  • Katy Perry – Too Hot for Sesame Street

A segment featuring Katy Perry was pulled from Sesame Street because parents complained about her outfit.  Here is the link:  Link

Is the outfit too racy for children to see?

  • Gotta introduce it early.

  • barely covers her nipples…so yeah…and sesame street knows what they’re doing.

  • KATY perry.

  • Good lord, she’s wearing lingerie!

    ….

    no just kidding.

honestly? not something I’d mind my child seeing, I think. But, as a wise man once told me “all these silly beliefs about what you’ll think is and isn’t okay go out the window when you actually have kids.”

  • Katy Perry xD

and yeah it is a bit skimpy for a kids show

  • Needs more nipple slip.

  • Not really. And for her, that’s modesty at it best!!

    *sighs*

  • In this case, yes. She should have just worn a t-shirt or something but, shouldn’t that have been covered at the time of filming?

  • Sesame Street is geared towards Preschoolers.

If your preschooler knows that cleavage is “sexy”…you have more issues than what Katy Perry is wearing.

I know my preschooler could give a shit less about what a woman is wearing.

Edit: If you actually watch the video, the entire top is there. Its mesh, and skin colored. So yes you can still see some details but there are no risks of a wardrobe malfunction, and technically everything is covered.  Remember the 90′s anyone?

Edit Edit: For those saying it barely covers her nipples…did you study anatomy?

  • Don’t they see it on the TV all the time anyway?

  • Yeah kinda.  I wouldn’t  have made a big fuss about it though.  Most children who watch the show are usually 6 and under, so I doubt it would have made a big impact on them.  But yeah too racy for Big Bird and Elmo!

  • parenthood tends to do that to people

  • This is the only cleavage I was exposed to as a child: Click.

And I’ll be damned if they changed that because Katy Perry doesn’t know how to wear a fucking t-shirt.

  • For once I have to agree. This is a little too sexual for small children.

  • @forever_musing - Small children don’t’ know what sexual is…

  • I kissed a muppet and I liked it.

  • No but she could have been dressed a bit more modestly. Disney’s  Ariel HERE and Jasmine HERE  wear less than that.

  • I don’t think it’s necessarily an outfit meant for a childrens show. There are several other more appropriate things she could have worn. On the other hand, I wouldn’t have made such a fuss about it.

  • based on the picture i would have thought that it was not what i would have chosen to wear on sesame street.
but it’s a bit about playing dress up. it’s Katy Perry and it’s a song adapted for teaching kids. you gotta watch the bid and see it in context. it makes sense.
kids who would recognize her would see that it’s a celebrity who likes to dress up anyway!

  • @seedsower - THANK YOU!  That was the exact point I made in a little discussion I fired up on my Facebook.  Not to mention real people parade in Disney Princess outfits daily at Disney World.

  • @RainDropPixie - No they don’t, they learn sexuality from stuff around them, and a women dressed all sexy on TV for shows that’s for preschoolers will send the wrong message.

  • @forever_musing - How do they know its sexy, unless they’ve been conditioned to see breasts as sex objects (disclaimer: I’m all for sex play, but children shouldn’t have that concept down as a preschooler)?  So yeah, if you’ve told your child that cleavage is sexy, and dressing a certian way is sexy…then YEP that is exactly what they’re going to think.  My almost 4 year old thinks breasts are for food, and I intend for him to think that until he hits puberty.

  • no he see worse in walmart

  • @RainDropPixie - Idk, I take psychology (and plan to major in it once i’m in a university vs a comm college) and i’ve learned it doesn’t necessarily depend on how a parent raises a child to think about the human body to know what’s sexual or not. they just pick it up from everything around them. my mom never once even taught me about sex or a lot about my body in general but i just “knew” for whatever reason because of the kids i was around at school and how the media portrays it.

i mean once they learn to read and they see the fronts of magazines or something they see how “sexy” is applied to the scantily clad, and on tv and such. but i don’t feel much like debating this topic anymore. everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and i respect your thoughts on the matter. just extend me the same courtesy.

  • @forever_musing - I think its perfectly okay for kids to learn that eventually.  After the age of 6 is totally fair game for the beginnings of puberty.  But by that age (age of puberty not 6), they’re mature enough to be handling things of that type.  Ideally, by the time they have the concept of sex down…they should be mature enough to handle cleavage.  Before that point, they’re young enough to not notice, unless they’ve been conditioned other wise. And by “being conditioned” I am including some 4 year old going to preschool and telling all the other kids about something sexual.  At that age though, it is young enough to be corrected.  There are cases of parents conditioning their 3 and 4 year olds to know that a scantily clad woman is sexy.  The wonders of working in at risk child care and with CPS. Personally, I find it a bit sick to teach your daughter to “drop it like its hot” and teach your son to “objectify” women in general…but starting at 3 and 4 years old is quite maddening.  And I understand some parents outrage at the above mentioned outfit, most likely because their kids are in child care and have been exposed through other children.  But, I feel at that point, its a parents job to bit of damage control. I totally accept your opinion, I’m just sharing what years of Early Childhood Education and Development has taught me about children.

