  • Key To Avoiding Rape

Police in New York are coming under fire for suggesting women stop wearing skirts so they can avoid being raped.

    skirts

Multiple sexual attacks have taken place and so police stopped women on the street and told them they might want to avoid wearing skirts. A police officer stopped two women in the area and asked them if they “knew what the suspect looked for.”

“He pointed at my outfit and said, ‘Don’t you think your shorts are a little short?’” Here is the link: Link

If a rapist is raping women with short skirts, is it inappropriate to tell women not to wear short skirts?

  • I wear skirts all the time and I’ve never been raped.

  • yes – if that is what this particular serial rapist is targeting. it’s just prudent. but telling women to stop wearing halters/short skirts/tight pants JUST because it might attract the wrong attention IS wrong. this rapist will be caught. and i seriously doubt he is targeting ONLY women in skirts.

  • No but some will be so offended that someone dared to warn them about a rapist who targets girls in short skirts, that they will ware short shirts and end up raped

  • i stopped wearing short skirts in like 8th grade

  • You read RT, don’t you?

  • If people would use good sense and attempt to factor in the intention of what is said to them, the world would be SUCH a better place.

  • Yes.  It is informing them for their safety.  What they choose to do with that information is their own business!!

  • short skirt = free sex. Sounds fun.

  • Thats why I stopped wearing them…

  • I don’t see why anyone would have a problem with getting some advice that might help to keep them from getting raped.

  • I sincerely doubt rapists only attack women wearing short skirts. Besides, aren’t most rapists someone who had some sort of relationship or contact with the victim? Why would the clothes matter then? A better tactic would be to start a campaign saying that it’s the attacker’s fault and not the victim’s.

  • @TooComplicated2Explain - because its for a specific serial rapist targeting women in short skirts.

  • In this particular case where there might be an MO of short skirts/dresses the police should inform the public but without the judgment of “Don’t you think your shorts are too short.”

  • That’s like if a rapist has an MO of raping blond women, telling all women with blond hair to dye it brown.  It just isn’t practical and they’ll find a different way to get at you.

  • Wouldn’t it be just as safe to stay home instead of exercising our right to wear what we want or are comfortable in , and while we’re at it keeping an eye out for situations that lead to these attacks? I mean, no offense, but in many situations, the rapes occur because the ladies in question don’t recognise a possible danger sign, and sequester themselves, however it happens to be so, and then boom, the crime is commited? Awareness and acccompaniment with someone trusted can put off the opportunity that is provided for the act to occur. You can’t stop someone from a body snatch, if the means and opportunity is available, but awareness instead of obliviousness can do alot, given the chance… Peace

  • Considering that like 70% of rapes are planned in advance this is a load of crap. When will we stop blaming the victims and actually hold the criminals accountable? Seriously.

  • If this is about a specific serial rapist, I see no problem INFORMING women of what the rapist is looking for. But, if it’s short SKIRTS, why did the cop mention how short her SHORTS were? I think what and how the cop said it was a little… odd and unnecessary. Inform them, yes. But not in the way he did. Basically, I agree with @TiredSoVeryTired -

  • Makes perfect sense. Everyone knows that women are generally to blame for being raped.

By the same token, if there were a mugger in the area targeting businessmen, I’m sure the police would go around telling guys to stop wearing suits.

  • If he’s picking out women specifically in short skirts, then letting women know that is no more harmful than letting them know he’s picking Hispanic women, or blonde women.

Saying “he likes women in short skirts” is very different from saying “your shorts aer short so you’re putting yourself at risk to be raped.”    That’s just horseshit

  • This really happends to younger girls like my age. And I rarely wear skirts because I dont really like wearing them. I prefer to wear pants and shorts and capress. I cant stand skirts. I only wear them on occations.

