  • Your Xanga Profile Pic

I had a conversation on twitter with TheBigshowatud and we were talking about Scrambledmegsntoast.

Here is her profile pic on xanga:

I saw her real photo on twitter and I was surprised to see she was an attractive woman.  I made some sort of comment about looking at her profile pic and thinking she was probably not attractive.  Bigshow mentioned, “no, she’s attractive. i thought the same thing, too.

In fact, I was thinking she was also black based on her profile pic.  I guess I always assume that if someone uses a fake profile pic, then he or she must be not very attractive.

Do you assume a person is ugly if they use a fake profile pic?

  • No.  I just assume they don’t want their face seen.

  • Not necessarily. They may just not want people to see what they look like for privacy reasons. That’s what I usually assume. They want to hide their identity.

  • Lol, you use a fake profile pic. ;)

  • No not really…. some people just want to be private….

  • No, I assume they’re real.

  • Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  I’m trying to assume less.

  • a lot of the time, i assume they’re insecure. mostly because i’m part of the weight loss community here and a lot of girls post “thinspo” for their profile pics.

other times, i’ll just assume they don’t want to be seen. you can never be too careful on the internet.

  • I don’t think so, considering I use a fake profile picture and I prefer to consider myself as average instead of unattractive.

  • No. I just think that they must not want people to be able to identify them.

You cant say that I am ugly. I don’t even have an foto of a person in mine. =P

  • I’m having an idiot day. I saw this in my universal inbox and immediately thought, “What?? Why did Dan make a post about my profile pic?”

    Hi, I’m an idiot.
But no, I don’t assume that. I just assume they don’t want to have an exact association with their blog – say I knew scrambledmegs in real life, Googled her, found the Xanga, and went hmmm….could this be Meg? Well, can’t say for sure, don’t see her picture….etc. Know what I mean?

  • I am the NUMBER ONE BEST looking person on xanga!!!

  • I do, yeah.  Or very private and mysterious.

  • I’ve seen moar instances of fakes hiding behind a “real” picture… i think.. than UGLY people hiding behind a videogame-related one

  • What, you thought I was ugly because you thought I wa black? That’s so racist! Haha crazy. You and Matt should know that in my Twitter picture, I am actually the one on the left :-p

  • sometimes.  depends on what i read.  or if they’re thinspo

  • Well, I know I do. Lol

  • naw, that would make me shallow =P

  • I don’t really think about it so much, unless I really grew a friendship with them. Then, I’ll eithe ask for their pictures or visualize what they look like.

  • Nah, I just assume their priority is their anonymity/privacy

  • LOL!  Well, in your case, this applies perfectly.

And yes, that is me in the profile pic.  Fo’ shizzle.

  • Yes! That’s why they do it.

  • I just assume they’d like some anonymity.

  • No, I don’t assume someone is ugly if they don’t put up a picture actually I have found just the opposite to be true more often than not. Of course I’m sure there are times when people try to hide their looks because they are not attractive but in most cases when I actually get to know someone I find that the more attractive someone is in real life the less likely they are to use their own photo. I guess it’s hard to be taken seriously as a writer if people are awed by your hotness. I tend to swap out my profile pictures randomly sometimes showing me or my grandbaby or just my keyboard. I’m not hot at all unless you’re into the grandmotherly types. Changing to pic of me just so you know what I mean.

  • No. Maybe they don’t want creepers?

  • @scrambledmegsntoast - For some reason, I expected you to be attractive because you used Zoe Payne as your avatar.

  • I can understand why someone wouldn’t want to use a picture of themselves on the internet. Especially attractive women. I don’t have a problem with it. I don’t think any lady stalkers are gonna want to follow around my ugly mug.

<—– This is what I actually look like. I’m a bald albino who likes the color blue and has an issue with gravity.

  • They may just  want be priviate. But I more like the real picture.

  • Meg is ghetto wit it!

  • @NikBv - shut yo black ass up.

