The one in my fridge is currently 2 weeks after it’s “Best by” date. Still taste okay.
Hell yeah.
Not at all.
1 day? Of course I do- unless it smells bad or is curdled.
i am anal. when you have a kid, you have to be. i’m so scared she might get food poisoning.
I would check it before throwing it. It could still be good.
no. i check the date before i eat or drink anything.
i have a weak stomach. xo
no. but i don’t drink milk… so… i wouldn’t care in that case. lol.
Technically, you can still drink it within a week.
like hilaw said, when you have kids gotsa to be anal. I had a whole gallon of milk that wasn’t touched and I ended up throwing it out cause it expired that day.
Dont drink milk…but have had rice milk past its date and it was fine.
Yeah. I do.
I think 1 day expired for milk is okay. I’d probably sniff it first, but hey if I want some milk, I want some milk.
Yeah. It’s good for at least a few days after that date. It’s just the sell-by-date, or so I’ve been told, or lied to, by my parents.
As long as it smells ok. If your fridge keeps things cold, milk will usually last several days past the exp date, besides, thats the expiration for them to sell it bye
I’d do a taste/smell test.
I agree with the taste/smell test. However, I don’t drink milk, because I’m lactose intolerant.
Sniff test, but more than likely no. I had a bad experience with chunky milk back in 5th grade. It will forever haunt me. ~V
yeah as someone said : smell it and taste it first – give it a little sip / taste test See if its murky but most of the time I would drink it its only 1* day past the expiration date no big deal
Haha most likely.
Nope.
Well, I don’t drink milk, but if I did and it didn’t smell sour, then sure. Nowadays, milk is stamped with a “Sell By” date instead of an expiration date. At least around here it is.
If it smells okay.
Yeah. If it’s past the date though, even by a day, I always smell of it. But heck yeah, it’s not going to ruin in one day! They have to put an expiration date on it.
Perhaps, if I’m liberal with the expiration date of other’s, God will be kind with mine.
nope. down the drain it will go.
Yes.
I don’t know, I never have this problem. A gallon of milk lasts about 3-4 days average in my house. If it was just a day, sure as long as it smells okay I’ll try it. Much longer than that, and I don’t think so.
No way. I don’t even go one day over on beer.
most likely
do a smell test and check to make sure it’s still white
Probably.
No, I wouldn’t. Even if it’s only one day over my appetite will most likely be ruined.
you ALWAYS smell the milk before you drink it, regardless of the date.
Before and after expiration date. actually, if the expiration date is past I dont even try it. to the can it goes
uh yeah almost always.
I don’t drink milk. I imagine if it smells fine it’s still usable. Or drinkable, in this instance.
Not milk. I once accidentally forgot the check the bottle and I had the worst food poisoning of my life. It smelled/tasted fine.
Smell it first. I just had a bag of chips that had the “sell before July 10th” date.
Expiration dates are kind of like “hey, this is going to spoil soon, you have a window, don’t pass it up.”
I’d smell it and then take a sip to see if it’s okay. The last time I had milk past the sell-by date, which was a few months ago, it started to go sour after just one day past the date. Down the drain that milk went.
I’d give it a sniff first, and if it smelled OK I would take a sip. If it still tasted OK I would drink it. One day probably isn’t going to make much difference especially if you keep your fridge really cold.
IF there are no big chunks in it…sure, I would.
no. ew
Never. I don’t eat, or drink anything past its expiration date. I have an extremely weak stomach, and I have three kids that I have to think about. Anything past the date, is thrown out.
depends on how it smells.
Not a chance. I have no sense of smell so can’t try that either
Sniff test then taste. But for a mere day? Just chug. Expiration dates are more like guidelines not rules. At least in my book!
first I do a smell test. If it smells ok, I do a sip test. then and only then would I drink it. But I’m very picky about my milk and the dates. I try to buy milk from the way back of the shelf because it has a later date on it. my limit is usually 3 days after. usually
I’ll smell it first. I never really follow the expiry dates. It’s another matter if the product is obviously spoilt.
i’d sniff it first. =P
No.
milk, no. Anything canned or plastic sealed, sure.
I throw it out – when it’s green and hairy. Other stuff leaves on it’s own steam.
been reading the comments and i’m surprised by the number of people who dont drink milk!
i’d do a sniff taste. if it smells fine, its probably alright.