  • Skirts don’t make you easier targets for rape…They should make sure to tell all the men wearing kilts or utili-kilts to stop wearing them because they are essentially skirts and that would make them equally targets for rapists…I mean, it’s easier to get to someone wearing a skirt (easy access as all my guy friends tell me )  but police shouldn’t be telling ANYONE to stop wearing skirts because it might make them an easy target.  They should tell people also to not wear red or blue or white t-shirts because it makes them easy targets for rival gangs…it’s kinda dumb, rapists will rape whomever they chose, skirts be damned!

  • It is never right to place blame on the victim.  A 100% of the time  people that were fatally shot , were not wearing protective gear, should officers  be telling everyone to purchase bullet proof vest. or to carry riot shields.

  • Tell those bitches what’s up …their vaginas!

  • If you want to avoid rape just say that you have AIDS and want a commitment first. That and wear ten pairs of leterhosen.

  • @RazielV - I have a feeling in this case, it’s down. On the ground.

  • @FuntimeswithGoldie - Or in the air if the rapist likes that kinda stuff. Lift that ass and shake it like it’s full of gold!

  • @RazielV - You can rape someone in the air? You’d have to be a big motha to pull that off. Of the Mike Tyson variety for sure

  • Out of the thousands of women who wear short skirts, there is probably something more specific than short clothing that he chooses his victims for.
But, if I lived there, I would have the common sense to be cooperative and non-provocative until the rapist was caught by not wearing anything short. Self-preservation is higher on my list than my pride to wear what I want to wear. If it’s something like hair color of build, well there’s measures one can take to avoid it, like not going out alone after dark or going home with a guy you don’t know. Also, carry a gun or a large dildo so you can rape his butt hole or beat him with it. That’s why I carry both.
On the other hand, I would not want the police walking around telling women to change. It makes it seem that if a woman gets raped, then it is her fault because she was warned.

  • Huh. I actually hadn’t heard about that and I live here. lol. Strange b/c I remember one of the attacks were captured on security cam, and that woman was wearing pants, if I remember correctly.

Maybe if all women just wore burkas it would prevent all rapes.

  • @FuntimeswithGoldie - Or have telekinesis. Psysex is fucking amazing.

  • This is just stupid.

But it’s kind of what I’d expect from a city that considered an extra tax on non-diet sodas and requires calorie content posted in fast food restaurants, all to “protect” its citizens. :P

  • I don’t get this. Aren’t women who don’t wear short skirts more likely to get raped since they’re obviously uptight bitches who ain’t gonna put out willingly?

  • The way I train for chess improvement is what I call the snap shot. I check out a game, and all the valuable things I learn from that one game, are similar to great punchlines we remember from movies we enjoy, or parts.

For example, in the Lion King, I will never forget the part mufasa tried to save simba. Now, in chess, a lot of trick, patterns, tactics, and ideas that I learn after witnessing twenty games, I am bound to forget a lot of valuable information. However the ones I remember can stay with me for a life-time. For example, I learned what I call V power. That is when a bishop travels to the other side of thr board with tempo. I will not define tempo, sorry.

I also learned that the best way for black to win is to undermine the center. And the best way for white to win is to put black’s pieces into a state of passivity. So yes, I am recently studying chess, I have played since I was five, and… this game gives meaning to my life in a world where social contact frightens me, and where I have no talents, like drawing. I don’t have the attention span to read a book. In conclusions, I cannot eat healthily, live normally, so I spend my days alone, chess program, movies, and pokemon. Oh yes, and xanga.

  • I read studies where rapists focused more on the way a women wears her hair instead of clothing. If her hair is in a messy bun, it’s easier to control her head. If she has long hair, it’s easier to grab her. If they’re suddenly told how to wear their hair, it’s getting ridiculous. The police should spend more time catching rapists than worrying about what the public is wearing.

  • It’s practical advice. I have heard that skinny jeans are actually a huge deterrent for rapists. Not even kidding.

  • Here’s a better idea: just stop going outside. That way, the only man to rape you will be your husband.

What I want to know is, who allowed these chicks to leave the kitchen?

