The Darker Side of Mother Teresa
A group of atheist are protesting a stamp with the image of Mother Teresa.
The group is trying to get out information about the “darker side” of Mother Teresa.
The group believes that since Mother Teresa was a Roman Catholic nun, then she should not be placed on a stamp. The concern is that she is known mainly for her “religious undertakings.” The Postal Service indicated she was know mainly for her “humanitarian work.” Here is the link: Link
Do you think Mother Teresa should be featured on a stamp?
Comments (118)
Sure, why not? They don’t have to buy it.
HAHA
Absolutely!
Sure, why not?
She’s a hero! Err… Shero?! Heroine? Yeah, I think that’s it.
Anyway, yes she should be honored for both her humanitarian efforts and for her faith.
Yes!
Mother Teresa has never done me wrong, so I’m fine with it.
Sure, why not?
Oops, someone said that already.
Yes. She should be honored for her humanitarian work whether it was inspired by a poor kid she saw on the side of the road or by her belief in her Lord. The fact remains: she has done more for humanitarian causes than anyone else ever has.
If you don’t like her, then buy stamps that don’t feature her. Plain and simple.
That’s not a stamp I’d buy, but sure.
Yes, for all of her achievements, but just to the nay-sayers: There are also Simpsons and Mickey Mouse stamps. Anything gets a stamp, so OMG STFU.
yeah, why not?
Oh, give me a break, people complained about that? Of course she should.
sure, why not.
Yes.
absolutely!
and YES she is famous and historical because of her humanitarian work. Period
those atheists trying to stop this are turning intolerant and extreme
One of their claims is that Mother Teresa’s charities could have provided better care than it did. Is that why she would dig through the box of donated shoes to find the worst pair and keep them for herself so no one else would have to have the worst ones, which resulted in her feet being deformed?
Come on!
Absolutely, yes. She was a wonderful woman.
Why not? If they can sell stamps that way go for it. Our post office can use all the income they can get. There must be some famous dead atheists out there we could do to balance things out for them if it’s a real problem.
Eh. I don’t care either way. I read somewhere that she and her fellow nuns provided “care” that emphasized prayer over actual medical help. That, of course had disastrous results for a lot of people who could’ve otherwise lived longer. If that’s true, then she doesn’t deserve all that adulation. The end.
Nothing new here. The most vocal of atheists tend to be better little pills best ignored.
Yes she should be on the stamp
Just more proof that atheists are idiots and have nothing better to do than to try and justify their pathetic worldly views.
yes…
Yes.
as everyone has said she did a lot of humanitarian work, so yes she can be put on stamp
Fundamentalists of any stripe make for good comedy, and that includes the fundamentalist atheists who think that anyone religious is either a) insane or b) evil.
Dear Atheists in question, you’re turning into the zealots you claim to despise.
The funny thing about Mother Teresa is that she was an inspiration to people of many religions in India, whether they are Catholics, Hindus, or Muslims. In fact, those three groups can actually all agree that she was doing good for the poor of Calcutta, regardless of belief.
That being said, has those atheists in that said organization ever lived in the dirtiest slums in the world, providing care for the unfortunate?
I’m not Catholic either, yet I would buy these stamps commemorating the sacrifices she made.
That’s a scary stamp…. So no.
Nope, you don’t put the pope on a stamp, why mother theresa?
absolutely. im with the USPS on this one. she wasnt known as a catholic, just as a humanatarian.
People are really going to complain about that? Sheesh.
The dark side of Mother Teresa? That’s funny. I don’t quite understand their objections considering everything else that gets it’s own stamp. Hey, I want my own stamp! Maybe I should post something about that. Hm.
Mother Teresa is an inspiration to everyone, regardless of their religion. As for her “darker side”, we’re ALL human. Mother Teresa just tries to make the best of it.
Good Lord. Atheists suck. I’m not Catholic, but Mother Teresa arguably did more for humanity than any other 20th century figure. Atheists need more time on their hands. Something to occupy their small brains.
She was a human being; of course she had her low moments. Everyone has low points in their lives, which is something that these nutcase atheists are conveniently forgetting.
Yes, she should be put on a stamp; screw the complaints of the secular wackos.
