Yes. When I’m lazy/texting/have a limited number of characters to type with.
It’s always “Christmas” when I write/text it.
All the time. Love the picture!
meh… either way
I don’t believe in ‘god’ so Xmas it is =]
All the time.
I have no preference (but I see what you did there).
Christmas…Xmas just doesn’t sound right
X = Chi (Christos)
besides, “chi” is a word for “life energy” big deal
“X” has been used as a symbol of the word “Christ” for a thousand years. It was started by the church. I have no problem with writing “Xmas” and even used that abbreviation when I was the secretary at a conservative Baptist church.
Never made the connection, but true Chrsitmas it is the celebration of Christ; and the mas could stand for carnival. So the carnival of Christ is coming soon…
Nah, I usually go on living a real life instead of this stuff.
Either or. I prefer Christmas but If I’m writing, Xmas is easier!
I use either or. If I am writing something formal I will write Christmas. but If I am doing something imformal I will write Xmas.
No. X is a dumb letter. I don’t write xylophone either.
Χριστός = Greek for Christ X has been a symbol of Christ for over a thousand years.
Xmas- Christmas
It’s like saying it’s blasphemous to use the abbreviations PRN for “as needed” or BID for “twice daily”.
PRN= Pro Re Nata – Translated “as needed” BID= bis in die- Translated “Twice daily”.
Ever heard of 12:30 PM? What does the PM stand for? Post meridiem, translated to evening or afternoon.
@FallingSafely - Or, perhaps, like writing BC for Before Christ or AD for anno domini.
@ShimmerBodyCream - LOL…what about X-ray? Or paradox? Example? etx, etx.
I used to write Xmas all the time. But with the advent of political correctness, the PC police are against any and everything to do with Christ, so I began writing “Christmas” again as a way to thumb my nose at the PC crowd.
However, because I’m one of those rare birds that read responses to blogs, I have learned something from all the responses to your blog. Since I have found that “X” has been used as a symbol for Christ for centuries, I will go back to writing Xmas.
Yes, of course. X means Christ.
I say it both ways, xmas and christmas. I don’t think either is worse.
I do however get incredibly annoyed when people go “If you call it christmas, you’ll offend the non-christians”. I’m not highly religious but seriously? How can you be offended that the holiday based around Christ is Christmas? It says it in the name… That’s like vendors suddenly going “We can’t call it Independence Day, we might offend the foreigners”
Both are words for the same thing. I’ve heard it replaced with the holidays and that’s what I use.
X is for Xanga, and without Xanga I wouldn’t be around Summer.
Enough of the cheesy stuff, though. X is used for the word Christ a lot (I had a professor in college who used Xtian in notes a lot). In the end, bitching about Xmas is just an excuse to bitch.
@phillygraphicsgirl - Many, many Jewish business owners put up decorations, some religious, that celebrate Christmas. They greet you with “Merry Christmas.” Same with Jewish buddies I had in the army, and with other Jewish friends. Even some Muslims seem to get into the spirit. Seems the hard core atheists and the PC crowd are more offended than anyone else.
I say both. Christmas is about family, not some religious figure people claim existed.
Sure.
@mamabeans - If I was a mean spirited person, I would probably say that you’re fulla beans, mama.
I like the pic, wait.. what was the question? ha ha
@tdsgsdjfghsdfgdsf - OMG, why do people try to ad in replies, it is so stupid. no one wants your crap! I mean, seriously, get a real job. dan can tell you how to advertize if you ask, I promise!
No, I wouldn’t. Doing that just doesn’t feel right.
I can’t help pronouncing Xmas Ex-mass in my head, so I write Christmas.
X is the Greek letter for Christ. It has been used as an abbreviation for Christ for thousands of years.
I have friends who would upset if I wrote Christmas as X’mas. So to play safe. I will write Christmas no matter what.
I cakk it Xmyth, because it’s based on just another mth… but whoever takes offense at Xmas needs to reed up on the early use of the letter Chi (X) by Christians to signify their saviour.
BTW, I think the Santa girls should be considered more of a problem than a spelling debate by Christians.
I believe the more popular sacrilege these days is not to mention Christmas at all, and just go with Happy Holidays. I’m not sure which is more funny though, people who use these alternatives trying to piss people off, or the people who think that people say them just to piss them off.
