Mark and Facebook
I was just reading an article in The New York Times about how some people view Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, and will see him as someone to admire him while others will denounce him.
Mark is the subject of a movie called “The Social Network.” I went to the movie this last Friday and I just loved it. My wife hated it.
In the movie, Mark is portrayed as a guy who was willing to step over friends and other people in order to get to the top.
My favorite parts of the movie were related to him hacking email lists so he could blast Facebook out to others. I have always thought xanga should be more aggressive about getting email lists and sending them out.
Even if the movie is not totally accurate, Mark probably had to break a few rules to get ahead. So I am not in favor of stepping over friends but I am in favor of breaking imaginary rules.
Do you tend to admire Mark or denounce people like him?

I don’t think someone can make it to the top without crushing others.
I don’t give a damn because I don’t have a Facebook and I’m not going to waste my money watching a movie about the creation of a stupid, over-used website I don’t even care about.
I think he created something amazing, and he also had to fight a lot of people trying to step over him to do it. I definitely admire him.
All your privacy is belong to Mark.
I’d admire the man.
@MagisterTom - LOLOL
The rules against hacking aren’t imaginary.
Other than that, I do think it’s great that someone can still build a corporate empire in this era. It should just be done ethically.
I don’t know him so I can’t really admire him or not. Whatever he did it worked. If he destroyed friends to get where he is then that’s sad.
@PervyPenguin - I love you.
I’d admire him (: because he has created something fabulous. He connects people around the world
I don’t know him, and I’m not going to base my opinion of him off a movie. I think he created a great thing, and the negative aspects of Facebook come from those who use it, not him. FB helped me find a lot of old friends and it really does help people connect. You can’t deny that.
If he’s like his creation, I’m not a fan. I wouldn’t go so far as to denounce him.
I admired David Fincher. Until The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. What was up with that movie?
don’t like the way he wanted to get into the club so badly, but the fact that he was so passionate about the computer/programming/anything is very admirable. His creation is amazing
I used to admire him, until Farmville spammed Facebook. Now I denounce him for setting up a website that encourages spam.
He’s a mythical creature. Have you ever seen him?
“So I am not in favor of stepping over friends but I am in favor of breaking imaginary rules.” <– Agreed!
I do admire Mark to some degree for doing some of the things he had to do to get Facebook out there, but at the same time Facebook is something of a monster of an open book. If you don’t know how to set your privacy settings on there, you’re pretty much an open book just like Facebook…unless you’re not on Facebook.
You can’t get 500 millions friends without making some enemies! =P
What he created was not that original. People were on social network sites long before facebook—MySpace, Bebo and the like. I personally had more fun connecting with people on MySpace than I do on facebook, but since FB has evolved and pretty much everyone is on it, that is where a lot of people remain to do their “social networking”. IDK—facebook has actually gotten kind of boring. You can’t even personalize your page with stuff anymore like you used to be able to do. MySpace was more fun because you could make your page look however you wanted, and choose a playlist to play when people would view your profile. All that is gone with facebook.
I enjoy how self-referential this post is without out and out stating that you are the central figure of the Xanga story.
Top hole work, Dan.
he is my arch nemesis.
sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get ahead…
I’m not really in favor of stepping over people.
I’d rather step on them.
Admire. It takes alot to get ahead, and there’s no rules that can’t be broken.
I don’t really know whats the point of getting to the top if you can’t celebrate it with people who actually care about you.
I’d admire him.
Admire him him one way, but denouce people like him in some ways.
Yawn.
@SerenaDante - you also realize he is anti privacy i can google your real name and fine out everything about you. thanks to facebook anti privacy.
You do realize ” I have always thought xanga should be more aggressive about getting email lists and sending them out. ” Dan you are ridiculous…. Xanga will NEVER BE FACEBOOK……get over it.
@jenigrins - Yeah! That’s the spirit.
Neutral.
who cares what I think, he’s filthy rich!!!
I read this and many comments on it and have come to the conclusion that I have no opinion on the matter. Why am I commenting? I don’t really know. What was this post about again?
If he’s anything like the way they portrayed him in the movie, I totally admire him.
That guy was awesome.
@Jeremy_Sheer - doesn’t that depend on how much information you choose to put out on facebook?
@Jeremy_Sheer - You can google my name and find out everything about me from Xanga and thesop, not from Facebook, lol.
How can you NOT admire a guy who was able to create Facebook? Which is very popular & great… although sometimes it ruins lives! lol but seriously… who can you not?!
I know I would NEVER step over my friends though… wait. I shouldn’t say that cause I honestly don’t know what I would do in that situation. I would hope I wouldn’t though….
I’m ust… downright… jealous. I mean. Everything’s been done now. What else is there to invent and become a multi millionaire with?