I’m an atheist, but I think it’s stupid to complain about the stamp just because of Mother Teresa’s religious beliefs. So what? If anything, she should be remembered and commemorated for her benevolence, not necessarily for what she believed. Does anyone blast Martin Luther King Jr. stamps just because he was a pastor? No.
Oh, and I think everyone belittling atheists in their comments should rethink making hasty generalizations; it’s making them look as ignorant as the atheists described in the link. Or maybe they should read the article, as it mentions atheists outside the organization that defend the stamp.
Wasn’t Mother Teresa the lady who said raped women must birth their babies without any sympathy? I’ve read some articles that have claimed that she only cared about preventing abortions without even giving a care about the victims trauma.
Yes she should. I don’t believe in her god, but I do believe in the good works she did. If more Christians were as humble and sacrificing as Mother Theresa, perhaps the world wouldn’t need angry atheists.
Lets see, the Catholic Church hasn’t granted her sainthood, but the U.S. government has honored her with a stamp. Damn, why is the Catholic Church so slow. Also, for the record I vote yes.
i have no objection to the stamp.
@randomneuralfirings - agreed
Thats horrible.
“Its ‘freedom OF religion’, not ‘freedom FROM religion’”.
Why not? Mother Teresa helped countless people in her lifetime! Doesn’t that count for anything!!???
I side with Christopher Hitchens on this one. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Missionary_Position_(book)
There’s always some asshole ready to protest anything regardless of how ridiculous it is.
They should put Hitler on a stamp to balance things out. Then everyone’s happy!
If you don’t like the stamp, don’t buy the stamp.
She did many good things for the world. I’m sure plenty of people who have been on stamps had darker sides and were much worse than her.
Its not like you are rooting for religion. You are honoring her because of the things she did to help the world.
I suppose a Mother Teresa stamp would mean that a state religion had been established…
Honestly, the ‘I hate God’ crowd is so ridiculous sometimes.
Mother Teresa did good things, AND IT’S STAMPS. It’s fucking stamps! People are seriously going to protest a fucking stamp? “Malcolm X was a Muslim, let’s not give him a fucking stamp.” “Elvis sold sex to young girls by dancing at us, let’s not give him a fucking stamp.” Everyone’s a something, let’s not give anyone a stamp, stamps should just be colors (NON-GANG RELATED COLORS). Red and blue stamps make people crazy! Cover the sky, it’s blue and it’ll make your kids shoot people! *gun to head motion* POHHH
…don’t buy the stamp. seriously.
i swear, some atheists just go off on ANYTHING religious. it’s ridiculous.
People have weird things they get up in arms about. As an atheist, I think we have bigger fish to fry and should learn to choose are battles.
@GeoCachingFan - Yup. We’re all complete morons. I actually had to get a religious person to type this out for me – she had to interpret my grunts into actual words, which is tricky, so I hope nothing’s lost in translation.
Yes, slap her on there. The work that she did and example she provided overwhelmes whatever religion she happened to have learned universal truths in.
wait….people still use stamps?!?!
..anyway.. Sure! I think she made a lot of contributions. And why not. It doesn’t bother me.
Did people make a big deal about the Postal Service putting Elvis on a stamp?!?! No, Probably. Not that I’m comparing Elvis and Mother Teresa… But I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I say go for it! It’s not like they are putting Hitler on a stamp or something! Now, that would be crazy..To me.
I think most people think of her more for her humanitarian efforts. Who cares what religion she was? If being catholic was her reason for doing what she did, more power to her. It matters that she did it. So yes, why not put her on a stamp?
Its a stamp, evn though I dont agree with Mother T. Besides, the 1st Amendment does not allow the government to mess with religion(they do it anyway), but allows religion to mess with the government. Stupid interpreters!
I don’t care it’s not like I have to use her stamp!
if she was exactly the way the media portrayed her, i would have no problem with her getting her own stamp. i mean, she was a saint, right?! actually, she was obsessed with suffering, and surrounded herself with suffering individuals in order to be “closer to god”, and even forbade friends and family from visiting those in her hospitals, because it would provide them with happiness, and thus, they wouldn’t be suffering. the nuns within her ranks were forbidden from holding crying babies, because mother teresa wanted them to suffer. so, for that, i wouldn’t want her to be on a stamp. but it’s not a forever stamp, anyway, so who would buy them?
