Absolutely. Everyone knows by now that tobacco products are full of carcinogens. Why anyone would purposefully put those things into their body when there’s a baby growing inside it is beyond me.
This is a tough one. I personally wouldn’t smoke while pregnant but then again my mom said she smoked (a few times) while pregnant with me and I didn’t turn out so bad. lol
i quit cold turkey once i found out i was pregnant. from half a pack to zilch.
yes, i think one should try to be as health conscious as possible during pregnancy. But that’s just my opinion.
YES
Yes. My mom smoked while she was pregnant with me and my health is absolutely shitty. I forgive her, but it still sucks every single day.
yes
No.
YES! boooo! seen it done, sick! (the kids were A ok but still)
I believe so…:/ I wish they’d stop. 9 months is not that long if you really think about it.
That is both sad and infuriating…
I’m sure it could cause some problems for the baby.
Did your mom smoke while she was pregnant with you? That would explain a lot.
Apparently as long as the fetus is the right weight it’s a ok.
Neglect yes.
yes yes yes i think smoking should be illegal alltogether
Yes, I think pregnant women shouldn’t smoke. But it’s also a fact that if you are a heavy smoker and become pregnant, it’s not healthy to just suddenly quit cold turkey either but to decrease gradually.
@mysterygirl3000 - As a pregnant mother, I disagree. (not a smoker BTW- but don’t tell me how to run my life… pregnant or not.)
My mom smoked when she was pregnant with me (the entire 9 months, plus 2 weeks) and I had horrible respiratory problems when I was a kid.
Smoking is a God given right – if the child lives, so be it!
@dikdoktor - Glad we agree, Daddy-O. But smoke around Dezzi AFTER he is born and I will have to fucking kill you.
Absolutely!
Hell yes.
Are they really pregnant?
All I know is that my husband’s aunt chain-smoked and drank constantly while pregnant with each of her daughters. One was born sterile, one is absolutely hideous, and the youngest is drop-dead gorgeous but barely passed high school and failed every single class in her first term of college before dropping out.
So I don’t recommend it.
I think it’s wrong…not sure how I’d label it though.

@DiaryOfAPsychopath - I’m not telling u how to live ur life, just answering he question and ur argument. btw second worst argument ever, how does being pregnant makes it different? And as a smoker I find it sick and will stop at least when pregnant.
@mysterygirl3000 - Being pregnant makes you think. I have never thought about people trying to control what people do… it pisses me off. I don;t smoke… but let others tell me what to do. It’s not right- it’s my child and my body. Let me assess the risks.
well you cant expect us to want to have big babies can you??? smoking= lower birth weight= smaller baby being forced out the vag.. pshh, hola???
yes… it can cause permanent harm to your child. so can beating him (or her). so can raping him. i don’t really see a point in smoking in the first place, but i can’t see how someone fit to be a parent would continue to smoke while pregnant.
@mysterygirl3000 - You wear a mask. Is this to hide half of the brains dripping from your ear? Smoking is a natural act, it’s good for some to inhale certain substances. There are all kinds of ways of aborting kids – too bad your family fucked up and you lived.
@dikdoktor - LMAO This is the first time I have ever seen what a great dad you are going to be… Kudos (:
why even get pregnant if you can’t even put the well-being of your future child before your own urge? I also hate seeing parents smoke around their kids
@DiaryOfAPsychopath - yes, i was just reacting, that’s what we do here.. didn’t say anything specific to u except i didn’t get ur argument. why u being so defensive? we don’t have a say about other pple’s choices, which is why we debate…
@dikdoktor - shut the fuck up and learn to read, i’m a smoker too. who talked about abortion anyway? i’ll be nice and explain, i’ve seen it done (smoking while pregnant) and it didn’t hurt the kids, still i think it’s wrong.
@mysterygirl3000 - How can I not be defensive when you are saying I have the worst argument ever? Fuck you.(<- from DikDoktor) But if you have never been pregnant and you are stupid enough to slowly kill yourself by smoking, how can you say anything about those who give a shit about themselves? Fuck you. (<- from me)
@Paul_Partisan - No. Who gets pregnant now-a-days? It’s so yesterday…
@DiaryOfAPsychopath - i was insutling ur argument, not u. It was totall illogical that’s all. but i can insult u: fuck u too! Oh and “don’t tell me how to live my life boohoo”.
