Are You Book Smart?
Recently I was talking to someone and she mentioned that she was not “book smart.” In other words, she had read little in her life and did not think she could pick up a book and learn from it.
She mentioned she was “people smart.” She could read people well and figure out how to respond to them appropriately.
I want to focus on your ability to pick up a book and learn from a book without the help of another person.
Are you book smart?

Yes. I rarely forget things I read, even years later.
Yup.
I’d say so.
I love books. I can read several books at a time and understand the plot of each.
Yes, I believe so. :3
I used to be, until I got Netflix.
yup. i might forget where i was 10 minutes ago, but I can almost teach a class after taking it once. that kind of information never leaves my head
@chaospet - LOL best. answer. ever.
If there are a lot of pictures…
Yes if it’s well-written or interesting and not long-winded.
Yes. I eat books alive.
For the most part I am. Poetic stuff is a challenge, but I don’t need help to learn from books.
@chaospet - Good answer.
I think I’m both kinds of smart.
@boilingicicle - Same.
Yeah, I believe I am. I try to be.
Book smart.
Not people smart.
reading is a good habit espically if’n they are the right type of books….and I am an avid book reader….smile
I’m *very* book smart, and I often find my street smarts are lacking. So it’s good and bad.
Yes
I’m more book smart than street smart, I’ll say that at least.
@jenessa1889 - :)
Book smart, not that much. I knew that when I barely passed Calculus the second the time around. I do tend to think I’m more street smart and understand things not taught in schools.
I read a book once, in middle school, called Hatchet
Depends on the subject matter of the book. Quantum Physics not so much so…philosophy, I can hold my own.
Oh, most definitely. Of course, it depends on the material. For example, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t walk away with much but frustration if I tried to read a Calculus book or something.
I once read that most people overestimate their intellect. I know that includes me. Book smart? I feel like I’m Don freaking Quixote. ‘Course he was as nutty as a jar of Planters. People smart? Need tutoring.
according to popular definitions on urban dictionary
I am both street smart and book smart
Yessum. Thgat’s a damned thick 5 1/2 by 8 version of Sun Tsu’s “The Art of War” that the bimbo is reading, to say there’s only about 100 pages of text in it. Must be massive amounts of commentary.
Definitely. I’m a total nerd: I’d rather spend time with a book than with most people, and I have an insane amount of obscure or relatively useless knowledge and trivia in my head gained from reading books. I read non-fiction stuff for fun, sometimes.
A little from Column A and a little from Column B.
Yes.
I have read thousands of books, but I learn better by doing than reading.
The people in my school classify everyone as either “book smart” or “naturally smart.” I’m the salutatorian of my class, but it’s sad that I’m only book smart. I wish I was naturally smart like our valedictorian. I, unfortunately, cannot learn from trial and error. I do not have an intuition of how to start, execute, or solve problems on my own. I cannot manipulate or derive equations into my own methods. I HAVE to read in order to learn.
Definitely. I was just studying Intermediate French before I took a xanga break.
Yes.
Yes. Unfortunately, that seems to be the only sort of smart I am. I’m definitely not people smart or street smart.
Unless it’s some books that I really got interested in the story otherwise I never really could finish reading it. I’m more of a people smart person too.
I know what books are
I’m just plain not smrt.
I don’t believe that Paris Hilton needs glasses.
Yep, I am. I read all the time about all types of stuff and remember it.
Yes i am. And a little people smart too. I think you have to have both to be a nurse.
I guess I am book smart.
yes!
I’d say so. But book smarts can only take a person so far.
I don’t read and I find that people who learn from books are actually pretty stupid. I learned everything I know from the School of Hard Knox – Life 101 baby!
My dad kept all that for himself. He can read a book of how to do something and teach himself.I have to be shown, sometimes I can figure something out by seeing how it works ad messing with it a while. But just reading something I know nothing about and understanding it enough to do it,RARELY does that happen.I can use my commom sense, but book smarts,I have very little
I think your definition of book smart is wrong.
No, but if I put on a pair of glasses I look smart.
Yes, but I prefer articles because they are more specific.
I guess I’m a bit of both. Books have taught me stuff I could never have learned from people and vice versa.
i am book smart. it might just be my best asset.
yes….I’d say I was book smart in the area of history or literature…..math and science are a little more difficult. But, I am also pretty good at reading people.
Sure.
I am book smart. I read everyday and every night
I definitely am NOT book smart. School is not my thing. But I still know how to spell correctly, and can use correct grammar. I have more common sense than smarts. Both are forms of intelligence, though. A person who is book smart may not have a lot of common sense – for example.
i’m so smrt!!
Apparently.
Yes.
Well… there’s book smart and then there’s well read. I’m not very people smart. I like to think I’m street smart… and I can be book smart but iit has to be books of a specific topic like science or math. I’m not very history book smart.
PS, I think it’s possible to be book smart if you watch documentaries! You don’t need a book for that
Book smart and people smart. =D I’m lucky I guess.
well I do prefer to learn using non-book methods, but yeah, I am book smart. I’m also people and common sense smart though
No
i don’t know..
I would say i’m more book smart than people smart..
Smart book selection is the key.
I don’t believe in “people smart.” But to answer the question – I don’t understand how you can pick up a book, read it and not learn something from it. Yes I am in the group of the book smart people. I didn’t get this clever by watching “Days of our Lives. “
I think books have become obsolete. Instead, we look up something on the Net. I think your question should be rephrased as follows: “Are you Net smart?” In that case, I think I am Net smart.
Ya.
Intelligence in a certain area pertains to how much experience you have in that certain area. If you happen to read books a lot on a certain subject matter, you’ll tend to be more informed in that area (book smart). If you happen to spend time understanding people more, you’ll tend to be experienced in reading people (people smart). Some people pick things up quicker in certain areas than others.
Very much so. I read a lot.
Yes.
@ShamrockLover - I think so too.
What smart???
Very book smart. Both from formal education, where there is a professor drilling it all in and testing my knowledge, and continued reading of everything I get my hands on — newspapers, quality fiction and non-fiction.
I’m ebook smart. I read at least two books a month. But i never really considered myself as bookish. Only someone who likes to be at peace once in a while.
everyone is an open book
someone must have told her that at one time and she’s fullfilled it
I would pick up a book if I were her but she’s already got it in her head what she is and I guess she’s proud of it.
I’m a reader.
Yep. I also think I’m people smart. I don’t think one shuts out the other.
it’s surprising how much donning a pair of glasses all of a sudden changes the feel of a person. all she needs now is a cardigan. as for your question, i like to read… but I like people better.
If that is the definition, then, yes. I usually think of book smart as more like knowing a lot of information, but not always being able to apply it to the real world.
I like reading books but I wouldn’t say I’m book smart at all.
Absolutely not. It’s taken me years to learn what people can in a month. Not even kidding.
And I’ve never read a book beyond 90 pages in my life.
Yep. I’ve been in school since I was 4, and I’m 24 now, so I never really had a choice. It was either get book smart or cheat. Where’s the fun in that?
PAW DIDNT GO IN FER ALL THAT-AIR FANCY BOOK LEARNIN’, Y’SEE
I am book smart and people smart. I find book smart less painful.
I’d consider myself book smart.
I learnt there’s green eggs n ham and if you try them you might like them, so yes. I’m book smart.
Very. I’m also good at reading people and responding, though. Where I fall down is sciences.
Yes.
Reading regular books has definitely helped me grasp things that are not exactly literary, because I think reading (in general) teaches you to synthesize information. I can better understand math books now, for example, than I did before I got my degree in English (LOTS of reading). Before I needed a teacher, holding my hand and showing me the way. I find now, though, that I am a lot better at figuring things out on my own as long as I have instructions/a book.
can’t you be both? I like books and people. Given that people write books.
I am definitely book smart. Success in school has always come easily to me in most subjects. The only glaring exception is foreign language. Unfortunately, book smarts are the only kind of smarts I have.
Not as book smart as I would like to be. I’m not as people smart as I would like to be either. I guess you convinced me that I’m one big fat dummykins.
I would like to think I am…I LOVE books…I can read multiple books at the same time and still be engrossed in each one (I think that is a bit of adult ADD coming out there though, that i need constant stimulation lol)…my kids are the same way…i read to them since they were in womb and they have voracious appetites for books and knowledge …funny thing is, my hubby does not read, none of his kids were read to as children and none fo the 3 will read a book to save their lives now….
Pardon my ill humor, I’m at a library where this guy keeps clearing his throat and he’s dead in front of me. I have the whole comic series for Dragon Ball Z, starting from when Radditz arrived to Earth, ending in Buu’s defeat by a giant spirit bomb. My favorite character was Bulma dressed up with tight skirts, I’d fantasize how she’d look like in real life, her big nicely shaped juggs, behind, and pretty face. It’s interesting how anime chiks wooda looked so much hotter than the pretty dolls in the real world. Eh… I having a different method of reading, I look for clue words, cuz usually those clue words will keep popping up, especially in philosophical essays, which recently I am reading Philosophy looks at Chess, a range of essays… a lot of deals on artificial intelligence since Deep Blue defeated Kasparov, but my guess is there will never be an artificial creation capable of posting Theological discussions at a Cafe.
I’m smart.
I’m sorry, I don’t differentiate between “book” and “street” smart. It all comes out to one result: are you an idiot all of the time, or just some of the time?
I feel as if I’m book smart and people smart. But then again, I’m pretty sure a lot of people feel the same way.
Reading people is becoming more important in this technological age. I deal with clients daily and I learn more from human interaction than I ever could opening a book. I do understand some material can only be learned through book, however. And by human interaction, i mean actual communication, not the idiotic jargon that people IM.

