Internet Addiction
Many of you have probably already read about the college that banned social networks for a week.
They wanted to test how people responded to withdrawal from the social network sites. They indicated that some struggled with being kept off.
Some students reported more face to face contact as a result of the ban. But some students just used their phones to get around the ban. Here is the link: Link
If your college banned social networks for a week, would you just use your phone instead?

yes. oh wait, no…I don’t have internet on my phone.
My phone is way too shitty for that, lol.
I’d just go home.
Sure would. Not gonna lie.
My phone doesn’t have the internet, so no.
Probably. Everyone I know texts the shit outta me anyhow.
That’s stupid that they would ban social networking sites. How can they ban people from getting on, say, Facebook from their home computer?? Doesn’t make sense to me…but, then again, I didn’t read the link you posted. So, maybe it did work.
I would definitely use my phone. But then again, if it was a voluntary study, I wouldn’t use my phone at all. I’d just tough it out for a week.
WHILE I’M ON FACEBOOK MOBILE, HOW RUDE
I don’t have a phone =( At least my own one..I’m sharing with my bf..lol
No, I would not use my phone. I also recently deleted FB and feel much more free.
I don’t use social networking sites. I use the internet for porn.
Nope, I’d survive and enjoy the reprieve…I’ve done it before, I can do it again.
Hm, I would probably just go to Starbucks or something to use the internet.
Dear Dan,
From what I understand, the total amount of the student population at that college was less than your friends list.
Last year I was in the hospital for a week, and besides not having internet, I only had basic cable.
But it was a good tradeoff. I have a shiny new titanium hip.

@PervyPenguin - that reminds me, I have to cancel my subscription soon or else they’ll charge me for another month.
You can get internet on your phone? Wait, you’re talking about dial-up, aren’t you?
i tend to get laid more often.
I probably would if I had a phone that could, but I can also see myself going along with the study to see how I felt about it.
What does that say about our generation? If we can’t even go a week without going on social networking sites…
@baldmike2004 - LOL.
Luckily I have internet on my phone. All I remember is being in CA for five days without a computer. And I forgot my phone charger. So I barely was able to use my phone to get on FB and other things. I absolutely hated it.
i’m not in college anymore. but i probably would
Most likely, but it’d be a whole lot less than using the PC.
A ban like that is stupid. Internet is the new TV: everyone is supposed to prove they can do without it for a week.
You bet I’d use my phone.
They should have tried banning them for a week. I can picture the scenes of students going into withdrawal.
I’d use my phone to crank call people. Hey, I have to be entertained somehow.
I don’t have internet on my phone so I couldn’t. But I would if I could.
Nah. There weren’t too many social networking things back when I was in college and I did just fine. When I was on vacation recently I had only sporadic internet service. I checked facebook on my phone about once a day, on the off chance something important was happening. (There wasn’t, it was mostly to get my brain away from my family)
I think I could go without social networking/the internet for a week or so. It’s not like I haven’t got books to keep me occupied, or, hey, I could do productive things or actually leave the house for a bit, lol. (Omg, sun…I’m melting!!!) I’m pretty good at keeping my brain busy.
My phone was $9 at Walmart. I’m lucky I can even make phone calls with it.
Actually, I don’t use any social networking sites, anyway. I mean, I have accounts on everything, I just don’t ever, y’know, sign in. Unless I’m spying on people I know. I think I may be doing this wrong.
I sure would.
probably. I hate being told what to do! lol
One of my cousins is a freshman at VMI, during hell week you get nothing. You can’t even call home.
My phone doesn’t have interweb.
But I’d probably up the text charge.
@PervyPenguin - haha, agreed.
My current college has put a block on Myspace, but I’m not sure about Facebook and Twitter. Since its a small college and theres no on campus living spaces, I guess it doesn’t matter to me.
I guess it would suck if you go to a college that’s far away from your friends and family and you can’t get in contact with them, unless you use your phone.
yeah, they can add this to my chart. I don’t like not being distracted. Eventually, life will fill in the void but until that point, it’s almost unbearable. Plus, I had people after me, and I try to explain so that I wouldnt’ get trapped.
How do I respond to no internet? Well, I get locked up periodically, and it’s odd because I have to deal with a sterile reality. I have a difficult time not doing things. I’m naturally overactive. So, if I’m not on the internet, I’m doing something. I start writing out word lists, or I’ll do a puzzle, or I’ll start playing with numbers, I’ll walk forever. I don’t do anything that great, and I’ll be everywhere. I had a lady reply once that she’d never seen someone so many places in a day. After my grandparents die and school, I thought about trying to find a factory or something to work in, but without damaging materials because I don’t want anymore issues. I have to be active.
It wouldn’t make much difference to me. I mostly use the internet at home.
The sad thing is that they never heard of xanga, and therefore don’t know to ban it.
Honestly, if I were the head of the college, I’d rather my students be chatty on Facebook and Twitter, as opposed to being drunk at some frat party.
I have internet on my phone, but I prefer using computer because it has bigger screen. So I guess I wouldn’t
I’d go on a road trip. I don’t need much of an excuse for that.
Don’t know, didn’t have internet when was in school
I would live. I’ve gone months without internet it’s not a big deal to me.
Yes I certainly would use my phone instead.
eh. yea id probably use my phone.
O.O = ( I would go around it if I could. I guess there’s always coffee shops… I don’t think I’m at the place where I would cry though. I’m not as addicted anymore. (this just shows what 2.5 months without the internet will do)
@emptyspiral - There are some programs that go beyond knowing what site to block. They block by content and genre.
I wouldn’t care if I couldn’t use Facebook for a week, but I’d die without Xanga.
it’s good to have time away from technology. period.
I get the impression that it was an experiment known by the students ahead of time…As long as they gave me one days notice in order that I could let family I was going to be off line a week so they wouldn’t worry, I have no doubts that I could do it…I also have no doubts that I wouldn’t like it…but I could do it…I read books and wrote journals long before I had a computer.

