  • Xanga and Quality of Content

I have noticed that some people claim on xanga from time to time that the quality of content has gone down on xanga.

I pointed out in a post today that I think the quality of content on the most commented sections of xanga is actually higher.  I pointed out some of the most commented posts back in late 2004 and early 2005.

Here are a few of them.

That post received 196 comments and 298 eprops.

(No offense to those people I just linked).

Do you think the quality of content has gone down on xanga?

  • I am not reading those, but the answer is no. It’s silly, go somewhere else if you don’t like it.

  • Given the chance people will complain about anything. So, no.

  • I think it depends on who you are subscribed to.

  • Featured content seems to have always been pretty crappy…

  • Since about two or three years ago, or even last year? Hell yes.

  • lol i love how the comments in all of them- for different sites- are all like “you are so hottt where do u live your site is really nice looking you are REALLY HOT WOW nice hair!”
lol i think the quality of COMMENTS has gone up.

Idk.  I think you’re kind of creating a… experiment that is already set up to prove your point.   Compare xanga to specific instances of old xanga?   Yes, it looks better.   Compare it to the top content on other blogging/writing sites?  Mmm… idk about that.   And in all truth, when people think “is the quality good?”   In their mind they aren’t comparing it to xanga 2004, they’re comparing it to other contemporary places for information/blogging sites.

    Good point though.

edit: I think the overall quality has stayed the same, because it’s still just people.   I think the quality of what constitutes a “top” blog has changed.   And I guess that’s what I addressed.  so I think I agree with you sort of.

  • yes, I lend my entries to the evidence

  • well  I know that the quality of what I write has gone down the drain for sure (not saying it was in any means good to begin with)

  • xanga was never good.

  • From what people have told me. And from reading those links. The content of Xanga has gone up.

I heard drama years ago would be over who stole whose layout.

  • no. i hate it when people make it their main purpose to complain about xanga content, xangans or anything xanga related.  only do it once in a while.  and put some soul and style into it, for chrissakes.

  • I think if one spent less time worrying about the overall quality of content, and more time finding blogs that fit each person’s particular taste, we wouldn’t have these problems.

The thing is that there are certain blogs everyone wants to read and comment because being associated with these blogs means you get more traffic. And so they will befriend and comment these people even if they are dulled by the content… DUHH you’re gonna be annoyed by the quality and think it’s going down. Just…. stop reading stuff you don’t like, gee whiz people.

  • it’s a matter of perspective.  the content that a lot of people are used to seeing has gone down, meaning the people they most enjoyed reading blog a lot less or not at all.  the “new” content they see now isn’t what they like as much, so for them it has gone down.

    @hilaw - stylish complaints, ftw.

  • ba ha, I see a theme in your links.  don’t much like the baby boys aye?  well, me neither.

I guess it wouldn’t be very proper of me to say that I think xanga content is largely and consistently mediocre across the board, so that’s exactly what I’m going to say!

  • I know I think my quality has gone up (I may be wrong?)

  • you know, up until a few days ago i thought that.  But then i realized how small of a box of readers that i read.  So, maybe i just need to be willing to step out of that box.  Xanga has many people in this community…much more than the 700 friends that i have friended. I am sure that there is some quality somewhere.

  • I remember when Xanga was all boobs and banter…. Now it’s just banter… Definitely down.

  • I am more active on xanga. thus it has gone up

  • I think there has always been people who post high quality posts and those who don’t. it is just a matter of finding the right people to read.

  • Here’s a random sampling of comments from 2004-2005:

I think featured content is the people with the most comments. I dunno
    though.
&I think being around ex’s is always a
    little bit awkward.
    congrats about the midterms,

Yeah, I’d say the quality of Xanga has sharply declined from these bits of literary genius.

  • You make an ironclad argument by thoroughly confusing the issue with the facts.

  • If people are making those claims, they should stop complaining and start writing.

  • It’s kind of sad because there was so many people on Xanga back then, even shitty entries like that could get that many comments. Nowadays, stuff on the front page gets less than 100.

Even though that old stuff is shitty, I feel like Xanga didn’t really try convince people that it was actually good content. Now, I feel like they really push the fact that the front page is the best of Xanga…which is sad, because it’s the same old stuff all over again. And it’s not very well written, either. When you’ve been around for some years, you get really sick of the front page. I barely even look at it. Around 2008 I did, but I’ve stopped since then and I didn’t before then.

  • I don’t read enough posts to know. I look mostly at friends on here,I rarely explore outside friends, only some rec’s from time to time

  • Man, the more things change.

  • I don’t think it’s a Xanga issue. I think there’s been a steady decline of literacy in the Western World for many decades. We’re bound to see some of that reflected here.

  • Dan, you should know that a high number of comments =/= quality.

  • I think the people on xanga have just gotten older… grown up… more mature… lost the people of lower quality… but the rest of us remained the same. idk. That probably doesn’t make much sense, but it does in my head.

