  • Are Black Men More Violent?

A black man in Texas had his execution for murder stopped because of the testimony of a psychologist in his trial.  The psychologist indicated that black people are more likely to be dangerous than other people.  Here is the link:  Link

What is interesting is the psychologist indicated that men are more violent than women too.

Statistics tell us men are more violent than women.  Men are more likely to get arrested for murder than women and are more likely to get arrested for rape than women.  Here is the link:  Link

The funny thing is no one would doubt that men are more likely to murder or rape than women.  You don’t even need to bother to check the link.  There is nothing controversial about it.

Now black men account for 50% of the murders by men in the U.S. even though they are 12-16% of the population.  Black men account for 31.8% of the arrest for forcible rapes in the U.S. even though they are only 12-16% of the population.  Here is the link:  Link

So it is easy for us to accept that men are more violent but we struggle with the issue of black men being more violent.

  • is this a trick question?

  • In porn they tend to be more aggressive. That shit turns me on.

  • I would say they are more violent due to the environment they grow up in (poverty, drugs, fatherless homes, etc) and not due to skin color. The book Freakonomics has an interesting perspective on crime rates within racial communities.

  • I’m going to scream.

  • It doesn’t matter if black men are more violent or not.  The solution is for women to take over the world and shoot ignorant assholes on the spot after they act up the first time after turning 18.  That would fix the world in like a year.

  • @AlluringAddiction - hahahaha! that made me laugh out loud :P

  • It’s probably because they are raised differently, because they’re statistically more likely to have a lower income and live in single parent households. I believe it’s also true that african americans have a higher level of testosterone than other races, so that might account for increased aggression and such.

  • Black autistic homeless people are the cause of everything that’s wrong in the world!

  • Are men more violent? Are women less violent? Or are women just getting away with more because reputation goes a loooooong way in a courtroom full of jurors raised in a sexist society that cuts both ways?

And does not reputation work the same way for men? Rich men hire excellent lawyers and hide behind classy vocabularies and good suits. Are the poor more violent? Or just getting convicted more often?

Is it so odd to say that color and ethnicity is subject to the same reputations and preconceived notions? Acquittal does not equal innocence. Conviction does not equal guilt.

ARE men more violent? Why should any man, and any woman who loves her man, support this fucking stupid prejudice?

    Are Black men more violent?

    No.

  • It doesn’t matter what color they are, men in general are much more violent and commit more crimes.  Let’s just rid the world of men.  Might be less crime, less wars, and generally a more peaceful, well-run place.

  • men have that thing called testosterone, which helps sex drive and violence.  Black men are no more violent than white men.  I work with mini criminals, black kids are taught to steal, fight etc… in their environment, it’s the way of life ( at least in poor areas), but they are usually much calmer than our white students, and hispanics, lots of anger in those two groups.  I bet you didn’t even want my long essay answer!  Ha Ha

  • @musicmom60 - You tell um sister!

  • @Rob_of_the_Sky - ha ha ha omg LOLing so hard right now

  • @musicmom60 - I agree!  We have to keep some of the docile hot men around though!

  • I don’t think so…..

  • You began with a comparison of arrest rates of men vs women and black men vs non black men.  Then you asked if black men are more violent.  What time period are we comparing with the present?

  • No. I believe it all depends on the way a person is raised.

  • Kick a dog, daily, and feed it gunpowder- Lo and behold: A Mean Killing Machine.  Upbringing is 80%, and can neutralize the 20% that is nature.  I, of mixed race, was inclined to brute force.  My parents weaned me well off of it.  I am a gentle, respectful man of peace today.

  • No Black men are just the Black sheep of our Society whose received attention from Media. Black men are just more liberal in openly expressions and in action and just living in more suppressed environment and judgmental society. If we lived in a truly liberal society, people who dont express their emotions might conisdered or revaled to be the real sociopaths! ;-p

  • It seems like white serial killers would skew the percentages a little bit more, but I guess the mainstream media makes it seem like serial killers are everywhere. @AlluringAddiction - I actually lol-ed at that!

  • Maybe u could see if there is a study on men and women: Those who suppress emotions more are likely to have violent puffs that those who express their emotions.

  • A person on drugs is more violent, male or female, and all skin colors.

  • Yeah, ok. I get you’re trying to be provocative/funny/whatever. But it’s starting to get past the point of being tiresome.

But as long as we’re on the subject – the reason that this sort of testimony was troublesome is because it caused the jury to focus on statistically irrelevant factors in deciding on sentencing. Even granting (for the sake of argument) that it’s true that black men are statistically more likely to be violent that white men (and that’s quite a supposition – using arrest rates as evidence for that claim is problematic, for some pretty obvious reasons), it doesn’t follow that you can conclude that a particular black individual is likely to be violent. The erroneous statistical reasoning here is much the same as the erroneous statistical reasoning you committed in your previous post about atheists and agnostics; that is, even if it’s true that autistic individuals are more likely to be atheists, that in no way licenses the conclusion that a particular atheist is at all likely to be autistic.

What’s wrong with this sort of reasoning was already explained in considerable detail (especially well by bryangoodrich), so if you care to understand where you’re going wrong, I refer you back to the comments on your previous post.

  • i don’t think so.

  • Yeah Dan, now you’re just trying too fucking hard.

  • I grew up poor where my mother worked to make ends meet in a single parent home yet I’m not a violent criminal or involved in drugs or any stereotypical behavior-I’m the opposite and am anti-criminal and have self disclipline. the individual is a savage psycho, not necessarily their environment where they blame on other people or everyone but themselves. pyschos of either gender, any race, are prone to violence, etc. there are exceptions, however, stats aren’t in the male favor.

  • @AlluringAddiction - ooo nice new profile pic! hawt

  • ITT: How stereotypes come into existence.

