  • Are you Smarter than Me?

Fox News contributor Greta Van Susteren was angry when someone emailed her about her intelligence.  (I received the link for this post from Jessa1155).

The person suggested that her “brain is empty.”  He also wrote “Matter of fact, it is so empty, if you put a pea in your skull it would rattle around like a BB in a boxcar.”

So she decided to blog about it and put it to a vote.  She asked her audience who was dumber:  “Van Susteren or the guy watching a show he doesn’t like.”

Unfortunately for her, it backfired and her audience is voting that she is dumber.  Here is the link:  Link

So I thought it would be fun to try this here with me with a slightly different spin.

Do you think you are smarter than me?

  • No way. You have a hundred years more experience in life and smartness… give or take.

  • I’m smarter than everyone. =w=

  • The odds are in my favor.

  • haha I saw that earlier. Sounds like the entire crew over there is made up of dim bulbs.

  • Hilarious!

See the part at the end about the other Fox News host too!

  • no way. You’re kind of like a mentor figure to me. You have to know more. =D

  • Possibly.  Depends on the subject.

  • Maybe, but I won’t let it affect our friendship.  :0)

  • I love when people post their IQs and use the score to persuade others that they are smart.

  • undoubtedly yes ;)

  • Smarter than most and dumber than *sumb*……………

  • No, because you’re old.

    :D

  • @OhItWontBeForever - hahahah Oh girl I love you!!!

  • Anyone is smarter than a Fox News contributor. :P

  • Magic Eight Ball says: “My sources say no.”

  • Saying I’m smarter than you is not saying much. So, you can guess what my answer is, if that’s not too difficult for you.

  • haha.  Maybe cuter..j/k

  • Well…… that says alot about her audience. As for the question, no. I wouldn’t dare say something I couldn’t prove.

  • I hate Greta Van Susteren with a passion. This makes me so happy.

  • In ways, yes.  In others, no.  For example, I would be smart enough not to post a poll asking people if they’re smarter than I am.

  • I have like 5 Xangans friended. You have like the entire population of Xanga. That’s several hundred times as much information being constantly reported to you than to me. I lose.

  • Psh – no. Just older.

  • Depends on what you really mean by smarter.

    Higher IQ? Probably.
Overall life experience? I highly doubt it.

  • Okay, I wanted to be flippant about this, but I find it’s still gnawing at me.

I saw the article on the Yahoo News when I connected to the internet early today and the whole idea seemed ludicrous to me. First of all, we have Greta Van Susteren, who makes about $1.2 million per year confronting a blogger who may well be jobless and living in his mom’s basement, and she makes the mistake of asking who is smarter, her or somebody who watches a show they don’t like. Seriously. Who doesn’t watch a show they don’t like. I recently subscribed to Time-Warner and found there are like 1000 channels of stuff I don’t want to watch. I subscribed because my wife wanted to watch the HBO series “The Pacific.” I watched it with her. I didn’t like it, but I watched it. Personally, I spent several seasons watching ‘Desperate Housewives,” not because I liked the show, but because my wife did. It was time we were spending together, so I watched a show I didn’t like. Does that make Greta Van Susteren smarter than me? No. By asking such a question she insulted hundreds of thousands of people who compromise on their TV viewing schedule. Good move, Greta. Had she asked, “Who is smarter, the woman who makes $1.2 million a year on a news show or a blogger who throws out insults?” what might the results have been? I’m thinking the results would have been well in favor of the $1.2 million earner. So, when considering Greta’s reaction, and her question, I also have to wonder who is smarter. Apparently, the blogger who lured her into such a compromising position. Fortunately for me, my wife doesn’t like to watch Greta Van Susteren, so I don’t have to either.

  • I’d have to agree with you on a definition for being smarter, but in general yes.

  • Smarter than I*

    Yes, Dan, I am smarter.

  • No. I’m not even sixteen, and you’re old enough to be my dad. (I think?)

  • yes, but that’s just because you sit in a rocking chair.

  • Depends on if you like cotton candy rock candy. If you don’t, I am smarter.

  • I haven’t a clue and I don’t really care. You still amuse me, either way.

  • based on the dearth of complexity of thought on your blog, as well as a literary style no more sophisticated than that of an 8th grader, I’d venture to guess, yes.  yes, I’m smarter than you.  Also, statistically speaking, it is more probable that I’m smarter :)

  • @phantomFive - don’t be jealous. <3 You know that I’m WAY smarter than you. <3

  • Probably not. Not dumber either. that news item is kind of funny

  • How about a different spin:

    You ask stupid questions.