I do have to question the stylist for the outfitting of Katy.

  • I suspect that it wouldn’t occur to most preschoolers that the dress was a little racy. Then again, it kinda looked like Elmo was having trouble making eye contact…

And because of you I actually looked up the clip and sat through a Katy Perry song. As she wasn’t good enough to make it in contemporary Christian music, that wasn’t the easiest thing to do.

  • @RainDropPixie - No problem. I apologize if I came off as argumentative. I really wasn’t meaning to be. (I just got out of being in the ER for the second time this week, and all hopped up on pain meds, so I understand where I may come across wrong) Thanks for sharing your side and experience. I am always open to hearing and learning new things, since I will be the first to admit most of the time I know just about nothing (except about migraines, I know just about all this is to know about that from experiece.) I appreciate you challenging my thought processes (I also don’t have a child so that might also affect how I view the situation).

  • @forever_musing - I’m probably one of the more relaxed parents I know.  I’m very open with my child. I just find myself feeling very passionate about this subject, because I feel there are too many people sexulizing something that wasn’t intended to be sexual.  And it really makes me question the sanity of parents, if they are concerned about their preschoolers thinking/knowing that cleavage is sexy.

I mean I’m not going to lie, I’m between a D and a DD. I can’t live in turtleneck sweaters… cleavage just happens sometimes. I prefer not to show cleavage too often, just because I’m personally a modest person. But I mean, you see women in low cut shirts, sometimes tasteful…and sometimes questionable, everywhere.

To me, it is just a segment on a show. Its just a dress. And, maybe that is why my child views it the same, is because of my attitude towards it.

  • @RaVnR - Oh definitely, and I’m not going to lie, my son and myself live in our own little bubble. I plan on homeschooling, so we will remain in our own little bubble. So it is quite easy for me to control his surroundings. I was horrified during my days in childcare.  The things my 4 and 5 year old students did and said…were astounding.  It probably helped contribute to my choice to homeschool. I do make it a point to surround myself and my son with people from different back grounds and cultures. I don’t plan on over sheltering.

So I do see the concern for kids picking stuff up from other kids, but I think that is where parenting plays in (and once again I’m not going to lie, I’m not sure how I’d handle it if my son mentioned something being sexy) and damage control comes into play.

  • @RainDropPixie - GREAT POINT.

But they do imitate others, and some grown-ups will sexualize children..

  • Well, she could have dressed more modestly for Sesame Street, it is a kids show. Wondering why she is even on the show. Do little kids even listen to Katy Perry or know who she is?

  • Yes you corrected the Katy thing :3

  • I thought Katy looked adorable. For a 5 year old to see though the boobies could be covered a little more.

  • I think Katy Perry was just trying to see if Bert or Ernie could be turned on by women…

  • katy perry in lingerie is like miss piggy in lingerie

  • I watched the video, and I saw nothing worth complaining about.

  • This topic is so annoying.

All women have boobs, it’s a fact of life. I’m sure most kids see worse at the local WalMart and they sure as hell see less at the beach.

  • I’d play dress-up with Katy Perry any day.

  • not to be a prude, but yea, its alittle too much. Maybe if it didnt out line her boobs at the top, like if it went straight across it wouldnt be so bad, but the clevage is a bit much. Children dont need their daddy’s getting wood while watch elmo being chased.

  • Well, my two year old daughter loves sesame street. I doubt, though, that she would notice or care, at this point, lol.

I do think they or she could have picked a more appropriate outfit for a kids show, though.

  • It’s not as though we don’t all spend the first bit of our lives with our faces in someone’s breasts anyway.  It’s a dress, she’s not naked.  Should kids be kept from the beach because there are people in bikinis there?

  • so inappropriate for little kids

  • not exactly, but you’re on effing sesame street, put some clothes on, who are you trying to impress?

  • how can anyone take this question seriously.

  • As a parent, I don’t care a hoot about what she’s wearing, but I don’t like her bitchy voice or what she’s saying (in this song, and especially her others). Let’s face it, Katy is really not exactly an updated  ”Wiggles.” My guess is It was probably easier for PBS to say it was the clothing rather than the star and her body of work.  “I kissed a girl” & “teenage dream” are really, reallynot good songs for kids! The producers would have looked like true buffoons for having  Katy on as a guest. I wanted to shut the radio when teenage dream came on in the car — driving w/my 11 yr old — but I was too late!

    We drove to Cali
And got drunk on the beach
    Got a motel and
Built a fort out of sheets
    I finally found you
    My missing puzzle piece
    I’m complete
Let’s go all the way tonight

  • Children need to see cleavage too!

