  • Teacher Curses at Student

A teacher has been suspended and fined for cursing in front of students.

The teacher used the word “cono” which is referring to the “female sexual organs.”  The teacher was suspended and fined $15,000.   Here is the link:  Link

The coaches at my son’s school curse in front of the kids all the time.

Do you think a teacher should be suspended for cursing?

  • lol Thats a little extreme. My 11th grade science teacher would talk to us about sex all the time (sense everybody knew that our health classes were bull shit). He would swear all of the fucking time. The same went for my senior year English teacher (who was my favorite). I think they defiantly over reacted here.

  • of course not. theyre just human.

  • All she did was say coño?  That’s not that bad of a word in the Spanish language, I had teachers use that word all the time.  Not to mention I used that word all the time when I was a teacher’s aide.

The suspension isn’t a huge deal, but the $15000 is bullshit.

  • That’s a tad bit ridiculous. Teachers in my schools curse all the time. I don’t find it any more offensive than when I hear curses from other people. So long as he wasn’t harassing someone in any way, I don’t think it matters much.

  • Words are just words, in the big picture, they don’t mean all that much. All cursing is anyway is a way to express how passionately you feel about something, and if someone somewhere hadn’t given it the definition of a “bad” word, we’d use it like we use “spoon” or “hello” and nobody would think anything of it. The school board needs to take that giant pole out of their

    asses

    (GASP).

  • That’s more than a bit ridiculous. >-<

  • Hell no. My favorite high school teacher swore ALL the time. He’s an excellent teacher and I hope my sister gets him as a teacher at some point.

  • @ItIsAllGravy - I agree

@Nemokama - I agree with that. There’s too much wrong with the public school systems…that’s why I will not let any children (I plan to have) ever attend. It’s a nightmare.

I though she said something like fuck or something..but this? Really? I’ve never heard the word before.

  • Why not? I know I’m getting old but even when I graduated in 1989 the teachers had enough dignity and self respect than to swear in the classroom or at the students. Somebody has to set the standard after all…

  • hmmm I think there is a line of professional that got crossed, & I would agree with fining etc there are many places that this speech isn’t the right stage for, educators esp. Not to mention many times we sign behavioral contracts & it could be a breach of such.

I think teachers that got ” a way ” with it are using the students to hide or cover their behavior in “coolness” & therefor they stay silent.

  • One culture should not be judged by another, especially when it comes to use of language. If they’re going to judge this teacher on this, they should ask speakers of the Spanish language to decide, not people who only speak English and wouldn’t understand the actual meaning of the word or its use.

Honestly, I don’t approve of teachers cursing in front of students. Cursing is something that doesn’t set a good example and is not polite. Teachers should be role models for students and I don’t believe using impolite, inarticulate language on a regular basis is something that a good role model does.

  • HELL NO, THATS BULLSHIT

  • Of course,I’ve never even heard of the word “cono” either.

  • $15000 is a little steep considering how often teachers normally swear

  • Maybe for an elementary school or middle school teacher. A reprimand is more than sufficient for a high school teacher. The fine is ridiculous.

  • ow that’s a bit harsh, I think.

If I was a teacher I’d slip up all the time. Especially if you were a professor…
I’d be like “GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE.”

  • @Nemokama - I respectfully disagree, words are very powerful, our past, present, present , beauty, love, pain & joy are expressed through them.

  • Everybody slips, even teachers. Hell, I’m a nanny and sometimes things just slip out. The six year old just gives me a whack on the hand and says she won’t use that word because she knows it’s bad.

  • @Made2sing4Jesus - Only because of the meaning we give them. Without a definition, they are only sounds.

  • This is why I’m hesitant to go into teaching.

  • I call bullshit on this story especially since it’s from Fox News.

  • There’s a difference between cursing in general and cursing at a person. When someone curses in general, that is okay. Used tastefully, it can be interesting and amusing. Now, when someone curses AT someone, that’s when conflicts happen.

  • “cono”? I haven’t even heard of that.
    And no.

*full moon comes out* “Aw shit.”
    (children) *gasp*
(a certain werewolf teacher) “I mean poopy!”

If anyone gets that reference, you win. :D

  • If they’re cussing out a kid, then yeah, they should be suspended.  There’s no excuse for that.  But if it’s just in conversation then I don’t really care.

But I was homeschooled.  And my parents don’t cuss.  I literally didn’t know what the F-word was until I was 14.  (And started using Xanga, haha)

  • ….i’ve never even heard of that word?

i grew up around cursing. my parents, family, teachers, everyone cursed. i curse, but not in front of kids since i’m only 19 and am aspiring to be an elementary school teacher lol. but really… it isn’t that big a deal…

  • Hey, the kids gotta learn the whole of the language right?

  • Not really. My teacher did it when he was pissed, and it was either an indication that we really fucked up, or just really hilarious.

