Illegal Immigrants in Hotels
I was just reading an article about how the government was using hotels to house illegal immigrants because there was not enough room in the jails. Here is the link: Link
This has created a buzz because people immediately have images of illegal immigrants kicking back in a hotel room.
But the jails are overcrowded. I know there has been a push to stop putting drug users in prison because of overpopulation.
Which group would you rather see in prison, illegal immigrants or drug users?

Illegals. I suport full decriminalization of ALL controlled substances. We’re filling up our prisons with addicts, but it’s BS. People can do whatever the hell they want with their own bodies.
I’d say… probably illegal immigrants.
But I don’t think that’s the solution to the problem either.
drug users.
xo
Deport them back to their country! Oh, no money. How is putting them in a hotel punishment…..and how are they kept guarded?
@WhenHateIsTheOnlyOption - why are they allowd to stay here if they’re just causing problems?
Probably the illegal immigrants..but who am I to say either way?
@mathematicalbagpiper - I agree fully with this comment.
Well, illegal immigrants all use drugs, you know, so just put them in jail and kill two birds with one stoner.
Illegal immigrants.
OY!!!
I’m not even touching that one.
I think I’d rather have both get their heads screwed on straight so that they aren’t breaking the law in such a stupid fashion.
Drug users.
Ilegal immigrants it is…
Lately I’ve been reading a lot in our paper about illegal immigrants being deported back to Mexico etc.
@BohemianLamb - Of course you do. You’re intelligent. I find it utterly ridiculous that the government says what I can and can’t put into my body. It’s my body, and if I want to destroy it with drugs that’s my business (not that I do, but I’m just saying that in a hypothetical sense).
illegal immigrants.
I would rather see illegal immigrants housed in hotels.
How about drug dealers? Forget the people who use the stuff…
As for illegal immigrants… aren’t they supposed to just be deported? How long are they supposed to stay in jail?
illegal immigrants. only because i use drugs.
@odiada - lmao.
I agree with the drug dealers thing. If you’re catching drug users, just find out where they get their stuff and go after them. Illegal immigrants make life suck for everyone, though, instead of drug users making life suck for just themselves.
Personally I don’t see what the point is in putting a drug USER in jail- dealer, sure, but locking up a user only helps temporarily. But, I also don’t see the point in locking up illegal immigrants. Just send them home- that’s where they’re going eventually, anyway, right?
Did anyone read the LINK?
“This is a system that encompasses many different types of detainees,
not all of whom need to be held in prison-like circumstances,”
Napolitano told a conference call.
“The move to overhaul the immigration detention system — in which more than 90 detainees have died since 2004
I’m sure the prison system has let random drug felons die in their care and institutions.[end sarcasm]
NOT all detainees have committed violent crimes. Some are working and trying to lead a regular life, the only crime they have committed is entering the US without inspection.
@Dare2BDiferentt - LMFAO! I almost skimmed right past that last letter.
@xAnotherxCasexOfxTeenxAngst - how has an undocumented person made your life suck adn for everyone else? Please do tell.
I’d rather see the illegals back in their own country and the addicts in a clinic.
It’s difficult to decide whether not possessing a green card is worse than possessing a gram or two…
It’s fairly asinine to call either a criminal offense worthy of jail time.
But, since the govt is known for being asinine, it’s more of a question of who is more likely to disrupt society, based on statistics. I would guess that it’s probably illegals, since they’re usually poor. I hope you realize how much of a stretch this is for me to even consider jailing illegals for any reason.
Drug users, because they contribute far less to society.
I want to put jail in jail…that would solve the problem.
How about we choose one of the lesser populated states and turn it into a prison state? Eh? Eh?
And then we could have them fight to the death…on dirt bikes and on dune buggies…with chainsaws and crossbows…
drugs users
I say deport them at the cost of their host nation.
drug users.
@YourOuterCritic - I was just about to type the same thing.
@AnestHEsia_79 - Stealing jobs, perhaps. I know someone whose father lost his job and has to move his family a state away because his job was moved to someplace in Arizona where “immigrants” will work the same thing for cheaper pay.
Neither
Honestly, I’d really just like only violent criminals to be in jail. And have other places for the non-violent criminals. Although I really don’t approve of illegal immigrants… I don’t understand why it’s so hard to just move here legally.
