  • Gap Tooth Trend

I was just reading an article about how the “gap-toothed trend” is actually causing people to get a gap between their teeth on purpose.  Here is the link:  Link

I can’t imagine wanting to put a gap between your teeth on purpose.

If you had a gap between your teeth, would you want it fixed?

Comments (163)

  • Yes. If it were big. But otherwise, I wouldn’t give a flying crap, probably

  • what >:OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO im trying to get rid of my little iny bidy gaps why would someone want that

  • Can’t pubes get caught in that?

  • How do you put a gap between your teeth on purpose?

Anyway, I’ve always had a gap between my teeth, and no, I don’t want to get it fixed.

  • i have a gap. and i realllllly want it fixed!

  • why cant people ever be happy with the way they look naturally? this is ridiculous

  • After so many years in braces, and all that money my parents spent on them? No thank you!

  • Depends on how wide the gap was.

I wouldn’t have my teeth pulled apart like that, btw. That’s one heck of a trend. David Letterman is now America’s role model?

  • I already have a speech impediment, why not add a whistle to it, too?

  • The gap, in women, is apparently subliminally sexy and attracts men. I can’t remember the reason but there was a study done back in the 60s.

  • my teeth are so close together, they slightly overlap each other. I wouldnt want a gap, (why anyone would WANT one is beyond me,) But id be fine with straightening my teeth out alittle.

  • I have fucked up teeth, then again I have a face and personality to match. I wouldn’t look right perfectly straight pearly whites.

  • Yep I would fix it. Why would I want food between my teeth

  • More popularization of low class values much like tattoos, piercings and bones in the nose.

  • Mine are so crowded that the front two are turned 45 degrees inwards.  Looks like a gap, but if they were straightened they’d be aesthetically perfect.  But I’m happy with the way they are now.

  • Gawd, what will we glamorize next? Don’t people realize that some people wish they could afford braces?

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Low class? Because Orthodontics are expensive?

  • Maybe they can work at the Gap.

  • @Uek - The bitch in the photo is hardly poor. And it is the elite mainstream media that is peddling this garbage.

  • I had braces for four years..I like having no gaps and straight teeth.

  • I have gaps between my teeth. You know the pointy ones? Yeah those ones … there’s a gap between my two pointy teeth and the rest of my teeth … like a noticeable gap.  Sometimes it bothers me and sometimes it doesn’t.  For the most part, it makes me feel pretty rad because I look like a vampire! LOL

  • That is so STUPID. I never had a gap tooth, but I did have braces. What losers.

  • o.o Nope. Gaps are gross. get it fixed. i don’t want to see bits of your chewed up food hitting me in the face.

  • Yes I liked to fixed gaps I might have in my mouth.

  • Dave Letterman’s time has come.

  • had one.  got it fixed.  never regretted it!

  • Depends on how big the gap is..

  • I always had a small gap between my front teeth they were set in sort of a “V”.  When they did me for dentures…they put it in :? )  Guess they were satisfied.

  • No – unless it was hugely disfiguring.

  • if i had a gap i would definately fix it. i had braces when i was younger and im very proud of my straight teeth

  • Habitual tongue-thrusting against the back of the front teeth during formative years is responsible for much of this gapping.

  • I’ve always had a gap. Oddly enough, as soon as my wisdom teeth started coming it, it squished the gap to being fairly unnoticeable. There’s technically not enough room in my mouth for my wisdom teeth, so the rest of my teeth are no longer straight, but the gap is gone.
It never bugged me though. I thought I looked cute. :p Haha, once I got a fork stuck between my two front teeth, though. Talk about ouch!

I think this trend is stupid. Leave your teeth alone, you crazies!
    ~V

  • My sister has a gap and it’s really cute, but my dentist says I have a perfect smile (without braces!) so I’ll keep it!

  • I would get it fixed if I could. I am proud of my teeth and wouldn’t put one in on purpose.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - i’m gonna stick my bone up your nose.

  • I don’t think I’d fix it, but I wouldn’t create it either.

  • I have about half of my teeth left and I have many gaps.

  • Yeah, gap tooth is ugly and hick.

