Obama and the Monkey Look
This morning I was listening to the news and I heard the story about now the New York Post showed a cartoon that some are saying was racist.
The photo shows a monkey being shot for writing the stimulus bill and the comparison is read to mean that Obama looks like a monkey. Here is the link: Link
All this talk about racism has caused us to miss the real issue.

I don’t think I could answer this without feeling awful. I cannot honestly compare a human being to an animal because I admire Obama’s intelligence and I feel that it refelects horribly on me. I wouldn’t want someone to tell me I looked like a fish, let alone announce it publicly/comicly, even if I did. And another thing, black americans are compared to monkey’s constantly and I think that it’s an awful form of generalization regardless if they appear to have a resemblance to one or not.
Besides, that monkey looks cute and cuddly and I’ve never once thought of Mr. Obama as either. Especially, not cuddly.

I was at work the other day and one of the black women was throwing around the term Guido. I told her it was a racial slur and she brushed it off. Now I’m Italian( Just look at my picture, the necklace and the chest hair..), and this woman was just saying Guido this and that. So I said, that’s the same thing as me calling someone a Nigger.

Seriously though, this issue is ridiculous. You never hear an uproar about black people making fun of white people. Bernie Mac and Chris Rock made their careers making fun of white people. I remember seeing on cable a white comedian who was making fun of black people. The crowd was almost all AA, and only 1 lady took issue with his humor. Double standards.
Originally I thought this cartoon had to do with the lady who got assaulted by the chimp the other day. In other words, I thought the artist was using that as a way to make fun of the economic bill being “shot down”. I never thought about it as racist at all until the backlash began. And, of course, what does the NYT do: apologize??? Did they ever have to apologize for making fun of Bush or even Osama Bin Laden which could also be considered racist at times? No. Double standards.
If there is ever going to be any progress on this race issue, we have to stop being so politically correct (aka communist) about everything all the time. You can’t police people’s thoughts and ideas, that’s what a free society is all about. And, there can’t be double standards any more. The racial issues won’t ever go away unless we all decide to put them away. We have a black President after all. That doesn’t mean that racism and discrimination don’t happen, of course they do (how many white people so see working at Chinese restaurants?). As long as there are races, and as long as we congregate together separate from other races, there will always be cultural differences that, if we let them, can cause conflicts, at least as long as we continue to make them issues.
Duke Ellington was known as someone who never really cared about race. He just loved music and played to whoever he could. Was he aware of it, or felt the brunt of it? Sure. But he put that aside and just did his thing, white, black, whatever. That’s the attitude I think we should take.

I saw the cutest little kid that I thought looked kind of like a monkey, especially when he was clinging to his mother’s hip. He was Indian and I was afraid to say anything to my friends in case they thought I was being racist.

Well, in regards to this situation I think this cartoon, though deemed paradoy was done in poor taste.
To mock either our president or the horrific ordeal Charla Nash went through is simply tacky.
Being brought up in democratic society having a liberal view and being able to express that is still a wonder in a 21st century world.
I believe if more consideration was given to how it could be viewed by African Americans or Those who support Charla, perhaps it would have never left the drawing board.
Content and intent are a delicate balance in this issue here at hand. I can only hope moving forward we can be more senstitive to others possible view points.

Really, I think the “1st Black President” hooplah set us back 30yrs when it comes to color blindness. Up until the election I was mostly color blind. Now after “they” made such a big deal out of Obama’s blackness all I can see is blackness, and even though most the black people I personally am friends with said they wouldn’t vote for Obama no way no how, unfortunately most the black population *did* vote for him because he’s black. It is easy for people that have never been called such horrible things to call those that have SENSATIVE. Can what’s consider ugly be as well? I think African Americans know the history surrounding certain stereotypically driven comments that are ignorantly used to describe us. Does it really make us sensitive because we know our history and know what positives and negative things that have been associated with who we are and who we want to be depicted as? You don’t want to be referred to as pillage and plundering, land-stealing, minority-killing/enslaving, heartless bastards, because historically it can be proven you’ve done these things. Do you? We don’t want to be referred to as monkeys because historically we were negatively referred to as that. Now do you understand?

Obama didn’t write the stimulus bill. He just signed it. Congress wrote it. So doesn’t the cartoon actually compare Congress to a bunch of monkeys? The IQ comparison seems more valid than what the race-baiters are spinning it as.