No
i get free milk =] if it goes bad im not out any money lol
NO! Never…I am very picky and follow expiration dates to a T. I don’t eat or drink anything if it’s past the expiration date.
usually milk a day expired tastes really funny to me. so, no?
i only follow the expiration dates for daily products….processed foods are okay.
No
i wouldnt drink milk straight out of a cow,,, milk is not for human consumption,,, most things tho,, expiration dates are more of a suggestion,,,
food,, its a pretty good idea to go by them tho.. or as close as necessary,,, kinda like in hand grenades and horse shoes…
If milk is spoiled or curdled, you will know. Lol! I have no problem drinking milk after the expiration date, up to a point. But, one day after the ex date? I really feel that that is just being finicky. :p
Then again, we don’t have a lot of money to just throw out a food product right now that might still be edible/drinkable. So, that also fuels my reasoning.
No way
Yep. I smell it to make sure it’s alright and then, if it’s alright, I drink it. Expiration dates are basically just ”sell by” dates anyway.
Ew. No way. Sometimes even 2 days before the due date, the milk or whatever drink with lactose will start to get clumpy.
Negativo.
Yep…
first i’d take just a small mouth and if it tastes right then i’ll drink it all xD
No. I will not drink the milk one month before expiration.
of course. It’s still good for a week.
nope..
Nope. I’m lactose intolerant.
Anything else, though, I’d eat/drink if it was just one day past the date.
I have worked in several food production facilities and on many products the customer determines the sell by date, so one chain of stores may give the exact same product an extra week of shelf life, if they believe it will sell. Always check the date, then smell it and make your own decision. On things other than milk it is somewhat arbitrary. And you won’t get food poisoning from old milk. It may taste nasty, but it won’t hurt you, even when it has started to get chunks in it.
I imagine you got this idea from hanging on Facebook…
One day, definitely! Besides, milk is usually good for a few days after the expiration date, but always taste first!
nope however i dont drink milk…
When my husband and I first got married, that was one of our first knock-down, drag-out fights. Over the expiration date on the milk carton. Pretty sad, huh? I told him I was going to black out the date and then he told me he would never drink milk again. One day! Unless it smells sour, one day is not going to kill us.
I would drink it unless it smelled bad. I find milk is usually good at least a week past its expiration date. Eggs are good a month or more past…
The expiration date has little to do with when some food ACTUALLY expires…
Nope. Freaks me out!
I’m lactose intolerant…
Yep, the milk is fine to drink a few days after the expiration day. They have to put a date as a guideline to keep people from purchasing milk that has gone bad.
No, most likely I would not. Unless I was REALLLY craving cereal, was to lazy to get milk and it smelt okay. Then I would use it and chuck it.
Nooooo. I don’t eat a lot of dairy stuff anyway, so potentially spoiled dairy is on my “definite NO” list.
I stop drinking the milk about 2-3 days BEFORE the expiration date. Just in case.
No way.
As Calvin said, I don’t like taking chances with things that print the date you might expire.
I use milk til around the week after expiration and eggs almost a month, or until either smells really skanky.
-LkVs
I have my brother smell it because I can’t tell… I learned my lesson. Once I was pouring the last bit of cereal with the last banana I had into a bowl. I took out the milk and forgot to check the expiration date. All that came out were chunks.. and it was only a day past its best sell date. You never know… I always check..
I would check it. If it wasn’t curdled, I would smell it and give a cautionary taste to check it.
Nope.
I’d sniff it first. I’ve also had milk go bad a full week before its expiration date. So I’m always sniffing the milk.
One day would probably be fine if it looked and smelled okay. Beyond that usually I just toss things because most things are bad by then in my fridge.
I not eat or drink anything on or past the expiration date. If the date on the container is Dec.4., then that is that day it is thrown out.
i rarely drink milk as it is.
but i usually throw it out if it’s past the expiration date. even by one day. D:
Hell no. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I can smell the milk starting to go sour days before the expiration date. That’s why I only buy quarts and I make sure to finish it within a week.
the date on the gallon of milk as well as most foods is a “best by” date, that isn’t the expired date, all foods have a wide range for when they expire. I have had milk in my fridge for up to 2 weeks past the “best by” date that was still fine. I always smell or do a small taste test of a food product before I use it for cooking or consuming but the date doesn’t mean it is going to cause food posioning if consumed that day, its just a guideline so the stores know when to throw it out.
Like what saintvi said, at least in MI it’s got a sell by date and that’s usually good for a week; I usually push it to 10 days. But yeah, I’d just smell it.
