Am I Dickish?
I received a private message from a lady who told me my behavior was “dickish.”
This caused me to stop and take a moment of self-reflection. I then figured the woman was just pmsing and that I am really a warm and caring person.
Do you think I come across as dickish?

You’re a bit silly and immature sometimes, but you’re overall a nice person. I’m a bit annoyed by your denial of scientific and factual reality (let’s not get into that again, though), but that’s your own choice that doesn’t affect me, so whatever.

Eh… you can come across that way sometimes, but I think the difference in perception between n00bs and people who have been here a long time is the factor here; we can tell when you’re just screwing around and the n00bs cannot.

I have a very rough time taking anything to heart that people type in cyberspace. In fact, I think the whole idea of the internet is to shove your ideas in everyone’s face. We make a choice to listen or ignore and I don’t think you’re a dick for typing anything to anyone. It seems these days you can curse someone to their face and they will shrug it off, but send a frown face over the internet and you’ve ruined Christmas.
Really though, why do we treat the internet like the infinite codex? I guess my ideals are dying out but I always felt a person was a result of their character not their web page.
If people think you’re an asshat for what you type, the blogs you write and the responses to them, then that’s their problem. I think we all can use a good dose of your dickishness. We should be thanking you for toughening us for the real world as your words cut so deeply and prepare us for the life outside your darkened study background.

Not at all. I think it’s generally a misreading and adding of inflection and subtext where there may be none. Having seen you live has given me a slight difference in perspective then if I’d only ever read your blogs.

You are, as far as I can tell, always pleasant, cordial and caring when dealing with someone directly, however I’ve seen many blogs where you made snarky, judgmental comments about “types” of people who were not present. It would seem to hint that your politeness is not entirely genuine. (hey, you specifically asked on a public forum)

@TheGreatBout - I’m not so sure it’s nearly as low as 15%, but many women definitely don’t have PMS. My period does nothing but give me cramps, and I just pop Midoll and get over it. I never feel especially snarky or nasty.

everyone has their moments though. i rarely get into arguments with people on here, but a lot of times i don’t think before i say something and look like an asshole.
sometimes you like to say stuff that you know will cause a debate, which a lot of people think automatically makes you this full blown dick when it only makes you a small one.

Yeah, you kind of are, but you have your audience. Everyone does. Some people love to push buttons and then back off, claiming they didn’t mean to offend anyone, when they really love getting people riled up. I tend to call it “polite trolling”. Bring up a touchy subject then hide behind “I just wanted to know people’s opinion” when really it’s “I just want to start a tiny fire then blame it on the commenters when it blows up”.

Hard for any of us to say. All we know about you is what you are online. In real life, you could be really caring, or really uncaring.
That being said, you say a lot of things without really thinking them through on here (or at least I assume so). It’s not about offending people, which you don’t seem to care about (which, you shouldn’t necessarily care about), but about really hurting people when you don’t think things through.
Now, if you *do* think those things through and just don’t care…. Yes, you act “dickish”.
As for your whole personality… I’m not sure any but your closest friends are really qualified to say.