  • @silentcrisis24 - ha ha! I took it seriously (see my comment just after yours)

  • it’s probably sesame street for adult (18+) . HHAHAHAHAHA

  • Tinkerbell wears the exact same thing!

  • i dont see the reason behind wearing that…i could see if she were on an adults show but its for kids. why wear that

  • I don’t think her outfits that big of a deal but when I first saw the video I was a bit surprised that the people at Sesame Street were ok with it. I wouldn’t have any problem playing it for my nieces or nephew.

What REALLY bothers me is this new age sesame street. What’s this cartoon nonsense???

  • she is showing a little too much. I think it would have been better if she had her shoulders covered.

  • Now, to be fair, I’ve seen alot more Moms show more cleavage around theirs and other people’s kids.  I rather thought the video was cute.

  • If they are really young they wouldn’t see anything wrong with it….if they are school age…they already know….have you seen some of the Barbie Doll outfits?  If every thing else was within lines, no bawdy jokes, or allusions to anything  improper…let it run.

  • It isn’t bad, but she could have covered up a little more and still been cute.

  • @suggestivetongue - Said exactly what I was going to say!

  • It’s not the issue that it’s too much for the kids – the kids wouldn’t have thought anything of it either way, it’s more too much for the parents.  As attractive as Katy Perry is, this looks kiddish.

  • Katy Perry is a talentless tramp. She knew damn well she was going to appear on Sesame Street that day, but yet she chose to wear that outift. It was inappropriate for what she was doing. It’s not like they just pulled her out of Starbucks and said “Hey, do an inpromptu guest spot on Sesame Street, will ya?” She chose to wear something that shows off her boobs. She’s talentless AND dumb. And she can’t sing for crap.

  • It is cleavage showing, but you cannot see a thing so I would allow it, kids are hardly going to be sitting there wanking whilst watching are they?

  • @fargoneandout - I think it needed approving first, by the costume team- duh. Just because she has nicer breasts than you, you now have your knickers in a twist.

  • Her high beams are on…

As a man, I see no problem with it. Yes, I would watch it with a child down the street that I was sittin for or watching it with my cousins…however, as a father, I have a massive issue with it. I don’t need me 2 year old walkin around yellin out “TATAS!!!” and trying to look down everyone’s shirt to see if we have what Katy Perry has. It’s inappropriate for preschoolers, especially those that are “scary” smart to watch something like that.

  • @wildcircusdreams - ”Just because she has nicer breasts than you, you now have your knickers in a twist.”..And you know this how? The topic at hand is Katy Perry and her choice of outfit for Sesame Street. Your rebuttal citing my alleged lack of boobs is invalid, especially since I have no picture of myself posted. Stick to the topic at hand and leave your theories as to what you think formed my opinion out of it.

  • Barbies are racy too.. and what about them Bratz dolls? “American’s are such control freaks” – a quote I hear/see a lot, haha

  • I don’t think it should of been pulled.

@betterdesigned - Exactly Sesame street knew what she was wearing during the filming process and they didn’t have a problem with it then. @opster25@momaroo - I know that’s right

  • @jmallory - They probably do, but not on a show dedicated to children.

  • Its too revealing for a kids show. This type of clothing should be banned for this type of show. Little kids dont want or need to see this at an so early age.

  • Um, yes. I wouldn’t want someone looking like that in FRONT of my child, why would I want her to see it on T.V? I mean really, what were they thinking?! I think it’s hilarious that they think that’s an OK thing to wear in front of a bunch of toddlers.

  • @somuchx33 - What you said.

  • @somuchx33 - I think the reason people support Barbies but not Katy is that the point of Barbie is to indoctrinate kids with what men (supposedly) want, whereas Katy dresses this way because she wants to.

  • @wildcircusdreams - What you said, but also: kids wank anyway, preventing Katy is not going to prevent wanking. Of either gender.

  • @itangel - No prob with her chest, but her shoulders need covering?

  • @Babylons_Crowing - What you said. I don’t even see the point of swimwear in general.

  • @jmallory - What you said.

  • Ha, I don’t see anything wrong with it, and personally, I don’t think preschoolers would understand why they couldn’t see it. They’re preschoolers.

Anyway, that’s our Katy, it wouldn’t have been Katy if she had thrown on a t-shirt. That’s why we love her. :)

  • Just don’t surrender your kids to the T.V. from conception to eighteen, that’s what I always say.

  • @AlterEgo909 -  I just feel that if parents are going to sit their kids in front of a tv all morning (in a culture where modesty is dying away at a rapid rate, this is the kind of consequence they will have to deal with. It’s so unfortunate, isn’t it?

