Men and Hair Trends
It is kind of funny to me that the trends associated with men are really practical. In other words, if guys are losing hair, they just shave their heads and go with the bald look. If a guy is going gray, he just embraces it and has gray hair.
If a guy starts to gain weight, a little fat looks good on the guy.
Women, on the other hand, have to fight the trends. Each of my three sisters dye their hair. I know they have to have gray hair. But they have to fight it. If they are about to go bald, they have to fight the trend.
Anyway, I was really wanting to get input from women on this one.
Which looks better on a guy, the bald look or the gray look?

Bald if he’s under 45.
Depends on the guy…. Some people look REALLY weird with a bald head.
Gray!!! I love men with silvery gray hair!!! Or that salt and pepper look that Richard Gere had once upon a time….totally sexy and sophisticated!!!
It definitely depends on the guy, some guys can really pull off the gray look.
Which are you doing?
It totally depends on the guy. My husband looks terrible with a shaved head, but the occasional gray that shows up at his temples are kinda sexy. Michael Jordan, though, looks great with a shaved head and I can’t imagine him with gray hair.
I had no gray in my hair when I started dyeing it; I just always wanted to be a redhead.
It really depends on who the guy is.
If you have all of your hair left, go with the gray. If you are balding, just embrace the bald. See, practical.
George Clooneeeyyyy. Whatever he does, is the measuring stick.
I really don’t know. Ha. I don’t mind the bald look or the grey look. Either way is fine.
I’ve always loved prematurely gray hair, but only if you have a full head. If you’re losing hair, it’s absolutely necessary to go bald asap. Else-wise you just look old and ugly as sin.
Dude … Grecian Formula.
It’s been my experience that hair has less to do with a man’s attitude than his overall physical appearance. Any guy who is 35 or so, going bald and is 5’7″, weighs 250 or so, is just going to be out of luck. Really, that guy can shave his head or color what hair he has, but the bottom line is: he’s a dumpy middle aged man. Now, you take a guy who is 50, has a hairline behind his ears, and is in good physical shape … well, he knocks the 40 year old fat guy right out of the competition. And it helps to not be an asshole. And to have a decent job.
Depends on his face, head shape, etc… There are just some people that shouldn’t shave their heads.
Mm the salt and pepper type <3
@breaking_expectations - true that
Ditto on everyone saying “depends on the guy”.
EDIT: btw, if this is about you, I really think you’d look best if you went gray.
EDIT 2: Wait, this wasn’t an either/or thing.
I was thinking of men who who shave their heads because they don’t like being gray. I wouldn’t suggest you do that. Just go gray if it comes up.
If you lose hair, I would suggest keeping what you have, rather than taking it all off.
well, both of those guys are queer, so you shouldn’t be asking the women. =) really depends on the guy. i’m not much for gray, but anderson cooper rocks it. and beckham’s just hot. not all guys can pull off the bald look, but between the two i’d probably choose bald. but yeah, really depends.
I like both, honestly.
I don’t like bald dudes. Ever. A guy who is bald always looks better with hair. ALWAYS.
Grey, I don’t mind.
Just depends.
Men are AWESOME until they reach 80 gray or bald. I’m sorry, but men age well and I am SO glad!
Mmm, the silver fox! I like the grey. John Stewart is one of the hottest grey-haired guys ever.
My husband would look AWFUL bald…grey wouldn’t be so bad.
It totally depends on the guy. The examples look good with their respective styles. I saw a guy on the train 2 months ago with graying hair but he looks good with it.
I notice what some guys do is when they start going gray, they dont want to dye it so they shave their heads. Not a good idea…If I’m given a choice, I’d rather be gray than bald!
It really depends on the guy. if I were to choose, though, I’d go for gray. But yeah, so much goes into deciding who’s handsome or not with that… hard to generalize.
It depends on the guy.
Most guys can pull off gray hair, but not many guys look good bald.
and David Beckham isn’t bald, he just has really short hair.
Grey hair for sure.
grey hair. it nearly always looks good (as long as it’s styled alright).
baldness looking good is contingent upon the guy’s facial features, skull shape, etc.
You ruined it for me by putting that troll’s photo from the Communist News Network. I gotta go for the bald Beckham look. (although he looks like he could use a t-bone steak dinner.)
Or in Anderson Cooper’s case, the gay look.
i have one bald head already. don’t need another. gray sounds ok as long as i keep chanting “sean connery … sean connery….”
Depends on the guy.
On my husband nothing would look good
Really he can do both bald or gray…however right now he has not gotten any gray and he has bright red hair.