  • Some people are so pathetic, that they resort to having to follow the latest stupid trend!  I take it that these are some young women following this trend being that the link to the site is about the fashion industry.  *Facepalm*

    @musterion99 - LOL!  ♪Fall into the Gap!♪

  • @ShimmerBodyCream - Actually pubes get stuck between the teeth without gaps and it’s not always easy to get them out. lol Of course I’m talking about experience with girls who don’t wax. Waxing there is a relatively recent trend.

  • Theres a trend?

  • In Europe, they recognize Americans by their “perfect teeth”  There is something to be said for a little variation in the way our smiles look.

  • I did and I did. I hated that gap when I was little. Everyone insisted I had lost a tooth even when I told them I hadn’t. “Yes, you did!” they would say. “I THINK I KNOW MY OWN FLIPPING MOUTH!” I would want to say, but I was too young and didn’t know the f-word or any variations of it.

Blech. That gap was nothing but ugly. Between cosmetic surgery, a spacer, braces, and a retainer, I’m happy to say it’s GONE. I’d be off my rocker to ask for it back.

  • Former Giant’s linebacker Michael Strahan is the only person I’ve seen who looks cool with a gap tooth. He’s got a great smile and the gap seems to accentuate it.

  • Why would anyone want to purposely put a gap between their teeth?!!

  • @complicatedlight - You keep your bone to yourself!

  • did have a gap and i did have it fixed… got braces for it but since i have lost my retainer it is starting to come back. i am 28 now and had my braces at 11 but i want it to stay closed.

  • I have one and it’s hereditary. Mine doesn’t bother me so much because it’s not too wide. My daughter’s was wide enough for a tooth to be there and we got it fixed with minor oral surgery and some time in braces when she was young. It bothered her a lot because people were always commenting on it, thinking she’d lost a tooth.

  • Gap teeth make me cringe. Just sayin’.

  • How is this even remotely attractive? And why in hell would you gap your teeth on purpose?

  • @ShimmerBodyCream - Pubes get caught in crowded teeth. They pass right through gappy ones.

  • WTF I’VE HAD A GAP FOREVER AND HAVE ALWAYS HATED IT

    NOW IT’S A FUCKING TREND?
looks like i’m automatically trending guys ;D

  • I think it’s absolutely adorable on women, such as Eve Myles. It’s better than the horse-teeth look a lot of women get from braces. But to do it on purpose? Not so much. That’s like getting freckles tattooed to your face. Freckles are cute. Fake freckles are… well… fake.

  • How funny as I had a natural gap fpr years and was extremely self conscience about it. Some even made fun of my gap! I had it fixed around the age of 21 pr 22. Figures it would now be the ‘in’ thing…lol

  • I’m gap-toothed.  I hope to one day get invisalign or whatever and get it fixed.

  • Gap? Yeah…no thanks.

  • @musterion99 - LOL i see what you did there.

  • effing disgusting.

  • @Losertastic - I wondered if someone would get it.

  • @bluepillorredpill -  LOL!  ♪Fall into the Gap!♪

    haha

  • Not necessarily, but I wouldn’t put it there on purpose, either.

  • ok, i don’t see why you’d get a gap in your teeth on purpose. but me and the gap in my teeth get along swimmingly. i never wanted braces. i never wanted “straight teeth.” so no, i wouldn’t get them fixed.

  • I have had a gap between my teeth my whole life.  You’re telling me I’m now trendy!  LOL!

  • Magibon syndrome, eh?

  • that’s like the crooked teeth trend in japan…

  • I would have fixed it to I think but in another point of view  teeths are a personal appearance and should be left to keep your unique look.
Some people may look better iwith a glitch between their teeths =)

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Your comment exemplifies the prime problem with America today.  (Specifically, the idea of “class.”  If our government retains the original statement that “all men are created equal,” then “lower class” and “upper class” cannot reasonably exist.)

  • i have a friend who has a gap, and her teeth are basically straight for never having braces, but i think she’s getting it fixed. it’s kind of endearing, actually.

  • anna paquin, anyone? she’s gorgeous. as for doing it on purpose, hell no.