Drug users/dealers, unless they’re gang members, aren’t really causing problems for society. Nor themselves, depending on the drug.
@mathematicalbagpiper - Fully agree. It’s a waste of our time and money to imprison these people. Sure in cases where they have kids/dependents I think they should take the children away or require mandatory inpatient rehab, but if you’re without kids and want to fuck your life up, go ahead.
@squeakysoul - Not necessarily true. Some of us have real jobs.
Drug users.
Illegal immigrants and violent offenders. I’m all for decriminalization. Our jails are filling up WAY too quickly.
drug users, is this even a question…?
I’d rather see…real criminals in prison.
@molly_quinne - the system is too slow. My family used to be composed of illegal immigrants (they now all have green cards/citizenship after more than ten years of waiting). When you have a family to feed, and you know that even though it’s illegal, you can get more money in the USA, you will take that chance and go earn the money to support your family, rather than wait ten years and have your family starve and live in rags.
I think I’d take drug users over illegals though. If we’re that adamant against illegal immigrants, why not just deport them? it’s unfair to punish someone because they’re seeking a better life (because, contrary to popular belief, that is what the majority of them are doing). Unless the illegal committed some other crime, I don’t see the point of it.
both groups had problems with the package——drug users are basically wasting the things we value , but it depends on the user—i guess theres sellers but they arent in issue—–users are a tuff breed——pot users shouldnt be in jail—now illegals are often using and selling drugs —–often—-but it a sticky issue cuz it just is—they can get better fed in prison than on the streets of mexico—why not just export them—–mexico is such a mess —in 5-10 years when the country is in ruins people here will finally see what a real mess it is—–we should help them ‘recover’ from there drugs wars and give the keys of the country back to iraq——-thats another screwed up mess—————
Well, if the hotel that the illegal immigrants are housed in is the Hotel California, then I don’t think we have to worry about them enjoying it. I mean sure they can check out anytime they like, but they can never leave. They’d get tired of staying there, especially since they haven’t had wine there since 1969.
drug users in clinics, illegal immigrants back to their country
@YourOuterCritic - probably the best response.
Never been a fan of drug users being behind bars – jail/prison doesn’t do them any good. There is very little rehab available to them while incarcerated, so really they’re just soaking up tax dollars. Mandating them to a rehab would be far more effective. You can’t force them to rehabilitate even if you force them to go, but it was my experience that most would like to reform themselves if given the right tools. Once released back onto the street, they usually won’t go looking for those tools.
I used to live on the border and know these issues firsthand. They are NOT criminals and shouldn’t be treated as such!!!! I think anyone who want to tout negativity should go live on the border for awhile and really know the issues firsthand. This country is so full of loudmouths and know it alls that really haven’t a damn CLUE! When you see babies coming over starving and knocking on your doorstep for water you might know what I mean. Until them you should just shut the f*ck up!
@xAnotherxCasexOfxTeenxAngst - oh get off your high horse!
@SladeTheGreyFox - too bad we can’t deport idiots like YOU!
i don’t think either should be put in prisons, i don’t think that prison is the best solution to either groups of people. but that’s just me.
Neither. Both help this country run. Many people come home after a long day at work and smoke a blunt to relax. For many people it keeps them sane. And we all know the country runs on the backs of illegal immigrants. Neither.
So many people know so little about immigration. It’s more complex than most people seem to know.
Many immigrants do not want to be here, but are rather forced to because the US companies that used to be in Mexico and other Latin American are now moving to cheaper places like Asia. Also policies such as NAFTA have led them to be at a large disadvantage and many lose their jobs in Mexico because of it while the US benefits. Safety and job standard policies are not enforced much in other countries, leading to worker abuse, water and food contamination, low pay.
Large companies that want to save on cash will recruit these immigrants, get them fake identification, and pay them below legal limits right here in the US. Therefore, in many ways, immigrants are not so much “stealing” jobs, but rather being offered them because already rich companies want to become even richer.
This is not what the question at hand is asking, but it is some background for those that don’t seem to know much except for what is fed to them by mainstream media.
