18 Year Old Making Out With 14 Year Old
Two 18 year old high school baseball players have been arrested for “making out” with girls that were 14 and 15 years old.
The girls told police that it was consensual. But the guys were charged with “lewd battery” and one of the guys is going to be charged with “lewd molestation” (This is probably the one making out with the 14 year old). Here is the link: Link

I don’t think it’s right, because at 14 and 15, the girls were probably very naive and were being taken advantage of, but those charges will be on the 18 year-olds’ records forever now, and if it was consensual, that isn’t right. That affects their whole future, and they weren’t even doing anything the girls didn’t want them to.

The media always blows things out of proportion. I knew a lot of girls in high school that were freshmen and dating seniors or guys that were freshmen in college. I mean, sure it was scandalous. But no one thought of it as criminal.
In HS it is not that uncommon for seniors to date freshmen it really should be judged on a case by case basis because sometimes you’ll get a freshman that’s really mature for their age and not just physically but other times you know the kid is in over their head. If the roles were reversed would it have been an issue?
At first glance, I’d say yes. When I think about it though, I dated guys when I was underage that were 17 who then turned 18 while we were still together. So, I don’t think the circumstance is always bad, though I know in some cases it definitely can be a problem.

I’ve been in this situation where my boyfriend was 19 and I was 15 at the time. Personally, I think that society is advancing way faster than the human body is. Two generations ago women were expected to be married and starting a family by 17 … I don’t know whether it should be criminal or not. I could see if the girls were 13 … 12 … but 14 and 15? The girls are old enough to make the decision.

Um, I made out with an 18 year old when I was 15. So I think we know where I stand. It’s not the most ideal situation, but especially in a high school setting, any range of ages can mix from about 13 to 19.

As a parent, I’m not that thrilled with the idea of 14-15 year old girls making out with 18 year old boys, but I think it’s a little over the top for these boys to be charged with lewd molestation. I guess my definition of “molestation” differs from others. They were kissing.

When I was 14, I dated an 18yo I met my first year in high school. No one questioned our ages; they were more worried about race. That was in 1972. I knew girls who were married at age 14! Our collective attitudes have certainly changed. If the girls gave their consent, then that should have been taken into consideration, but it obviously isn’t. Too many people become outraged over appearances. Many of your readers have it right – each case involves individuals, but the law makes such differences moot. Texas allows a relationship between an 18yo and a 16yo if they began the relationship prior to the elder’s 18th birthday. So many details! I got involved in such a case, and ended up counseling the 18yo male to end the relationship, or wait 4 years for the girl to become adult. He disappeared instead. (We live an hour from the border.)

Uh, my boyfriend and I are a two year difference, but for about 2 months he was 18 and I was 15.
It’s cases like this that caused one of my boyfriends to break up with me. We were both still in high school. I think it is unfortunate that these boys might face living as sexual predators for the rest of their lives. It would be one thing if the girls were 12 or 13, but these girls probably went to the same school.

Back when i was in school (so long ago) there were several girls going out with 24 year olds. Weather it was just talk to be popular or actually true ill never know but I did have a friend of mine try to set me up with someone much older than me. Didn’t work out because evidentally I was too “immature”. Heck I was a kid.
It used to be that a rapist could get 50 years in prison even for statutory rape. At least we are not congratulating these young men. I hope the parents provide proper counseling for their daughters and sons.

That wouldn’t happen here if the girls said that they consented. We have a rule about kids 14 years of age and older that if there is 5 years or less between them in age it’s considered a peer relationship.

Within five years (younger, of course) if the partner is 18 or older is the law in New York state. 14 and 15 are within five years of 18, so by the laws where I live and how I grew up, it’s NOT criminal and they definitely shouldn’t have been arrested.

@haloed - You know, about the hitting puberty thing… I know some girls don’t physically mature till 14-16. But other girls start as early as nine. That’s when I hit puberty. So the girls may have already been physically developed… But if they still looked like little girls, then yeah, I would find it creepy for the guys to be attracted to them.

I think it is wrong actually! I mean when you’re 14 you’re vulnerable to everything, you don’t know yourself too well, and you’re still immature (even if you were more mature than other 14yr olds). So at that point, 18 IS too old. Because when you’re 18 you’re hormones are all over the place, you’re figuring out who you are, but still follow the advice of your peers, and don’t really care about consequences.

I think this is ridiculous. I am 16 dating a 32 year old, and most people, including my parents , don’t agree with it, but, what can they do? I’ve been with him for going on 3 years now. At first nobody liked it because my parents and this guy were best friends, and my dad has a problem with me dating somebody that’s older than he is, he’s only 29, but they got over it. It’s my life. I do think if the roles were reversed I would not date a 16 year old, nor would I ever want my kids datng a 32 year old at such a young age. This could very well prevent a young lady from attending the Jr./Sr. Prom all 4-years of her high school. For those girls who are quite mature at the age of 14-15, there is not a whole lot of difference in their being 17-18 . . . As far as boys??? . . . Well, boys will be boys. In some foreign countries the girl only has to be alone in a room with a male who is at the age considered to be an adult . . . You don’t even have to touch her. Should the U.S.A. be like that also? Will a Court of Law have to dictate the different levels of so-called, “Making Out?” . . . It really looks like the U. S. Supreme Court has a tremendous amount of work to do on this stuff . . . Really.

i personally think this is just obsurd. why can’t an 18 year old “make-out” with a 14 year old, but my parents who are 13 years apart… can get married, and “make-out”
i understand that at 14 years of age, you arent as mature, and you may not be able to make the “right” decisions… but if the girls put themselves in a situation in which they’re around with older boys to begin with, then “making-out” with them is something that they should take the consequences for… without parental support, or a police investigation.

my exboyfriend was 18 while i was 15, and we did a lot more than make out… i don’t think it’s wrong at all. I think that’s just people underestimating the maturity of some teenagers.

It seems a lot of your viewers think it’s not a serious matter! What skewed values we have today! The police were right to charge them with a criminal matter! As the father of two girls, I would have considered any older guy a criminal who tried to mess with them sexually!
14 year olds are still too young to be making out with 18 year olds. I will be 18 in nine months and i would never date anyone under 16.
Its a rough question. I mean it is primarily the parents fault, but then again there has to be a law somewhere… where do we draw the line, what age, what age difference, how young is too young, and to do what? I almost agree with the law. There needs to be one and I feel at 18 one is old enough to understand why a law needs to be in place and the consequenses of it. If that makes any sense.

no, there was a guy i went to high school with that got charged for doing the same thing. i dont remember the exact charge he caught, but he ended up killing himself because he couldn’t stand being labeled as a sex offender.

the laws r there for a reason, the matter is not that the guys r 18, the matter is that they are consider adults. yes its only few years diff, but the law have to draw the line somewhere. I am sure many would have a different opinion if the ” adult” is 28 instead of 18. but they are both adults. thus, the charges.

Again, who are you to say that he has no business kissing a girl? And are you saying a guy can’t kiss a girl without doing something more with her, because that’s a definite lie. It might be “wrong”, but it’s not enough to be put into jail. I don’t see anything wrong with it, so why should he? Kissing is not a crime, if he did something more with her, then it would be a different story, but he didn’t. We can speculate what could have happened, but you can’t put someone to jail based on speculations.
