  • What is Ok to Wear on a Plane?

I was reading an article on cnn.com and the topic was a man who showed up to an airport and was allowed to board a plane wearing the following outfit.

The reporter was upset because she thought a woman would never be allowed to board a plane with that outfit.  American Airlines has the rule that passengers “clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers” could be refused from boarding the plane.

In the article, the question was asked “Should airlines restrict what passengers can or can’t wear on flights?”  Here is the link:  Link

  • I wear suits.

    Never goes wrong.

  • Old people should be caged.

  • I know people should be able to do their own thing… but what the hell. That scares me.

  • Wasn’t there something in the news a year or two ago about a young woman who was taken off the plane because they considered what she was wearing offensive? And if I remember right, there was nothing wrong with her outfit, it’s something you would see people wear to the mall or school, the only “questionable” item she was wearing was a jean mini skirt but that’s not bad at all. They shouldn’t be allowed to control what people wear and if they’re going to, then make the standards the same for everyone not just on an individual basis

  • Oh geez, sure would hate to be the person who sat by that old man, hopefully it wasn’t a long flight.

  • lol. no booty shorts or belly shirts! omg. D: i would just died laughing.

  • Airlines, like other businesses should be allowed to refuse service to anyone for any reason.  If the populous doesn’t like it then they’ll go out of business.

  • “clothed in a manner that would cause discomfort or offense to other passengers” can mean pretty much anything if you take it literally. Some people get offended by spaghetti strap tank tops or short shorts like sofies.

  • He’s just dressing appropriately for the obligatory security checks.  He’s probably taking a trip with many stops overs.

  • Yeah.  Especially if it’s a long flight, yo.

  • My friend had on Captain Morgan pjs and wasn’t allowed to board his flight.

  • haha. I sometimes wear like tracksuits. jeans make me so uncomfortable when I can’t get up and move.
    ps.
    that pic is awesome. :P

  • I was watching a show called “Airline”- reality TV about Southwest, and they refused a man boarding because he was in a mini skirt and two passengers complained in the gate area that they could see ‘his privates’.  It was quite short.  Oddly enough, he knew, verbatim, the law regarding indecent exposure.

  • Oh my you gave me a giggle this is funny

  • Yes. They have dress codes all over the place. I don’t know what it should be, but there should be one. I don’t want to be sitting next to a nude stranger for a long flight.

  • Don’t wear a rag on yer gourd and you’ll be fine

  • To a slight degree yes, because airplanes are very tight quarters.

  • @PopeOnABomb - I’m actually a tailor-nuke, wherein if I lose all the layers, I explode and suddenly everyone for a five to seven mile radius is clad in an immaculate pinstripe suit.

  • This is why I always ship myself as cargo or only fly all-nude airlines, that way dress code never plays in to either form transit.

@Drakonskyr - I imagine that under your suit is another suit and yet another suit. Actually, you might just be a bolt of wool that has sprung to life.

Also, I’ve been on flights with women dressed in stuff much revealing/sexy/slutty/whateveryouwanttocallit than that. So if they do have a rule, it needs to be very specific.

  • @HisKeiki - That’s true. “Offensive” is different for everyone & some people take it to the extreme. I’ve heard people say they get offended if people wear a certain color. ::eyeroll::

I mean as long as you arent indecent (by that I mean nearly naked), whatever. I personally wear loose clothing I wont mind being in for hours incase of delays or I dont get up on the plane. And I suggest shoes you can take off & put on easy for security checks.

  • Like any business … They reserve the right to refuse service.

  • I don’t think so, I’ve seen jedi and I wanna keep seeing people in costume.

  • People can wear whatever they want. I wear sofee’s and a tank top when I travel, if they made me wear real clothes, I’d be pissed as hell.

  • I thought it was MORE appropriate if a woman dressed like that…

  • @Drakonskyr - I want to be in that radius when you go off.

    Free suit!