  • I remembered one time she used her real pic to comment on one of my pulses.  It was surprising considering I’m used to the WoW-esque version of her.  Though I never thought she would’ve been black based on the pic.  Of course, I didn’t expect Queen_of_you_188 to be black based off of all her profiles pics either, but I was wrong there.  As for me, I just like using fake profile pics.  I thought about using a profile pic of me, and I may do so in the future.

  • No, I just figure they prefer not to have a bunch of weird bloggers looking at them.

Yeah Dan, why do you use a fake profile picture?

  • Sometimes. Depends on what the fake profile picture is.

Or they’re just private and don’t want their picture on the internet?

  • the way you worded that made it sound like you think black people aren’t attractive.

  • well,  you know what happens when we assume dont you? >=]

  • No. I generally assume they don’t want coworkers, family, teachers, etc. finding their blog. Love the irony!

  • Nope

For the record, I am trying to maintain my privacy since my blog is of a sensitive personal nature. Later on, I may replace my profile picture with an actual picture of myself.

  • Maybe they just don’t want to make the rest of us feel bad by showing off their incredible beauty.

    -sigh-

  • I believe people who use  fake pictures are scared that people’ll know what they look like. or insecure of what they look like. in truth, I believe everyone is beautiful in some form. Just people don’t know what it looks like because beauty comes from the inside. [;

  • I don’t think that at all; I assume they just want privacy or to put up another picture they like that represents them in some way.  I have done both; I like the anonymous ones better.

  • No. Some people want privacy & I can understand that. I didnt upload pics online until I was 17 & I never post anything suggestive but that’s my OWN choice. I mostly take pics from the shoulders up. You may think those party pics are cool or innocent but years down the road when people send them out with fake messages (or even on softcore sites), they comeback to haunt you.

  • That’s funny considering we saw you on XTV and you look nothing like the picture you use in the top left corner of your blog. You’re like 50, don’t lie.

  • Yes, but it is transferrence. I am ugly to me, and therefore  I use various pictures, and never a photo of me.

  • That would entirely depend on the person. I usually initially think…

    A) They’re unattractive.
    B) They have little self-confidence (they may or may not be attractive in this case, but THEY at least don’t find themselves attractive).
    C) They wish to remain anonymous.

Once I get to know the person (if that’s the case), I may form a different opinion about them, based on their personalities.

  • hahaha…I haven’t really thought about it.  And I thought I was over analytical. But I am butt ugly so there may be some logic to it.  Seriously, I think other comments are right.  Some people like to be more private.  Personally and in all seriousness…I just love art and I think I can be more expressive with art as my profile pic than I could be with my limited personal picture profile pics.  I do the same thing on FB.

  • No, I always assume they are at least twice as good-looking as me if they use a false pic. I am proven right every time. Hollowtendencies is a prime example of that. Beautiful, beautiful lady!

  • I’ve never thought that before. o Ao

  • Sometimes, probably. But not always. I, as you can see, don’t have a real picture of me. Whether or not i’m attractive.. I leave that up to other people. But the reason I use a fake picture is because what I write in my blog is usually stuff I don’t want people who know me to read, not because I feel I’m unattractive. It’s where I say the things that I can’t say to the people around me. If I had a real picture, I’d risk someone I know coming across it and knowing it’s me (I know chances of this are slim, but it’s a risk I don’t want to take).

That said, i do still assume a lot of people are unattractive when I see fake profile pictures. haha

  • No, I assume it’s for privacy reasons.

  • I always assume it’s a privacy thing

  • I usually assume they’re self conscious or they have low self esteem.
Speaking of, I need to change my profile pic….

  • Assume makes an ASS out of U and ME. Come on Dan.

  • Nope I just assume that they want some privacy (in this case, their identity).

  • Haha, the only time I’d assume that, as mean as it is to say, is if it was a rather erotic blog they write.

  • Nah, I just assume that they value their privacy.

  • I wouldn’t consider them ugly, just that they like writing with anonymity.

  • Only the annoying ones.

  • It’s funny… I never thought about their looks before, but I make huge assumptions about personalities.  For instance, I think most people who blog are introverts. Most extroverts need face to face time with people.

I could be wrong…. could be wrong.