  • Yes! I’d be soo self-concious because of it!

  • I wish I had a gap sometimes.

  • @Galbsadi - I don’t think that’s the case.  There are always rich and poor. And in the case of the United States there also exists a middle class. Only Marxists wish to get rid of classes.

In America a poor man can become rich and a rich man can lose everything and be poor.  Oh well, Obama has made sure that rich people get bailed out so they stay rich and that taxes and regulation are so onerous that poor people can’t get rich and stay poor.

And since it’s the middle class that has to pay for the rich man’s bailout there won’t be a middle class anymore.

You’re right.  I must have been hallucinating.  We all live in Obamaville now.

  • I don’t have a gap. Nor do I want one.

  • this is very interesting.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Typically, I’d only argue for a balancing of the upper class.  (Specifically, boost capital gains taxes to match those on wages, and apply the same restrictions [if not stricter ones].)  That said, it’ll never happen, because the upper class and high-dollar corporations have the lobbying power, and there are very few (if any) politicians that are not significantly funded by one (or both) of the aforementioned.

  • I had a gap until I was about 16 and went and got (probably unnecessary) Invisalign. I really loved my gap, though, I don’t know why I let them straighten it out…

  • bah, i hate this trend.

  • omg. i have a gap between my teeth and i FUCKING hate it. more than anything. i cant wait to save up and get it fixed. not only do i NEVER smile to show my teeth in pictures… im not a bad looking girl and it is the only thing wrong with me! so terrible…. those people smoke CRACK!

  • I really don’t like gap teeth. I have them and want them fixed.

  • I have a gap that’s like half a millimeter maybe less between my front two teeth.  The rest are all straight.  The dentist always tells me he can fix it for like $40 but I don’t do it, I think I’d look weird without it.  I would, however get a nose job and something done about my jawline.  I can’t stand the way eithe rof them look.

  • A gap tooth is one of my biggest pet peeves. I know some people can’t help it and can’t afford to fix it and thats cool whatever. But someone intentionally making a gap tooth? Ew. Gross.

  • In my youth I didn’t want or get braces like I should have. In my adulthood I have spent lots of money fixing my teeth. Why would anyone want a gap intentionally is beyond me. I guess to each his own though!

  • If you refer back to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, In the Wife of Bath she also has a gap tooth and according to my readings..

“Being gap-toothed was regarded in the Middle Ages as a sign of a strongly-sexed making one a disciple of Venus, the patron saint (!) of Love.

    indicating sexual desire.”

So this trend possibly traces back to history, Thought I would share that with you guys!

  • now that sounds kind of painful

  • I have a gap in my teeth naturally. So yay?

  • Duh. My mom didn’t spend hundreds of dollars on braces and other metal mouth contraptions for me only so my teeth wouldn’t be perfectly aligned and straight :D

  • >:P  I wouldn’t want a gap in my teeth like that!  I’d definitely go get them fixed.

  • My gap became smaller the older I got. I don’t mind it really and wouldn’t want to get it fixed

  • Yes, but first I would make music videos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJNFnhlaA9E

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - tattoos and piercings…. wow you are always so narrow minded in every comment :)

It actually fails to amuse anyone after a while fyi.

  • @petiteme_x - Tattoos were popularized by the thug culture in prisons and piercings come from primitive tribal cultures.  Civilized people recognize the folly of adopting primitive cultural practices and values.

That isn’t narrow minded it’s intelligence in action.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - You make it sound as if piercings and tattoos are such a low class “bad thing” to have ;)

And who said tribal cultures were of low class anyways?

  • @petiteme_x - Go try to live in Africa.  You’ll see what I’m talking about.  Civilization is civilized for good reason and it takes a lot of work to keep a culture civilized.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - lol. To the people in Africa I’m sure they consider themselves to be civilized, much like our ancestors did when they threw pee out of our apartment windows and connected our major sewer system pipes into lakes and oceans. Sure they don’t have the same luxuries available in Africa but the definition of civilized, I believe, is an opinion more than a fact as shown by yourself.

  • so she made herself look like a rabbit. on purpose.. i guess nowadays anything goes.

