Anal Exam Without Consent
A study has shown that medical students give anal exams, rectal exams and breast exams to patients while they are unconscious during surgery. (I know I have covered this basic topic before).
Basically if a person is having a surgery, the doctors will bring in medical students and let them practice unrelated exams to give them practice. This is all done without the consent of the patient. Here is the link: Link
Does it bother you that medical students are giving you a rectal exam when you are having surgery on your arm?

YES. I want to be aware when they’re touching my special places!
Heck yeah, it would bother me! If they’re going to probe me all over, I want it in my medical record so my regular doctor will stop badgering me to have it done.
Yes, I’d want to be conscious for that
It’s a serious violation of my assets!
I was going to say, “Isn’t that prison rape?” but it’s not quite the same thing.
Oh, and I’d rather not be molested in my sleep.
honestly i think if i found out i would sue. total violation.
Yeah, they were doing gynecologic exams during surgery too, and some of the doctors interviewed just couldn’t understand for the life of them why anybody would see that practice as morally questionable…
They should take me out to dinner first
You’re not supposed to do any procedure without consent from the patient. I think this has been going on for a while & it’s terrible. I’m sure people wont volunteer to assist in helping students learn but to do so without asking is a violation.
Not without paying me and a goodbye kiss.
lol.
Wait, a study? How the heck did a study like this even get proposed?
@Shinbi_Belldandy - You’re not supposed to do any procedure without consent from the patient.
I don’t think a rectal exam qualifies as a procedure. It’s only a bit of looking around.
That would bother me.
Maybe that’s why some people can’t poop afterwards :/
And I don’t think I would appreciate having someone I don’t know stick their fingers up my a-hole whilst I am asleep. Not cool.
xo’
I would sue their asses if I could.
Yeah. The doctor asked me if I would mind students watching my birth. I said no. Hahah.
andd yeah. Medical students aren’t getting anywhere near me again. ever.
There is a new technique called audioscopy. You shout up the orifice and judge the patient’s health from the quality of the echo.
@Celestial_Teapot - well.. it’s an exam. Just like doctor stuffing their fingers up my vagina is called a “pelvic exam”. Sooo. haha. yeah.
when i had appendicits they had (oddly, all female) students lined up around the block to give me a rectal. it was like being gang probed. of course they claimed it was a diagnostic procedure. and of course my appendix finally ruptured before they took me to surgery.
Well, it is a medical ethics issue that needs to be addresses. Bring a lock and key to prevent them from probing.
If the med students need to practice giving anal exams, they can just join the TSA workforce…
NO….that is why God made cadavers.
YES.
@Rob_of_the_Sky - ROFL. Good one.
I think the medical students should be volunteering to practice on EACH OTHER and not on unsuspecting patients. It’s their degree….not up to the rest of us to be their guinea pigs. Ick.
@Shinbi_Belldandy - What a shame. I agree with you though.
@musicmom60 - I think the medical students should be volunteering to practice on EACH OTHER and not on unsuspecting patients.
Well, this way, they don’t have to take turns; and their medical education would be twice as efficient.
It’s their degree….not up to the rest of us to be their guinea pigs.
I’d rather that med students and residents get the proper training in the field than cross my fingers and hope that book smarts alone can carry them through their profession.
@ShimmerBodyCream - LOL! What, no booze first?
No, if I ever found out, I would sue. Even if I didn’t win, I’d like for everyone to know.
So, what if during one of these exams, they actually found something serious enough to have to be brought to your attention? Would they tell you or not? That could be awkward for them!
I wouldn’t mind, because I wouldn’t have to be awake for an awkward and probably unfomfortable procedure, but I would definitely want to know beforehand that its going to be done.
Yes that makes me extremely uncomfortable and that is a serious infringement on my rights.
yes. that’s fucked up.
They’d better be using lube
definitely!! I mean, if they asked before hand it would be no problem. They probably do it without asking because most people would say NO!
I’m surprised they actually allow something like this. I get that it’s practice for medical students but you would think they would run it by the patient first for their consent? This would be considered sexual harassment.
YES IT BOTHERS ME THIS MUCH.
Then again, I’ll be unconscious when this happens, so I won’t know either.
remind me to NEVER have a surgical procedure that requires anesthesia.
Democrats give anal exams to all of their political enemies too. Just ask Sarah Palin.
I’ve heard of this before and it didn’t surprise me at all. When I was very sick with my PTSD and would lapse into unconscious states and lapse back in quite frequently I spent a lot of times in ERs, where they found inappropriate reasons to sedate me, hold me down, and allow practicing students to attempt to do medical procedures. Injections, techniques to restraints, tube feedings, things I probably don’t even remember and yes even catheters. I could hear people talking them through it as they went. I don’t doubt that they’ve done this to elderly, intellectually handicapped, and other mental health cases who will never get the chance to speak about it. Fortunately having PTSD I have the means to go from Non functioning to functioning and vice versa. Other disorders once down will never get up. So if it ever happened to them, they will never get to speak of it. This didn’t happen in the 60s. I’m only 23.