Yes, I can read a book and learn from it.

@ShamrockLover - I agree.
According to your definition, I am. I learn well that way.
i think by book smart it means to have analytical intelligence, while people smart is emotional intelligence. the latter is much more important and helpful imo. i would much rather to be more “people smart” than “book smart”.
i read books that are about reading people. what does that make me? oOoOo~
Hermes are the designer accessory having this long waiting list of world famous celebrities and high profile people who bear testament to this product. Although the whole concept of the Birkin is taken after the actress, it is interesting to note that she has been charged for the brand-new line of bags.
I always taught myself in high school and college from textbooks, it was faster than attempting to understand the teacher’s personal method. Of course that didn’t help me in college when my professors said the only useful information in our textbook was the problem sets.
I am a priest. To get through seminary with honors, you need to be book smart. I graduated from college summa cum laude with a BS in Management Science, and from seminary with honors. So, yes, I am very book smart. However, I was a Purchasing Agent in secular life, and became a priest later in life, and you have to have people smarts to succeed in either capacity. So yes, I am people smart as well.
Paying attention seems to be the key to both.
book smart>people smart
totally
Yes.
If the book was written by someone who is “book smart”.
Stupid books by stupid people have stupid results.
i’m evil smart.
i think most college kids have to be to some degree! Or else we’d all fail organic chemistry =
What’s a book?
I’m much more book smart than people smart.
I think so.
I’m book smart, but I’m a little awkward around people. =
@redmakesmeblue - That is the secret to a successful scientist.
Yes, but my attention span is retarded. I blame donuts.