@mysterygirl3000 - Hahaha Wow. Well, when you learn how to type, and how to spell, let me know and come attack me properly.
@TheGildedCage - Exactly what I was going to say. :D People don’t take into account the fact that a lot of pregnancies are unplanned and therefore it’s not as though people had a plan in place to stop smoking. It’s more complicated than “just quit” once you get the positive pregnancy test. I wish it were that easy for a lot of people, but it’s not, sadly.
@Trigger821 - This statement assumes that every pregnancy is planned. Not true.
What if they’re gonna get an abortion?
How could a Mom to be do something like that? I think that should require government intervention but the Liberals will defend a woman’s right to smoke during pregnancy.
@DiaryOfAPsychopath - oh wow, attack the ideas, some people can spell but not think… so useful to the debate.
My best friend is due in June.
She went from smoking a pack a day to 3 cigarettes a day, she’s trying to quit completely.
Quitting cold turkey is worse than smoking during pregnancy…on both the mother and the baby.
When you see a pregnant woman smoking, you automatically assume she’s a shit mother…instead of figuring that hey…maybe she’s cutting back.
There is more to pregnancy and smoking…than “just quit”.
@danceswithgrammar - I think that’s why I have asthma & no one else in my family does.
Anything that endangers the child is child abuse. Period.
@Morningstarrising - I know there are unplanned pregnancy but if one decided to keep the baby, why not take a step further and start thinking about the well-being of the life growing inside of you? it’s like saying i am giving you foods because you’re stranded in the middle of a desert and is hungry but left you where you are
NO! i do not think it is a form of child abuse. DO i think it is wrong yes. I have known many people who have yried to quit smoking and it not work out well for them. I do not smoke and never have. But I feel as long as the parent is doing everything they can to try to quit and or cut back. Then that is all we can ask of them. there are alot worse things out there someone could do to a unborn child.
@RainDropPixie - that’s not true…quitting cold turkey is one of the best thing you can do for your baby if you’re pregnant. the chances of miscarriage will drop and your baby will start getting more oxygen. Unlike the mother, baby don’t go through nicotine withdrawal
@Trigger821 - I’m not saying that you shouldn’t stop smoking if you get pregnant. But doing so cold turkey actually causes more stress on the pregnancy than tapering off instead. I’d rather a pregnant mother smoke 1-2 cigarettes a day until she can wean herself off of them entirely than to put too much stress on the baby and herself by trying to quit all at once.
yes, as I think it’s a huge health-hazard, not only on yourself but definitely on the baby. I smoke and i know that as soon as I get preggers i WILL quit. No argument there.
Yes, because her actions are clearly hurting another. Maybe not abuse, but some kind of fine or misdemeanor. Some way to detract mothers from doing it.
Ok, well, in my opinion, smoking should be illegal. Also, in my opinion, no one should smoke around children, born or unborn. BUT -
As long as both smoking and abortion is legal – it can’t technically be a form of child abuse. Because the fetus is not technically a child. But thats from a legal standpoint, of course. Imo, it shouldn’t be done because its dreadfully unhealthy.
Yes, they shouldn’t smoke! They shouldn’t be selfish when they are the one who want to bring someone else in the world.
xo
it’s fetus abuse! my co-worker’s mom smoked while she was pregnant with her. her health kind of sucks.
Is it child abuse to smoke in the same home where a child lives? Same answer as OP’s question.
I quit smoking when I found out I was pregnant, as well as drinking coffee and alcohol. My baby is too delicate for me. But I will never force my views or opinion on anyone even though it breaks my heart to see a pregnant woman smoke. And yes, smoking while pregnant does hurt the baby, a little or a lot it doesn’t matter. Every mother will make her own decision.
I don’t think it’s about legality or abuse, it’s about a choice and every choice has a consequence-good or bad.
I really hate to see it. My sister is pregnant and currently smokes. It’s a sad, disturbing sight. I let her know that she needs to quit, but she insists that if she does, since the baby is now addicted to nicotine, it could put the baby in shock.
