  • The Rise and Fall of Myspace

I was just reading an article titled “The Rise and Inglorious Fall of Myspace.”  The author of the article was mentioning that Myspace was on top of the Internet World a few years ago.

But now the company that owns Myspace and bought it for $580 million in 2005, is trying to sell it for $100 million now.  In fact, the owning company is going to shut the site down if they can’t find a buyer because they are losing too much money.  Here is the link:  Link

After all the talk about xanga dying because everyone left for Myspace, it would be interesting if Xanga outlasted Myspace.

I have 4000-5000 friends on myspace but I can’t even get a response over there anymore.  I remember back in 2006, I wrote in a bulletin on Myspace that it was dying and I received over 100 responses to that bulletin.

    Do you use Myspace anymore?

  • What’s a MySpace?

  • I sometimes use it when I’m bored.

  • I haven’t used MySpace in years.

  • I shut down my account about 5 years ago.

  • I didn’t even have one when it was popular, I was still on Xanga.

  • I shut down my Myspace years ago.  I don’t regret that decision.

  • No I never used it very long, not my thing. I didn’t know it was still around.

  • Nope. I got a myspace because my friend basically, like, made me sign up for it. “Everyone’s on myspace, you have to join!” She made my username, my password, my profile, and requested me to be friends with everyone she was friends with that I knew. I think I went on daily for about six months, but I didn’t actually do much there, and I didn’t go on too many other people’s profiles because they were loud and obnoxious and flashing and ow my eyes hurt. I got a friend request about a month ago, but it was from one of those musical “artists” that friends everyone they can find. Someone told me that record labels were supporting myspace and that’s the only reason it still exists. I haven’t actually logged on in at least a year.

  • I was never that into Myspace.  Only tried it because of all my friends who begged me to get on there.

  • so many people will lose their farms if Myspace closes but then the closure would see crime drop because so many mafias would be disbanded.

  • I deleted my Myspace a few years ago :X

  • My space only seemed good for those who wanted to troll for 13 year old girls. I hope it does die.

  • Haha…freshman year of HS memories. I haven’t been on Myspace in one or maybe two years. Xanga’s been around longer than Myspace has anyway, right? I think it’s funny that it’s outlasting it, though. I always wonder if there’s still stragglers at Myspace who are like us Xanga stragglers.

  • I haven’t used MySpace in 3 years.

  • If I remembered how to log on to my Myspace, I would shut t down.

  • I never used it in the first place.

  • I haven’t really used myspace in about 3 years. I used to read through old messages and stuff like that, then I finally shut it down about a year ago.

  • I have a MySpace account, but I’ve never really used it much. I hope that a bunch of those people who left Xanga to blog there will come back.

  • Have not used it, much less had an account there. I hope Xanga doesn’t die!  It’s the only place I’ve ever known. I don’t even have FB. I wonder how many people can say that honestly…..

  • my space…i’m surprised they’re still up…

  • haven’t used it in FOREVER !!!! I thought it was already gone … wow -__ –

  • @armnatmom - not very many :) lol but facebook is starting to slowly go just like myspace

  • There are a few messages on my MySpace account sent by my “ex”‘s psychotic ex-gf. I guess I better find my password and save those messages elsewhere before it shuts down. Those messages used to give me the best laughs.

  • Back in my day, high schoolers weren’t ALLOWED facebook. We had to settle for myspace.

    And now I feel old…

  • I haven’t used myspace in months. It’s because it messes up every time I use it.

  • i checked out my myspace just the other day looking for some old pictures. it was kind of funny haha

  • I think MySpace is before my time, however old that makes y’all feel. =D

  • Never got a MySpace account. I’ve gotten on Facebook and Twitter, but never got into MySpace.

  • thank you for reminding me that I need to go over there and check on a few things….kids…lol…and see what is happening over there…some of the kids still use Myspace instead of FB…smile

  • I haven’t had a myspace in years it’s all about twitter!

  • I never liked myspace, even when I had one. Haven’t been on it in years!

  • The age of decay. An ice age would be a blessing; mankind extinct to allow nature to reign supreme. I DON’t want to FREEZE to death! Somebody hug me, I’m goint to die a virgin! My nickname should be the virgin maryo

  • I don’t use myspace anymore and honestly facebook bores the crap out of me, the next big thing is tumblr but honestly as much as I love tumblr it pisses me off sometimes because of how much they copy 4chan. You should do research on 4chan and write a blog on it and see how many people know of it’s existance and it’s rise and fall and all that.

Somehow no matter what site I go on I always end up back on xanga eventually. I started on xanga and I will end on xanga.

  • @alexx87 - Twitter sucks. Sorry. It’s just facebook status updates that are way shorter and without any of the other stuff facebook has to offer. And I don’t think it’s going to last as long as tumblr.

  • @omgroxie - good point, we shall see what happens.

  • Myspace was killed by Facebook and YouTube. I personally don’t believe Facebook is going to last much longer.