  • I used a Batman picture for a while, and I think I’m rather average.

  • I don’t care either way.

  • Are you ugly?  Are we on here for looks?  I’m here to blog personally and really don’t care what anyone looks like but more what they have to say.  If I wanted pretty people, I would pick up a magazine or turn on the tv.

  • I usually do. .__________.

    honestly

  • @wishtoremainunknown - Assume makes an ASS out of U and ME. Come on Dan.

And you must be one ugly bitch.

Unless, of course, you’re anthropomorphic blogging piano keys.

  • @TheSmokeMonster - The hands in the picture are mine. The same hands the play the piano type on the keyboard. Nice picture of you, too.

  • I asuume people are simply using a photo they like.  I am a short, chunky, old gray haored granny so all of that is he handsome or is she pretty i sno longer a big deal.  It is wheather or not I enjoy thier blog.

  • I usually assume they’re the type of person who’s not usually around cameras…

  • No, I usually assume they have a stronger case of paranoia about exposure online than I do. :P
    ~V

  • Yes and no. It pops through my head, but I also have to consider that a lot of people just don’t want their real life friends to see/know they have a Xanga.

  • Giggle!!!  Well, as you can see, I don’t care if cyber-stalkers chase me down the street.  I have enough trouble eluding the real-life nut-jobs.   Hugs from Asia,  ~ Sil

  • no, not at all. just because someone post up an attractive picture of themselves, doesn’t necessarily mean they are attractive in person. Pictures can still be deceiving. I gather the person from their writing

  • No. I assume they either are fooling around with their profile picture or they just want something else up. I put up random photos that I think are funny.

  • I don’t put much thought into it, really.  But I hope people don’t think that…  That means people think I’m ugly

And SSX is a pretty legit game.

  • No, I just assume they’re a big fan of whatever the picture is of.

…unless they’re actually trying to pass off as another person, like those Xangans who pretend they’re some random bikini model and beg for compliments.

  • hahaha.  i used to post up fake, funny pictures.  people actually believed i was some fugly, bucktooth old woman who pops her head out from nowhere in front of a nice, clear blue sky.

  • I don’t read too much into the profile pic thing…

  • Just means that they:

    a) aren’t confident with their looks
    b) want privacy

    -or-

    c) aren’t complete photo whores like me.

  • if someone has an anime girl for their picture, I assume they’re an ugly, fat white chick. :p mostly because I know a lot of ugly, fat white chicks who have anime girls for their profile pictures.

  • i echo the majority of comments…must be privacy issues…

  • I wouldn’t think the person is ugly or attractive, but I’d just wonder why this person has decided to not use a real picture. For the longest time I never used a personal picture and then one day I did and I got flooded with compliments. It was a bit surreal. I wanted people to read what I wrote and not think of it in terms of how I look. To be honest, I actually wish I never used a personal picture :

  • Some people wear veils because they’re physically unattractive.

Some people wear veils because they’re physically attractive.

  • uhm… where do masks fall on this spectrum?

  • I assume they don’t have an appearance.

I mean you, I thought you were just a cartoon man in a chair, I really did. It never occurred to me that you had an actual real face.

  • I tend to think, that, like me, they might want to remain anonymous. Never crossed my mind to think they’d be unattractive, or black. *shrugs*

  • Yes acctually, I do..

  • Oh… I used fake pictures for my profile picture because the real me is damn ugly.  One probably ended up having heart attacks if they saw my real photo.

  • Before I used to think that way but not until I’ve met some who totally proved me wrong so now, it’s not an issue for me anymore.

  • I’ve never really considered why anybody uses the profile pic they choose. For myself, I just figured I’d portray myself in a way that expresses who I am.

  • they’re just privatei guess.

  • You’re using a fake profile photo and you’re asking why people are using fake profile photo?

  • @RestlessButterfly - You accused some people of using fake photos and you’re using fake photos yourself? What a hypocrite. By the way, I don’t need to use fake topless photos for attention to my blogs. That’s for whores like you.

