  • Cursing in Front of your Kids

I was reading an article about a poll that was conducted in the U.K. of 11 year old kids and 90% of them said they had heard their parents curse.  Here is the link:  Link

I have never once heard my parents curse.  My kids have never heard me curse.

Have you ever heard your parents curse?

Comments (203)

  • All the time.

  • Yep.  Only a few times each…but I’ve heard it.

  • I never heard my mom curse.

  • In Vietnamese yes

  • Nope.

  • Yeah. And they’ve heard me curse too. I even threw a pissy fit once at my stepdad, and every other word was something rude… Of course, he deserved it, so my mom was just sitting there grinning while he was sitting there in shock…

  • I don’t have kids. But I curse in front of my little siblings much too much.

  • all the time.

    most times at me.

  • Almost never before I hit sixteen or seventeen. More now, but still rarely.

  • Actually my parents aren’t that much at home so not really…

  • Pretty much every day with my mom, maybe once or twice a month with my dad.

  • My dad cursed like a sailor a lot of the time. I didn’t pick up anything from him, though.

  • No I have not. But my father did not need to when he was mad

  • yepp. cursing isn’t a big deal in my house.

  • Definitely. My dad learned english from watching tv and those words just kinda stuck.

  • Yup. I hear tons of people curse.

  • Yup. My dad when I was younger. I didn’t hear my mom until I was a teenager. It seriously blew my mind.

  • i guess you could say it was kind of a ritual when i was growing up…hearing my parents swear at each other/at inanimate objects/at myself/at my sister/on the phone…

  • My mom has a potty mouth. When my daughter was one-year-old, I had to drive from Arkansas to California. My mom came along to help with the drive. She drove for one hour in Oklahoma and my baby girl repeated all the fun new words she learned during that hour all the way to California. Needless to say, I didn’t let Mom do any more of the driving.

  • no to both,, thats stupid,,,

hahahaha,,, how bout that,,, i just answered the question,,,,

  • yes.

The funniest cursing moment I’ve heard was when my kind, sweet grandmother whispered shit under her breath when she found out she didn’t have cake for her great grandson’s birthday party.

  • Yeah, my mom just drew the line at the “f” word. I won’t curse in front of her, even when she tries to get me to.

  • of course

  • All the time…And most of it was at me

  • Haha, my parents do it all the time. They try to control it, but a few words slip out every now and then.

  • I’ve heard my parent’s curse, but it’s very rare, and I think it was only as I got older and cursed once in a while myself. However, my dad has always cursed in Italian often, so I guess that counts too.

  • yeah, in a horrible chinese accent.

  • My parents cursed all the time when I was little. They do it way less, now, but after cussing just about every other sentence during the most infulential years of my life, they wonder why I have such an issue with cursing now…

  • Maaaaaybe once or twice when they were really frustrated…but if I cursed in front of them I’d reeeally get it :D

  • While cursing is not appropriate in all situations, the power of curse lies in the forbidden nature of the meaning behind them. I think if they hear it at all, making it forbidden merely makes it more enticing. Any other derivative will merely supplant it, too. Curse words are curse words, the power comes from the power people give them.

  • Never. My world would shatter if I heard em curse.

  • Yes, on a daily basis since as long as I can remember.

  • Nearly every day since I was born, and I have no problem cursing in front of them. That’s how I learned to curse, why wouldn’t I curse in front of them?

  • Once or twice I heard my parents curse, but they afterwards made it clear that it was not acceptable — for me OR for them — to do so. Most everybody slips up and curses in front of the kids at least once, but it should never ever be a regular thing, or an OK thing.

I’ve heard profanities come from the mouths of three-year-olds, that even I wouldn’t utter in my worst moments, and it just horrifies me. It seems so filthy coming out of the mouths of the babes.

  • They tried their best not to, but yeah, they definately did, and now my mom curses all the time.

  • Yes. XD. It’s really odd to hear them curse, but really funny x)

  • Just my mom.  The only two I hear out of her mouth are damn and shit.  My dad has never cursed that I can recall.  They’ve never heard me curse.  I measure my words around them.

