then “hehehe” for more of the mischievous things. If one’s lucky, they may get a full “MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!’ out of me, which means true villainy has been unleashed, and all should run quickly.
HAHAHAAH, hahaha. LOL. ROFL. lmao. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLS
I am often mis-understood when sarcastic, so I must constantly insert those annoying little smiley faces
or say, “I am joking” or “I jest.” *sigh* I fear too many were born with no sense of humor.
~whatever
i’m a regular user of “lol,” which i think was a decision made out of pure laziness. few letters; two of them repeat, the “o” is just above the “l”, so one can quickly execute the indicator of laughter / amusement. i’m also known to use “heh. heh.” if i am NOT so amused, or “hehe” if i sincerely AM. the first and third options are sometimes followed by the occasional “jk.” i do branch out to other expressions of my internet laugh, but those would be my main staples. sure, i’ve typed out a few “rotflmao’s” now and then, but i always gravitate back towards my original, uh, favorites … if i could call them that.
HA!!!
I, too, am a “haha” type person.
HAHAHA
haha
hah
heh
heehee
bahahaha
lmfao
el oh el
Much like the Eskimos who have scores of words for snow, because of their intense submersion in it, I have plenty of laughs because irl, I cackle like a hyena.
hardly ever use lol, i mostly use hehe or haha depending on my mood, with the ocasional tee-hee.
jk also works if people don’t pick up on the sarcasm.
I stole your haha.
I think I like that gigantic pear you have there much better. I would use that every time I wanted to express laughter.
haha sometimes lol, but it looks so kiddy, so I don’t like using “lol” as much anymore.
Either xD or haha
haha usually, or lol. but lol does sound pretty rubbish to be honest. its so fake
@lovesporks - My style exactly!
this is quite a change from the usual topics …..
lul
ha ha=creepy
lol= is usually used to lighten up to situation not to really laugh
yet lol or haha is what i use=]
I type “haha.” I reserve “lol” for when something is really funny, or when I laugh out loud literally.
I generally use “haha.” Sometimes, if I’m really enjoying something, I use “Ahaha!,” but I only use ‘lol’ if I’m really not interested in what’s happening.