I’m not so sure about that…
At the same time, my mom smoked while pregnant with me, my brothers and my sister. We all turned out fine…
As far as your question goes, I don’t think it’s child abuse… but parents who smoke should think of their unborn child before their selves.
I think it is adult abuse when pregnant women wear tops that don’t cover them!
It’s not just the moms-to-be who should stop smoking, second-hand smoking is just as bad. It also has been proven that it’s not relaxing when a person smokes. People joke about the cake being a lie. leave the cake alone! Smoking being good in anyway shape or form is a lie.
And yes, I just read someone saying something about the poor cake..meanies! lol.
it’s fucking disgusting.
Haha, that’s how I got my middle name. (Nicole was sort of similar to nicotine.)
I smoked since I was 11 years old. I had children when I was 16, 18, and 22 years old. Each time I quit cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. Anyone who smokes while they are pregnant is indeed abusing their child.
I’ll go with a yes.
Pssh, we French do it all the time. We don’t give a damn. It’s describes how we get our lovely lisps when we talk.
Eh. That’s debatable. Drinking is a whole other issue..
child abuse? no.
a stupid choice? yes.
Of course.
That’s a very good question, so many things can affect the health of a fetus. Caffeine, liquor, lack of exercise, too much exercise, unhealthy diet, smoking, hot tub usage, being overweight or underweight, the use of certain drugs, heck even having birds, cats or reptiles in the house, and the list goes on an on. I would hope moms would try their best to do the right things when pregnant but is it abuse if she doesn’t? I suppose it’s only abuse if there are provable negative consequences to the child. Otherwise it might be neglect. (I believe that’s the standard for children who are already born whose parents face abuse charges.)
If we can say that smoking while pregnant is child abuse then we can say abortion is murder. Both (child abuse and murder) are punishable by law but, our society doesn’t really care about life in THAT strict of a sense.
FWIW — I think both are horrible.
No first the only way to have health issues with smoking is if you are a heavy smoker when your pregnant if you are already a haeavy smokers it is extremly unsafe for the aby to quit while you are pregnant becasue of the stress on your body .. And Every doctor I have been too says to just cut back to less then a ha;lf pack a day and the baby should be just fine. I think its very judgemental to say a mother is abusive based on the fact that she was already a smoker and You see her smoing while she is pregnant becasue you have no idea what ther doctor said about it or how much she is even smoking in a day.
considering smoking causes birth defects? yes
Is it legal child abuse? I doubt it (but in a custody hearing, it would be damaging). Is it moral in 2010? not imo. Was it moral in the 40s,50s,60s? We were being told lies, so the blame is on big tobacco there.
Smoking while preggers is bad.
I don’t know if it is a form of abuse or not, but I do know that a friend of mine smoked all through her pregnancy, and it worried the hell out of me. The baby was born fine. The second time she got pregnant, she done the same thing, the second child was born with horrible asthma. If I ever end up knocked up by some prick, I will switch to gum for a few months.
definently, theres no excuse for it whatsoever….
No.
@DiaryOfAPsychopath - Doctors do not tell you how to live your life, they merely give you suggestions. Especially if it involves the well-being of your child.
It’s just like any other drug. Withdrawl symptoms are the worst thing for a fetus.
No, I don’t think it’s a form of child abuse. However, that doesn’t mean that I think women who are pregnant should smoke either. I was a smoker before I got pregnant with #1. I did quit cold turkey, but go damn it is hard! And if you don’t smoke, then you will never know how hard it is. I do admit that I caved in around the 5th & 6th months and smoked about 7 – 10 cigarettes. But I felt guilty about it the rest of my pregnancy…but now, my daughter is just fine and healthy as can be. I agree that it’s not healthy for the baby and women should think about the choices they make while pregnant. But in my mind, saying that it’s child abuse is ridiculous! That’s the same as saying a woman who doesn’t take a pre-natal vitamin is committing child abuse. Which by the way, I rarely do because I can never remember to take the damn things in the morning!
Perhaps. I HATE seeing a pregnant woman smoke. My cousin smoked while she was pregnant, but luckily the baby was healthy. My fiancee’s mother smoked while she was pregnant and he had all sorts of heart complications, however.
my mother smoked thru 2 pregnancies and we are fine, except i think i could have been better endowed ! i really don’t think it’s a good idea , though.