  • My dad did some when he REALLY got mad, he does sometimes now. My kids never heard me say a curse word except for one time.It was on tape. I had done a skit for speech class in College on Justin Wilson. For those who have not heard of him, he was a cajun comedian that curse a bit. I had recorded myself trying to work on my cajun accent and my dad had found it looking thru some stuff throwing stuff away. He gave it to me and said I might want to keep it. I was listening to it and laughing at myself and my then 10 year old daughter was listening too and it cam to a part where I said damn. She looked at me and said DADDY! with this unbelieving look on her face.It was all I could do to keep from laughing, but it made me feel good that I had lead a good example to me kids by not cursing.

  • yes. my dad curses in front of sally and me all the time and i can now see where she gets her foul mouth. he needs to stop but he says he’s the father and the man of the house and he can do what he wants and i think it’s completely wrong.

  • yea,all the time.

  • My Mom more then my dad..

  • Rarely. The only time I can remember was when I was five and my dad had just slammed his fingers in a van door.

I figured he’d earned a gimme on that one.

  • all the god damn fucking time. Mostly my mom though. My dad only curses when he’s really REALLY mad; that’s how you know to get the hell out of his way.

  • I think my dad called me a smart ass once or twice. That’s about it though. My mom repeats what people say from work, colorful language included, but I’ve never heard her say anything remotely qualifying for an “offensive” term of her own accord.

  • Hahaha…. oh wait, I mean yes. Often.

  • I’ve heard my dad but not my mom, and think about it that study was done in the UK they cure A LOT more over there…

  • My parents curse. Not often. But they do. I have a potty mouth. I think people need to harden the fuck up. The children of the world today and the next generation are going to be the weakest pussiest humans ever. People are wrapping their children in bubble wrap to protect them from everything. It’s ridiculous.

  • All the time….but since they do it in Dutch they never thought I knew what they were saying…but I did!

  • ahah yeah very often.

  • Never.  Not even once.
And if my mom ever heard me curse, she’d beat me like I was nine.

  • I learned to curse because when I was a little kid in the backseat my dad used to have serious road rage and curse like crazy everytime he drove.  My first cursing experience was an imitation of sorts–I didn’t know what it meant so I started yelling at some little old lady out the car window.  My mom was so mad at my dad.

  • Alllllllll the time.

  • haha, when are my parents not cussing? Well, my dad doesn’t as much.

But i’m pretty sure my mom refers to me as “mother effing faggot effer” Daily.

It’s cool though, it’s what we do. xD

  • Yeah, a lot. It’s one of the reasons I’m such a profane bastard.

  • Now that I’m older, I hear them curse A LOT. They never did though when I was younger.

  • I’ve heard my parents cuss but it’s very rare.

  • My parents cuss like all the time.

  • Who really cares? They’re just words anyway. Get used to it.

BTW, I was raised Moron *cough* I mean Mormon, so no. And look at me, I end up with a trucker mouth

  • Yes when very angry.

  • All the time. When he’s watching tv, when he’s mad at me or my mom or my borther. And lately my mom’s been cursing too. I think she learned it from him.

  • I’ve heard my dad say shit once when I was younger because he sprained his leg and was in a lot of pain.  Haha, other than that my parents are pretty clean.

  • No; and I’ve not done it in front of my kids.  If one does not do it in their kids’ absence, there is no concern that they will do it in their kids’ presence either.

From the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.

  • no. what comes out of your mouth is what is in your heart.

  • Just my Mom when she’s mad.

  • A few times.

  • My dad has a foul mouth.  When I was like 4 when we moved to Ohio from Texas, I used to be the “swearing” police, and write him and my grandfather tickets when they swore around me.

  • All the time. Although it’s sometimes embarrassing when we’re in public and my dad starts cursing in front of little kids..

  • My dad, two or three times.  The worst I heard from my mom was “gosh darn it.”

I’ve never cussed and don’t plan on it.

  • My husband swears like a salior and its contagious… so, we now have a “swear jar”… coins were piling up fast. Now, its slowed down. Its a bad habit, but at least my son is learning how to change a bad habit effectively.

  • Yes, my parents swear daily.. I’ve never been one to swear, even from a young age I knew that it wasn’t a habit I wanted :P

  • My mother has the mouth of a sailor.  Actually sometimes I think she’d make a sailor blush.  I try not use foul language in front of my daughter now though.

  • Hahaha, oh heck yes.