I saw rush hour 2. It was better than the first. You know, latinas are considered to be very sexy. Hot sexy latinas who dance and shake their ass. I am starting to think asian women are sexier than the latinas. Latinas have a raw sexuality, asians have a delicate sensuality that my senses prefer. Now, that pic up there of the blonde is incredibly moving, we can agree most white women are not that blessed or have blonde hair. I would say, they are, simply beautiful, perfect faces, barbies. Now consider the personalities, a whole new dimension, all women can be nice, my guess is hispanic women are the nicest, I think it has to do with upbringing. Hispanics humble, family oriented, make tacos together, dance to plain guitars, have village fiestas.
The chinese have dynasties, built the great wall, have clan fights. Very competitive. The aryans look down on other races, so spanish women take the nobel prize, they are hot, sexy, and do not want dynasty. Love is very important to us, novellas, we have the best romantic music, the best lovers, the best food, and our language is better. Now, if your american, I know you think english is better than spanish, but, I can speak both, and, I admit, spanish flows better than a southern woman’s accent. It’s just better, easier to learn.
I would never go Germany, my skin color is brown. You know what though, you ever seen Brazilian towns houses are compacted together like a termites nest, that’s crazy, I could never live like that. I can’t imagine living in the real world. I am stressed enough, and I am a stay at home boy. Too much pressure, I feel judged and socially incompetent around people. I really wish I was normal enough to live a more functional life. I do not know what to live for, I am a failure, but on the bright side, I avoid drama, more peace. There is no way I want to duplicate my genes, I will never be a father, and sex. That’s the way it is, I am at the bottom of this ladder to heavenly purification.
hmmm, I never thought of it that way. I have abbreviated it this way before
I just always say/write Christmas.
Though, I do remember my husband saying Xmas, when we were celebrating Christmas with some other religious family members and he got a lecture about how it’s not supposed to be “Xmas”. I think some people need to lighten up, personally. lol
I use XMas where only I can see it. I know what the X means, at least to me. On cards, etc, I prefer to write it out as Christmas.
No. Xmas, is “taking the ‘Christ’ out of Christmas!” not using the lord’s name in vain, silly. It’s commercializing it for those who don’t want to see it as a religious holiday.
There needs to be a deathmatch…Xmas vs Christmas. That’s the only way to decide.
what @Garistotle said. that’s the only reason i type xmas.
oh, and i don’t feel like it’s offensive to God at all. it’s just shortening a word that takes up too much characters when tweeting.
whichever way you want to do it, whether you want it to be christmas, or you want to take the christ out of it and make it xmas, whatever floats your boat. I probably use xmas a lot more tho
x is a symbol for christianity
No, I don’t abbreviate it. It has nothing to do with religion though. I just think it looks and sounds stupid.
Nope.
I prefer Christmas.
Considering that Jesus was likely to have been born around late September, the celebration of his birth in December is based around the fact that December (near Hanukkah aka The Feast of Dedication) is when Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple to offer the ritual sacrifices for having birthed a son. He would have been about 6-8 weeks old (Read Leviticus 12 and Luke 2:22). Two things are happening by celebrating in December: 1) Christians took over the Jewish Feast of Dedication. 2) Christians took over several pagan winter solstice holidays. So… Christians getting all up in arms about Christmas kinda makes me laugh… they took the day/season over from other religions. *shrugs*
I don’t think “X-mas” is bad, I don’t just cos I don’t like how it looks. Christmas just LOOKS nicer. And I generally don’t abbreviate things, so yeah, always say and write “Christmas”.
It’s just an abbreviation people use in texts and casual emails, there’s nothing wrong with it. People need to stop being so damn sensitive.
@keystspf - YES. Thank you! I think of this every time I see some stupid “Stop taking CHRIST out of CHRISTmas” status on Facebook, and I lol. I also just had a debate with my cousin because he made a post insisting Christmas trees are of clear Christian origin. Um. No. lol.
@EJC102486 - There are a few different stories of the origin of the Christmas tree… One of them is a pagan thing that I have very little familiarity with. Another is a story about Martin Luther… the guy who blasted the Catholic church by posting a list of 95 things on their door that they were doing wrong… The story goes that he was walking through a pine forest and saw the stars through the trees and thought it was so beautiful that he wanted to show his family, so he dragged a tree home and put candles on it. At least, that was the story I was told at the Lutheran elementary school I went to… *shrugs*
I must admit that I’m ignorant on this. Why would anyone be offended over the abreviation of Christmas?