  • social network sites are getting boring in general. I don’t use myspace or facebook much because I go online to disconnect from the annoying people in real life, not for them to get in my business online, too. I don’t even really network on xanga. I just surf around for amusement youtube will never die. youtube is my fave.

  • No I dont. I closed my account just the other day after having not been on it in almost a year. It took me a few tries to remember my username and password. MySpace is all but dead.

  • man, I haven’t signed on in ages. I did a couple of times but it annoyed me how they were trying to overdo anything so I got off really quickly.

  • the site SUCKS now…but back in my high school days it was pretty much the shit lol.

i hope they don’t shut down though…i have some amazing memories on that site

  • i haven’t touched mine in years.. i rem i met a guy from myspace lol.. had dinner, no chemistry.. that was about it haha… too much copy and paste, glittery gif spams there. can’t stand it.

  • no, i never really used it that much anyways.

  • I never really got into myspace

  • Nope. People there are incredibly immature.

  • @Ariel273 - Something else will come along.  Something usually does.  Remember Friendster? :D

  • I never had one.

  • I was never on MySpace. It would be great for Xanga to outlast them though because I remember all of the people on here going nuts and switching over because it was supposedly SO much better.

  • I miss GreatestJournal.

  • I still have my old account, but I haven’t used it in years, especially not since they revamped the site and turned it into a ghetto Facebook.

But I actually kind of miss the way social networking was when MySpace was “cool.” There wasn’t all the announcing of minutiae that there is on Facebook and Twitter, and people were more focused on just decorating their profiles with music playlists and other stupid shit. I also think it was easier to blog there than on Facebook. Even though MySpace wasn’t a blog site, you could still find an audience there who would read your back catalog, whereas on Facebook people have short attention spans and the blogs you post just sort of disappear into your wall once they stop being current (which happens immediately).

I think of MySpace as sort of a stepping stone between the “blog” era (where blogging was this new, hip way to communicate and even celebrities were signing up for Xanga sites and updating them) and the “tweet” era (where everyone broadcasts a steady stream of crap to everyone else, and entire news articles can be written every time a celebrity posts a couple words). But I think we may have lost something in that transition. Or maybe I just miss the days when people actually wrote in detail and fancied themselves as professional writers. But that’s what Xanga is for, I guess.

  • I know I’m in the minority here, but I never had a MySpace.  I joined Xanga about the time it began to decline and joined FB at the time when it was starting to decline some to Twitter.  I think if I join MySpace, it would probably finish them off for good.  In fact, considering my history, I could possibly see how much various sites would be willing to pay just to keep me from joining them.  Perhaps I should make my money the old-fashioned way… extorting it. (haha)

  • nope. but i forgot my password so i can’t even login to delete my page. damn.

  • MySpace has turned into the Ghetto of the Internet… no one picks up the trash, the sites look like brothels in Nevada. Cheesy. Hard to communicate. FB, Twitter, Blogger…. !!!! http://www.RogerBlazic.com

  • BTW – great insights as always. Keep it up.

  • Myspace is too damn slow and people trying to get the most ” Friends.”

  • i check it once and awhile. but not really.
i have a shit ton of friends who are never on anyway.
and it takes forever to load now.

  • I sometimes use Myspace Music. I think turning into a music site would be their best hope.

  • it’s dead… floating around in the cyberspace graveyard :P

  • Xanga came last for me. I had MySpace first, then my friends talked me into Facebook. Which really didn’t take much because I wanted to keep in touch with them but they all refused to use MySpace anymore. Coming to Xanga was completely different though. None of my real life friends are here, and I like it that way.

  • I actually logged in there the other day to save pictures to put on my FB account.  I could care less if MySpace was shut down, but funny thing is, two years ago, I was ready to shut it down when I got a message from my long-loster brother.  It’s all good now, so they can do as they please.

  • barely, it crashes my browser.

  • The Geocities of the social networking world.

  • I forgotten my username,  which email address I used.

I did have another account but decided to get it closed after this http://www.orangeinks.com/technology/today-is-international-delete-your-myspace-account-day/

    I prefer Xanga or Blogger

  • Nope I haven’t used mine in God knows how long now. It’s been deleted and everything else plus now it’s just retarted from what I have heard cuz they changed a bunch of stuff around on the site so it’s not even like the old myspace from a few years ago.

  • i used to get addicted to it like 5years ago, that was the time i was so excited receiving lots of friends request.

but no more,i dont use it anymore.Perhaps i am getting ‘older’ ,so i rather be more ‘personal private’ to myself ha

  • Dan, yesterday I joined the newest trend and wrote a “My Xanga History” post.  In it I explained that I learned about Xanga when my oldest daughter and many of the kids at her school started using it.  They then switched to Myspace and then to Facebook.  As I wrote it I briefly wondered what happened to Myspace.  I thought it was an exciting social network but the kids dropped it like a hot potato for Facebook.  Do you think Facebook’s initial format (a collection of small networks intensely connected to your college or high school) is what made it more appealing?