  • Oh yes. They curse. I curse. The entire family does. lol

  • Growing up I ALWAYS heard my dad curse. Directly towards me, and indirectly. I never ever heard my mom curse though while growing up. Occasionally she does now. But I view it differently because I’m in my 20s, so it doesn’t bother me as much I guess.

  • Oh yeah, I did all the time from my dad.  You see, he had a really bad temper when I was a kid, and he went into this mode when he got mad where he really didn’t care what he said.
It’s gotten better–his temper–and well I guess his mouth has too.  But now I’m to the age where it doesn’t matter if my grandmother lets a word slip every once in a while too.

  • I was 16 when I first heard my Mom in a flurry of raw anger say the “f” word. My reaction? I almost wanted to throw up. lol….My Mama was as straight laced as they come. My young ears were set on fire that day :o )

  • Not really.

  • Never, thank the good Lord.

But my mom loves to say hurtful things to my sister and I, especially me. I can promise you I will not be like that to my children in the future.

  • my mother sounded like a gangster rapper and a sailor had a child!

  • I have never heard my father curse, and I can count on one hand the number of times I have heard my mother curse.

  • I heard my parents curse occasionally, but never anything more than “damn” or “s**t”.  They weren’t potty mouths, ever, I don’t think.
I let one fly occasionally, but only if I am very angry or frustrated.  I don’t think it’s ladylike to talk like a sailor.

  • My father would say ‘dang it.’  My mother had the mouth of a Saint.  Her F word was ‘fart.’

  • Yes, very often.

I still remember how I heard my uncle “cursing” that I was not a prodigy in music and therefore would not be able to study in a famous music academy. I was so angry with him that I did not speak to him for the whole family dinner (it was an important Chinese festival on that day). However, I was determined that I would play the piano and learn music well. Finally I got into the department of music in one of the local universities.

I heard that those who curse people are often unhappy because the curses will soon “return” to them and “attack” themselves instead. I think this is true, because when I graduated from the university my uncle finally acknowledged my ability. However, I was not thankful and silently laughed at him.

  • Yes but rarely.

  • Yeah but not very often. I hear my dad curse maybe two or three times a week. I’ve only heard my mom curse two or three times in my life.

  • yup. they never say the really big bad words, though. they love sh**. if they drop something, or someone comes/calls that they don’t want to be bothered with, or any other small thing, it’s coming out of their mouths.

luckily i haven’t been affected by this and the only time I curse is when I’m really angry.

  • it’s not polite to hex . bad karma .

  • yeah, they don’t say anything too bad though.
they try to keep it clean, so it’s rarely ever.

  • never.. Not once.

  • Yep, plenty. My mom had anger management issues when my siblings and I were young so she yelled and swore a lot. But once she got better from that, it was just casual swearing. My dad not so much, but now he’s a little more open to it since all of us curse now, too.

  • Like a Salior

    all the time

  • yes. directed at me.

  • Yes, but not a lot. I heard their friends curse a lot more!

  • I’ve heard my parents curse a few times, only when they were having a very heated argument. I know my parents have heard my siblings curse, but i have never cursed in front of them. I do curse sometimes, but i have never felt comfortable doing it in front of my parents.

  • Yep, sure have. My dad taught me every curse word I know, haha.

  • I don’t really remember my parents because they both died when I was very young my mom is simply a vague shadow in my mind and even though I was a bit older when dad died I don’t remember him ever cursing. My brother who raised me can curse a blue-streak when he is angry. But, I don’t curse…… I have no high moral reasoning for it I just have always thought that cursing sounds less intelligent. So obviously I have never cursed in front of a child.

  • People who are all OMG DO NOT SWEAR IN FRONT OF MY KIDS are usually crazy, from my experience.

Most of the kids in my family know and can say a handful or two of four letter words before they’re really able to put sentences together. None of us are in jail or should be in jail. We all grew up just fine.

  • Yeah… But I curse in front of them, too. We’re one big happy cursing family. :)

  • My mom’s curses like a trucker. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been called an asshole or a bitch or how many times i’ve been told to shut the f*** up.

  • Yeah, perhaps if dad stubbed his toe or something. But few and very far between. They’ve never heard me swear because I don’t.

  • ya since i was like 5

  • oh yea. my dad would always throw the F bomb around whenever the car didnt start up the first time  or whenever the car would stall because he didnt warn it up before actually driving it. he would also cuss alot at my mom when they argued before the seperation.