  • not that people with gapped teeth look like rabbits. I’m just saying she does. and the fact that people will go as far as gapping their teeth to keep up with the latest trend is just plain stupid.

  • Well that shows how stupid some people are.

  • @cdedodgethis -  exactly! i’m just gonna stay the way i am, kthx. this is dumb. people just accept yourselves! everyone’s friggin beautiful the way they are…

  • If it were big enough to cause issues, I’d like to have it fixed. But I have a very small gap in my teeth and I don’t care. My teeth look normal. I don’t see why people would want to make a noticeable gap though.

  • I wan’t to get rid of my gap.

  • I have a gap- [here] and I never thought of ever fixing it because it’s a part of me..and like my mole as well…

Though what I have is natural and my family has this gap..

  • I think that is really stupid.

  • I can see where people might try to pick it up as something to make themselves look less airbrushed. Otherwise, there’s no point.

  • Perfect teeth are a massive pet peeve of mine. I hate they way they look. I had my braces removed as soon as they no longer served a medical purpose, so I guess that makes me a part of the “trend.” Except that I don’t think you are actually actively participating in a trend if you have your own reason for doing something, even if the reason matches a trend.

  • some places in africa they actually knock out their two front teeth because they believe it looks beautiful.

  • I have a gap and I’m happy to see models and stars with them these days. Lara Stone is the biggest model in the world and also has a large gap. Anna Paquin on True Blood, etc. All types, people.

  • i have a gap and so do my brother’s. the youngest brother has braces, lucky him. we are all cursed with ugly teeth. /:

  • i want my teeth fixed right now I HATE MY GAP imma get it closed in doe sunna or latta

  • I’ve always had a little gap between my two front teeth. I like my face as it is, and wouldn’t change it, but it’s just idiotic to do something like this to your appearance for some stupid trend. What are they gonna do when tooth gaps are out of season? Get another expensive procedure to fix it? Maybe just stick some Chiclets in the space?

Mark my words, the day is coming when the world will implode from the weight of it’s own stupidity. Any time now…

  • My brother had a gap in his teeth (we always called it his letterman gap), and before he went off to college he got the gap filled in. I loved it, I thought it fit his character so well (such a funny guy), but he was so uncomfortable about it. Barely ever showed teeth when he smiled.

  • i had gaps in my teeth and they didnt really bother me so i didnt want to get them fixed but my parents insisted and made me get braces to get them fixed…. so i dont have gaps now but i certainly wouldnt want to have gaps if my teeth were straight to begin with….

  • î used to have a gap, and got it fixed.

  • I had a gap tooth, and i got it fixed.

  • yes. i’m getting rid of my gap currently. it involves me wearing braces for about 3 years, and having two jaw surgeries to re-aline my teeth/jaws so they still fit right. i hate gaps.

  • I’ve had a small gap in my teeth since I was little, it’s never affected my speech or self-esteem, I see it every day when I brush my teeth and still hardly ever think about it. How it could be trendy? Boy, I sure don’t know. Unless there’s something really apparent (more than merely a gap) I don’t typically notice someone’s teeth, so if there begins a series of dental fads, I’ll be even more behind than I already am.
Getting it fixed? If there were a free and instant solution to it, I might consider it. But since it’s not actually detrimental to my health or well-being, I’m not going to go out of my way to cure it.

  • @petiteme_x - No they don’t. They would do anything to make it into Europe or the US.  Africa is a shit hole of pestilence, bone grinding poverty and disease. I contribute $100 a month to a Catholic village in Nigeria.  My money buys fuel for the generator that powers the village water pump.  There are 3 fountains in the village. No plumbing.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Really now… and you’ve gone to Africa and asked every child/adult if they are truly unhappy? You’re a victim to the commercials of the world. Isn’t it interesting how we never really see any commercials about the singing and culture going on in Africa? ;)

  • wtff. i used to have a gap & i got braces, i really hhated my gap.

  • Ugh yes, I have a gap between my teeth and I HATE it. I would do anything to get it fixed. I find this trend interesting but weird.

  • @petiteme_x - There’s plenty of information available about almost any part of the world these days.  And Africa is famous for being a shit hole.

