Irene Did Not Blow as Hard as Expected
Hurricane Irene hit the shores of the East coast and has caused a few power outages.
(This is Irene Pfeiffer. She is the answer to Summer’s question).
There are some Republicans that are saying that the National Weather Service is no longer necessary. They want to cut funding for the program so the government is not supporting the organization.
The thinking is that we have news stations that get out the information about bad weather now. Here is the link: Link
Do we need a National Weather Service to warn us about bad weather?

Uhhh. Yuh?
I’m fine with that as long as they loosen FCC regulations and let us have naked weather ladies.
Twitter is faster than the news and weather service… and its already in place.
Sure. But unless it’s constitutional it should be privately funded.
And where exactly do these stations get their weather information? Don’t they usually use the National Weather Service?
Irene blew pretty hard here.
Leave it to the free market! It would save money, and they could do a fine job. Though, something about it just seems not right to me.
@Rob_of_the_Sky - That’s how I understood it. Even the Weather Channel was saying, “The National Weather Service is reporting….”
And twitter? Really? As a news source? Yeah, no. I’m sorry, I want my hurricane info from a meteorologist, not some bonehead in West Virginia tweeting “it’s raining.”
@Murphy_Rants - Know what you mean about the tornadoes. It’s reassuring to have something to listen to on the radio when the crap hits the fan.
Irene blew us good here in Southern VA.
yes we do! there should be some type of general basis for weather forecasting. Are we going to listen to the weather channel more than a government-backed weather service? Well I wouldn’t. Also, I’m aware there’s thousands upon thousands of anti-terrorist/ secret service companies out there that haven’t accomplished much of anything and they can’t all stay connected. I feel cutting a few of those could also help the gov. Well that may be a bit controversial, but I’m sure there’s lesser programs not widely availiable to the public that can be cut- why weather of all things? It basically runs our day to day life.
Hi Dan, I’m in a bit of a hurry tonight so I can’t read your entire blog entry. However I did notice the subject line so I presume that’s what you’re referring to and I have to agree with you that sometimes fellatio can be a bit of a disappointment. Better luck next time!
Wait, they’re fucking serious? Of course you need a National Weather Service. They issue all our warnings. The guy pointing at the map is not a meteorological scientist. They spread the word but they do not make our forecasts and make our models. They report them. As someone who has gone through a Category 5 hurricane and my fair share of tornadoes with nothing but a weather radio in those dire situations when the power grid goes Ka-boom-y!, trust me, the notice was really fucking appreciated.
@leaflesstree - Well, there are more reliable Twitter accounts out there for weather, but again they get their weather from the NWS, so the NWS is still important.
if Irene doesn’t blow hard enough, then spank her ass harder.
Sorry but the storm hit us Friday night and we had to be evacuated. From then until about twenty minutes ago, I was without power, and we relied on the radio (ie NWS) to help us through the blackout.
Irene blew hard enough that all the water in the Pamlico Sound was blown out, like Moses raising his staff over the red sea, and this guy was out walking on it, collecting shells, before the water surged back in. Video was amazing. Thar she blows!
We need the National Weather Service and NOAA, but the news outlets were horrible covering this storm. I stuck with Kurt from Outer Beaches Realty; he was much better at updates, photos and video than any news or weather outlet.
let’s stop funding the republicans
She really didn’t. But of course we need a national weather service. We’ve got to be able to blame somebody other than i’m_such_a_leet_weatherman_101@twitter.com.
Yes
Whomever says that they don’t want as many assets to make their life better and safer, and to take advanteage of everything so many people had worked for throughout history to provide these things is a damn fool. If you’d prefer to live under a rock I could direct you to a few good sized ones, but I’d pray that one day that God has a sense of humor and brings one of those hurricanes to your little rocky doorstep.
… on the topic of ridding ourselves of useful services, while I was deployed they canned NASA in America?! SERIOUSLY?!..dumb. World 1, U.S 0… (actually I’m sure the ratio is much higher, but for the sake of arguement, just work with me on this one)
YES XANGA, I have returned.