  • I think you are smarter than me.

  • I like reading your comments on these types of blogs. As far as the answer goes.. we’d have to get independent sources outside of Xanga to test us.. I am not giving a biased opinion.

  • I have no idea.
    I don’t think so.
I doubt it matters much anyways.

  • In terms of learning more about the media and the world around us, yes :D

  • ha ha ha ha ha, I’m not sure quite how dumb Greta is but she’s one of the worst interviewers ever.  She can never just ask a question and leave it alone.  She always hypothesizes about 3 to 6 possible answers…watch her, you’ll see what I mean.  I guess she’s trying to lead her interviewee, but instead she just makes everybody want to slap her sillier.

Getting defensive when someone calls you stupid is a sign that you doubt your own itelligence!  LOL

dan, I have no idea how smart you are, relative to me.

  • Depends on how you are measuring smart.

  • By Gum Dan, I sure hope not.  That would make life boring.  (i’m registered with a 145 I.Q. in case you care and I still often match the numbers in funner versions of almost comprehensive online entertainment stuffs too….unless I haven’t slept in too long or haven’t been taking my thyroid hormone and then i start getting dumber fast)

  • i wayyyyyyyy smarter than you!
    you just don’t know it….:)

  • I do not know.

  • Yeah, probably :) lol

  • Hahaha hilarious!!!
And I don’t know you in real life, so I can’t make a real judgment.

  • *shrugs* Maybe, but probably not.

  • As soon as someone declares themselves to be the smartest guy in the room ……… they’re suddenly not.

    Funny how that is.
What’s really Funny is that people keep doing it anyway.  especially on Xanga
(shhhhhh!  Let’s just keep laughing, k?)

  • I’m smart enough not to answer this with any sort of sincerity

  • I’m pretty sure there are some areas in which you are smarter than me and some areas that I’m smarter than you. Combine our intelligence and we’d be able to rule the fucking world!

  • Who knows, intellegence is all in perspective.

  • I think the question is, “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?”

  • er … what was the question?

  • Aside from the slight grammar error in that… I’m probably not smarter. You have age and wisdom on your side :)

  • Nope. Not at all. I’m actually a pretty stupid person.

  • I am smarter than a fifth grader…

  • This is one of your dumber posts, Dan.  There’s an answer in there, somewhere!

    Kathi

  • im pretty much smarter than everybody,,,

@lil_squirrel4ever - sorry,, just scanning over the comments,,, yes you are,, no maybe about it..

  • Generally speaking, probably not.

  • everyone thinks they are smarter than everyone else, old chap.

  • You are one person that I honestly can’t say for sure.  I mean, I am accustomed to being smarter than most people around me (wow, this is sounding prideful… not meant to, but oh well).  Whether you are or not, you take an interest in other peoples’ opinions and like to hear all the arguments to both sides, seeing how both play out.  Perhaps, you are.  Perhaps not.  I don’t think “smart” is the word I would use to decribe you so much as that you display, in some regard, a level of wisdom that many do not have.  You know how to hold your tongue… at least on here.

  • @TheGiantSlayer - That’s not being smart.  That’s being wise.  People tell me I’m a bit of a wiseguy myself, but I am smart enough to know that’s not what they mean.  hehe

  • @Legendairy - isn’t there a bit of intellect in wisdom?

  • i don’t know enough about you, sir. :)

  • I think that I think you’re smarter than a lot of people think you are.

I’d put both of us in the top 95% of everyone.  Here’s why:

You don’t reveal much about yourself, which is smart.  But you don’t reveal much about yourself, so it’s hard to tell if you’re smart.  But I think you understand the complexity of how you simultaneously appear smart and not-able-to-tell, and therefore are smarter than that first mentioned type of smart.  Based on that I’m guessing a minimum of 95th percentile.  Since I think I also understand that complexity, I’m giving myself the same rank, but I wouldn’t want to have to judge who is actually smarter.

  • intellectually? depends.

life experience? um yeah, I’m only 20! haha

  • You’re a theologian, so yeah, I’m smarter than you.