  • I think it would be better if they issued a news bulletin saying that this particular uncaught rapist SEEMED to be going after women in short skirts, rather than stopping them on the street and playing modesty police.

And every time I see an article about how women should be careful how they dress in order to avoid rape, I remember how I was wearing a loose-fitting turtleneck and dress slacks the last (and only) time a guy tried to take advantage of me…

  • Makes for an awkward conversation, that’s for sure.  I’d send out a news alert to the tv and radio stations instead.  Some people will take offense at anything and don’t like being told what to do, no matter how sensible the advice.

  • I wear skirts all the time, but I don’t live in US so i don’t know if you use to rape women for the way they dress.

  • We all know this isn’t about wearing short skirts but those sick people just need any excuse to have control over a person. Either they should suggest they should stay at home, keep all doors locked, have no friends, no contact to the outside world and never talk to anyone then maybe they can avoid being raped. Or travel in numbers… We all know that most rape cases tend to be from a person close to them not a stranger so changing your dress style will not change anything… Just never be alone with anyone and you can avoid the rape scenario and even then it’s not for sure.

  • while chasing a specific suspect yes.
but as a general rule, don’t tell women what to wear or not. there are rape victims getting raped well dressed in baggy all covering clothes too.

  • Rapists have an illness which makes them think rape is okay. It has NOTHING to do with what a woman wears.

  • you have to admit, skirts=easier access. with jeans on, the rapist would have to hold you down with one hand and try to wiggle your jeans off with the other. chances are he’d have to beat you in the face a few times as well but that’s not the case with skirts. i don’t agree with what the cops are saying to women but they do have a point.

  • @leaflesstree - have you SEEN how big americans are!?! they should’ve implemented this in every state YEARS ago

  • Yeah, blame it on the women. =_=

  • well the key to stopping rape is to wear rompers or jumpers.  can’t pull them up, can’t pull them down.

  • Well today was SlutWalk in NYC, so hopefully these cops got the message…

  • I dont like skirts that much…I only wear them if im forced to or on occations…

  • If  a guy goes so low to even think of rape, I don’t think it matters what you’re wearing. Wearing pants isnt going to decrease your chances nor is wearing a skirt going to increase them.

  • @InternetDominator - I’ve got a sure way to deter a possible rape. If ever approached all I’d have to do is say, “I’m over forty and have had three kids. But if you like I can draw you a map to a more willing partner using my stretch marks.”

If that doesn’t make him go limp, he’s a sick bastard.

  • @RazielV - Only if you’re doing the mind fucking and not the other way around.

  • Be ugly as fuck. In other words: Don’t wear make-up and wear khakis.

  • People are stupid! These police officers weren’t generalizing rape victims’ attire! The rapist they were warning these women about was targeting women in skirts so… people need to chill out.

  • Cops could be dick heads and rapists get raped over and over again by the devil in hell. It’s eternal mother fucking pain fucker.

  • Since the rapist is going for women with lots of skin showing, I think that while he’s at large it’s a safe move for the police to warn women about this specific threat. I think this cop went about it wrong, but at least he tried. The women can listen or not; either way a random rape like what seems to be going on won’t be their fault. Rape is wrong, and some women in short skirts/shorts is wrong, but that doens’t make rape right.

  • I thought the NYP would’ve learn from the mistakes of their neighbor the Toronto Police Department, cause they said the same thing  few months ago.

  • @TooComplicated2Explain - This is a very true statement. The victim is never to blame. However. I know that I SHOULD be able to leave my door unlocked at night because if someone were to creep in and steal my things, or hurt me, or whatever, it would be their fault. But fault isn’t the point. It’s protection. So I lock my door. I’m a small girl, so I don’t go out alone at night. It’s not my fault that I have to do these things, but life isn’t fair, and you have to protect yourself. Once again, it is by no means your fault if something happens to you, I just think women should be encouraged to make smart decisions and not be so trusting of the strangers around them.

Now, I think a warning about short skirts to women is fair. They shouldn’t be forced into anything.