If there was wifi I could use my iphone or ipod touch. And yes, I probably would.
Noooo. It’s easier than you think. I had to go somewhere for two weeks without access to internet or phones– and I loved it. Thought it might feel different if you can open your hotmail to recover files but can’t reply to that darn comment on xanga…
my college just blocked facebook, someone made a “gossip girl” kinda page there. But I have a different internet connection, a private one.
I don’t live on campus, so I could just get on them anyway, but yes, I would just use my phone. I use Facebook and Twitter on my phone on a daily basis anyway, haha.
banned social networks? wow, you losers must have had a tough time
Nope, wouldn’t miss it much either, I might at first but it would be fine soon after.
I could live without the “wonders” of the internet completely for however long anyone asked me to—and social networks would be even easier to live without! There have been points in the last couple of years where our computer wouldn’t be working or the internet would be down and we’d go weeks–and at one point even months–without even having a computer. It really is nice. Internet does provide definite conveniences for day to day life, and social networks are a nice way for me (somewhat of a recluse) to stay in touch with people, but I could totally live–and I don’t just mean survive–without the internet
Yep! Facebooking is an important part of my day lol
I wouldn’t say I’m addicted to facebook, I like it a lot but I could certainly live without it.
I am, however, addicted to the internet. very much so. I doubt I could function without it, which makes me really sad.. :
No because I dont have Internet on my cell/mobile phone and mine is a basic phone which is for emergencies only. I don’t even like using a mobile phone or phones in general.
@airbornerose - I recently deactivated mine… And then got a call from the school psychologist’s office wanting me to go in for an ‘evaluation’ because people were reporting me shutting down my facebook and they were concerned I was harming myself. I know I’m not the most emotionally stable person alive.. but really?
@Invisible_Crazed_Chica - I got a lot of concern when I got rid of mine, too. Sad, sad day… haha.
of course.
I get upset when out internet goes down!
If it wasn’t a voluntary experiment on my part, I’d be disgusted that the college would inflict an experiment on me – the paying customer to a megabuck industry. I can only use internet on my phone with WiFi, and that is not my preferred way of using the internet. I’d use the internet whatever way I could, including Facebook and Twitter, or I would demand the ability to do so as the customer.
I don’t think I’d use my phone coz that’s expensive.

yep. why have a phone with a browser and FB access if I’m not gonna use it?
Of course.
Yeah i probably would…
I’d play along. No telling what doors might open. I’d like to read about significant things that happened in the lives of some who didn’t use.
I’ll research it later.
