Helmet Laws
A guy from work died recently. He was in an accident while on his scooter. He was not wearing a helmet.
My brother was in a serious accident when we were kids. He was on his bicycle. That was before helmets were popular. If you think about it, you are traveling pretty fast on a bike and the pavement is so hard.
Do you wear a helmet when you are riding a bike?

No, even though I probably should. They drive me nuts.
I don’t go bike riding.
Yes. I have the athletic ability of a cardboard box.
Yes, always. A kid I grew up with got permanent mental damage from crashing his bike. He would have done so much better if he had worn a helmet.
I do. I’ve fallen down enough times as a kid to know better.
DAMMIT! I WAS ALMOST FIRST!
There literally is nothing funnier in SF than some retard-lookin’ hipster kid with a giant goofy helmet. FUNNIEST THING EVER.
My boyfriend owns a bike shop and I love neuroscience. That combination = always wearing my helmet. Knowing that my personality could be gone, I could forget everyone I know, or you know… that I could die? Always wear my helmet. It’s stupid not to.
No I do not. I ride my bike almost everywhere right now. Maybe I should be.
No, but I do wear one on my motorcycle, even though it’s not mandatory.
I don’t now, but I also don’t ride a lot now either.
When I do I’ll probably get another helmet.
Always.
no, but i want to get one. and a basket for my bike.
Yes.
I went motorcycle riding with out a helmet. I was on a date of sorts and choose not to because I didn’t want to look like a dork. He offered it to me so it was my choice. I only did that a couple of times. I would from now on though, I have known to many people who have gotten into accidents and have died/got seriously hurt.
Now that i have children, i wear a helmet for bike riding, skiing or riding a motorcycle….but i really don’t do any of those very frequently.
I am so safety conscious I don’t even own a bike.
I haven’t ridden a bike in years, but I never wore a helmet when I did.
I do, even if I’m just going around the block. Wearing a helmet may seem annoying but I like that option better than brain damage or paralysis. People put vanity before safety & this is one instance where it can literally kill you.
Doubleful Debbies should watch the videos I see in school & then say they wouldnt wear a helmet.
I don’t own a bike.
Yes.
Helmets don’t fit on my head unfortunately.
We didn’t wear seatbelts when we were kids and now that we have to.. accidents and wrecks happen more..we die more. Weird irony, huh.
I did as a kid. Can’t remember the last time I rode a bike as an adult or if I wore a helmet.
Can’t say that I do.
Yup, always, as well as when I go horse-back riding. I’ve been in/known people in too many accidents not to.
I don’t think I’ve ever hit my head falling off a bike, but I’ve hit it after being thrown from a horse a couple times, and I get a bad enough headache with the helmet I don’t even want to imagine the injury without it.
I wear a helmet if I’m mountain biking or riding fast, but for riding around campus at running speeds I don’t bother. I usually end up on my hands and knees anyway when I fall off a bike.
Yes!
i’ve never owned a helmet, even while learning how to ride a bike.
Nope, never. It’d be a different story though if I were riding a motorcycle bike.
I dont wana wear helmet – but its against the law if you dont wear helmet when biking you could get a ticket
VERY rarely. Even though when I was 13 I flipped over my handlebars and cut my head. I still prefer not to.
I have a helmet, but I don’t wear it when I ride my bike. Mainly because when I do ride my bike its around the neighborhood in which you are lucky to see one car, and I ride really, really slow.
Yes.
I only wear one when I roller skate
I hate helmet hair but yes, I do wear one.
No because I dont go bike riding and have never done.
well no *guilty
I do wear one, but by my choice. And that’s the only way it should be. Even for motorcycles.
I have never worn one on a bicycle but on a motorcycle you are a fool if you don’t wear a skid lid,too many people in cars and pickups don’t look for motorcycles.
Yes, helmets can sometimes make you look dumb… but I bet your brains spilling out all over the ground makes you look even dumber…
I wear a helmet when I ride.
I only ride a bike sporadically, as in renting, and I may do this soon in fact i was in the park yesterday looking and thinking about it.
yes i would wear a helmet knowing what head trauma can result in. I am assuming they will have them when i go rent a bike.
I think when I rode one on Governor’s island, which was free, they had helmets.
I always wore a helmet when I was riding a bike
Never I hate helmets.
I always wear one. But when I was younger (and stupider) I used to ride around with my drunk friend on his motorcycle at stupid fast speeds without a helmet. I think I kind of wanted to die in those days.