  • I never used it.  Similarly, there’s been talk recently about facebook slowing down. They lost 7 million users last month.

  • deleted over 2 years ago..however, I made one with no friends little more than a picture in case anyone needs to find me. That will likely not happen. They changed so much stuff up. I might not have deleted it if the site hadn’t been unrecognizable when I did come back to visit.

  • one day a couple weeks ago i got a friend request on there – i had totally forgotten i still had one. i went over to check on it for nostalgia’s sake, holy crap my page took like 10 minutes to load. it was ridiculous. and the last person to write on my wall was i think 2008. haha…i think i had only kept it because some of my friends on there hadn’t migrated to facebook yet. they have since. yeah i don’t miss it.

  • Not in years… I had a FB before it became popular.

  • Have never used it.  Always thought it looked ugly and not particularly useful.

  • Never had one.

  • Never. Stupid space.

  • my friend who died only had a myspace – never had a facebook or xanga
or anything else. so i still go on there to leave comments & just
look around sometimes. even though that’s the only reason i really go on
myspace anymore, i’m kinda gonna miss it if they shut it down :/

  • No I never was on myspace or craigslist…too many weirdos.

  • when you log into myspace, doesn’t it say my[_______] or something like that? I haven’t been able to work that stupid thing anymore.

  • I loved MySpace in my high school years and then I discovered Facebook.

  • No, I don’t use your Space. I use my space lmao XD

  • Funny you mention this, I just got a notification in my inbox about a new friend request on myspace.

  • Even when Myspace was popular, I only ever used it for a month or two.  There wasn’t enough to hold my attention and the majority of people I met on there were overwhelmingly flaky.  Looking at Myspace now, I can totally understand why it’s going to be shutdown.

  • That’s what happens when you allow high school drama to run rampant.  I think Xanga will outlive myspace because there’s actual content here.

  • I never used MySpace ._.

  • Nope, it’s still up … but I don’t go on… too much crap!

  • I dont really think ppl should get a myspace because it is sooooooooo… boring.

  • Lol nope. I never really got into myspace anyway. Xanga was always better.

  • Eh, I stick to Facebook for my social networking.

  • I still have a myspace account, I dont use it tho

  • Rupert Murdoch should just turn Myspace into a Conservative fear machine. It’s a proven method of getting more views.

  • I don’t use myspace anymore, I moved to facebook! I only keep my myspace to look through my old messages, they are quite humorous!! xp

  • I used Myspace for its intended use, which was to discover new music. I still have a whole bunch of emo band sample songs that the bands were offering free. Some of the bands, such as Paramore, have become famous, maybe because of Myspace and people like me listening. That’s the only thing that I’m sad about Myspace going, is that the bands are no longer hanging out there, posting bulletins about the cool things they’re doing.

  • Nope..I haven’t used it in years….though I still haven’t deleted my account (forgot my username and password too )

  • I log on to read nostalgic messages sometimes. Ah.

  • I used it a lot after I made the Xanga to myspace jump that my girlfriend at the time wanted. I have loads of pictures, blogs and video’s on there…  guess I should start moving them over before its to late.

  • Ahh, those days~ I deleted my original Myspace over a year ago, I believe. I made a new one but just deleted that one recently too. I love the new Myspace look and themes, but there’s just no point in me using it since my friends dont use it anymore…. :(

  • Ahhh I can’t even remember my login for my MySpace. I think they should get someone to re-do the whole site and keep it basic.

  • noooooo. absolutely not! i signed in just the other day and was like, “ugh, and this is why i left.” lol

  • I checked it out after a few years, and I can see why it’s failing. It tried to imitate and outshine Facebook too much. Fool’s gold

  • @Cestovatelka - you had a girlfriend?

  • I haven’t used MySpace in a few years, but I have so many pictures on it & all the comments friends have left me since I joined in 05. I think the nostalgic in me is whats keeping me from deleting it forever.

  • @jane - And who the heck are you, hiding in anonymity as “Jane”?

And to answer your question: no, I have never had a girlfriend. Boyfriend, yes – but no girlfriend.

  • I still use myspace!

    mostly for music though :P

  • I tried to shut it down but I can’t get through the email account that I used for it.

  • I tried using MySpace again about a year ago, but it just doesn’t work out because there’s nobody left to use it with.

  • Haha, heck no.  Haven’t in years.  I only ever used it for a few months; it was utterly boring, sparkly, and lame (a Twilight vampire?).  Perfect for 13 year-old girls.  Which I suppose I was at the time . . . No I think I was 15.

  • I had a MySpace years ago, but only used it for a month or two because I got bored with it.

  • all about facebook now. Hopefully Xanga doesn’t die on me.

  • oh goodness! I need to get all my pictures off there ASAP!