1) I support actually seeing your opinion on something
2) I have no problem with Zuckerberg
@tsh44 - I agree. I can’t really admire him. per say. I just find it sad to set over people like that.
Admire
Imaginary rules? Hmmm….
Since I really don’t like Facebook, although I am glad that this guy was smart enough to think it, develop, and produce it, I thnk his time could have better been spent in other endevors…
If John had quit trying to act like Mark then maybe Xanga wouldn’t be dying.
Haven’t seen it, not gonna see it. Don’t use Facebook, not gonna use it. If it were up to me, I’d close the book on Mark Zuckerberg and his face. “Social networking” is one of the biggest scams in history. Technology that was supposed to bring people together has in reality driven them farther apart. Now, people sit in a room (or a car) and talk to others half way around the world while they ignore the people who are right there with them. People rush to get online to commune with their “online” families while ignoring the families God has blessed them with in their homes and neighborhoods.
I haven’t seen the movie. I’d be more comfortable judging the movie’s portrayal of him than the real him, but I can’t do that yet.
Great ridicule and great admiration go hand in hand with great accomplishments. It would be silly to suggest that Mark Zuckerberg has not accomplished something great. Regardless of the steps taken to create Facebook, Zuckerberg’s social network has directed and influenced the lives of more people in more ways then he could ever have anticipated. In light of this, it seems too provincial to judge him based on the intentions and actions he exercised on those near him (though their lives are no more or less important than anyone else’s).
So, how do you feel about Facebook, Dan? I (and I think a lot of people may agree with me) feel that “fb” is something of a double edged sword in the cultural landscape of the internet. It facilitates an unprecedented volume of communication, the benefits of which are obvious from both personal and socio-economic standpoints. However, this communication causes an unprecedented invasion of privacy. Employer’s and colleges having direct access to people personal lives, for example. Furthermore, this sometimes occurs regardless of the consent of the individual in question, as friends and relatives may post information regarding that person without thought to the consequences al la Michael Phelps. Also, the arguably unethical practice of data mining also facilitated by Zuckerberg’s creation is a further invasion of privacy, perhaps a greater invasion at that.
But I cannot deny that I am more connected to the comings and goings of the people around my, and with greater ease, then I had previously thought possible. I attend events, meet new people, and subsequently accomplish things that would not have been possible for me otherwise. I keep in touch with friends I would never have seen again.
I also see a lot of things I don’t want to, but they’ve got a fix for that. The newly implemented filter and grouping systems also allow me to control whose business I stick my ruddy little nose into, and whose inconsequential bullshit I would rather do without. While preferences of curiosity certainly don’t justify my nosiness, they do make it easier to think on the morality of my actions less. Knowing everyone’s business is becoming a function of modern internet society instead of a shameful endeavor reserved for bored members of the PTA.
It was once considered a sacrifice of privacy to have a telephone installed in one’s home. The world is changing. The question is, is it going where we want it to, or are we simply indulging a hedonistic need to pry into people’s personal business that may eventually result in some sort of secret-less society? Is that something we want?
What do you think?
Time will tell what effect Facebook will have on our world. Mark Zuckerberg’s legacy remains for the finishing. I couldn’t say how I feel about it yet (and to be honest I haven’t seen the movie). I hope it take a turn for the benefit of internet-land. Who knows, really?
I have not watched the movie and I’m not planning to, but hey, he’s made it to the top. It’s a story he can share with his kids someday
. I admire FB because it enabled me to connect to people, and that’s about it.
Believe it or not….. drum roll please….. I DON’T HAVE A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT! But the man is wealthy, so I’ll give him that….
I agree; you’re going to step on at least a few toes on your way to the top. While I don’t care for spam and getting such an email from him probably would have made me stay away from his site, obviously something he did worked. Kudos to him.
Seems rarely does someone acuumulate great financial wealth by being nice and honest and by staying within the confines of what is just and legal.
It’s a stupid movie. Why make a movie about social networks?
Anyone who can get that rich before they are out of school deserves my respect. If it means millions, kill them all!!!
I just don’t care.
Facebook was great like four, five years ago. Then Mark got greedy and fucked it up.
I don’t feel anything for him, neither admiration nor denouncation.
hate his arrogant attitude when dealing with the privacy concerns. he is a very successful person but he’s just not someone i admire.
He had drive and the ability to accomplish his goals. Ambition will always require someone be stepped on. It’s unfortunate but true.
oh, so he’s the reason why my grades suck at school, why our society is becoming more shallow, impersonal, superficial, he should not be smiling in that picture
i saw it and enjoyed it. you make some good points. may i please repost this as a guest entry in one of my blogs?