TOTALLY yea! I wonder why it never happened sooner!
She absolutely deserves a stamp. I can’t see why she wouldn’t. So the groups she worked with were religous organizations – um, duh, she was a nun. So because someone is a committed Christian, they shouldn’t be honored? Oh please.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it, because she was also a wonderful woman who helped millions.
NO! She should have been tried for war crimes.
I.Dont.Care?
Only Catholics remember her for being Catholic. Everyone else remembers her for being a humanitarian. This group needs to get the stick out of its butt.
No one noticed Mother Teresa when she died the week Princess Diana died, so she deserves to get some recognition now.
Talk about sweating the small stuff. Gah.
Boo hoo…. the people complaining need to get over it and start focusing their energy on something better.
Sure, why not.
Yeah, it’s not like everyone in the world has to buy it or else. It is a free country, after all…
Yes, I think it’s okay. She was an overall amazing person, she deserves it.
Aaghhh….Yes it shouldn’t matter! It’s just a damn stamp. We have stamps with the Virgin Mary on them, we have all sorts of religious stamps, not only for Christianity. This shouldn’t be such a big deal.
@Iobot - LMAO
Yea
i think having her on a stamp to commemorate her efforts is a great idea. anyone that disagrees could purchase some other design. as for her “dark side”–well, we all have one so those atheists and any others who may have idolized her will just have to get over it. funny thing, those two very different groups being in the same situation…
Ugh. Can’t we just agree to disagree? Let it go, the stamp’s not gonna rear up and attack you.
This is just petty people out for publicity. They had no problem with Rev. King being honored for his civil rights work.
I’m not offended. why not?
if they don’t like it, don’t buy it!
That’s whats everyone is saying hahaha.
No to Mother Teresa on the stamp. We also need to take the pedophile Benjamin Franklin off the hundred dollar bill.
@whitetrashpoet - lol, exactly!
I thought she became an atheist toward the end.
The way I see it is this. Currently, we have a day named after a well-known Baptist pastor. We honor him in this country every year and even banks shut their doors and observe the holiday. If the same people will say that we should not honor that man, then I will gladly respect the consistancy of their opinion. If, however, they insist that he be honored, and that we cannot have a stamp of a woman who did as much as she did, then I maintain they lose all validity. Somehow, I doubt, however, that they would ever say that we should not honor the Baptist pastor known as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
@andfeud - From my understanding, she went through a period of doubts about her faith but clung to it in the end. Your ultimate point stand up to this objection though because if it really was her faith that she was known for, then we would have known that with certainty rather than knowing about the work she did in India.
@saintvi - haha I said the same thing (only with more words) before seeing what you wrote.
they need to get over themselves! Let the lady have her stamp!!!
I vote for Giant Spaghetti Monster being featured on postage stamps instead.
Sure!
You know what, I generally don’t get my feathers ruffled in regards to stuff like this but if the freaking Simpsons can get on a blasted stamp, Mother Teresa should.
And to think ..the darker side of Mother Teresa?
Seriously?
Do these people even know what they are talking about? grr…grishyly grr…
anywho…
On a lighter note…something to think about….
Saints are just sinners who tried harder.
YES!! It is like the atheists expect that faith people can’t possibly do good works while they will argue that non-faith people can do good works. PEOPLE can do good works, religious or not.
yes. i think anyone can be or should be: even you or me. its just a stamp
i’m an atheist and i think this is ridiculous. of course she is known for her humanitarian work, who cares if she did it with a religious background. i can see why it might be bending the usps guidelines, but nothing to get all worked up about.
She deserves it. For all the work she had done for India. For her kindness.
I didn’t even know that she was a nun or a Catholic.
I did, however, know what she did.
IN YO FACE, ATHEIST PEEPS!
Yes, why not? Because you think she was responsible for some religious shit? I’m sorry but her image and her name are linked to her humanitarian work and efforts. I’m an atheist and I have no objection.
@GeoCachingFan - yes, because we’re all the same and you’re just so damn perfect. I could say the same about religious people but guess what, I don’t. Idiot.
Who uses stamps anymore?
