Calling A Woman A Whore
Jerry Brown and his campaign are coming under fire after an audiotape was released that had one of his aides calling his Republican rival a “whore.”
His campaign has denied he was the one that said it but admitted that one of his aides called her the name.
In the article, a representative of Whitman said “The use of the term ‘whore’ is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California.” Here is the link: Link
I remember over 5 years ago posting a comment on xanga where a woman called another woman a “whore” on my site. People were so angry that they attacked the woman and she shut down her site.
But now it appears to me that people are less offended by the word.
So this is pretty much a question to women.
Are you offended when another woman is called a whore?

Only if I know the person, and know it be a harsh, unfair, false accusation.
I’m offended by most harsh, unfair, false accusations.
I kind of laugh, honestly. I say “oh, you whore” to my chick friends a lot.
Then again, this is California, so, sluttiness abounds…
I don’t care.
I don’t really like the word. I would be offended if someone called me a whore.
lolno. Why should I be if she’s the one being insulted?
It depends, if it’s used in a humorous way. it isn’t so bad. but, if they’re callin me a whore for well, being jealous… it’s freaking dumb.
I confess to being more offended when a man calls a woman a whore.
Some women say all sorts of stuff to each other. XP They could just be talking trash.
But when a man says it, he tends to really mean it. It seems.
Was it Jerry or an aide? And what about Meg Whitman, who hired an undocumented worker, only to fire her when it became politically expedient? Yes, I’m afraid I am offended by such slurs (as much as by racial slurs) — but they say that anything goes in politics ~ ~ ~
Well… is she a whore?
lol. But no, I don’t see reason to feel like insults are degrading to womankind in general. You don’t see women getting upset when you call a man an asshole and saying you’re degrading all men.
I don’t really use it, and depending on who is calling me it, I will be offended.
its a word. like pizza or word.. people are to sensitive.
my friends and i have been calling each other whores as joke since middle school.
i really don’t think it’s that big a deal, unless you are deliberately being immature and using the tired and very elementary technique of name calling when arguing in which case you are no better than the person you’re calling a whore to being with.
Not usually, but resulting to name-calling in politics is just petty and childish.
of course, we’ve learned to expect nothing greater than petty and childish name-calling from politicians, which is why voting season elicits so many eye-rolls from us.
I don’t get offended. However, if a good friend of mine was called a whore unjustly, than it pisses me off, but doesn’t offend. I get offended with the word bitch. Why, I have NO clue.
Yes, it’s an offensive word meant to demean. You would think by now politicians – and their aides – would recognize the power of words and choose them more carefully.
Yes. It’s just like a slap in the face.
a whore is someone who has sexual relations with multiple people. yes, that term is offensive because it’s a false accusation in some cases… i also think it’s disrespectful for other females to call each other that because they’re just “playing around”.
Depends on who says it and how they say it.
It depends on if she is or not. Like the women my husband left me for is a home wrecking whore. She only goes after men in relationships. If anyone were to call me one, I’d just laugh. But, it seems these days the worst thing you can do is be “judgmental”. It is a worse thing to be called a hater or a bigot (even if it isn’t true) than to be called a whore, it seems.
If it’s not true? Sure. And, well, lets face it… most people throw that word around (and many others) just to be hurtful and immature. There doesn’t have to be truth behind it, they just want to make the person mad and be childish.
If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck…
I actually wouldn’t use the word “whore” exclusively for a women. It works for most politicians, male or female, lol, as I think of it as referring to someone who “sells” out (morals/beliefs/whatever) for something in return (money/votes/etc)
I don’t think there is any reason to ever use that word honestly. There are more appropriate words in our language for anything anyone is trying to say.
I’m not too particularly fond of that word. It really is unacceptable when a guy refers to a female as a whore/slut/tramp. Even if it’s as a joke.
If i know the woman personally and the accusation is untrue, then i will defend her immediately. If it is true then i honestly will laugh at the insult and probably tell her to talk it with a grain of salt. Truth hurts sometimes lol. Just sayin lol.