  • you never post anything original

  • No, without any sort of prior sexual knowledge, there’s no context with which children can sexualize her image. It reminds me of this image where you’ll see an intimate couple as an adult with knowledge of that, but as a child all you’re likely to recognize are the dolphins.

  • Not sure if it’s too much for a child to see on TV.

  • I wish she was the host of when I was a kid.

  • Really?…Okay. Disney Princesses, and Jessica Rabbit. Enough said.

  • I have it on good authority that boys as young as six are little sex demons.  They love the naked female form, especially a booby one.

  • @seedsower - You’re absolutely right. Go visit Ariel and Jasmine in Disney World and they’re showing a heck of a lot more skin than that! Plus, the entire top of her is covered with skin colored mesh. Furthermore, if your toddler is sexualizing breasts at that age, THAT’S ON YOU.

  • that’s a tinkerbell dress up outfit… which was the point of the segment.

was i the ONLY one that caught that?

  • While the see more skin than that at the mall or at the pol, or gravy, in some schools even, that’s not really appropriate for Sesame Street.

  • @fargoneandout - I never made a rebuttal citing about your lack of breasts I never mentioned the quantity that you had on your chest, I just said she had nicer ones than you, heck I don’t even know what gender you are/ were for real, I just know that you have breasts no matter your gender. re-read and you will see I never said you had a lack of breast. Now I did say you had you knickers in a twist because you came accross as all bitter, for all i know you may have boxers or some other kind of underwear on, or maybe even none, so I am sorry for expressing and assuming that you had you knickers in a twist, and that your breasts are not as nice as KP’S, I should be more specific next time. But I still think you should use common sense and realise that behind any big show such as Sesame street, they have many people that could have dissaproved the outfit choice, and that outfit choice would have been made primarily by the costume team not Kp, she just agreed to it.also as for my ‘theories’ they are opinions just like your ‘theories’ in your comment about KPs talentless trampiness :) so maybe it would have been best if you never commented in the first place because you just contributed to theories that were not about KPs outfit choice, the question in hand was about her outfit choice not whether she had talent. :) Night Princess

  • I don’t think that outfit is that bad. I see kids wearing something similar all the time. The parents overreacted.

  • It’s really no big deal. I think parents are being huge babies. She doesn’t have huge knockers. It’s kind of normal cleavage, and the top is actually skin colored mesh, so it is technically covering her whole body. And it’s cute. Grow up parents. Little kids wouldn’t even pick up on that stuff.

  • No one made a fuss when Tinkerbell wore that outfit.

  • if that were on TV I wouldn’t let my kids watch it.

  • I honestly don’t think I myself would’ve thought twice about that outfit until the others made a big deal about it, and if I had children, I would’ve definitely let them watch it. As far as I know, children young enough to watch Sesame Street aren’t thinking about cleavage and what have you, they just want to see Elmo sing songs with people. I heard the song btw, it was cute and 100% appropriate for kids. Plus, on top of that, she WAS playing dress up.. which was the point of the entire thing. Parents need to lighten up and stop acting like it’s still the 1940′s.

  • I wouldn’t mind my daughter seeing Katy Perry on television. Shit, she listens to hear music everyday with me, haa.

  • Children dont see things the way adults do.

  • I watched the whole video.  I didn’t think there was anything wrong with it at all.  If you do, I would highly suggest you don’t take your kids to any public beaches, ’cause Katy Perry is covered up way more than most people at the beach, lol.

  • the outfit wasnt that that bad because you could see the nude covering she wore under it i just didnt think the skit was good like at all…the song seemed a little too old for children at that age and i just didnt like her performance she was too like over dramatic like i know its a kid show but she was a tad overboard.

  • Wouldn’t Sesame Street have approved the outfit beforehand or supplied her with something? I wonder if this was a publicity stunt.

  • @chadwilly - What you said.

  • @jmallory - I agree with you that people who sacrifice their kids to the T.V. god will have consequences and should have to deal with them. Although I think modesty is changing, not dying.

  • I’ve seen worse cleavage on Disney princesses.

  • People in other countries cannot believe what goes on here in the US in the name of “morality”.

  • @a12906 - I can agree with that.

  • It doesn’t look that bad to me.

    And I’m a Muslim!

  • I’ve said this elsewhere, but why is Katy Perry’s LACK of cleavage and showing collarbones an issue?  The top of her dress is like what an ice skater would wear.  OH NOES!  MY CHILD WILL SEE IT AS SEXUAL!!

No, they won’t.  Unless YOU make it sexual.  Your child doesn’t need to know at the age of 4 that you have somewhat erogenous zones from your neck to  your belly button.  What they need to know is that it’s effing fun to play dress up, and that there are adults who freaking get it.
Oh, wait.  This is the USA.  NO PART OF THE BOOB MUST SHOW, OR IT’S VULGAR.  Give me a break.

  • for a children’s show, that’s too much boob.