  • Woah, my parents curse all the time. I can’t believe people’s parents really don’t curse around them?

But then they get all hypocritical when I accidentally let one slip.

  • Yeah.  It’s not common language in our home though.

  • Yup, all the time. LOL :P

  • that is the dumbest thing ever WHO GIVES A CRAP ITS WORDS

  • I honestly have never heard my parents curse – either in Vietnamese or English.

Whenever people to ask me to teach them curse words in Vietnamese – I honestly never know what to say.  I have been taught more Vietnamese curse words by non-Vietnamese than I have been by my parents.

    ^_^

  • my mum taught me most of the curse words i now can’t help but swear constantly.

  • my mom didnt curse around me when i was younger, but now she does all the time. It makes me feel uncomfortable!

  • haha
my dad swears like a sailor when he’s mad…

  • I’ve heard my father curse but I have never heard my mother really curse (although she does say mild oaths).

  • only after I got into my 20s. I try not to let kids hear me swear, as a result.

on another note, one time I was playing Playstation 2, and yelled, “Take that mother fucker” and my dad yelled up the stairs at me. My siblings (in their 20′s) were laughing at the 30-some year old playing video games in his dad’s house, getting yelled at for cussing.

  • My dads a solid christian, though he says the word shit like crazy.

  • My father’s a truck driver, from Brooklyn…I’ve heard him curse.  Haha
And my mother, she curses almost as much as my father. Lol

  • um yeah, they curse at me…

  • All the time. Now I swear it big in front of my mother.

    FUUUUuuuucckkkkk ittttt.

  • @kelly122192 - ’Dem truckers sure do know how to curse.

  • Only when they’re really really pissed off. Haha.

  • My mom used to curse in front of me and AT me

I think it’s really funny when she hears me curse as an adult- her reaction is “I don’t know where you heard those words”

  • No! Once, when my dad was really upset, I heard him say, “What the dickens!” That was the closest I ever heard him get to swearing, and he was 91 when he died! I thank God for his memory and for my mom’s too!

  • Yeah they swear all the time, like every day.

  • Yeah all the time – in Chinese LOL

  • my mom used to say “shit” when she bumped her head.  i swear often, but not too much since i moved back  home (i have 7 and 8 year old siblings….

  • Unfortunately the answer to hearing my parent curse is deffinately yes, and the other unfortunate is no matter how hard I try not too, I am a guilty party of cursing infront of my child.

  • It has gotten worse as I’ve gotten older and more “opinionated”

    But not toooo terrible.

  • actually, no.  well, my ;mom maybe once later in life.  But I am glad.  sorry if and when mine have heard me.  Lets control ourselves!

  • Yup… dad more than mom.

  • my dad

  • I curse in front of my younger siblings, due to lack of self restraint. It’s not a good thing, my baby sister curses every so often because she hears me. :(

  • My parents do when they’re angry, but that’s not very often.

My parents learned not to swear in front of my brothers and me when I was two and said “bye bye, asshole!” to a mailman.

  • My parents did a tiny bit when the situation called for it; but I wasn’t influenced by them. I’ll admit though I’m the one in the house with a mouth filthier then a sailors.

  • rofl. All the time.

    They cuss at me too!

  • Never.  They like to use other tactics like self guilt to manipulate my brother and I.  And they like to complain a lot a front of us.  It’s more effective than cursing.

  • yes. highway traffic brings out the impossible.

  • Rarely, and I don’t swear in front of my parents. It would just feel weird.

  • Um, yeah.  Cussing was standard in my home.  My parents were pretty blase about it.

  • Constantly.  I see nothing wrong with swearing, words are simply words.  We each give them meaning and value.

  • I assume that people that rarely curse live happy and worry free. People that are stressed out will curse, it’s a fact.

    As for the question, yes.

  • Not sure I’ve heard my dad curse.  My mom - a couple times a year.

  • Of course.  That’s where I learned all the bad words!

  • I’ve heard my parentals curse and fight in front of me, and then they expect me to be civil to them like they deserve it.  all they show me is their hypocrisy and low dignity.

  • Yes, countless times. I’m now used to it.

  • My dad would curse all the time when he fought with my mother.