Yes and know… If she really is a whore then well that’s her Job description. If she isn’t well then they should correct them selves and find a better insult because it just shows the person’s lack of respect and intellect….
Look at me acting like it matters. Well it does and it doesn’t. I’m not going to act like I have never said that about another women or a man…When you think about it though, it’s pretty wrong and shows that words don’t matter, when in fact they do.
(lol all this said for words and io have lack of vocabulary use. I guess I’m a hypocrite.)
It just depends but using the word isn’t very polite nor mature. And it can be defensive or offend someone else. There are more intelligent or mature words in the dictionary to use other than that.
If it’s true, I can’t say anything to defend her. If it’s not, I would speak on her behalf but that’s all I really can do.
Doesn’t bother me. It’s a word…has whatever importance you attach to it.
meh! i admit to be Xanga Whore. I am going around to EVERY person I could possibly and whore them into friendships with me.
call me any names. say anything you want. it isn’t what you said, it is how you say it.
oh and Dan, i love love love love your background! it is awesome. i already cant remember what your old background was but you sure had it forever! finally you made a change, nice going.
I’m offended that Jerry Brown is no longer dating Linda Rondstadt.
Although Warren Zevon did sing “Poor poor pitiful me” much much better
Well, No. A whore is a whore. And men can be whores too.
“The use of the term ‘whore’ is an insult to both Meg Whitman and to the women of California.”
WTF kind of argument is that.
It offends me if it’s maliciously stated for no reason.
As a politician and a supposedly upstanding person, shouldn’t they refrain from such immature language?
Do we believe that women are equal to men? We constantly use language that not only degrades women (think about the literal meaning of every swear word and who it is directed to) but shows what we think of them. Maintaining such terms maintains the system of inequality of women and it shows that 1) men don’t think women are equal to them and 2) women do not think they are equal to men. There is no excuse to use such terms even if it has a humorous meaning or another meaning or whatever. The fact that we use it means we haven’t changed our impressions of women.
No.
Whore? Most women aren’t smart enough to get paid for it. “Slut” is probably more accurate.
I am wth nyfemme if used in the sexually immoralistic sense…I don’t appreciate that kind of expression at all. However I more often hear it used as “disloyal”. So it does not upset me if someone is honestly called a social whore…flattering whoever can do her the most good at that moment…who can push her ahead; so to me a “whore” is someone that uses other people often ‘name dropping’ or ‘name calling’ the same person depending on her company at the moment.
I never wanted to be called whore
IT IS DEGRADING, unneccesary, our children are growing up and learning to accept “bad language” that it becomes “normal” everyday use, losing its true meaning…to me a WHORE is offensive, the same as BITCH..SLUT…whore = prostitute…even if I were a prostitute I would be offended. But then I belong to the third generation….Good English is a rarity even among politicians, who should be aware of giving a good example, politically speaking of course.
No.
I may get offended if another woman is called a c*nt though.
Depends on how serious the person is being. Some people use the word jokingly. I don’t tend to use it personally.
I’d still like to know whether you read all 3,000 comments you get everyday, or if you simply make controversial posts to get people at each other’s throats just for the fun of it…
If I was a woman, that would really piss me off!
I think there is a time and place for that…
no i’m not offended. if she’s a whore she is a whore. and despite my being as liberal as they come i do not think it was right for Ms. Whitman to be called such, unless in fact she is (which i personally don’t know because well I am not up to date on her love life patterns). if politicians on both sides stuck to the issues at hand, the fact as to whether ms. whitman is or is not a whore would really quite frankly be irrelevent. unless being a whore is in fact going to take time away from her political duties.
I don’t think its any big deal.
We’re all whores.
It depends on the woman, but most of the time, yes. I hate the double standards we have with genders.
Depends, context is key. It’s overused, though.
aw come on he was just mad and calling her a name. it doesn’t mean she’s really a whore. maybe by whore he meant “dumb bitch.” ….lol. i wouldn’t be offended if someone called me a whore, mostly because i know it’s not true.