No. I’ve had bad experiences with expired milk as a child.
Depends on how it smells.
smell it. One day shouldn’t be bad.
If it doesn’t smell funny, yes. I don’t mess with eggs though.
I can’t remember the last time I bothered to check an expiration date.
If it were bread, yes but milk, nopeee…I easily get stomach aches from that.
i stop drinking the milk 2 days before the expiration date
I would just smell it =P
Right now I’m drinking soy milk that doesn’t expire til Jan, but it said “best consumed within 5-7 of opening”…I opened it over 7 days ago. XD
I think the best thing for milk is to place it somewhere in your fridge where it isn’t exposed to light everytime you open the door and the light blinks on. Using this method I have owned and drank milk 1.5 week(s) past date and it was fine. As for owning kids and being “anal” (ew what a term) KIDS EAT EVERYTHING, so they will probably be ok.
Ugh, no! I drink Soy Milk anyway, which tastes MUCH MUCH better.
Even if it is curdled, it won’t cause any illness. It might make you physically sick, sure, but you won’t get food poisoning. It’s all in one’s mind.
no!
I’m the type of person who smells things before I consume it. Don’t judge me buahaha
It’s usually ok if it’s just 1 day. That’s just the sale by date anyway. But if it is past the date I smell it anyway…just to be safe.
if it smells good, go for it !
I wouldn’t but my husband would
Expiration dates are a scam, created by the food industry to encourage consumers to buy more. I once had some pasta and sauce, both 5 years past their expiration date, and it tasted the same as a ‘fresh’ can/box of the same.
Oooo…good topic. My husband and I totally do not agree on this. He says ANYTHING that is even a day past the “consume by” date should be thrown out. I’m a little more flexible. When it comes to meats, yeah, I agree. I’ll even toss meat that doesn’t look or smell like I think it should…even if I just bought it a couple of days earlier. But other stuff (especially boxed dry foods)? If it looks okay and smells okay, then I won’t toss it. My husband hates that. LOL
I am always smelling milk before I drink it. Regardless of the expiration date. You see I live with lazy folks who sometimes leave the container out of the fridge and “forget” to put it back. I have fixed that problem by buying Lactaid. No one touches my milk and Lactaid lasts a looong time.
I think food is good for a week after the best buy date.
Yes, if it doesn’t smell.
Yes, I follow them. The OCD in me would not allow me to drink it. To me it is considered spoiled if it has even todays date on it. Funny thing is that I had a similar conversation with my dad last night. ESP, maybe??? lol
yeah. but milk never lasts long enough to be expired in my household
i’d give it a whiff. if all seems normal, i’d go for it!
uhmm no..i would drink water. problem solved
Oh heck yeah! But sometimes with milk, I go with the smell because if it’s got that smell, it gets chunked.
No way!
One day isn’t a big deal. I don’t throw away milk until it smells. Or curdled. I’m probably more observant over the meats.
Yes.
Just check the milk. I’ve had things way past their exp date, that are still fine. Eggs are usually one of those things. Bottled water is, too, obviously! However, I’ve also had things that are not yet expired, if you go by the date, but WHOA are they actually foul. Also, there is a difference between “use by” and “sell by.”
yes
If it was 1 day, it’s really not a big deal for some things, but milk I would definitely not drink. If bottled water was expired a year, I’d still drink it. It’s water for crying out loud.
Most things are fine a day after the expiration date. A week… no way jose.
I’ve drunk milk 4 days off before… it smelt… okay? My dad is one of those people who constantly like to remind us that he grew up in poverty and so would eat anything he could…
YES.
Hey, the rest of the cereal is calling my name…
yes but I’m Canadian so we can handle that shit.
I would sniff it. If it smells like a VD hell no.
eww no.
I just make farmers cheese out of it when it gets old… I smell it first and if it smells ok yeah I’ll drink it. But its it smells sour or it looks bad.. I just leave it in the fridge for a few more days maybe a week and then make some homemade cheese with it. Waste not want not.
When an experation date says that something is expired, especially with dairy, I smell it and or look at it. If it smells sour or has chunks floating in it, then no, I’m not going to drink it, but as long as everything seems kosher, why not? Expecially if you haven’t opened it yet and the seals are still intact, then you still have a good 3-4 days after opening before it’s really expired.
And the same goes for if you buy fresh milk and open it ASAP, it can go sour even before it’s shelf life (which is actually what the experation is.