  • I think suspension and the fine are a bit outrageous but I don’t think teachers should be cursing in schools. The teacher probably should’ve just been given a warning or something. I think only if the action continued should the school take action against them… and even then…$15,000 for a stupid little word is pretty ludicrous…

  • In 7th grade, I had a sub. who said “I’m really pissed at you (the students)!” and she got fired.  My Freshman yr in High School, I had a coach who said ”Stop being so pissed at a damn locker.” and he didn’t get fired.

  • Not really sure. The fine was a bit much, as was probably the suspension. If the teacher was asked to stop the unacceptable language and didn’t, then perhaps the suspension was valid. What concerns me is, why are we allowing the teachers to curse in front of students to begin with? Is that what we want our children to learn in school??? Aren’t teachers, who are one of several adults in a childs life, suppose to be setting an example to our children?

  • Aww come on. Is it really cursing if it’s in another language.

  • Cono is one of those words that may be more or less offensive depending on which Latin American background you have. For some it’s like the C word, for others it’s a mild oath.

  • i’ve never heard of that word before… and i think it depends on the severity (perhaps ‘hell’ should be allowed but ‘fuck’ shouldn’t)

however, i think it’s poor judgment for a teacher to curse in front of students. they are supposed to be role models, not ‘cool’

  • I wouldn’t want that kind of example set for my kids. If I were a parent at the school where it happened, I’d agree that he should be suspended. The kids need to learn that there are consequences for the things that come out of a person’s mouth. Peace

  • I think it depends on how old the children are this teacher is responsible for. When they are under let’s say fifteen it should not be allowed. But once they’re about sixteen they will hear all people swear, they will unfortunately do it themselves aswell. So in that case it’s just bullshit. Or is that considered a curse aswell?

  • Directors of high school marching bands would get abso-fucking-lutely nothing done if they didn’t curse at the kids.

  • i go to a strict catholic school and for us if we swear we get the same punishment, so yes i think its perfectly reasonable.

but then if the school DOESN’T have rules against swearing , this is ridiculous.

  • That fine is outrageous, but I do think that teachers are supposed to set an example.  I had one professor in college who used to cuss all the time, and I put that in her evaluation every single time I had her as my professor (three times total-once in undergrad and twice in graduate school).  So, I don’t think the suspension was too harsh or a punishment as someone needs to reinforce what type of behavior is expected at a job.  Cussing should not be tolerated around impressionable students of any age.

  • i wanted to be a teacher, but am changing my major now.  i think they overreacted.  i think i would have a hard time not swearing once in awhile.  i slip up occasionally.

  • uh no I don’t think the teacher should of been fined or suspended.  Maybe a “hey shhhhh….” but that’s it.  I’ve heard much worse from my teachers growing up and if they were ever driven to the point of cussing it was way past the point of needing to be done to the student.

  • I’ve never even heard of the word “cono”

that fine is ridiculous – because you know other teachers curse and get away with it. I feel bad for that woman :(

  • I have a feeling she was suspended and fined for talking about reproductive organs, not cuss words. “Teachers” cuss at kids all the time and no one cares.

  • Yes, and so should students.  That is, if we actually care about how people talk and what we are teaching.

  • I hate America and it’s stupid sanitized bullshit.

  • He should. Sometimes, a teacher says bad or insulting words to students. He damages their talent and make them ban teachers.

  • Eh, people react to strongly over swearing. The only reason it’s such a big deal is because we make it out to be such. If we didn’t tell kids these were “bad” words, they would never know. There’s nothing about the word that makes it inherently bad.

  • no, he shouldn’t have been suspened but also he shouldn’t have mentioned the word “cono”.

  • After reading everything being said in the article about how the term has so many different definitions, it seems highly unfair how this was handled.

  • As far as I am concerned, once they hit grade 9 they can speak however they wish. Teens are more aware there are people from all walks of life and need to be exposed to them.

Younger than that i think they would over do it.

    And certainly NO FINE!

  • great. lets suspend and penalize a teacher for trivial reasons and turn our heads the other way when high school coaches call weak players “pussy” and classroom teachers use intimidation as a “correction tool”.

  • Nope. Unless it’s preschool or elementary school.

  • Isn’t $15k about a teacher’s salary these days?  Ok, maybe an exaggeration but not that much.  The fine is ridiculous.  Whatever happened to a ‘warning’ or common sense?  Over-reaction is obviously the norm now.

  • I think the fine was excessive and possibly the suspension .  I refuse to keep a child  I can’t discipline and that seems to be the requirement for being a teacher.  It is generally accepted that most parents leave the education of their children to the schools…and for the most part that includes more than reading, riting and rithmatik.  I am not saying what the teacher did was right but if it was done in anger there was possibly a reason.  I don’t think a coach, the day after winning the big game should be disciplined because he says “You guys played a hell-of-a-game last night!”  Even if it was considered cursing in front of a student…how much more serious is it than the administrators, elected officials and even Washington DC.changing the textbooks, rerwriting history, not compensating the teachers fairly, and every teacher I know personally is putting a percentage of THEIR pay back into  classroom supplies, decorations, extra crayolas to replace those that “walk off” or get stepped on pencils, pens, scissors etc. Perhaps instead of the teacher we should fine the government, administration, and parents that help to create that frustration.  Do you know of anyone that has actually walked up to a teacher and said “Here is $20.00, use it for the benefit of the class”?

