  • Banning Facebook/Xanga At Work

I was talking to an IT guy today and he was talking about some of the services he provides.  He mentioned how he goes into companies and helps them set up their networks and ban their employees from using Facebook at work.

I guess I was supposed to be impressed with this.  It is funny that all of these IT people who spend time on the Internet have so much passion in stopping everyone else.

If you had the power, would you ban employees from using Facebook at work?

  • Anal Exam Without Consent

A study has shown that medical students give anal exams, rectal exams and breast exams to patients while they are unconscious during surgery.  (I know I have covered this basic topic before).

Basically if a person is having a surgery, the doctors will bring in medical students and let them practice unrelated exams to give them practice.  This is all done without the consent of the patient.  Here is the link:  Link

Does it bother you that medical students are giving you a rectal exam when you are having surgery on your arm?

  • Shut Up and Get Back in the Kitchen

Only 51% of women under 30 can cook a roast.  That number is compared to 82% of baby boomer women who can cook a roast.

This is causing some to wonder if women are losing basic skills like “cooking, ironing and sewing.”  Here is the link:  Link

Ladies, can you cook a roast?

  • Killing the Internet

One topic that was sort of under the radar but was discussed in Washington DC was whether the President should have the ability to kill the Internet.  Here is the link:  Link

The thinking was that the a cyber attack may come against more than the government.  A cyber attack may be aimed at utility companies and communication companies.  And these attacks would hurt the U.S.

So the thinking was the President needed the ability to kill the Internet for a time to stop a cyber attack.

In the last few days this issue has come up again with the protest in Egypt.  The President of Egypt cut off the Internet in the country in order go push back against the civil unrest in the country.

Should the President be given the ability to kill the Internet?

  • Password Strategy

A friend at work was complaining recently that he had so many passwords for all his different accounts that it was becoming difficult to keep the passwords straight and remember them.

I mentioned that I have a password strategy that I have used for years.

    1.  I have a password that I can give out to anyone so anyone can check into the account.

    2.  I have a password that is for my friends so I give this as a password whenever I might need to share it with a friend or coworker.

    3.  I have a password that is for close friends so I am safe it I need to share it with close friends or family.

    4.  I have a password that I use for any account shared with my wife.

    5.  I have a password that is the mother of all passwords and only I know it.  It is a complicated password mixed with numbers and letters.

Do you have a password strategy?

  • Social Networks

I am sure if I asked what is your favorite social network, many would answer the obvious answer of “xanga” or “facebook.”

But I am sort of curious about some of the other social networks.  I have noticed a bunch of people are going over to tumblr.

Besides xanga and facebook, what is your favorite social network?

  • Space Shuttle Challenger

I remember when the space shuttle blew up.  It was sort of the “I remember where I was when” moment.

I was in Jr. High.  They carted TVs into the classes so we could watch the news coverage.  It blew up 25 years ago.  I remember when President Reagan got shot.

There is 9/11 which is probably this generations moment.  I know my dad said that his moment was when JFK was shot.

What was your generational moment to remember?

  • Do You Spend Too Much Time On the Internet?

I work full time on the Internet.  It is all I do at work.  So it feels to me that my time on the Internet is justified.  I get paid to be on the Internet.  If I shut off my computer during the day, I must be screwing around at work.

But you people on the other hand. . .

Do you think you spend too much time on the Internet?

  • Do You Want to Be A Professional Writer?

In my last post, I said that I thought most people on xanga were really not that entertaining.  I also said that is why so many of them fail when they leave xanga to create other blogs on other platforms.  They can build their xanga site by commenting other people.  (By the way, if you disagree with this go start a site on another blogging platform and come back and show us the results after a few months.  I promise not to laugh at you).

I am sort of curious about how many of you would like to be a writer full time.

Has it ever been your dream to be a professional writer?

  • Is Your Blog Entertaining?

Does your blog have any entertainment value?

Now most of the blogs I see on xanga have very little entertainment value.  Instead I see blogs on xanga that essentially thrive off social value.

What I mean is that the person comments other people and people comment the same person back.  So the main reason the person is read is because the person has commented other people.  So that means the person’s blog has social value.  But there is no entertainment value.  In other words, if the person stopped commenting other people the person would not be read.

This is why you see so many people who leave xanga fall on their face in other blogging platforms.  They overestimate their own entertainment value because the social value of their blog blinded them to their lack of entertaining content.