I NEVER heard my mom swear until just this year. I think she was really careful about it when we were younger, but now I’m 18, my brother is 22, and my sister is 15, so she’s not as worried about it.

  • Also, I NEVER swear in front of my mother. I still have the mindset that I’ll get in trouble for it!

  • My mom cursed like a sailor because her father WAS a sailor.  Her idea of toning it down was to say “gosh damnit”

As such I almost got kicked out of class in 5th grade for yelling SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII….p?

But then I never really cursed as a teen until the f word became cool in college.  Now it only comes out with roadrage.

  • I never heard my parents curse, and my kids have never heard me curse, ‘cuz I don’t.

  • All the time.  It’s pretty normal in my house for my parents to swear, although I didn’t start cussing in front of my parents until I was 17, 18.

  • my parents cursed once in a while and sometimes I forget my kid is in the back seat when Im cursing off some stupid drivers… LOL

  • not really. It might slip when she gets real mad. Oh but I have heard my dad.

  • My mom-yes and she allows me.
My dad-in French and only allows me to say freaking instead of fuck and mother fudger instead of mother fucker and female dog instead of bitch. shoot instead of shit.

  • My parents curse all the time, in the worst of words you could think of. However, it’s in a different language. They never curse in English and get extremely pissed if they catch one of us doing it. It’s weird, curse words don’t mean a thing to me, in English, but hearing even the most minor of curse words in my native language I cringe. I feel filthy and extremely uncomfortable.

My take on this: my impression of curse words has developed based on my parents usage of them, always using those words in my native tongue against me has left me hating hearing them. Since I’ve never been insulted with English curse words from them they’re less harsh and kind of ridiculous.

  • Once or twice. Who gives a fuck?

  • Only a few times…when I was that age, but after I was about 14, the words came out.

  • I have, but not until I was older.  Once my mom and I had like a three hour conversation on the multitude of uses of the F-word. It was amazing.

I won’t swear in front of my kids and I expect the same from my husband. I was taught that there’s no reason to act uncouth like that when there are so many other words that can be used instead.  I totally agree.

  • nope. i dont hear my grandma curse. nor my mom or any adult.
but the generation before me like my cousins do.
i hope my cousin’s kids dont start cursing!
i try to limit my cursing. cuz i dont like people that curse!

  • Yeah. I wouldn’t do it if I ever had kids though. It’s a bad influence..

  • My mother cursed like a sailor when I was a kid (and of course, if I repeated, it was bad news for me). I don’t know whether or not I think it is bad.

  • Yeah.

My dad’s a computer programmer.  We grew up calling curse words “computer words”, because that’s when he’d use them, haha.  Never at us or anything though.

  • I didn’t hear my Dad curse until I was about 16, and I have only ever heard him curse twice in my entire life.  I have never heard my Mom curse.

  • when i was younger, i rarely heard them curse. they must have been very careful about it, either that, or i was so little that whatever was said just went in one ear and out the other without registering. however, when i got a bit older, i noticed that some words made appearances in their fights, or in the occasional angry or surprised exclamation. sh*t, crap, and d*mn were the most commonly used; fairly tame in comparison to most. now that i’m in my late teenager years, they have ceased to keep such a tight filter on their mouths. i’ve heard both my mom and dad say fu*k, among many other words. now that i think about it, it’s kind of surprising.

  • My mother is the epitome of curse words.

  • my parents always curse in front of me

  • psssh yes.
    not in English, though.

  • Yes my mom cursed every once in awhile but my dad no,he had alot of selfcontrol.

  • Yes. Both my parents curse, and both sets of grandparents.

  • Definitely. When they were angry about something or dropped something on a toe, you know. My Southern Baptist mom likes to drop a word here and there to appear funny while telling anecdotes, but if we’re watching TV or a movie and somebody curses, she goes,” Ooh, they cussin’?” as if she’s offended.

    Fucking hypocrite.

  • in chinese yeah…but when I have kids I am not going to curse in front of them.

  • definately ditto with Trigger821

  • Have I ever heard my parent’s curse….

    Myyyyyy gooodness

  • Hahaha, all the time.

  • my father curses big time

    maxx

  • probably cuz i dont understand korean lolol

  • all the time..come to think of it i now know why i enjoy cursing so much lol…mmy husband hates it so i learned to cut down a lot
