  • Xanga – The Pulsing Community

I read a pulse today by trunthepaige and she said, “My pulses have become more popular than my blog entries.”

It is interesting because I have noticed that pulses have increased since xanga put the pulses on top of the old subscription page.  It causes more people to comment on pulses.  Plus on the new private page, pulses are given equal weight as blogs.  So a whole blog is knocked down by a simple pulse update.

I am not being critical of the pulses.  I am sort of curious as to what the long term impact this will have on xanga.  I mentioned to xanga a few years ago that I thought they had to create more passive ways for people to update without having to write a whole pulse.  I wasn’t even familiar with the possibility of pulsing at that time.  I didn’t know about status updates on Facebook or twitter.

Pulsing is an easier way for people to communicate and I think that by the end of the year you will see more pulsing than blogging.  In fact, it probably won’t take that long.

Again, my post is not designed to be critical of the pulsing.  I am just curious as to the long term impact.  I wonder if it will slowly move xanga away from a blogging community.  Then I wonder if people will just move over to Facebook or twitter to do the same thing.  Or I wonder if this is just xanga keeping up with the times and adding passive ways for people to update.  I wonder if it will ultimately help xanga and their traffic.

Do you think xanga has a better chance to survive as a pulsing/blogging community.

  • Punishing Bad Grades

A 15-year old boy was forced to wear a sign listing his grades out by a street.

The parents wanted to punish him for bringing home bad grades.  Here is the link:  Link

Do you think it is an acceptable punishment to make their son wear his grades in public?

  • Southern Baptist

If you were going to church this morning, what type of church would you go to?

  • Who is the Hottest Woman on Xanga?

I asked a few women from xanga if I could ask everyone who is the hottest woman on xanga.  I know I left a bunch of attractive women off but I tried to pick from some of the popular sites.

    1.  Jediwa72

    2.  Trunthepaige

    3.  Antisoccermom

    4.  Casmarie

    5.  Madisonlinh

Of the women listed, who is the hottest?

  • Jessica Simpson

Alright, Alright.  We need to settle this once and for all right here and right now.  (I first saw this issue on antisoccermom’s site).

Would you describe Jessica Simpson as a little chubby?

  • Xanga Traffic and Quality Content

There is no relationship between the amount of traffic xanga gets and the quality of content on xanga.

Every once in awhile I read a comment or a post about the good old days when xanga used to have quality content.   The person will make reference to some of the people who currently post and bag on their content.

It is funny to think about the good old days of xanga.  Whenever I want to remember what the good old days were really like, I go back and read some of the old posts that were some of the most commented post on xanga.  You can do the same.  Some of the old pages that showed the most commented sites of the day are archived.

So I went back and looked at some of the most commented sites of November and December of 2004.  This was back when xanga was at its height in popularity.  Some of those pages are shut down now.  But here were some of the most commented posts:

This is a post by a guy with the name of x__thiscityisSEX.

If you look, you will see his post received 195 comments and 356 eprops.

This is a post by a guy named joe_x.

He received 198 comments with and 355 eprops.

This is a post by a guy named OoinZANEemoIDICoO

He received 196 eprops and 282 eprops.

All of this was back when xanga was the most popular.  If you go back through the archives, you will see that these sites were huge and they were the norm not the exception to the rule.

So there is no relationship between quality content and the amount of traffic on xanga.  And be careful what you wish for when you think of the good old days of xanga.

  • Obama Time

I was just reading an article about how President Obama is always running late to meetings and events.

This is contrasted to President Bush who was always on time.  Here is the link:  Link

Are you always on time or typically late?

  • Abortion Photos

A woman posted yesterday with the title “Warning:  Serial Killer on the Loose.”  Here is the link:  Link  ***Warning:  There are photos of an abortion on that site***  Do Not Go There If That Bothers You.

Then another woman wrote a post against what she did.  Here is the link:  Link  ***Warning:  She uses the F-word in her post***

What do you find more offensive, the use of the f-word or abortion photos?

  • Kelloggs and Michael Phelps

Kelloggs cereal maker has dropped Michael Phelps from their ad campaign because he was caught taking a hit from a bong.

The company released a statement saying, “his image was not consistent with the breakfast cereal.”  Here is the link:  Link

Michael Phelps is a world class athlete.  He won all kinds of medals and is a picture of health.  But he smoked a bong during the off season and he now is not consistent with Kelloggs and their breakfast cereal.

Kelloggs is the maker of Coco Pops.  The cereal is 39% sugar and has chocolate in it.  Here is the link:  Link

They have no problem making children fat and loaded down in sugar but Michael Phelps just got caught smoking a bong.  Good thing Michael Phelps didn’t get caught eating their cereal.

What do you think is more harmful to a child, a few hits from a bong or a daily dose of Coco Pops?

  • Is Valentine’s Day Forced Romance?

I received this comment from Mandiful2007:

personally i hate valentines day. people celebrate something ONE day a year that could be celebrated all year round. i think its fake. why take something like that for granted every other day of the year but one?”

Does Valentine’s Day feel like forced romance?