  • Wouldn’t you rather see Fozzie Bear than some dude smilling back at you? As long as you like Dilbert, Snoopy, Blondie, or a good romance novel, who cares what the author looks like? It doesn’t really matter to me either what anybody else really looks like. As long as they are interesting and not just playing the xanga traffic game.

  • Nah, those people just want to have privacy.

  • No. Some just want shiny shoes.

Seriously, many times prople will just use a “fake” profile pic because they can say things anonymously a lot better.

  • Why would I hide this smile?

  • No I think it comes down to individual creativeness.

  • Sometimes I’ve thought that…but a lot of times, people just don’t want to be seen…they truly want to be anonymous out here on the interwebz.

  • Waitaminute, Dan. Are you saying that you think you’re ugly? Or black?

  • nope. I assume they want to remain private.

  • I can’t speak for everyone, but my reason for not posting a profile picture of my face is so I don’t attract traffic for the wrong reasons. I want people to be more interested in the content of my writing than whether they consider me ‘hot’ or not.

I mean, as a woman, there’s a LOT more to me than my looks. And I like it when people notice that.

  • I don’t really find myself ugly..and to be honest I don’t know why I haven’t put a picture of myself up.

  • hahaha noo maybe somtimes… my prof pic is me :) have a good onee

  • Just you (j/k but couldn’t resist)

  • No, I just think they don’t want people to know exactly who they are, which is fine.

  • Usually think they are insecure.  Many attractive people are insecure so I don’t assume that.  Why would anyone hide their face online?  I would think there would be more incentive to hide your face in public if it’s privacy reasoning.

  • I don’t assume anything. I just leave it up to their tastes. It’s not like it’s a dating site or anything. :P

  • No. I just think they want to keep their identity hidden…

  • if it’s not a anime profile pic. then I don’t assume they’re ugly. no offense anime profile pic xangans.

  • I assume they are worthwhile

  • Maybe not photogenic.   At least that’s the case with me.  It’s easier to find pics that resemble me.

  • Going with the group; I just assume they want their privacy.  I always assumed @scrambledmegsntoast - was pretty, actually.

  • no. i like it better when they don’t show it. much more mysterious and intruiging.

  • if the picture is of a different, attractive person, yes.

  • and btw, meg is gorgeous. she used to have a photo of herself in her photoblog, at least back when she had her old blog. i think it’s pretty cool that she’s attractive but she still chooses to put up a different kind of picture.

  • I use a non-person profile pic because I write a lot of very personal stuff on my blog and prefer to remain anonymous.  Also because I would prefer other people not perform any kind of calculation about my attractiveness one way or the other.  This last is something men probably find hard to understand but women understand instinctively.

  • yep I must be a fugler

  • I’m the opposite actually. When I see a fake picture, I visualize what they look like by how they type and the things they say. The more beautiful the personality, the prettier I think they might be on a real picture. Usually I just fool myself and it turns out those people are not attractive at all. Btw, you got me wondering what she looks like now. Oh and one more thing.. a lot of people who look really good on their real pic, turn out to be less attractive than you’d think they are. They put their best pics online, and anyone can look good if they try hard enough with the lights and all.

  • No, I just assume that they want to be safe and not show the world their picture — kind of like myself. I consider myself attractive, I’m just not much on putting my pic for everyone to see. Always afraid some creepo will find out who I am.

  • no, I just assume it’s a privacy thing

  • I try to judge a person’s degree of attractiveness on his or her output in the blog rather than such  superficial criterion as personal physical appearance.  Although Abraham Lincoln was retuted to have turned down a man for an important position.  When someone said that wasn’t fair because the man was not responsible for his face, Lincoln replied, “Every man over forty is responsible for his face!”

  • I feel less judged when anonymous.

  • No, I assume it’s a privacy thing, or they just like the picture.

  • I used to!  Now i just assume that that either think they are unattractive and are embarrassed to show a picture of themselves or they just don’t want their face over the internet. I have a facebook and I don’t add people unless they have a picture..

  • yeah I do! I’m surprised so many other people don’t. My friends think the same way. If there is a guy with a fake profile picture talking to them on facebook they assume he is hiding something.

  • watchutalkinaboutwillis?