  • Eh, let people dress how they want, but have a “blanket” policy – if they don’t like your outfit, for whatever reason, you will be covered with a light blanket for the entire flight. Or a poncho. Or whatever.

  • A bit of a dress code? It wouldn’t bother me, so long as it didn’t go very far.

  • I think I’m more disturbed by a man wearing that than a woman. As for what airlines should and should not allow, anything that wouldn’t get you arrested for indecent expose should be OK, I would think.

  • @emily_shannon - my thoughts exactly!

  • I’d like to say the airlines shouldn’t restrict what you wear on a plane…
…but, unfortunately, some people don’t know how to dress themselves.

  • where cotton because if there is a fire it won’t stick to you

  • If it bothers me I just won’t look at him… no worries…as long as everything important is covered… the same goes for women I guess… L:ive and let live.

  • If you can legally walk around with it on, than you should be able to wear it on the plane.

  • Yes they can say no to someone wearing something inappropriate.  Any business can!!  No shirt no shoes no service!

  • At least it would have made the flight less boring to sit next to him!

  • This isn’t just something that would make someone uncomfortable…it is obscene!

  • I thought public is public? And indecency laws should apply to the skies as well. But what the hell…. I wear whatever is comfortable for confined spaces whether up in the air or on the ground.

  • This isn’t just something that would make someone uncomfortable…it is obscene!

  • SEXY! ;) No shirt no shoes no service!

  • @SodomyClown - hahahahahahaha….that one should have most def

  • Sure, but these rules should be very loosely enforced. Like, if someone calls my outfit “offensive” because I’m not wearing a burka, they can go fuck themselves because I’m still riding on the plane =)

  • A woman…a young blonde…got thrown off a plane for wearing more than that. She was covered and in a mini skirt. She was tossed because she “was a distraction”. Unfair…I think so.

  • If they want to.  Companies should be allowed to do whatever the law allows.  If people don’t like the company rules, they can find another company to support.

  • No, he’s lookin sexay.

  • haha. is that for real?

  • I personally don’t care what others wear. I’d probably ask that guy if I could photograph him. I’m sure he’d say yes.

  • If they are smart, they will follow that dress coda and kick the freaks off. If one freak is going to piss off a dozen customers. It is better for the long term bottom line that you refund their money.

  • According to my oldest son, proper airplane attire consists of combat boots, a tutu, a viking helmet and a rubber fist. The shirt is optional.

    I so love that boy.

  • @Drakonskyr - i can only hope to be within the blast radius. i just can’t afford to buy a nice suit of my own.

  • No. No limitations. However,if you show up in something that could signal a potential security risk, as in, super baggy clothes or a ton of layers, expect to be pulled aside for as much screening as is deemed necessary.

Then again, businesses can refuse service to anyone, for any reason, at any time.
But then a full refund would be due.

    -Jessy

  • Inappropriate man or female.

  • Wow the old man got away with it…

  • just cropped sweats with a cute tank or hoodie. i just wanna be comfortable, but not look like a slob. i fly again in december so i’ll probably have on my ugg boots and my little green aeropostale matching jacket and sweats. *shrugs*

  • That is just too much skin. It doesn’t so much bother me that he’s wearing chick clothes….it would just be better for everyone if it was less revealing.

  • That American Airlines rule is far too relative. I like something comfy but conservative. Flannels are always a good choice.

  • Well I say it depends on the duration of the flight.

  • Well, they even though the government can regulate them, they still are private companies and they can have a say–or not–if they want.

  • That outfit is not okay for anyone to ever wear anywhere.

  • Dear Dan,

Airlines shouldn’t restrict what passengers can wear on thier flights, unless they have an obviously posted missive so the passengers can see it: “The airline can and will eject any undesirables from the plane in flight if we don’t like your outfit or think you are as fat as Kevin Smith “

In answer to the first question: What is ok to wear on a plane?

    Snakeskin on a plane.

Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool

  • I would almost rather ride next to the fella in the picture (at least the flight wouldnt be boring…heheh)…than sit next to one of those people who insists on wearing their overstuffed coat…carry a purse large enough to carry their clothes for the weekend…and want it ALL right there with them…encroaching on MY space!!!

  • on the positive side, it would be hard to hide a bomb!  peace, Al

  • Why was that guy allowed to go on the plane like that and the woman who was dressed “offensive” couldn’t?

    Fuck American Airlines lmfao

  • LOL WTF. I’m flying out next month, hope I don’t see anyone wearing this!

  • I hardly think airlines have the right to restrict freedom of expression… but for the record that dude is friggin wierd.

  • Make him put on a trashbag.

  • what ever happened to “no shirt, no shoes, no service”?

  • Hell yea, i would not want to see a guy or girl wearing that on a plane.

  • @SodomyClown - Young people should shut up!

  • They already DO restrict what you can and cannot wear- people in business and 1st class must wear suits in some form or another.

  • Yah; wear what ya want!

  • @Drakonskyr - Just as long as it’s not your birthday suit.

  • Well, I like the “no shirt, no shoes, no service” kind of rule… but I mean also with “no pants” added in there. :)

  • He is “overboard”.
body odour could be offensive too………what happens to a smelly passenger?

  • i think if people are paying out the ass for a plane ticket, they can damn well wear what they want.

  • yeah…if I’m paying $400 to fly somewhere, I do NOT want to sit next to that guy.

  • That is definately not the right thing to wear on a plane or to even be seen in public with.  That is awful.

  • You know what if that’s what makes him happy then he should go for it. What if this was on this guy’s bucket list or something? I say more power to him! And I say this with my eyes closed. : P

  • @beloved_angel82 - Flying is a privilege and they are running a business. If it makes multiple other paying customers not want to fly on their airline, they are going to do something about it.

@jdortiz - Exactly, it is a private business.

I work for Delta myself, and it is totally up to the gate agent and flight attendants. If they receive complaints about it (relavent complaints mind you) or if they themselves know it is going to be an issue for the general populace, then they may deny someone boarding. Regardless of what the policy says, that is how it works on the front lines.
As an airline employee, when I am traveling it must be business casual to fly, but that is to be expected while wearing a Delta badge.

  • Within reason.

I travel too much to get all ‘gussied’ up each time. Clean sweats and a t-shirt is how I always go. When you’re on a 6 hour flight, or longer, dress attire is far too uncomfortable.

  • i had a friend who took off his pants to get through the security line quicker. no joke. he stuffed them through the x-ray machine because they had a bunch of metal brads or buttons on them. the people in line with him were shocked but he was in a huge hurry and couldn’t be stopped to be wanded.

  • why can’t we just go naked to get it over with? let’s go out with a bang! [[ then some naked people like myself can be really offsensive. so i guess it doesn't matter one way or another. *sigh* ]]

  • @LadyAD - … and denied internet access.

  • he looks very comforting to me

  • Ya know, I would hope people would be more modest.  But, I really don’t think it should matter, AS LONG as they are actually showing their nitty gritties.

  • I work at an airport and i have actually seen that man in person a few times. That is kind of tame for him…. Totally not OK to me. How do you explain to your kids why that man is dressed like a cheaper hooker.

  • a healthy dose of public shame should have worked. People are spineless anymore

  • The airlines is a business, like any other business. If you wear something offensive, you can be asked to leave a resturant. The same rules should apply to a plane. It’s a transaction, a service provided to you in excahnge for money. Not a right. We should strive to make our fellow paying passengers comfortable.

  • @beloved_angel82 - That’s exactly what sprang to mind when I read this. Talk about double standards! And needless to say- that is a lot more offensive and reveals more than that other lady was wearing.

  • I think within reason they should be able to…like making sure people are wearing more than just undergarments, that their naughty bits are covered and all…but other than that its none of their business what people wear.

  • omfg hahahhahahahahhahahahah

  • It is always ok to look at others and judge them, until you are the one being judged!

