My Birthday
I am turning 39 in just an hour and a half. (Edit: I am now 39).
I have been feeling sort of weird recently. It is related to my birthday. My wife went into full blown depression when she turned 30. I am not depressed but I am probably a little down. It is hard to put in words.

My guess is that things go downhill after 43, and then there isn’t much choice as to whether to be depressed, because your body gives you reasons to be – like vision, for example

Why are you feeling down? As long as you’re alive to see another day and have the opportunity to do better, to walk, to eat, to smell the roses, to spend time your family, to even get up in the morning…and lots of other things that you could or couldn’t do 10 or 20 years ago, you should be happy. Or at least content. Or at least just not feel bad about turning 39!!!! Which is so hypocritical of me as I am a little down about not being 16 or 18 anymore.

I understand people get depressed over various things in different life stages but hardships dont last forever & to quote a Shaggy song, “No matter how you’re sad & blue, there’s always someone who has it worse than you. Sometimes you gotta pay your dues. But dont worry just push on through!”.

Okay that didn’t help, did it? Ha. My aunt’s 50th birthday was a few years back and she had these little souvenir m&ms made up with words printed on them. Some of them said “Happy Birthday,” and the others said “Joan’s 29th,” and a lot of the decorations said “Joan’s 29th.” My last birthday I turned 29 (for the first time) and now I joke that I am the same age as she is.
You do still have enough breath to blow out all the candles, right? If not, just cheat and get a 3 and a 9.

When my friends and family feel old, I tell them that if someone were to walk up to them and shoot them in the head, think about their age: would they die young? They all say yes. So therefore you’re young.
Though that usually doesn’t cheer them up. Possibly that’s too morbid of a way to explain it.
My idea is that even if you’re 80, you can still consider yourself young if you have a childlike, youthful attitude.

Dear Dan’l, i am in the same age bracket so i understand the initial fears and anxieties of getting older. i have been going through some rough times recently unrelated to aging, but despite some of these challenges, these years are some of the best of my life. i finally am at a stage in my life where i love who i am; my body, personality, tastes, new hobbies, etc. and i don’t apologize anymore for what makes me different.
be encouraged that some of your best times are ahead. you’re wiser, more experienced, disciplined, plus men look more distinguished with age you must remember also! =). take up a new hobby, take your wife out dancing, go somewhere new.
hope you still have a solid birthday (celebrating your exit from your mother’s birth canal =P)

Happy Birthday. I tried to celebrate 40 quietly…didn’t work. What you lose in energy you had as a kid, you gain in perceived wisdom at this point. That, and if you find the parties unbearably boring, you can head out early without trying to craft excuses.
perhaps you and the wife should go on a “date”? like dress up in pretty clothes and go to a nice restaurant? or if you don’t have pretty clothes for a nice place and you don’t have that kind of money to spend at a nice restaurant, surely there is something you both used to do together when you were really just dating that’s fun and is low/no cost.