  • @Queen_of_You188 - A dentist can file them. Madonna Had it done years ago when it was in style. Later she had her gap bonded back together :)

  • I don’t get this. If your teeth are fine naturally then there is no need to fix it I think, unless you really want to. I have small spaces between some of my teeth and I’m used to them now.

  • Really, some dentists will do that kind of surgery for purely asthetic purposes? I can’t imagine they got in the field for *that*; then again, people are desperate for money.

  • I actually have a gap between my two bottom front teeth, and I would not change it for the world.

  • Didn’t Lauren Hutton do that?

Anyway, that is weird. If I had one naturally, that would be one thing but i wouldn’t have it done, nor would i have a rib removed or any of the other insane nonsense that goes on in the “Hollywood” O.R.

  • I have a gap, and I desperately need braces. The thing is it’s cute to be a teenager and have a gap. But once your old it’s just weird looking….

  • i had a gap and had it fixed. i think my life is better because of it.

  • I have a small gap, It’s not big but you can notice it. It doesn’t seem to bother me and I have gotten many gorgeous men and they like it so What the heck [=

  • Ew that’s so gross. I’m so obsessive over teeth. I hate when they aren’t straight or they have gaps. I hated my teeth until I got braces.

  • I had a gap but my braces fixed it

  • I was so glad when the braces came off my second year of college and my gap was fixed! I can’t imagine this being a trend…

  • Y treth are really small so I have several gaps where some teeth aare just so small. A long while back I was told about on of the… Cheetah Girls got a gap put in her front teeth so that she were more “normal”.

  • I hate the gap.

  • braces?

    true blood imitation?….okay then.

  • I have gaps between my top row of teeth, I think it’s like 8 of them. I used to really hate it, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that it kind of matches me. I would look weird without a gap. I’m not too sure about getting a gap. That would be kind of ridiculous. People need to appreciate how they look naturally :)

  • I’ve always had a gap between my front two teeth.

I’ve always hated it.Yes, I want it fixed. But, I’m too lazy to get it fixed.Besides, it gives me something to bitch about xD

  • I do have a small gap between my teeth, and besides it being not all that aesthetically appealing, it sucks massive, hairy balls when food gets stuck between them.

  • I have a very tiny gap in my front teeth, and i went to the dentist once asking of he could fix it. he said “i like it, your teeth have character.” I laughed and went home, but when I thought about it I really agreed with him and now…i love my gap! :)

  • Dear goodness, why would you want a gap in your teeth? If you don’t mind having one naturally, if it doesn’t interfere with your day to day eating, why fill it in? However why would you want a gap in your teeth?

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - Civilized compared to whom, bitch? Your uppity overinflated sense of worth because you have running water, dental care and Western sensibilities? There’s a whole world out there and you do not get to condemn other cultures as lesser and primitive because they don’t adhere to your standards. You’re the worst type of people, honestly. So incredibly narrow-minded and haughty.

  • @needleontherecord - Civilized compared to the West, the greatest civilization in history. The world dances to the West’s tune.

  • Yes. I have a tiny one and I hate it

  • If I had one, I would fix it. I don’t know WHY you’d want to PUT on there, but I can understand people accepting them if they have it.

  • GOt my nice little gap, and i’m having no plans on fixing it

  • i have a gap and i fuckin hate it. i woudl have had braces long ago if my parents could afford it. i just got a job with dental coverage thank the lord so i have an apt to fix the stupid thing in dec. i CANT wait. i do not smile in pictures with my mouth open sincei  hate me teeth so much. people smoke crack

  • I used to have really crooked teeth, including a gap between my front teeth, and it was not cute. some people can pull it off, I guess, but not me. I had braces.

  • Okay, so, Vanessa Paradis is quite attractive, first of all.

I know plenty of people who have gaps in their front teeth and look great, and plenty who look god-awful. I would want it fixed, but not if it would hurt or cost a shitload of money. It depends how big it was.

  • Got more important things on my mind.  I also have two front teeth that are jammed together and crooked.  Not gonna go to the trouble to have the opposite problem.