  • you’re saying “black” = “unattractive”?

  • No i just assume that they are smart about not putting all their junk out there

  • No. Sometimes I think people post up an ugly picture on their profile to see who’s worthy to converse with… Society has been so obsessed with beauty that sometimes, people need to over look the physical attributes and concentrate more on matters of the heart…

  • Yes. I usually would assume that they are unattractive.. or they just want privacy!

You use a fake profile picture.. Does that mean your ugly? LOL

  • when they use anime as their picture,  I assume they are somewhat unattractive. Otherwise, no.

  • nope, like myself, i just assume that they want to remain a little bit more anonymous for privacy reasons.

i used to have a blog when i was much younger that my profile picture was in. one day i was unknowingly put on the homepage and i received a bunch of messages that made me really uncomfortable, especially since the content of my blog was also not as anonymous as it could have been.

Maybe I’ll change my profile picture in the future, but for now, I like having another picture in its place. it just makes me feel a little safer.

  • I usually presume it’s more of an insecurity reason. And sometimes I don’t presume anything at all.

  • No, I think they just want privacy. I use real pictures of myself but I don’t like to show my face much on the world wide web.

Besides, if every good looking person would show their faces on here, people would get the stereotype that they are trying to show off or gain more subscriptions out of it.

  • I think that way sometimes too, but I know that it isn’t always right. Others might not want to be seen for privacy reasons, but I also think that people might use other pictures because those pictures are more expressive than a portrait. If someone sees you in a picture, they’ll judge you and make a lot of assumptions (I’m not saying that all people are bad and judgmental, but you do make assumptions, no matter who you are!) A non-portrait picture is something the user CHOOSES, so he/she can be judged by something they have more control over. At the very least, learning something like “this person likes Cyanide and Happiness comics, which implies a type of sense of humor” is more interesting/unique than seeing them and thinking, “Ah, white male, probably middle-upper class, decently attractive….”

My profile picture is me with a ridiculous faux-hawk which I practically never have. My reasoning is that people who aren’t deterred by my unusual, rebellious-looking picture might be more open minded to my random ideas. Also, I think it’s kind of funny that it’s a picture of me but is misleading at the same time. Since any picture of me (or anyone) is probably going to be misleading, I might as well make it as ridiculous as possible– no point in being misjudged on an accurate picture when you can be misjudged for a crazy, inaccurate one.

  • I don’t even have a picture. So what do you think of that? Anyways, I do think like that sometimes depending on their default pic. As long as it is an ugly picture of anything, then sometimes you assume the same for them. Lol! Most of the time I don’t care though. They can put whatever picture they want.  As some people said, it could be for privacy reason, to lazy to put anything, or they just want to be as free  as they could be when writing, without anyone knowing the identity behind the mask.

  • I actually used to use fake profile pictures on a lot of sites (even previous Xanga sites).  It’s because I wasn’t confident in myself; I just now started thinking I was halfway attractive.  Now, no, I’m not saying that’s everybody’s situation.  That was just the reason I used to use them.

I don’t assume they’re ugly right away, especially if it’s a picture of an animal, cute character, fun icon, etc.  However, if it’s a picture of an oversexified character, a Playboy model, Heidi Montag, or an icon that says things such as “I Love Sluts” or “I’d Hit That”, etc… well, it’s usually a thought that crosses my mind.

It all depends on what your picture is!

    – KtMc

  • Sometimes, but I don’t really think about it.

My profile pic is usually one of my interests.

  • When someone has an anime picture, I assume they’re Asian. When they turn out to be black, white or something else, I’m surprised.

  • Nah. People probably use a fake profile pic if they either A) wish to be anonymous (like me), B) Have low self-esteem about their appearance regardless of the fact that they may or may not be attractive, or C) Don’t have a camera to take a picture of themselves?

  • I just assume they want to be anonymous.

  • No, says the girl with a doodle as a profile pic.