I think it is. That’s just stupid.
Of course, why would you want to risk your child’s safety, in any fashion, just for your own wants and cravings, I don’t have an addictive personality, and I gave up cigarettes instantly, as I never felt I needed them, I just enjoyed smoking them, I’m not sure of cravings , as I never had them, but women often tell me, that child birth is the painfullest experience, any human can go through, faced with that, I’m sure you can not smoke for nine months
Do I consider it a form of child abuse? No. However, I still think that a woman shouldn’t be smoking while pregnant or nursing. I also happen to think she should try not to be around secondhand smoke either.
I am a smoker. It was INCREDIBLY hard to quit while I was pregnant with my son. Even by the end of the pregnancy, I was still having a cigarette or two a day (but I cut down from a pack a day). And I felt like a hypocrite for criticizing people who smoked throughout their entire pregnancy.
It is not healthy to smoke in general, but I disagree with smoking during pregnancy and nursing especially. Everything that goes into your body DOES affect your baby. Still, I wouldn’t call it child abuse, and I’m not going to be mean or rude to a woman who is pregnant and smoking. It is her decision, and while I disagree with it, I don’t have a right to judge it.

It’s certainly wreckless endangerment and/or neglect. A co-worker of mine smoked a pack every two days through her entire pregnancy and the baby was born weighing 3.4 lbs and had to be kept in the hospital for 6 weeks because of the complications. It’s a proven and very well known fact that smoking causes birth defects and unhealthy babies. It blows my mind that people are actually saying it’s no big deal. These people shouldn’t have children if they aren’t smart enough to know what’s bad.
Yes. I believe it is child abuse in one of the worst ways.
i don’t because even doctors are starting to tell smokers that if they just quit, it can make the fetus go into shock and die. smokers should definitely cut back, but i don’t think a cigarette now and then is bad and i don’t think that you should stop if the doctor tells you not to (i’m not a smoker, by the way)
I would definitely say it is. My twin sister and I have had complications for the last 22 years because my mom smoked during her pregnancy. My sister developed lung and respiratory problems and so did I. My sister eventually grew out of her problems but I continue to struggle every now and then. Smoking increases the chances of your child developing behavioral and learning problems, which my sister and I both developed. We were born 2 months prematurely (which most twins are born prematurely) but our birth weight was very small, we were just above 4 lbs each. I was hospitalized for 2 weeks after birth and spent a lot of time in an incubator, I dont know if that could be blamed on my mothers smoking but I am sure her smoking didnt decrease the risks of me having problems, if these were just pre-existing problems for me I am sure her smoking didnt help at all. My father also smoked during her pregnancy and we all know, second hand smoke is more harmful than direct smoking is. I love my mom but those first few years of my life were terrible and I do somewhat blame her. I had learning problems, speech impediments, eye issues, behavioral problems and a weak immune system. A baby is a precious little thing and it needs to be able to live, happily and healthy and my mother stole that away from me. She may have only smoked “a few times” but everyone in my family smokes, it needs to a joint effort to keep smoke and tobacco and tar and carbon monoxide away from pregnant women, their newborns AND their children as they are growing up. Lighting up a cigarette immediately after giving birth isnt going to help, youre still exposing your child to these harmful toxins. So yes, it is abuse in some sort of way, abuse is mistreating a child, harming them or intending to harm them. Abuse: killing your baby because you couldnt quit smoking a damn cigarette.
@Trigger821 - My OB lectured me for quitting cold turkey. He said it puts unnecessary stress on the baby…and me. You are absolutely supposed wean yourself when finding out you’re pregnant. Its the same with any addiction, even hard drugs…the withdrawal can be worse than the drug…be it caffeine or cocaine. This is not to say I condone drugs during pregnancy, but there are special rehab centers for pregnant women, and ways to safely wean off of something.
I think both smoking and drinking while pregnant are, as they both can result in significant health issues for the child.
Now that we know how dangerous smoking really is, yes I do think it is child abuse to an unborn child.
Yep.
Yes, its unacceptable in my opinion… guess it would be a bit different if you are a smoker yourself but while you are pregnant i think it should be a priority to stop smoking.