Honestly, it is more offensive when a man calls a woman a whore. I think the reason is when a man says it, it is globally offensive to all women, while when a woman says it, it is taken as a catty name towards one woman.
Unless she is actually a prostitute, yes.
@PervyPenguin - I agree. It’s none of my business really.
I’m jokingly called a whore but again it’s just words and they usually mean nothing except to get a person angry. It’s how people take it..but then again. People are too sensitive..but in politics no? That’s childish and immature but then again. What isn’t politics?
Uhm, not really. Not at all. Most of the time though, people are kidding when they say it to me. However, I still doubt that I would be mad if someone flat out called me a whore.
I doubt that she’s a literal whore, but as a politician, I’m sure she’s been accused of worse. It’s not a big deal. If some stranger said I was a whore, I wouldn’t care. It’s not like the person knows me.
What offends me is that men used to treat women with more respect and politics is way out of control.
I’d rather be called a bitch because whore implies that I sleep around a lot, like a slut. And even slut is less harsh.
It seems the term is irrelevent to a woman like Meg Whitman. I think the word has lost meaning and people with no ability to construct a clever insult use it. Jerry Brown is a failure. I just received his all his voting crap and it says nothing about ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! I hope Meg wins but she won’t.
It’s not offensive if it’s true.
Depends on how that lady feels, and what she might have done. If she’s written a post about how she stands out on the street corner every night selling sex, then I probably would not see it as a problem if someone called her a whore. Lol. If it’s a completely uncalled for sort of comment, then I’d probably get up-in-arms about it.
I have never known a whore.
Sometimes it’s appropriate, most times it’s not.
It’s just rude. You shouldn’t call anybody names.
I agree with soapandshampoo. Its more hurtful when a man says it than a woman. Just because there’s that whole idea of men not understanding women and vice versa. Its a really degrading term and even when playing around I think every woman takes it closer to heart.
This is such an absurd pseudo-controversy, and it makes me weep for the state of American politics. Now instead of talking about the sleazy backroom deal Whitman cut to win support from law enforcement unions, we’re talking about an offhanded comment made by an aide – not Brown himself! – in a private conversation about that sleazy deal. Such utter nonsense.
It depends who is being called it and why. I think it’s out of place in politics! But I dont know the lady, so…
I have only called one woman a “whore” because she actually was. I have came close to calling someone else one out of anger but then I have ruined a friendship once the word has been said.
-Never if you care about someone-
I donno. Is she a whore?
I don’t use the word – politician says it all.
In this instance, it was clearly meant as an insult, so yes, I am offended.
good call nyfemme, I concur, you are right-on with your take on this “calling-a-woman-a-whore” question. All I can say to women is stop ‘owning’ this word. The word “whore” is descriptive. I agree that some politicians (gender exclusive) act like whores when they give themselves to whomever to get elected/re-elected. http://bit.ly/asklelaj @nyfemme -
I don’t really like the word but I’m not exactly offended by it either. I admit that I think less of people who use it, it shows an appalling lack of creativity on their part in dealing with a woman they don’t care for.
How can Language become such a Weapon.Nowdays words are so meaninless on thestreets. Its nice to find alretness somewhere? Possibly something to gibber about!
As with most other things, it depends on the context. It can be pretty offensive, whether it’s true or not. “Whore” is usually pretty derogatory— I mean, when have you ever heard the word used as a positive thing? Is it really fair to look down on a woman for her lifestyle choices when one doesn’t know how she came by them? Some research suggests that the greater number of women who sell themselves have been abused. If someone chooses to be promiscuous, whatever the reason, it’s really not nice to shun them, label them, call them names. Just like with anything else, prejudice causes problems. Even if you disagree with what a person does/says/is, it’s best not to judge. I hope I’m not being a hypocrite right now.
‘Whore’ is a stronger version of the expression ‘prostitute.’ It is used several times in the Bible where it is coupled with moral filthiness and described as an ‘abomination,’ something utterly loathsome to God. I strongly believe that this is one of a number of words that we should refrain from using, even when we feel they could be applicable. I think it is probably as bad as the word, ‘cunt’ when applied to a woman.
