Do You Care About Your Internet Reputation?
I was reading a xanga site a few years back and a person on xanga was talking about how his Internet reputation was ruined.
He mentioned that a “popular” person on xanga had said something about him and now everyone believed it and it ruined his reputation. I had never heard of the “popular” blogger at the time but I read some of the comments.
One person in the comment box mentioned that a person’s Internet reputation didn’t matter. Since this wasn’t real life, it didn’t matter what people said. He also mentioned that people are used to people saying things about others on the Internet so people tend to take things with a grain of salt.
It is funny because I have read so many things about my site over the years that I don’t tend to give very much of it a thought.
Do you care about your Internet reputation?
Comments (111)
Is that a trick question?
Or maybe you’ve not seen the most recent mud slung at me.
i care for about 5 seconds, and then i forget about it soon after because usually i have more important things to think about throughout my day.
For the most part no, but I think no one is ever really oblivious to the way people perceive them.
lol interwebz fame
Fuck no, I am an arrogant opinionated ass that feels everyone should see what I have to say. And now I have the forum for it, no more getting picked up by the police for preaching downtown, naked and drunk (which, oddly enough, is usually how I post on Xanga
)
absolutely not!
Hmm. I actually do care, yes. Well, to an extent, I suppose. A friend on Xanga can easily become a best friend for life. Woah, you said internet, and here I am saying Xanga. I think I’m obsessed, haha.
Lol they are used to it so they tend to take it with a grain of salt! Now that cracks me up..Yes there is lots who do take it with a grain of salt but a lot of people do not. Your reputation can be ruined on the internet. As long as I know I am trying my best to be respectful to others and all then no. People will try to ruin others reputation but those who are lookin’ at things with an open mind will see the truth.
uhm. not really. unless you count the fact that I’m a BA. but that can never be ‘ruined’.
Wouldn’t I have to have a reputation in order to care about maintaining it?
Hmm, things like these have a way of blowing over. So, it’s no biggie.
If I know someone well enough to care what they think, then those people already know me and my character. They aren’t going to believe the trash anyway.
Uhh, not really.
Fuck no
Yes but your site is more devoted to thoughts on issues that don’t necessarily involve you. People whose internet personalities are a reflection of their real selves more completely.. I could see them feeling some kind of way about it.
I care about my reputation in all arenas, but I don’t think I’d lose any sleep if I found out someone was saying mean things about me on xanga. My friends here know me.
@crazy2love - We share an obsession. I was thinking xanga too. ♥
Eh, it’s not too much different than real life, except you can leave at any time. I don’t want people to get the wrong idea about me on anything, but it really doesn’t bother me if someone doesn’t like me.
Not at all. I don’t mind making friends, offering suggestions and even putting a bit of my knowledge and expertise. But criticism from people I don’t know about my personal self? psh…I have no time to waste for peddlers and idiots. As Johnny said, “Sticks and stones, love.”
do you care about your TV reputation? if someone went to broadcasting slander about you would it be ok because it’s only on TV? the newest source for cold hard facts is “i read it on the interwebz so it must be true”.
it isnt my “internet reputation” i care about, it’s my reputation, regardless of where the attack is coming from. like a certain scrambled brain we both seem to disdain, it isnt the medium they use, it’s the content of their… lack of character that’s bothersome.
@saintvi - Ditto,you said it well,you always do!
Haha no, not at all. Which is why I stay away from those silly comments that try to one up me on some conflict or disagreement. It’s not worth my time, and if people mock me for it, or call me names or whatever, it doesn’t phase me at all. chuckle*
ahh xanga. i love you.
No, but I don’t have a reputation for anyone to be very critical of.
Only a little bit and only if the person is not one of the nets many morons. You do not see me crying over hectors little group.
I would care about my reputation to the extent of being nice to people, and fighting for issues I believe strongly in and making sure that I didn’t contradict myself too much between my ‘actions’ and what I say… but if someone was to insult me, I’d simply blog about it and then move on, much like I would if someone had a problem with me in real life.
IT’Z ALL I HAVE
@trunthepaige - LOL!! A retard calling others morons! Ah, the irony! You never fail to make me laugh.
You clearly have no shame or self-respect. You also lack the most basic grasp of reality, especially about yourself. Go ahead and reply if it makes you happy, but I won’t be looking at your inane response. The facts have been established, and nothing you say matters at this point. Not one bit.
For those who wonder what this is all about…

I don’t have an internet reputation.
I want to know if you care about your rep. I’m pretty sure this style of blog wouldn’t work without frequent readers.
@In_Reason_I_Trust - Well the man of many fake accounts and a weird obsession with me. So were is unnoticeable inter strength?
@saintvi - Very good point!
Hm. I care about the opinions of the people who have been reading me for several years but not so much people on other sites.
A little. I don’t want people saying that I’m this mean person. Other than that, no.
And what do you mean you’d never heard of a popular blogger?? You are one!!