I THINK IT IS SELFISH. SOMEBODY HAD SACRIFICE A LITTLE FOR YOU TO GROW, GO TO SCHOOL,AT LEAST GIVE A FOOTING OF
SURVIVAL SKILL: MOM, DAD, THE SCHOOL SYSTEM, THE CHURCH ,THE HOSPITAL WHERE YOU WERE BORN.
GIVE SOMEBODY ELSE A CHANCE TO ENJOY LIFE, MAKE A CHOICE OF TO SMOKE OR NOT.
IF MY PARENTS HAD SMOKE CIGARETTE AND I WAS BORN WITH ANYTHING ANORMAL CONDITION .I WOULD BEEN PISS….
LOU GIVE LOVE A CHANCE.
Its stupid and irresponsible, but should it actually count as child abuse? No.
Yes.
Yeah, a form.
It is fine. Who wants to totally get fat by quitting while pregnant anyway?
Then women should give up caffeine while pregnant too. It’s also bad for an unborn child.
No, but that doesn’t mean it’s not an idiot thing to do.
Ehhh… my mom smoked with me and I was quite an above average kid. Though I did get sick a lot. Honestly, I don’t think smoking while pregnant is half as bad as smoking after the child is born. No scientific data to support that, just opinion.
Child abuse? No. Hot? Yes.
It’s definitely a bad idea. I think that it should be illegal to sell cigarettes to pregnant women, though I’m sure that, during the first trimester at least, it would be difficult to tell/enforce.
Yes. My uncle and cousin have been adopting from a large family. (My uncle had to adopt the most recent child, because the Georgia system wouldn’t let my cousin and her husband adopt more than the four they had.) Anyway, two of the children have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. I know it’s not exactly the same, but both can have serious consequences…honestly, I don’t know how any mother can smoke while she’s pregnant. Smoking around anyone is abuse, since secondhand smoke can be as dangerous or, in some cases, more dangerous than actually smoking (the cigarettes have a filter; the person inhaling your poison doesn’t have one.) But honestly…I can’t stand people who do it around someone who can’t even move or stand up for themselves…and I go up to pregnant women, take the cigarette, put it out, break it in half, grind it into the ground. Then I tell her why and leave to pray for her.
It most definitely is child abuse.
I think so. It is clear and well known that it can harm the baby. How selfish.
My mom smoked while pregnant with me and I’m perfectly healthy. No diseases, nothing long term, just healthy lungs, heart, and body =] While I do believe you should cut back your cigarette intake if not stop smoking entirely if you’re pregnant, I’m not going to judge anyone who decides they won’t change.
yes yes yes yes yes
What? Some of these comments are just insane. Of course we should smoke while we are pregnant, and drink too. While we are at it, let’s smoke some crack and eat a diet of Rainbow Skittles and Hostess treats! That’s the way to show that infant how to party! Mom’s, who’s with me?
Actually, if you are a smoker and quit cold turkey once you find out you’re pregnant it can do more harm then good. The last time my sister was pregnant the doctor told her that after the sixth month that smoking won’t cause harm other than a lower birth weight and that instead of completely quitting he told her to start weening herself off of them in the first months so her baby wouldn’t go in shock.
Yes I do.
Yes, its disgusting and there is no excuse for it.
It makes me actually want to slap the woman doing it.
Yes, it should. Look at all the studies linking health and smoking during pregnancy!
So, I’m guessing its abuse smoking around your kids since they inhale what you smoke.
I don’t agree with it. And I’ve seen plenty of people smoke while pregnant…which I find sad.
well, i would be a hypocrite if i said yes. i’ve always said in terms of abortion that i believe it’s a fetus- that is reliant on the mother to make the right choices- including the choice to bring it to term. so it would be the choice of the mother to smoke but i disagree with it and would be highly frowned upon.
my mom smoked when she was pregnant with me but in moderation. i don’t condone that, but i turned out ok (however just think how great i could have been, lol)
Yes.
Smoking while pregnant is a NO-NO. The end.
@PandaCobain - Haha… My mom smoked throughout pregnancy (with me, my twin brother, two younger brothers…) and we all turned out great, no major health issues. *shrug* Just sayin’.