    –Yao Wentiao

  • Black men are more aggressive just like pit bulls are more likely to attack *rolls eyes*

This is silly.  Clearly they’re the only ones that get caught!  Duh

  • no, I don’t think so

  • Going after blacks and atheists is white man’s violence.

  • Do you mean historically speaking or within our specific American culture in recent decades? Also, are we talking about culture (“black men have culture of violence”) or genetics (“black men are violent because of their evil negro genes”)? These distinctions can help foster a more productive discussion, Dan!

  • Are black people allowed to answer ?

  • statistics…    they are great to debate, but that’s just about it

  • Hold up, why was the execution stopped?? I can’t check the link right now… but even if black men are more violent, doesn’t mean anyone should be like, “it’s okay, you’re black, you’re more likely to act that way so we’re going to cancel your execution.” That’s just…dumb. I’m not necessarily for the death penalty, but bringing race into something to defend someone? Wow.

That being said, I don’t believe it’s race so much as it’s environments and how a person grows up, as well as stereotypes reinforcing someones behavior (there’s a real psychological term for that but I forget what it is).

  • There is not a good answer to this one.

  • Ugh, this is ridiculous. A lot of the racist stereotypes that our society is rife with are really obviously to do with class, not race. People in poverty, which unfortunately in our country people of color are more likely to be, are those that are more likely to be violent, not people of any particular race. Violence, abuse, drugs, alcohol, a likelihood towards less education or poorly-used language… all of these things are more prevalent in low-income homes and neighborhoods. It’s baffling to me how this racist mentality overrides the glaringly obvious correlation. And if you have a problem with the state of affairs, we need to start addressing what I like to call the “Fox News” problem, which is the extremely wealthy (and largely white) minority pushing all of this spurious misinformation to the easily-swayed in our country.

  • Are American Idians better with a tomahawk?  Do bluebirds sing better in the morning or in the evening?

    Oh really,..come on…….

  • If anything it is the culture of the inner city poor in the United States that is more violent.

  • No. They are just convicted more frequently than their white counterparts.

  • For all the shit you roll in, it’s interesting how clean a blogger some of your audience can regard you.

  • I have trouble believing the premise that women are less violent than men. I think it’s just a matter of what ends up being prosecuted. Same deal with the racial issue.

  • Who more violent, a poor black man who killed a man over something stupid, or a rich white man who takes his country to war killing hundreds of thousands in the name of patriotism? I mean, if we’re talking numbers here…

  • Angry, for a number of reasons, perhaps but more violent? I don’t take stats blinkly, no matter who the authority is and ONE psychologists opinion ain’t worth squat!! A quorum of opinions, maybe, but not just one. That’s like accepting ONE mans opinion that god and Jesus are valid or invalid. Peace

  • I am alone. I wish therr was an easy way out of my problems, I’m scared I will have a painful costly health problem somewhere down the road. I’m scared of death, the thought of dying frightens me. I believe hell awaits me. Will I be reincarnated into an animal? Will I be reborn into extreme poverty? Wilk I cease to exist forever? I must know! If I knee therr was a hell, I would go to church everyday and pray to jesus.

I still have no friends, but I am in love with a boardgame, chess :) Without chess, I would not know what passion is. Believe me, comming from a virgin, passion is at a low in my life. I want to write a chess book oneday, but too bad I am a lazy bum. Today I ate delicious mexican food.

I am saying this on here because I am an attention whore.

  • Maybe it’s just guys with higher testosterone levels.

  • They certainly are in my area, but I do believe it has to do with how an individual is raised, and what sort of culture they are exposed to. Take for example the people in my *area: Most minorities, blacks included, receive less education and a lot more prejudice than they do in the northern states. (It’s really weird… most of the black families in my area, and the ones from up north are very, very different from each other in behavior, speech, education, and clothing) You need look no further than some of my family to see blatant racism. (my grandpa specifically hired black workers for his business, because he said he could pay them less without complaint) And not only do the vast majority of white people in my area dislike black people (mind you, I myself hate racism), but vice versa. Most of the minorities are poverished as well, and many of their children are taught and conditioned at a young age to take what they need from society, and hate the white people and people in authority. All of this combined, and you’ll get a much higher rate of crime from the minority. I can look at the news at anytime, and there will always be 75% more arrests of black people, than any others. (Though, there are three white families in my area that have made the headlines plenty of times, and everyone that knows them refer to them as ‘white trash’; I went to school with one, and my mom works with another; both were/are total buttholes x.x but I’m getting off subject…) Conditioning, culture and class. These things are responsible for good or bad people, not skin color.

As for men vs women, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that men are more violent than women. Haven’t you ever heard of testosterone? >:|

*For the record, and just in case you’re curious, I live near Mobile, Alabama.

  • I call BS on this one. People with repressed issues would be more likely to have more violent leanings. No race or colour is attached to whether you’re more violent or not.

  • What I find interesting is that on the same day Troy Davis was executed so was a white supremacist – Lawrence
Brewer – for the horrendous murder a black man.

    One execution had
world-wide protests and the other none.

    Selective outrage? Racism among
the anti-death penalty crowd? Just asking.

  • people handle their problems the way they were taught. and black men get caught because they are sloppy. and like to brag. < and this is coming from a black woman.

  • Yes, they tend to be more violent. But I don’t think it’s because they are inherently so. I think it’s because most of them are not well-educated. education gives you the tools to not have to use to violence.

  • “ladies and gentlemen of the jury, remember before you sentence this pathetic creature…he might not be guilty — but bein’ a darkie, chances are pretty good he is.”

  • @midnightblu3 - Hey, buddy?

“African American” is not a race. Neither is “white,” or even “Aryan.”

  • Pretty useful information, thank you for your article.