Sorry, this question hits a hot button with me.

  • That fine is absurd. it’s prob what she makes per year.

  • That’s a lot of money

  • Fuck that. Cussing should be allowed, not if they are cussing at the student, but if they cuss in the classroom, the students dont care, and the parents need to get the fuck over it.

  • oh boy if you are teacher u shouldn’t curse because you’ll be fined a LOT..erggh

  • @Nemokama - Exactly. Also, if I say “crap” instead of “shit”, I’m still THINKING “shit” in my head… what is the difference?

PS> Fuck is my favorite word, ever. Followed by goddamn.

  • No…I think we should stop trying to sanitize everything.

  • @Made2sing4Jesus - You’d be surprised how much respect a little swear can bring. I’m in AP AB Calculus right now. The previous sentence is not to show how awesome and amazing I am but to show that I’m not an idiot, at least not in the academic sense. We have a normal, regular teacher who is the epitome of a nice middle aged lady. We all like her just fine. A couple of weeks ago, she was arranging papers on her desk while we were doing a practice problem and, aside to herself (probably for forgetting something) but loudly enough for us students to hear, she muttered the word “shit.” We all stared at her in disbelief and she looked up, stared right back at us, and said “Oh please. You’re all turning 18 this year. None of you have ever heard a curse word? Don’t even.” She went right back to doing what it was she was doing.

You cannot believe how much respect we have for her after this. No. It’s not because we’re silly teenagers that love violence, the anti-Christ, and anarchy. That simple word and the non-reaction afterward showed us that our teacher knew what she did was technically improper (something us teenagers do everyday) and understood she was not God’s gift to us students. She trusted us enough to know that we would not go tattle to someone who surely has something better to do and that we would be adult enough ourselves to ignore a mistake. We’re not stupid. We know our teachers are human, have lives outside of school and are normal people. But most teachers act holier than thou and as if their teaching degrees mean we should kiss their asses. (They don’t mean that.) And what is the point of acting like hypocrites when we, us students, know they are human and more than likely swear when we’re not present? Do they think us impressionable enough to instantly repeat everything they say as if it is the word of God? Are they that vain?

My point is, swearing in every sentence is in bad taste and anyone with half a brain can see that. But when you act like a swear word is the end of the world as we know it and us kids, the one’s that are almost 18 and most of which have watched internet porn (look at the statistics! *gasp*), will be morphed into heathens because the oh-so influential adult at the front of the room who talks at us for 40 minutes said a curse word, one has to question the intelligence of the offended public.

Hopefully, this made sense. The English subject is actually not my strong point. >.<

  • WAIT! was he cursing AT the students or just said a curse words in front of the students. i mean calling a student names is far worse than just saying the occasional FUCK or SHIT… my physics teacher in HS said fuck dammit every day while he was teaching.. meh noone seemed to care but rather think that he was a chill guy.

  • I believe the teacher’s language was inappropriate.  Had she been previously warned? Can the teacher appeal?  Is it merely a suspension?  Will she have to put up the money before she is permitted to teach again in that school district?

The School Board may have a real challenge facing them.  They may have  allowed a “can of worms” to be opened up here.  Teachers are supposed to be role model.  I would not want children of mine to be learning from a teacher who is supposed to be a appropriate conduct, that that sort of language is all right to be used as an expletive.

  • I don’t think coarse language is an issue, but rather the context in which any language is used. Personally, swear words don’t offend me by themselves, and I think its silly that anyone does find them offensive in that way, and that people can go to jail for it in various places around the world. Its like crying over spilt milk, honestly. Get over it. The word ‘poop’ is probably the most offensive word to me due to the whole onomatopoeic thing its got going, yet here I am living in a world where I’m forced to hear it every so often. Shit happens! (mind the pun).

  • I need more extremities to count the number of times my Bio teacher had dropped the F-bomb. Free speech is free speech. Children hear worse from their peers than from their teachers. This is such a stupid overreaction.

  • i dont agree that it is ok for teachers to cuss, i dont find that professional. however, i do find what happened to this teacher is a bit extream. a slip cuss word is fine to me, but to regularly speak it not so much.

  • interesting how i only had to look at the title & the first line & i knew who would write this kind of topic.

  • hell no. that’s stupid as hell

  • I love the way in the article they talk about how it’s the way the word is used that matters.  Here in America, we use the word shit in a large variety of ways, not all of them derogatory or vulgar.  That doesn’t make it any less a curse.  He is in the wrong for saying it.  However, a $15K fine for saying it is way out of line, too.

  • The question lies in the prepositional phrase. Cussing at? Cussing in front of?

  • Okay, because its not like students never hear curse words anywhere else…

  • Yes, bad language encourages bad behavior and hostility. And it’s not very professional.