  • No the quality has not gone down.

  • man, i miss old xanga sometimes.

  • but i mean, james is such an ASSHOLE; it’s important.

no, seriously, i miss the glory days of xanga, aka when everyone was emo. and i am not being sarcastic, that shit was the bomb dot com.

  • It is about the same.

  • btw, if you’d asked the question “do you think the quality of site layouts has gone down on Xanga?” we could all have a good laugh and return to our structured, personalized themes that at least load right. lol.

  • I’m not reading those, too tired for all that work.

I think people should quit bitching. If you don’t like what you read, then stay away from that blogger.

    Simple.

  • no most likely not and if any one wants to complain about the featured and top blogs that they don’t like they only people they can blame is themselves dont comment it wont be feature. Find a good substantial blog and rec the heck out of it .. Those links were weird emo boys mostly hhmm

  • Back when I started right up until today I tend to read only the good content. there has always been good content on Xanga, just have to know where to look. I never understood those blogs who could post inane crap and get hundreds of comments. I think it swings the other way now; everybody seems to think they are a master debater and it gets so tedious. Pseudo intellectualism doesn’t necessarily equal an interesting blog, though it usually does equal a bore.

  • The quality of content has gone down in the past 2 years.  Sure, it went UP from 2004/2005, but down since it went up.

  • However, the quality of drama is holding steady.

  • @CallMeQuell - Ha, you post your homework now! C’mon, kitten; you were so much more vivacious and interesting and engaging when you weren’t trying to be academic and make a point and write for your audience.

And that goes for everyone. Quality’s gone done, because everyone cares too much about what they’re getting out of it – comments, notoriety, popularity. The minute I can trade my credits for cash, I’ll care; until then, write for YOU and maybe we’ll see interesting blog posts from people again.

  • Sell your soul, you will see more cheesy stuff. Stay to yourself on here and have a few friends and you will see much more quality content.

  • I think that , its based on what people like, you may get a lot views but little comments that just goes to show that, your content just appeals to those persons who commented

  • I think the content is really good if you look for it,I do not think it is worse than before. but I am not a deep thinker,I like shallow….soooo.

  • Most of us were much younger then.  A good deal of our userbase was in high school.

  • Yep back in the day this place was pure social networking, so if you were a goofy kid with 200 friends.

  • The most popular entry (link 7) had a malicious javascript on it. I hope your anti virus was up to date

  • Nah, man, it’s cool.

  • My brain is melting.

  • Hahahahaha. Point made.

  • I think it depends on to whom you subscribe. Some of the better writers I’ve known have left, but it’s on me to find new folks with whom to replace them.

  • Hell Dan, of course the content of Xanga has improved.
You showed me a way to become better and after a few technical difficulties, – I’m starting to get the drift of this place called Xanga.

    Thanks for that.

  • How do these people get so many comments?

  • I can’t even imagine how many hours of your life you invested in researching this post.

  • I think people should stop bitching about content and the quality of xanga posts. I’m personally tired of it and I know others are as well. We all share something in common. We enjoy writing and we all have different writing styles. If someone wants to slap a youtube video in their post, then by God, let them and stop whining about it. If some wish to write poetry, shut the hell up and let them write their poetry. If some wish to display their photography skills, then let them. Get the hell over it or you’re going to end up driving people away from xanga. And I seriously doubt that’s what we want to happen, right?

  • No….its about the same.

  • If someone doesn’t like a particular blog…..they can always find one to replace it!

  • I feel like on any given day, half of the top blogs are lacking in content and the author’s editing skills leave something to be desired. However the other half are usually quite worthy.

  • Most of the content on Xanga seems to be about Xanga or it’s members. Its very inclusive and not very inviting to casual users which can come off as boring.

  • lol at that last link. really people? i guess emo is still in.

  • Maybe.  Hard to say.  I waste too much time on Xanga, but I don’t spend a lot of that time randomly poking around, so there could be a lot of good posts I’m missing.  I enjoyed Xanga more when my friends were on here.  They inspired my own posts and I enjoyed interacting with them.  I’ve never regained that feeling of community.  Huh.  Maybe there ARE good posts on here and I just don’t care anymore.  I miss the interesting discussions people used to have here.

  • I would absolutely say the content has changed, but whether or not the overall quality has gone down is subjective. The variety has definitely decreased. Honestly, I haven’t subscribed to a new person in years because I just can’t find anyone that I consider interesting, or even funny. And more and more people I once followed are disappearing. Xanga is definitely experiencing atrophy.

  • @Kestryl - Hey, it’s good homework!

But yeah, you’re right. I scaled back because all my obnoxiousness went to Twitter, I think, and because my dad started following me. I should try and bring some of that back; I hate the idea that I’m an old fogey already.

  • Xanga has always had shitty content. The type of shit varies but it’s all shit.

  • um YES.
thank you for that; it was quite enjoyable.