@blackspiders - How much did she smoke though? i think that’s a good question… My dad and his sisters have a lot of health issues because my grandmother smoked during her pregnancies. I think it depends on genetics i suppose. Now that I think about it really.
its totally unacceptable and theres no justifying it
Absolutely and it should be illegal.
@TheLuckiestWomanEver - I don’t think smoking while pregnant causes ugliness, stupidity, or being sterile…but nice try though.
My mother smoked while she was pregnant with me, as well as did other things you probably shouldn’t do while being pregnant, and I turned out with zero health problems. I don’t believe smoking while being pregnant should be considered child abuse, because you are not abusing a child. You are damaging YOUR health, but you are doing nothing to a child because there is no child involved in the situation. A fetus maybe, but not a child. Either way, I haven’t heard of any stories of a fetus being harmed by a mother smoking. Back in the 50′s and 60′s women smoked and drank through their pregnancies and the children were born fine.

is this a rhetorical question?
@ThA_sLo_1 - Occasional smoking/drinking is probably going to cause little to no difference. But it’s common knowledge that chain-smoking and binge drinking can be detrimental, if not fatal, to an unborn child. And if someone loads their body full of toxins like that, there’s absolutely no way it will affect only their health and not that of the child that is growing inside them; the two are linked.
And yes, that can definitely affect anything from behavior/mental stability to overall health – ask any doctor.

Yes, thought I think drinking would be worse. I read that about 23 percent of women binge drink while pregnant. It doesn’t seem like that much at first, but when you think about it…it’s too many.
@ThA_sLo_1 - // Either way, I haven’t heard of any stories of a fetus being harmed by a mother smoking. //
You were rather lucky. Either that or you’re lying about your health.
yes. but of course some women do it anyways. selfish.
yes, it can jepordize the health of your child. my sister smoked through all four of her pregnancies, and 3 of them were premature, one of them had to be in the NICU for a month…. i pretty much assume its because of her smoking.
but then there are some ladies who wont even touch herbal teas while pregnant. food for thought!
in a way, yes. it counts.
hell yes. think about all the diseases the baby could get from a mother who smokes, like asthma.

@DiaryOfAPsychopath - You need to go back to debate 101. No personal insults. All credibility flies out of the window when you start acting like a kid on the playground, FYI– even though I pretty much agree with you.
YES..i wanna punch the women who do >.>
Absolutely. But, if a parent wants to be selfish there’s not much you can do about it. If I knew someone who was pregnant and still smoking with no plans to stop, and I knew where they were living, I would call DCS. No hesitation, no regrets.
I find it rather funny that so many scream “child abuse”. How many of them are the same that scream “iit’s not a child, t’s just a fetus”? Interesting that it’s a child when it suits a particular purpose, and a fetus when it fits a different purpose.
I don’t think it’s child abuse. I think it’s a bad choice, and I believe it’s forcing a choice on someone else. I loved my girls from the time I knew I was pregnant. I haven’t even gotten their ears pierced because it’s not my body and not my choice.
If people are really pro choice, then be pro choice. People have the right to choose what they are going to do with their body. I don’t have to like it, agree with it, or approve of it.
I would say so. I mean…smoke up and get cancer if that’s what you want, but you shouldn’t fuck up the child you’re caring just because you feel like it.
Some people think that it is okay. ( I live above people who think like that.)
Yes.
When I found out I was pregnant I quit cold turkey. I’ll admit I smoked 1 or 2 while pregnant from stress. But I had a friend who smoked through her entire pregnancy and each of her children had complications when they were born.
A lot of women feel it is their right to do whatever with their body when they are pregnant. I happen to feel that if you are going to choose to share your body with your baby then you need to realize that what you do impacts that baby. It is dependent on you. So, yes, I guess I would consider it abuse.
If a smoker becomes pregnant, quittings Obviously a good plan, going cold turkey Right away won’t do any good though.
I don’t think it would ever be child abuse in the legal sense because people are too afraid to tell others what to do even if it’s the right thing. But yes, I do think it’s child abuse myself.
I wouldn’t call DHS. But I definitely think it’s wrong. I haven’t personally witnessed a woman doing it in a few years, but I might just talk to her about it a bit.