No.Sometimes whenever I write things on my blog its quite personal and I really mean it though,so I might feel a bit hurt if everyone thinks Im an idiot.I’de get over it though.Im probably more open here sometimes than in real life though…………so it would be kind of crap if everyone hated me,I would try and think if there was any truth in whatever I read about myself,or what people were saying.
I dont think my blogs are that facinating to anyone else though to cause that much of a stir,I dont think anyone reads most of my blogs actually.
I had no idea people were popular and unpopular on here though,that scares me.
Not much.
sure? only if the people on the internet are the ones I know… lol otherwise no… wait, unless it can make me rich like tila tequila…the internet was what got her discovered… but i dont think i’ll be posing nude on the internet so again, NO…
Not my reputation, per se. I just care about people on the internet liking me. I never feel like I’m talking to a computer screen, and so whenever someone says anything bad about me, I take it very personally. On the other hand, I also take it personally when someone says good things about me, which is why I love Xanga… It has helped me get through some tough times =)
Unfortunately, mine are intertwined since friends and family read my blog. I have been attempting to scare them off with entries about “fighting naked” but so far it hasn’t helped. It has only generated real-life comments. lol
I’ve been told that what people think of me is none of my business but yes I like my site to be me.
Based on my last post, apparently not.
Sure. To the same extent that I care about my offline reputation. In other words, I don’t worry about it much. Sure, I don’t want people to think poorly of me, and I especially don’t want them to think poorly of me because of an untrue story. I’d like to be thought of as an upright individual, a credit to my family, God, and my community. I know I fall short of that ideal. But I really don’t think people even think much about me at all — good or bad. Folks pretty much just leave me alone no matter what.
I only care about my internet rep if my high school fame has gone down.
-___-;
Actually yes, and everyone else should be too. In an age where your internet history is checked by everyone from the government, potential employers, and your boyfriend/girlfriend… I dont want anything that I cant clearly explain being misunderstood. And honestly, everything on the internet falls in the category of “potential hotbed for inconsistency.”
Er… what does “take things with a grain of salt” mean?
i do not, i know who i am
nahhh.
Like Paul_Partisan’s tiny dick?
Who gives a FUCK what people think???
@saintvi @seedsower - - Double Ditto.
Nah, I only care about traffic
@juliebeanss - i’m confused about that too. :/
Not really. Who cares.
no i keep my image clean!
ZOMG MAH REPUTATON IZ SO IMPRTANZ!!11!!1!!!!!1!
@Yosho - agreed.
it hurts for a few minutes if someone throws some mud at me, but then i just forget about it. i mean, come on, anything someone says about me is based on what i choose to let xanga know.
that don’t mean you know me, girrrrl!
and by that i mean as far as how people “see” me based on xanga life? who could care less i do this anonymously
as far as how my public sights are viewed? that can be a matter of employment or not and i keep my image clean and guarded with only certain individuals allowed access to my sites.
I only care about my internet rep to the extent that it might spill over into my real life.
Yes and no. Part of my cares because I hate when people, even complete strangers, get the wrong idea of me. The other part of me calls the caring part of me a moron because they are, in fact, just that: strangers. I’ll most likely never meet them, so what they think of me shouldn’t bother me at all.
I think to a degree I care, but the bottom line is once you shut off the computer this doesn’t matter.
yes. and i’ve learned that forgiveness is NOT over rated.
@In_Reason_I_Trust -
that is NOT nice to say to a girl. no matter what.
no, but then i don’t care about my irl reputation either…regardless of anything and everything im gonna do what i think is right…however that shakes out in regards to people’s perceptions of me is just fine.
Yes, but if someone wants to spread lies about me I don’t really care. That just makes them a moron and anyone who would listen to them without hearing all the facts would be a moron too.
Dumb. No. Forget that. Why would you even ask?
I feel we can often be more honest in “virtual anonymity” than in real life, so exactly what is an internet repuration – your internet self, your honest self, or your real life self – or are they all the same?
When it comes to different mediums, I care more about the reputation of those close to me. I’m however honest about my reflections. I care to some degree about my own reputation in that I don’t want someone slandering me online without cause or considering the repercussions.
I’m glad we both used pictures of OJ today, haha
To an extent, of course I do. I tend to be thought of as a blunt bitch with a temper and quite frankly, I enjoy people having that view of me. Any time someone rats me out as a fairly compassionate person I suddenly have people I dislike trying to talk to me. I care about my reputation in the sense that I want to maintain absolute control of it.
Well kind of…..I mean to an extent, I try to keep my internet reputation seperate from my real reputation though
Not really
I don’t intentionally try to piss people off but if it happens when I’m voicing my opinion I don’t particularly care
HA, I am so rarely read that I haven’t a reputation. People are all “Who the hell is that guy?” and then promptly remember that they do not actually care.
I’m sorry, what? People are worried about a “reputation” made of ones and zeros? Wow! Life is rough!