Yeah…I call my friends “whore” all the time so it doesn’t really bother me. But if someone said it in an offensive manner then yeah, I would be pissed
If u act like one then dats what u should b called. Check out “Let da Beat bang” by Hoody Mobb -http://www.reverbnation.com/play_now/song_5497841
My friends and I call each other “whores” all the time, female and male friends. Most people tell me and my sister that we should be nicer to each other. My sister likes to say that it’s done out of love.
I think it’s a little less appropriate unless you are close to the person. In this particular situation, I think that it was incredibly unprofessional. I am not familiar with either politician, so it’s not an opinion based on offense. I just think that the aid should have been more professional given his/her position.
Yes.
No…I got a pretty thick skin…you need it to survive.
I mean people are using this word all the time and not even witht the correct meaning these days. so it doesn’t bother me.
This is just one more example of the liberal double standard and how racism, sexism and general bigotry are a huge part of Democrat party politics. If a Republican had made a comment like that about a Democrat woman opponent they would be hounded out of politics.
i think it’s really just an ugly word. i don’t even use it jokingly.
If she is really a whore, then there is nothing wrong with calling her a whore. You are simply stating facts
Every woman needs a good pair of ugg boots in her wardrobe. If you live in a colder climate, invest in a warm pair of ugg boots or lined leather uggs . If you live in a cooler climate, style can be your most important consideration, rather than warmth. Whether you choose ankle ugg short or knee-high ugg tall , your feet will look great.
defintily. i hate that word.
It didn’t used to be offensive, like when the dying cowboy in the old Western asked for six whore-gals as pall-bearers.
men shouldn’t just through out words like that towards woman, it hurts on females behalf. However in some places they wont be offended by the word because comming from certain people it means nothing.
but good post keep it up.check out my post on Long relationship- http://ang3lic77.xanga.com/weblog/
It’s a word. I think that, for the most part, women take it with a grain of salt. The ones I know at least. I find being called a whore is such a meaningless insult. Someone can call you a whore all they want, but unless you do actually sleep around all the time it means nothing. It’s not like being called fat where it makes you all self conscious about your weight. If someone calls you a whore and you aren’t one, then they just look like an idiot because the only insult they could come up with is one that’s blatantly untrue.
If you are a whore and someone calls you out on it and you don’t like it then you either reconsider your lifestyle, or say you really don’t care if someone doesn’t like the lifestyle you’ve chosen.
It’s just a stupid insult.
There’s a good whore. And there’s a bad whore.
Being called an “attention whore” is a good thing.
Being called a whore because you like sex…is a bad thing.
So it all depends on …how the word is used while addressing you.
However, there is a word that’s worse. it starts with a C. If you use this in my house, you got kicked out on your ass, and you will never, ever be welcomed again.
Depends on who and the context for me. If it’s meant in jest, no I wouldn’t be offended, but if it’s meant in some insulting or demoralizing context, then yes I’d be offended and go on the defensive especially if it’s someone I know and the facts prove otherwise..
I’m not offended if she’s a whore.
It’s also common where I live for people to call males whores as well.
If you’re a whore, you’re a whore. A false accusation on the other hand is totally different.
Unrelated: I like your background.
@anonymiaous - Words have more meaning than anything else.
But no, I wouldn’t be offended bc I’m not a whore. Sticks and stones?
No. It’s just a word. My friends actually use such words as borderline terms of endearment.
I think it’s a fairly immature move, and I’d be more worried about the reasons and feelings behind the name calling.
If it’s true, I wouldn’t be offended. If it was a friend of mine or myself, and I know it’s not true, then I’d be offended.
If it’s said in any semblance of seriousness I don’t like it.
yes b/c that “insult” shouldn’t be an insult. it shouldn’t exist. who cares what women do with their sex lives? how many people you have or haven’t had sex with doesn’t determine whether or not you are a good person, and that’s the only thing that matters.