I don’t believe in God. I believe in separation of church and state. That being said, I think that Mother Teresa is an EXCELLENT candidate for a postage stamp! These atheist protesters make the rest of us look like morons.
I don’t think its hurting anything. If anything Mother Theresa is a reminder of the kindness and love in the world. I think the stamp is a good reminder to everyone of the potential the world has to be an example of goodness.
It doesn’t matter what religion she is (although I may be somewhat bias because I am a Roman Catholic by Faith)
i don’t think I would care if she as Baptist or Jewish or whatever- she did a lot of good to this world and I would like to have her on a stamp to remember what good I can do too.
haha.
wow. this is long. lol.
@mulleina - I believe in separation of Church and state too- but I also am a strong believer in God. I think that putting religion in state keeps out freedom of religion.
Although I think there great morals to religion, I think a lot of them are common sense and written on the heart.
sorry, your statement just got me thinking about my own beliefs. I know this is off topic with the stamp though. You just got me thinking.
thanks.
okay. I just have to go on a tangent because I’m tired of people being judged by religion.
I am a devout Roman Catholic. This is what I believe:
All people are good. All people are made to be good.
You can be athiest and STILL be good and do good works because God made you in His Image and Likeness regardless if you chose to believe in Him or not. There is something called natural law written in our hearts. We can chose to go against, and ignore it.
God does not throw people into hell. We throw ourselves into hell when we chose to reject him and go against him. That is why even at the last moments in death, a murderer can get to Heaven. He can say, “I’m sorry, God.” and chose God at the last minute and get to Heaven. God is all knowing and all forgiving. His Mercy is endless.
I’m probably being way annoying, but I’m tired of people being judged by their religion. All people are good. I chose the Roman Catholic Faith because I believe it teaches the fullness of truth and spirituality. I do not believe that you have to be any particular religion or race or whatever to get to Heaven. I do not believe you have to be of any particular faith to be on a stamp or do good works. I believe you have to love God and chose to follow him. Good works are a reflection of our love for God in humanity… even if we say we don’t believe in God.
I hope I’m making sense.
I regret if I have annoyed anyone or taken up space and wasted it by not making sense.
I recognise if this should be a blog entry, but I believe that from the above comments, that this follows the discussion of whether or not Mother Theresa should be on a stamp or not. Sorry if this is just me venting and rambling.
okay. I’m done. The End.
i didn’t know she was catholic. atheism is a “religion” of intolerance! how come no one sees this?
What the hell is a stamp?
why not? she’s done a lot more than those mofos put together!
Religion aside, she did do many good things for humanity, and think she does deserve a stamp image.
Absolutely.
Surprised it hasn’t already been done.
yes…
she is really a special person in my heart..
@whitetrashpoet - I totally agree.
i like it. we should all try to b more like her and christ.austin
I don’t see why she shouldn’t be. Plenty of people who were never known for religious or humanitarian work have been on stamps. So have many cartoon characters. Some people just need to get over such silly, unimportant things.
@polishswede - now this is a sensible reply
Richard Dawkins blares on his website that he is sending aid to the earthquake victims of Port-au-Prince, and “Atheists have a heart, too”. Christopher Hitchens hopes Mother Theresa is in hell, where she deserves. Of course. That makes it all plain as day. If you help the hungry and homeless, it’s good. If you do it in the name of God, it’s bad. One thing can be said–the gap in their logic isn’t the result of a God-delusion.
@ANTN - this was my morning laugh–thank you
Yes. In this case I think atheists are being dumb. They’re like the feminists that have fits over men opening doors for women. It’s just lame!
@wrybreadspread - lolol glad to be of assistance
@GeoCachingFan - -15 points: generalization. an acceptable answer would have been: “fundamentalists (of any stripe) are idiots…”
jeezus, do people have nothing of significance in their life that they need to piss and moan about this woman being put on a frickin’ stamp???? Maybe they could put a picture of her with a Marlboro dangling from her mouth to dim down her holiness . . . I’m not Catholic and not religious, but as you can tell, this sort of thing annoys the crap outta me.
@GeoCachingFan - excuse me. i’m an atheist. AND i think mother teresa deserves to be on a stamp.
Sure.