Internet reputation? What is that!:)
Yeah kinda. I mean, this is me. I’m not hiding anything. So how people view me online is kinda sorta a representation of how they view me in general.
The only ones who will get hurt are the idiots who let the whole world knows about every single morsel of their daily lives. It’s like..hello?… why are you leaving your doors open to the thieves?
hahahahahahahaha! over on a body modification site I’m known as the unstable stalker chick who’s still a bamf when it comes to mods, and me, I LOVE THAT!
I like to think carefully about what i post, be it a blog or a comment. it doesn’t always happen but i try! so i guess i do care about my online reputation, every bit as much as i care about my RL reputation.
It’s… NOT REAL. Just sayin.
What internet reputation?
Yes and No. I do care about being Honest and Respectful as I try to blog about the facts of what are going on in our nation. But I don’t really care if people dislike me because of my beliefs or they don’t recomend my blog.
If I didn’t care what anybody thought, why would I bother to comment?
@ProvokingThought - I most certainly was =)
@SerenaDante - While we hold many different positions, I have found when you commented on my blog you are both spirited and genuine and you respond according to how people respond to you. I have found your discourse to be about the topic and direct questions you have. I thought your net conduct on my blog was very positive and how people who disagree or have direct questions should handle themselves. I trust you felt you were treated with respect and like in kind.
In fact many people intentionally are using a alter ego to mask their true identity because of the impact it would have on their real lives if they were exposed. Many times when you are using a alter ego it is because you do not want real life to be affected by what you write on the internet.
I would think it would be a fair answer to say those who clearly are who they present themselves to be are concerned about their reputation as to what they post, but would take a position like Paige did, when attacks come you consider the source. In most cases those opinions when compared with your actual posting will either debunk or justify the comment and then will reflect on the person who made the comment.
Not really
Yes I do.
I could give a shit less what you people think about me. I don’t know any of you in real life and probably never will, so what is the point of caring?
To an extent
Uhm, I guess…
No. It’s just the interwebz
Nope, not in the least.
No, not really. Depends on whose saying it I guess. If it’s someone I’ve known for a long time, or even someone I know in real life who says rude stuff online about me..then I’d care more if it was some person making a judgement based off of one post or comment.
When it spills over into real life, yes. Then it becomes a problem.
No, I don’t care.. I don’t have a bad reputation on here but on Bebo I do, let’s not go into that, though.
OMG my internet rep is all I have!!!!! what would I do without it?
haha.
I believe that everything I do or say is a reflection of my character. So, yes…my reputation matters a great deal to me, but no one can really ruin it unless I participate in something that causes me make myself look bad. In which case, there’s no one to blame but myself for the ”ruin”
I have to admit I do; my internet persona varies from platform to platform, because I know different sets of readers follow different medias.
Very little, if at all. I post what I find interesting, amusing or important. If anyone doesn’t like it, tough.
@bosefius - Ditto, and bwahaha!!!
fuck all ya’llz bitches i ain’t blogged in two years nigga
whelp there goes m’ rep’r!
@bosefius - funny!
@derekwilson24 - Too true!
@PetalsxPeril Well said!
I’m fair more worried about my reputation on the net with regards with what I say. There are idiots everywhere, and although they may only have two cents worth, and even then I’m being generous, they will see fit saying whatever the hell they like.
What upsets me is not when people take your comments the wrong way, or disagree with you, or call you out on something. What OFFENDS me is when people resort to abuse on the net and then try to justify it. I’m talking more than just the odd f** word.
We all need to remember that there is another person on the end of the line and if you wouldn’t have the guts to say something in real life, don’t think you are being cool by saying it on the net.
I don’t even have an internet reputation to be begin with
I suppose if you made your life revolve around the internet, it would effect you. Sometimes I care and sometimes I don’t personally.
@BelisaAmbrose - @lonelywanderer2 - It’s sadly honest
Hell, no! I didn’t care much about my reputation in the real world too. I’ll the things I feel like doing it and heck with my reputation.
You wouldn’t, haha.
It is good for you to be like that, with all the BS-spreaders.
Me being the type of person I am, yes, I would care. It’d affect me a lot: I am pretty sensitive and I do care what people think about me, in some ways, this being one. I probably haven’t explained well, but the bottom line is: yes, I really would.
No, not really. I am who I am. I’m not going to change my opinions to make some internet junkies think I’m cool.
Character is like atreeand reputation like itsshadow. Theshadowis what we think of it; thetreeis the real thing.- AbrahamLincoln
Hmmm, I dunno… Not really, lol. My identity is hidden… for reasons… but I know who I am. I don’t think I’ll believe people if they call me a purple cookie monster. C’mon, everybody know the Cookie Monster’s blue. Gawrsh.
Do I care about the opinion of users whom I don’t know? Not at all. But my “internet reputation” as a whole is how I keep the readers that I have.
I consider all my actions to be an extension of myself, and (to an extent) I care about properly communicating my intent.