Um Saturday night my entire area had tornado warnings thanks to Irene and I would have never known about them if the National Weather Service didn’t interrupt my regularly scheduled program to warn me. When we went to the basement, we tuned our radio to the NWS, not to any other programming. Nothing else was coming in clear because of the freaking storm. Thank goodness we didn’t actually get a tornado, but I know that at least two did touch down and damage properties and I’m pretty sure those warnings probably saved lives. If the Republicans also want to be responsible for an increase in weather-related injuries and deaths, then I suppose they can feel free to cut funding to the NWS >_<
Uhh… yeah… you kinda do need a weather group. On top of that, it was worse in some areas than others. Just because it wasn’t as bad as what was expected doesn’t mean it still wasn’t pretty bad.
The news isn’t going to keep track of every single “little” twister that pops up in the country, or every major storm that hits a small town area. That’s what the NWS takes care of. When they interrupts TV or Radio, that’s when us small-town folk really pay attention. I think it would be idiotic to get rid of it.
Let’s get rid of it. In the early part of the country the government had exclusive access to the weather and it turned political. Businesses didn’t want to loose coustomers so the weather was down played. Because of it many people lost their lives in the great blizard near the end of the 1800′s. That’s when weather forcasting began to go into the public. Let’s put it there completely.
Republicans are wrong sometimes, we should get rid of them.
Also, that woman’s eyes look like they’re gouged out. Maybe she read something really stupid on the internet.
wonder if they realize that those news stations that inform us use the nws to get their information…..
we live where there are tornados so I dont’ know what you’re referring to but I like to know when I’m need to get in the bathtub with a mattress over me.yeah!
uh yeah, say that to the people who lost loved ones in the storm, or loss thousands of dollars of damage in the flooding. people who say irene wasn’t that bad are insensitive.
yes we need the warning but the media is all a bunch of drama queens.
does that mean no weather.com? I like my weather.com
Just like Americans don’t need medicare! Unemployment! Women services! Fuck the republicans.
She is indeed a hot Irene. Didn’t know one existed! ;]
you dog you!
I have to admit that I came into this thinking this was another crank idea unearthed from the Ron Paul wing of the Republican Party. It may still be. It would be one thing to claim that the free market could provide a better service. But it’s another thing to point out that the free market is already providing a better, more accurate service, as the article does. Hmm, food for thought.
Here in central NC we just got some gust of wind and plenty of rain. Power didn’t even go out.
Generally, yes. But in my particular case, I’d say no. The storm alerts on my tv show up mid-storm, or worse, way after it’s over and while I’m trying to sleep as a nice reminder to turn off my tv. Still gotta consider myself lucky for the time being as I only have Chicago weather to deal with, but I’ll be scared shitless of these hurricanes when I move to Florida. Glad to hear Irene wasn’t as bad as expected though!
I don’t think I’ve ever watched the weather channel…
This was a warning from god.
So anyways I have so much on my mind, I have the option of living rent free, I have more opportunities to meet people since I am unemployed. This guy was making an issue out of small stuff, those things really annoy me, I don’t like arguing over dumb stuff.
I got my power an hour ago! A tree had a huge honey comb, needed to be cut down, it was arching. I saw a neighbor woman have sexy movements, I was turned on by her postures, the other guy neighbor must not feel temptation, I certainly did. I might be an oversexualized individual (embarrassed )
Alright kiddos, I can now go to the store and buy cold stuff
P.s. I’m gonna have a great sex life!!!! More about that later.
better safe than sorry
Dan, you’re supposed to be a Christian and yet you put on sexualized images in your blog.
Why are you hypocritical?
I hate to restate what other people say, but I’m pretty sure the news gets its sources from the Weather Service. They are not as great as relaying information, but that is, after all, what the news is for.
I am sure that if Irene blew harder than predicted the Republicans would be saying that is the National weather Service’s fault, too.
The Republicans are idiots. Just defund everything to save everyone precious taxes. Who needs highways, emergency services, or monitoring of potentially dangerous weather conditions. Saving taxes is more important than everything.
@Murphy_Rants - this.
Pfft… Republicans..