  • No…outward attractiveness doesn’t mean anything.  I prefer to get to know people through what they have to say through their writing…physical attractiveness has nothing to do with that.  I want to get to know the ‘real’ them.  I think that is sometimes easier without knowing what they look like.  I started blogging toward the end of my abusive marriage and i just wanted to be anonymous.  i sometimes say things in my blog i would not say out loud in my current surroundings except to my best friend. I don’t want someone who knows either me or him or any of my children to stumble across my pic, find my blog, and read my stuff.

  • I do assume that they’re ugly, or at least under the impression that they are.

  • aww that’s mean. I would think she doesnt use a real picture because she doesnt want people to know who she is or maybe get to know her on the inside and not make first impressions based on her looks.

  • I don’t want my image to influence how people read what I write.

  • no, not right away.

  • I assume there’s a human being on the other side of the glass. Beyond that, not much else.

Would it make sense to use one’s countenance when a more appropriate expression of self can be made with another image?

  • no, i dont think so, maybe im just saying this cuz i dont have a real profile pic of me.

but i dont have a real pic cuz i dont want ppl that i know, knowing that i have a xanga and also xanga is open to wayyy too many ppl, i dont want my face to be seen by complete strangers that i dont talk too…whereas on my facebook that i have…i do have an actual pic of cuz there i hang out with and talk to ppl on regular basis.

  • personally I don’t understand why anyone would use their real picture.

I mean serriously why would you want everyone you don’t know to know what you look like? so they can stop you on the street be all “sup happinessinacup I liked your blog today..Yadda, yadda yadda ” or some other really creepy scenario of creepiness.

  • i dont know. i think that it depends on what kind of fake profile picture they are using…

  • Do you picture me ugly? haha.

  • No, I just assume they really like the content of their picture.

  • Depends on the pic!

  • i have a picture of jennifer connelly as my profile pic, not because i am jennifer connelly, but because i want my site to be untraceable.  i don’t want people to know who i am.  i also don’t have my full name on my site for that reason.  i can’t have certain people, such as my students, finding and reading my blog.

i’ve also been told that i kinda look like jennifer connelly.

  • Perhaps the profile pic is one the user simply picked to see how the uploading process worked, and never bothered to change?  Look left.

  • well what if there is no profile pic?

  • I just assume that they don’t want their photo on the net for all to see.  I’m anonymous so, obviously, it makes no sense to post a picture of my real life self on my anonymous blog.  I’m not ugly but I’m not a perfect 10 either.

  • What about your picture? Pony up.

  • Yeah I’ve seen those pics of Megan too. She’s pretty fine.

  • @ccarothers - same here.  I figured if they have a different picture up it’s because they just want to remain private/anonymous.  At least that’s what I do.

  • I never really thought about it.  I don’t have my own photo because I don’t want people I know in real life that this is my blog….

  • I try not to assume that anyone is ugly.

  • Not really. Maybe they just don’t want to be seen?

  • No, not at all.  I don’t want my face seen sheerly for privacy purposes.  However, I do make online people and make them look like me and take screenshots and use those as my pic.  That’s what I did for my current and last pic.

  • No but generally I would not start a xanga – friendship with them.  I would assume that if they hide their face they may be fakes.

  • If this is a magor issue, wait till you get to the real world. Who really gives a crap

  • And your profile pic is fake so what does that say about you?

  • No.  But in my case it is true.

  • No. I just assume they don’t want people creeping on their pictures.

  • No. I just assume they don’t want to be judged based on how they look.

  • Yea, I do assume it immediately. But, then I think well they probably just want to keep their identity a secret. They probably don’t want people they know in real life to see their blog.

  • Now that I think of it, I to  tend to assume no picture means they are ugly.

But I’d rate myself an 8 out of 10 and I still wear a mask.

  • ITS NOT HER FACE THATS UGLY, MAN…..

  • ooooh, i was thinking about another thing – about assuming…

Googling Patients: Should Psychiatrists Research Cases Online?

what if someone only knew you from the comments you’ve left around the ether?

  • i dont think i am ugly? lol i just would rather y’all not know. plus, i really use xanga for personal stuff, i don’t want it linked to ANYTHING professional!

*edit: although i do love hamburgers.

  • I usually think theyre overweight