  • maybe just a code about middrift exposure? he should at least be required to wear fishnet with that ;p

  • i think this guy was just auditioning to be on peopleofwalmart.com but got confused and drove to the airport instead

  • @beloved_angel82 - Here is the link for the news article you’re talking about if anyone else wants to take a gander. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/20638479

I think it’s a fair rule, I just think they need to put more defined guidelines in place, perhaps by saying if you can see inappropriate scenes or language printed on clothing or if someone is showing a body part that most people wouldn’t show at their grandmother’s house. We have to keep in mind, too, that some people don’t realize what they’re showing. However, I didn’t really see anything wrong with the woman who was asked to deboard the Southwest Airlines flight. As far as this guy?? As long as his junk isn’t showing for the world to see and he doesn’t come on to me, I’m probably okay with the way he’s dressed. Besides, I’m sure there was a good reason he was dressed that way… convention?

  • I think that appropriate clothing should be worn when on a plane. However, depending on how far my plane ride would be I would want to be in something comfortable. I don’t fly for business… ( I have yet to fly in a plane) but if I were to fly it would be for family gathering or vacation. I would want to wear something comfortable such as lounge pants and a nice shit being there will be other people on the plane that wont want to see me in my undergarments. lol

  • @SodomyClown - I will have the last laugh from wherever, because you won’t always be young!  I never thought I’d see 50 and here I am, waving at it as it recedes into the past LOL!!!! Lighten up, kid, no one gets out alive, enjoy what you have while you can, it doesn’t last forever.

  • Interesting…  I always wear sweats.  Not the most attractive attire, but comfy.

  • I think there should be one but it shouldn’t be too strict. Sure his outfit is distracting and weird thanks to social norms but it’s not revealing. It would be hard to draw a line though besides following the indecent exposure laws. And it should be reasonable, not like some high school’s dress codes. Like the rules that a lot of schools have, a skirt or shorts must fall below 4 above the knee or similar? I hate that since 4 inches is not the same on everybody. Girls got away in booty shorts and I had to wear guy’s basketball shorts on the days it was too hot to wear pants (finding skirts that were casual were even harder than shorts that worked). Sorry, mini rant there.

  • That is really in the security person’s discretion I think, cause you find some places are far more strict then others, which makes no sense, but it’s true

  • He looks like a creep! There should be some restrictions.

  • Did he have any problems going through security??? One way to get through.

  • haha! it honestly doesnt bother me. as long as you’re not butt naked, b/c then the children would have seen too much.

  • that’s quite a disturbing scene.  there could be children at the airport.  i don’t want to be rude for that guy has the right to dress however he likes, but there should be a rule on how much flesh one (man or woman) is allowed to show at public places.  i mean, really.

  • Right of Admission Reserved…  And I would refuse to sit next that guy.

  • Why not?  The FAA controls everything else.  I can’t take normal sized toothpaste on a plane – have to damn near strip to my skivvies, unpack the laptop, and heaven forbid i should have some body jewelry that sets of the alarm! I can’t say anything remotely terroristic, must have more ID for the FAA than regular old police, can’t sell my tickets, can’t get my tickets refunded when stranded, can’t get off the damn plane when stranded.  Why not regulate what we can and can’t wear?  Seriously – how long before we’re all flying in our tighty-whities after the urine drug screens?

  • This guy has got to be a “Flaming Queer”. Any normal man would be caught dead wearing that to fly. Maybe something in a pink chaffion.

Silly man dicks are for chicks. Get a real outfit

  • Yes, to an extent. I think that outfit should not have been allowed. It’s vulgar and offense, on a male or a female.

  • yes,  birthday suits are a big no no

  • does anyone realize that this is an outfit that most young girls do wear? those underwear-shorts and shirts that are either too tight or two thin….

i mean the shorts might be jean and the top might be a different color, but the lengths or levels of “inappropriate”  are the same.

  • oh yeah sure. the geriatric, open midriff camouflage look. He must be hoping not to get noticed. ;)