It depends on the shape of the head
‘how’s that chemo going’ ‘nuf said…(and yes, i have asked that)
Neither. Colored hair ftw!
I’ll die before I let “a litte fat look good” on me.
Depends on the guy. I’m a little biased as I have that Beckham poster hanging up in my bedroom, so I’d say bald in this instance.
Totally depends on the guy, but I would say a little bit of gray. Some guys can really pull off the shaved head look though!
I think it depends on the guy…that’s sorta like asking, which is better blondes or redheads? Well, obviously that question is flawed, since the superior hair color would be us brunettes, but that aside, I’d still have to say it depends on the person.
It depends on who the guy is. (I could’ve sworn you were gonna ask why women have to fight the trend.)
really it depends on face shape and head shape but for the most part I love buzzed cuts
i love the gray, as long as it’s all gray and even. so so sexy
I don’t think it matters much to me as long as they are neat and smell clean and brush their teeth
I’m not going to address the question. You wanted female input anyways. I can’t fully agree with what is being said here. This really applies to older men. Having gray hair at my age, (I’m still a “teen” for almost two months still) I dye my hair. There’s nothing attractive about it, and people, no matter which age, will be rude about it, whether or not they try to hurt me. There’s different types of gray hair. You can have nothing but gray hair, a single strand, a salt-and-pepper look, etc. I’m not like Taylor Hicks where my hair is fully gray, and I doubt it will be when I reach his age. I just have a lot of gray hair that doesn’t make me attractive.
I had a friend whose friend was prematurely balding. He looked much better with a hat. I also currently have a friend who always has a hat on. He’s prematurely balding. (not from the overuse of wearing a hat, it runs in his family as well) I can say that the pictures I’ve seen of him with a full head of hair are much more suiting on him. If he shaved his head, he would look significantly older, and not in a good way. I also don’t consider “shaved” the same as “bald”, and I’ve had my head shaved. It was to help raise money for cancer awareness. I will admit that I can pull off a shaved look, but I personally prefer having hair. I can style it (not that I actually do) on different days and different occasions. If my hair weren’t so thick, I probably would do that, too.
Depends. There are guys who look good bald. Some don’t. It goes the same with the gray hair.
depends on the guy! but the guy with the bald head in that particular picture has a ridiculously hot body (:
Best of both worlds: Reddas from Final Fantasy XII
I’m thinning on top at a dramatic rate, considering I’m 23. That with the rate I’m stockying up all I’ve got to do is get a tan to emulate that look.
Well if he has hair, gray looks good. If he only had spots of hair, then bald.
The rule some women have told me is that guys with a narrow face should go grey while those with a rounder face trend more toward bald being better. With me, at least, the rule holds true because I would look ridiculous bald. As for the grey… yeah… It’s creeping in way to much these days. I feel so old. My family naturally ages well. So much so, that I was talking with my dad some months back and this guy that came up to us thought we were brothers and refused to believe otherwise even when drivers licenses were offered to prove it. Apparently all my dad has to do to look my age is color his hair and all I have to do to look his age is stand next to him after he does. haha (sorry for the tangent, but this made me think of the story and I thought a few peop[le might get a laugh at my expense)
Here’s a couple eProps since this a ladies’ opinion post.
Bald has always been a favorite of mine
It’s certainly much easier to be a guy, fashion wise, than a girl.
As for which is better, it depends on the man. Some men can pull off gray, like Anderson, and some people can pull of bald, like Patrick Stewart.
Dan rocks the salt-and-pepper look pretty well.
I like the last guy
Totally depends. My hubby’s head is shaped a little funny, but they grey’s are kinda hot. I’m even getting fond of the little lines around his eyes. Of course that has a bit to do with the fact that we were just kids when we started dating (16&18) and now I’m seeing he become a grownup (we’re in our thirties).
It’s true about the weight. My husband gained some weight on a cruise and he looks adorable (he’s pretty thin in general)
Anyway. Depends on the guy. NO SALT AND PEPPER though
oh gosh anderson cooper *lust lust*
to be fair though, to some extent men do feel these pressures. they’re a lot likelier to have combovers than a bald head, and men’s hair dye exists (and sells). I think the pudge thing is right though, and women feel these pressures more.
It depends on the guy, I guess. Usually if you’re losing hair, I’d say shave it all off. But other dudes, my dad for instance, have an abundance of (very gray) hair — in that case, all you need are regular cuts.
This is an unfair question because Anderson Cooper is a silver fox.
I can’t help but think that using Anderson Cooper is cheating, but I whole-heartedly welcome the injustice.
Completely depends on the guy. Some men rock the baldies, others, not so much.