Anyways, I think prison is a lame way to house either of these “offenders”. Unless it is a notorious drug dealer, a drug user who has or is putting someone else in danger, or an immigrant who is done something that is actually harmful, they shouldn’t be imprisoned anyways.
@xAnotherxCasexOfxTeenxAngst - You have no idea do you? Your talking some rhetoric you heard your relatives or media rant about.
In any case, you people do have a way of regurgitating what you Hear. I speak from personal experience. And NO Im not from Mexico, so please don’t tell ME “go back to Mexico”.As soon as you people see a brown person of with an accent you automatically asume they are immigrants. We dint immigrate to the US, We were here long before the colonies and OUR forefathers. If you really want to find out why your friends father lost his job, look into the Corporation he was working for. They have moved thousands of jobs not just to Mexico but to India/China.
Who do you think made your shoes? Where were your jeans sewn?jesus christ, the damm computer n keyboard im typing on right now was probably made in another place.
Immigrants cause unemployment because they take jobs from native-born Americans.
The largest wave of immigration to the United States since the 1900s
coincided with our lowest national unemployment rate and fastest
economic growth. Many studies have shown that even among low-paid and
minority groups, immigrants do not cause native unemployment.7 If anything, many believe that immigrants create new jobs with their purchasing power and the new businesses they start,8
a pattern that has been particularly important with the emergence of
the high-tech industry. According to one recent study, immigrant
entrepreneurs founded 25 percent of all U.S. engineering and technology
companies launched in the last decade — such as Google, for example,
which was co-founded by Russian immigrant Sergey Brin.
Immigrant-founded companies were estimated to have generated $53
billion in sales in 2005 and created about 450,000 jobs as of 2005.9
I suggest you read this.AND take the quiz.
Immigration Myths
@striemmy - optimo PEach <3 HEll yeah! jaja…
Drug users. Illegal immigrants are “illegal” because they need to be, for some reason. Taking drugs is more stupid.
@AnestHEsia_79 - Note how I said ILLEGAL immigrants.
neither one of those groups needs to be housed with violent offenders. Jail changes people, most of the time not for the better. If you put someone who wasn’t violent to begin with in with those people, there is a certain amount of their mentality they are going to have to adopt to survive in jail. Non violent offenders should not be placed in jail with violent offenders. So I would rather see both in hotels. But I also think that we need to stop telling people what to do with their body. It is not illegal to eat yourself into the grave, so it should not be illegal to do other harmful things to your body. Now if someone does someone hurts another human being, then that should be illegal. Alcohol is still legal even though it causes more violent offenses than any of the illegal drugs. Sorry, I went off on a rant there..but my point is, I would be okay with both being in a hotel room, and I don’t see as how a hotel room that is guarded is truly that different than our modern prison system.
@earthymama - lol
Neither.
SEND THEM TO SINGAPORE. Most of the drug users will get hung, so there will be space for the illegals
Drug users should be in rehab getting well and illegals should be sent back to where they came from…problem solved.
I think the fact that they put the illegal immigrants in jail and not send them back to the country in which they have legal citizenship is horrifying. If I had to choose between one or the other however…I would choose the drug users being in jail. As much as I wish people would be law abiding and get into the USA legally, most illegal immigrants do not cause the same problems some drug users cause, in my opinion.
Why don’t they put drug users in prison (or require them to live in Amsterdam and send them there) and send the illegals back to where they came from? That seems most logical.
@DelightInDecadence - I like your solution the best so far.
@MomGoneMadd - But your’s is a close second.
I would rather illegal immigrants spend as little time in US jail as possible. I would like them to be deported soon after being caught as illegals. I have nothing against foreign people coming to live in America, but unless there is some fear-of-being-murdered emergency, I do not think they should try to come here illegally. No matter where they are from.
I think some drug laws are stupid. I am an advocate for legalizing marijuana, for one thing. However, if the issue is too little prison space, I would rather they build more prisons. I know they aren’t popular to live close to, and they cost money to build, but at the same time they also open up a lot of jobs for people and jobs are important in this economy.
But, I know that these are probably quite unpopular opinions. :p
immigrants
Drug dealers of any sort. Having been in a class full of stoners, I know that drug dealers need to be stopped. Selling drugs to 12 year olds? I’m dead serious when I say 12 year olds. 12. TWELVE. What has this world come to?