@QuantumStorm - Oh yes, I’m completely lying about my health…if I were very unhealthy due to the things my mother did while I was in the womb, I would tell you all and be for your alls cause, but, the fact of the matter is, my mom smoked a pack and a half a day through out the whole pregnancy, drank alcohol on a regular basis before she found out I was in there (which wasn’t until about 4 months or so along) and did other substances. My mother was a bartender for all 9 months of pregnancy. I know there are cases of fetal alcohol syndrome, and babies being born addicted to whatever drugs the mother was on, but, it didn’t happen to me. I have no health problems at all, and have none ever due to what my mother did before I was born. My brother also endured these behaviors while in the womb, and came out with health problems unrelated to her behaviors. I don’t condone smoking or drinking or doing drugs while pregnant, but, I don’t think smoking while pregnant causes quite as many health risks as led to be believed. I don’t think if you see a woman smoking while pregnant you need to make a citizens arrest. Let her make her own choices, and you can make yours.
@ThA_sLo_1 - Your argument is faulty as you base it on personal experiences and nothing else. Just because you were lucky does not mean everyone is as well. That’s like saying that because someone survives getting hit by a semi, the rest of us shouldn’t have to worry about being hit by a semi. It’s effectively a generalization on your part, compounded by the fact that some health issues may not manifest themselves in your body until much later in life.
It’s worse than child abuse. When a woman becomes pregnant, she takes on the responsibility for another human life that’s developing within her; one that’s at its most vulnerable and dependent stage of existance. That is an awesome responsibility in itself. If a woman indulges herself in such a manner that threatens the health or viability of her baby while in that state, she commits a crime against it. Child bearing and child rearing is the central focus of all viable human society and cannot be compromised.

Nah- no unborn abuse counts.
YES
yes
yes. 100% abuse.
(the kids were A ok but still)
@DiaryOfAPsychopath - worst argument ever
I believe so…:/
I wish they’d stop.

@Trigger821 - well said, thank u.
Fuck you. (<- from me)
@Paul_Partisan - No. Who gets pregnant now-a-days? It’s so yesterday…
Here’s just one article (I googled quickly) refuting the idea that once you have a positive pregnancy test, you should quit cold turkey: http://prenatal-health.suite101.com/article.cfm/the_risks_of_stopping_smoking_while_pregnant
DUH!
yes, as I think it’s a huge health-hazard, not only on yourself but definitely on the baby.
@Paul_Partisan - lol
Especially if it involves the well-being of your child.
yes
@Morningstarrising - Exactly what I was gonna say.

@dikdoktor - You’re a jerk.
Plain and simple.
Yes.
i don’t because even doctors are starting to tell smokers that if they just quit, it can make the fetus go into shock and die. smokers should definitely cut back, but i don’t think a cigarette now and then is bad and i don’t think that you should stop if the doctor tells you not to (i’m not a smoker, by the way)
I would definitely say it is.
=[
@dikdoktor - HUZZAH!

@ThA_sLo_1 - Occasional smoking/drinking is probably going
to cause little to no difference. But it’s common knowledge that
chain-smoking and binge drinking can be detrimental, if not fatal, to an
unborn child. And if someone loads their body full of toxins like that,
there’s absolutely no way it will affect only their health and not that
of the child that is growing inside them; the two are linked.
And yes, that can definitely affect anything from behavior/mental stability to overall health – ask any doctor.

worse
Yes, thought I think drinking would be worse. I read that about 23 percent of women binge drink while pregnant. It doesn’t seem like that much at first, but when you think about it…it’s too many.
@ThA_sLo_1 - // Either way, I haven’t heard of any stories
of a fetus being harmed by a mother smoking. //
You were rather lucky. Either that or you’re lying about your health.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effects_of_smoking_during_pregnancy
yes. but of course some women do it anyways. selfish.
yes, it can jepordize the health of your child. my sister smoked through all four of her pregnancies, and 3 of them were premature, one of them had to be in the NICU for a month…. i pretty much assume its because of her smoking.
but then there are some ladies who wont even touch herbal teas while pregnant. food for thought!
in a way, yes. it counts.
hell yes. think about all the diseases the baby could get from a mother who smokes, like asthma.

Fine method of telling, and enjoyable article to acquire factual statements.