Anderson Cooper is such a studmuffin… I don’t care if he’s gay, hah. Anywho… both. Either way is fine. It’s better than finding out a guy dyes his hair or is attempting a comb-over.
it’s not fair to take a bald man and compare his looks to Anderson Cooper. have you ever SEEN Anderson Cooper? asdjfhakjlfh. HE’S WAY HOTTER.
that second bloke is hotttttttttttttttt,
but i think i heard he’s homosexual?
though david beckham is pretty hot too.
ARGH! DECISIONS!!!!
Depends on the guy.
Depends on the guy. But gray hair on guys looks hot, usually.
aw, my boyfriend is going bald. I should have said bald.
it depends on a persons face and the shape of their head. grey hair makes you look distinguished and gives you an air of respect/wisdom (i’m thinking dumbaldore here) and shaving your head makes you look tough (WWF)
David Beckham has such a gorgeous face that he can pull off ANY hair style. Anderson Cooper is handsome and his grey hair adds to that. It makes him look very dashing and defined. How much a man rocks a ‘do definitely depends on the guy.
I concur with the theme of practicality. I get my hair cut about twice a year. In between, at first it’s straight, then it starts to curl, and by the end I just get sick of it being long, it’s almost like a jewfro.
One more thing. Anderson Cooper may not look the part, but he’s badass. I watched him jump to safety to avoid being hit by a piece of a plastic Shoney’s sign during his reporting on Hurricane Dennis some six years ago.
I love bald men
Bald.
= )
I would say gray…
the bald man looks hot up there.
Grey hair is sweet. ^_^
i would fuck them both
David Beckham is sexy, but so is Anderson360… ha!
Grey. The ‘bald look’ is fine until you sit behind the person for any period of time and then it’s all you can see… I’m not sure why, but it freaks me out.
It definitely depends on the man. Anderson Cooper can pull off gray very well because it makes him look more sophisticated. On the other hand, David Beckham can pull off the bald because he knows that it looks good.
It depends on the shape of their head I think.
Btw Hi,
D
Depends on the guy. Like…if George Clooney went bald….I’m pretty sure that would be ugly.
totally depends on the guy and the hair style. my nephew has done both – the bald route and the hair route (although it’s not gray) – on him, the bald look is better. on someone with an oddly shaped head (or a lot of neck fat) that doesn’t look so good…
I LOVE the Gray Fox, wish he wasn’t gay. I think a young gray is really dignified.
I guess it depends on how old they are…Either one is totally sexxy;)
Well if you’re giving the example of David Beckham he wins everytime! However I think the bald look in general well, I’m not really a fan personally. I guess it really depends on the guy and what suits him the most. For example a guy with a really strangely shaped head would probably be better off keeping his hair. However either grey or shaved is better than a guy dyeing his hair, that just looks plain ridiculous – especially when the eyebrows don’t match!!!
Bald is for 40 and under, maybe 45. I think a bald man is sexy, and I’m often attracted to a bald man over a man with a head of hair. I like the bad ass look.
Grey hair is good on men 50 and older.
Depends.
beckham all the way
Everyone knows CHEST HAIR is where its at
It depends on the guy. David Beckham looks super sexy bald and Anderson Cooper is really cute with gray hair, but I don’t think Beckham could pull off the distinguished gray look and Andy would probably look awkward bald.
I, too, would go for the grey hair. Although, there is that awkward point when you have a quarter-ish head of grey hair, at which point I’d probably (but not necessarily) say bald.
But if I’m in love, it really wouldn’t matter.
Gray, definitely!
Gray look, ;D
@iamtherootsbeneathyourfeet - Creep.
Sorry, but you picked two really horrible photo examples lol. David Beckham looks great with and without hair.. and that’s all I’ll say because I could easily get carried away! As for Anderson Cooper, I can’t imagine him any other way… he looks amazing and I’m a little bummed he plays for the opposite team :
But yeah, it really depends… some men look good with a little gray while others need to maybe find a ‘Just For Men’ something quick! haha. It’s different for everyone
as a hair stylist, i get to see mens balding, grey hair on a day to day basis. i personally have a love for shiny white hair. you know, that pretty silver that pops through and gives people a wise, “ive been through life” look.. yeah, that one. alot of men have complexes about getting grey and/or going bald.. so its not just women that fight that every chance they get. and men, not women i have come to notice, are more particular about the cut and style of their hair.. just what i see..
i LOVE gray hair. I think it looks so unique mixed with the other colors.
Both look fine, the older guy on the bottom is sexy though. He pulls it off well.
my guy is bald by choice and looks very good that way