When I ride my motorcycle I always wear my helmet. My son has a helmet and elbow/knee pads for his bicycle.
“If you were born to hang, you’ll never drown”.
You’re gonna go the way you’re gonna go. Every day is a gamble with your life. Wear a helmet if you want to, or don’t – it’s all the same!
p.s. I never wore a helmet when riding a bike, but always did on a motorcycle.
They don’t make bikes big enough for me. I never wore a helmet when I was a kid an I had many crashes, not bad cuz I wasn’t a daredevil like so many kids are
yes.
Sometimes
My dad was in the air force and if you lived on base, you were required to wear a helmet so I grew up always wearing one and now I can’t imagine going on my bike without one. Though I did go on motorcycles in Ecuador with out one… Woops
My dad went flying off his bike last summer and suffered a brain bleed. He was in the ICU for a week. I had a the great pleasure of having to make some amazingly hard decisions while I awaited my brothers’ arrival from out of state. Luckily my dad has madea full recovery.
I never get on my bike without a helmet now.
No, not for a bike.
My state only has 1 law regarding helmets: you have to wear them on a bike if you’re under 16. Other than that – motorcycle or bike – you can do what you want. People clip their helmets to their motorcycles and then pull over to put them on once they reach the Mass border.
I like it that way. I KNOW it’s stupid not to wear a helmet. But we should have the freedom to make bad choices if we want to.
They’re good to wear. I don’t ride a bicycle but I went to a motorcycle shop to buy a new helmet. There was a sign behind the counter that said, “If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 helmet.”
I don’t go biking anymore…I used to wear helmets then I didn’t. It just depended I think, but most of the time, I do.
I do, even though it’s not mandatory. I believe here in Canada bicycle helmets are only mandatory for kids under 16 or 17. I see many parents out riding with their kids, and the kids have helmets but the parents don’t. Because that’s setting a good example.
I think it is mandatory (in Canada) for everyone to wear them with motor bikes though. I never see a biker without one.
So not what I wanted to read the weekend I planned on getting a bike…
No.
Nope. I do not.
I have to admit that I never do. I ought to purchase one if I ever ride much again.
I never ride a bike.
i don’t ride bikes, but i would wear a helmet if/when i do. i wonder if there are bicycle helmets that cover the whole head? i mean, if a dumb motorist crashes me, i want my entire head protected because i don’t want my jaw messed up from hitting the ground and i still want to eat solid food.
i saw a dad riding his bike alongside his kid who was also on his bike one time. the kid was wearing a helmet, but dad wasn’t. isn’t it ironic? stupid dad for being a bad example.
I don’t ride a bike…
of course! it’s actually against the law NOT TO wear a helmet here!
woah. i missed the first part the first time around and i just saw it on the main page, (about your co-worker). Yes, on motorcycles i definitely wear one. Cycling, I don’t.
I always wear a helmet while riding a bike. I see kids speed along on their bikes with only wearing a baseball cap. Even some adults choose not to wear helmets. Maybe they think it’s stupid or uncool? Well let’s see what happens when they have an accident.

Yes when I’m actually on a bike (I never learned). That’s mainly since I’m still trying to learn though. Far too many possibilities of me falling. I would wear one anyways I think though. I’ve heard too many horror stories that could have been prevented or lessened by the person wearing a helmet. I’d much rather the helmet crack than my skull.
no. i’m a REBELLLL.
Always.
Although, ironically, the last time I actually had fall, it was while I was biking after some serious drinking– and I’d lost my helmet either at the bar, or somewhere else. That time i did a full trebuchet over the handlebars, and landed on my back, mostly unhurt.
A helmet will not protect me from my own stupidity.
But wear it for the times when you’re smart.
I hated helmets as a kid, but since running into my high school French teacher’s wife, who biked regularly until she ran over a small stone, fell on her head, cracked her vertebrae and is now nearly paralyzed from the neck-down, I’m really, REALLY cool with helmets.
Where do you work?
no. I only ride my bike around the streets near our house, and we live in a tiny secluded community where there’s very, very little traffic.
Last March, My boyfriend was hit by a car while riding his bike home from work. Since we’d been together I’d alwas told him he should wear a helmet, but his excuse for not wearing one was that his head was big (which it is) and that he looks stupid in his helmet. Thankfully he was alright except for the huge bump on his head and scratches, but he still wouldn’t wear a helmet, but now he’s started driving he doesn’t use his bike often.