  • Actually, I WOULD be smarter than you, since the grammar which you used is incorrect.  The correct form of the question would be, “Do you think you are smarter than I?”  Or “Do you think you are smarter than I am?”  ;)   Just joshing with the thinking I’m smarter than you are, however.  Just wanted to be snarky.  I’m sure you are very intelligent ;)

  • You probably know more than me in some areas and I bet there are things that I know more about than you do.

  • Nah.  I’ll defer to you, my brother.

  • you have more experience in life than I so I would say no I am not.

  • No, but that story is hilarious!!!!!!!!

  • We talking book smarts here, street smarts or utilisation of sesquipedalianistic pleonasms?? I go with yo and yo yo ’cause I love the yo yo tricks.

  • I think it’s pretty stupid (and rude) when you purposely omit important parts of a story in your summaries just to get more of a rise out of your readers. Like not mentioning that the tattoo was a gang symbol, or that it was State Farm who asked for the money, or that Venus Williams’ bare ass was not showing.

  • Thanks for posting the link Dan.  I had hoped to see some of your readers take part in a discussion in regards to Fox “News” and the personalities (such as Bill O’Reilly, Glen Beck, Anne Coulter.. and yes, Greta Van Susteren) who work for the organization. I was curious to see how many of your readers are supporters of Fox and the conservative agenda they represent.

    But as to your question..
It’s impossible to gauge your true intelligence from the blog posts you write. I see some of your readers are making the dangerous assumption that the language, writing and the depth of your posts are the sum of your intellectual parts. We actually know very little about your ability to reason, your cognitive abilities or your intuitive abilities.
Bragging is silly and in a situation like this VERY predictable. It’s comical how many people pointed out your silly grammar error and used it as proof of their intellectual superiority. How dumb:)

I almost wonder if you did in intentionally to see how many people would take the bait?

  • ahaha poor gal.

i mean, it’s hard to measure intelligence. the way you think can be very heavily influenced by the way in which you were raised or the experiences you had in your life. it’s hard to separate the nature from nurture sometimes.

  • @aireeuh - Ummm… he provides the links for a reason. Obviously his posts are meant to provoke a reaction but that doesn’t make him stupid OR rude. How is he to blame if readers are too lazy to read the entire story before forming an opinion? This is his page, his blog posts and you’re the one throwing insults around… so who’s really being rude here?

  • @Jessa1155 - he asked if we think we’re smarter than he is. that’s my answer. and yes, his posts are meant to provoke a reaction, but on the most controversial ones, if you read the articles (I admit I used to not read them) you see that there’s a huge difference between what the story really was and what Dan said it was. it’s obvious, now that I started actually checking the articles, that he intentionally leaves out vital information regarding the stories in order to skew the truth and get more people to talk about it. I’m getting tired of it, so I was letting him know. I might be rude in saying it, but at least I’m being honest.

  • Of course. Everyone knows atheists are the smartest people on the planet.

  • my favourite part of the article: ” Reading an unrevised cue card in faithful Ron
    Burgundy
    style, Morris twice referred
to himself as co-host Steve Doocy
, at the beginning and end of a
    segment he was announcing.”

xD wow.  yeah.  maybe that whole crew should stay away from intelligence contests.

  • You are probably smarter than everyone here, except Zerowing.  Sorry, Dave.

I haven’t seen Greta van Susteren on tv since 9/11.   Shows how much Fox Snooze I watch.

  • I’m smart enough not to answer this question

  • How do i answer this without breaking your heart… haha

  • @aireeuh -  I see. I didn’t catch any reference to this post in your comment.
I think it’s possible that Dan might find these “vital points” less vital than you do. I’m personally not comfortable making judgment calls when it comes to another person’s intentions. I understand why you found the gang affiliation an important aspect of the story, as did I. But Dan might not have seen it the same way.
The great thing about blogs and the internet is the vast amount of diversity available. If something doesn’t suit your tastes you have a cornucopia of alternative flavors to sample instead. But not finding Dan’s flavor of writing appetizing does not make your palate more refined.. just different.

    Honesty is cool:)

  • Yes. I’d explain to you why, but I don’t think you’d be able to follow. Sorry, Dan!

  • I don’t know whether or not I am smarter than you. I don’t even know exactly how to pin down intelligence.

  • @Grampa_David - Good to see you around! I haven’t been using Xanga lately, but I think I should pop into your blog again sometime. Not tonight though. If I don’t go to bed right now I will fall asleep where I sit.