I have been in the medical field for many years. There is no way this sort of thing would fly here in the states without serious consequences. With HIPAA in place patients have to sign to authorize every single procedure which includes exams, tests, surgery, anesthesia, etc. Yes…even in a teaching hospital. I would be outraged if this happened to me. Hell, I am outraged for those poor, unsuspecting patients!
That is so wrong.
Sounds like an opportunity for ass-play.
They shouldn’t be able to do that unless there is signed consent before going unconscious. That seems like a pretty big violation of one’s charter of rights and freedoms…
@Celestial_Teapot - You still need consent. If you touch a patient without expressed consent it’s considered battery.
As long as they buy me dinner afterward. With wine.
how else would they learn? being unconscious gives consent I suppose…
When I was in college, I was out with some buddies and my drunk driving buddy flipped the truck we were in with me in the back. I woke up in the hospital, hung over with a splitting headache and a large scrape on my shoulder. If my night wasn’t going poorly enough, I was greeted by an eager enthusiastic medical student who proceeded to check for internal bleeding (He shoved his finger up my ass) while his mentor looked on. The same go gettum student lobbied and was awarded the right to put the stiches in my head. Needless to say it was one of the worst nights of my life.
Yeah, that seems majorly ethically wrong!! We have to get consent as nursing students to do any procedure or exam on a patient!
Surprise butt ‘xamination!
Yeah, they should wait ’til I’m awake so I can enjoy it!
@bluepillorredpill - lol….THAT WAS GREAT!!!
they shouldn’t do it without consent… i would be a little pissed about that if i found out. why not just ask??? it’s a violation of trust.
Of course, especially if they make a mistake that they won’t take responsibility for.
Speaking from experience, Dan?
I wonder how many outraged idiots here support infant circumcision.
arm surgery can be a real pain in the ass
I just wish they’d ask. If I was already under sedation, I’d give consent. They have to learn on real people eventually anyway. And it’s not like I’m going to remember it…
@Shinbi_Belldandy - I agree. It has always been that way.
I couldn’t stop thinking about this today that my brother had surgery, as I was sitting in the waiting room for any news about him I was like … Oh you better not! …
@musicmom60 - i am with you there.
If I knew beforehand what they wanted to do I’d probably consent to it. I’d be unconscious so it wouldn’t really bother me, they have to learn by practicing on people and I’m pretty easygoing since in nursing I have had to learn my clinical skills on a few very trusting guinea pigs. But it’s unethical to assume consent on an unconscious person.
yes, thats disrespect of a persons privacy, and we arent lab aninals to just be tested on, especially when a surgery is taking place…that’s a no brainer
You know, if they asked me, I’d let them do it. No problem. I’m already going to be out, go ahead and check anything you want (I’d rather have a rectal exam passed out than awake!). Buuuuut, doing it without my consent would anger me. That’s invasion of privacy and a whole lot of wrong. I understand most people will say no, but they might be surprised how many would consent. I’d consent -shrug-
@xKateElizabethx - yeah, everything you said.
I’d press criminal charges.
If that’s true that is insane. I had a chinese doctor that wasn’t even my doctor randomly come in and “check” me for what i can’t remember, but his idea of checking included sticking his finger up my ass. Never saw him again and was confused and then mad.
@brettcollums - heehee
I think they should not only ask for their consent, but make sure they know what it is… my sister had one after she was in a car accident, fully conscious, had no idea what it was. They asked her if she had any pain in her spine, she said yes (only cause the guy was pressing her spine hard and she couldn’t tell if it was her pain or pain from him,) and they then proceeded to check her rectal. She said it was extremely painful. Her boyfriend, fortunately, knew what it was, and would not allow them to do so.
YES!
Yes, the thought does bother me. And in hindsight, it seems like a good thing that I kept my shorts on when I had shoulder surgery a few years ago. (As I told one of the nurses, “You’re not going anywhere near there anyway, so I’m keeping them on!”)
Free anal exam? Who the heck complains about something like that!? I LOVE ANAL EXAMS!
Do it while I’m out, why not.
hell yeah! if i’m dead and my body is used for medical studies and exams then no problem, but as long as i’m still breathing they would need to at least ask me for a courtesy reason if not for anything else.
Yeah, that bothers me. It would be different if they asked first. I mean… what about people who have been sexually assaulted? I don’t think it’s right to just go around probing without asking first.
I would flip the fuck out, and I just got my wisdom teeth out and was knocked out and now I’m paranoid……..
this should not be allowed!!!!!!!