You shouldn’t take the Christ out of Christmas, since that IS supposed to be the point of the Holiday.:P
@keystspf - Mmmm, I’ve never heard the Martin Luther story. I always heard the pagans used to decorate trees with pine cones and candles and stuff for Yule celebrations. Either way, since the origin seems to be debatable, it doesn’t seem fair to insist that only Christians have the right to decorate a tree for the holidays. I think they look pretty, so I’d probably have one even if I didn’t celebrate Christmas.
I think Xmas is lazy so I don’t like to write it.
If they didn’t want people to shorten it, they wouldn’t have made the word so long in the first place.
I prefer X-Mess to any of it. I don’t celebrate it as the birth of Christ (though I am a Christ follower, I believe he was born at a different time of the year). I like the “Mess” part in particular because that’s what the whole season has become. A mess. Happy Holidays.
@dsullivan - Ya know in thinking about it, I don’t know one non-Christian person who is offended by “Merry Christmas”. Sometimes, someone is annoyed when people assume they celebrate it but they don’t mind hearing it. Heck, I knew a Jewish Chief in the Navy who made it his mission every year to see that the single sailors had a place to go for Christmas dinner so they wouldn’t be stuck eating it in the mess hall. And people made sure he didn’t have to stand duty or be at work on the Jewish Holidays. That’s real tolerance… allowing someone to freely practice their religion.
@greene_lily - lol So true!!! hahaha or X-PineMess
I compare the trend to those “open-minded” people who felt offended we call people Indians in this country. They decided Native American was the best to refer to the different American tribes. Only, they failed in actually go to the people asking what they preferred to be called (back in the like 60s). Turns out some guy went to the actual tribes and asked them (around 2004 IRCC). Most liked Indian best (or American Indian), some liked Native American best, really they didn’t care but weren’t offended… but overall what they preferred to be called was by their tribe… Cherokee, Mohawk, Creek, etc. Shame on the “open-minded” for wanting to dictate what others should be called.
I think what offends me the most is when people have a very “kiss my butt” attitude about it. Yes, I understand you have a different belief than me and that’s okay. My husband’s cousin posted this to FB:
“I DO NOT CARE IF THIS DOES OFFEND SOMEONE… AND IF IT DOES, DELETE ME PLEASE THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE…I AM SICK AND TIRED OF EVERY YEAR WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AROUND; THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TAKE CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS BECAUSE IT MIGHT OFFEND SOMEONE…WELL, HOW ABOUT ALL OF THE CHRISTIANS?…WHAT ABOUT OFFENDING US BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING OUR CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS?…CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS!…IF YOU AREN’T CELEBRATING CHRIST THEN WHY ARE YOU CELEBRATING?…CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOR!…CHRISTMAS IS ONE OF A FEW HOLIDAYS LEFT THAT CELEBRATE “MY” CHRIST!…LEAVE “MY” HOLIDAY ALONE!…AND TELL EVERYONE MERRY CHRISTMAS, NOT HAPPY HOLIDAYS!…RE-POST IF YOU’RE NOT ASHAMED!” It’s the attitude that I get every year. It’s intolerant, ignorant, and just plain rude. There are very good reasons for celebrating X-Mess, other than the religious. My response to this is “Why should I cater to your beliefs when you won’t even consider mine?” I don’t really CARE what what you choose to say: Christmas, X-Mass, Seasons Greetings, Happy Holidays. Just don’t be so close-minded that you can’t appreciate the beauty of what someone else believes, even if you don’t agree with it.
@greene_lily - Also, some Pagan rites were adopted by early Christians to help convert Pagans to Christianity, and the rites stuck. Christmas has become so commercialized, I would support designating another day of the year for a true, Christian celebration of Christ’s birth. Since we don’t know the actual date of birth, any day would do, I think.
Leave Dec 25 as a winter holiday for Santa Claus, shoppers, and revelers. Just my thoughts.
@dsullivan - Actually, we do know the date of His birth. It’s never going to become celebrated in Christianity because it’s too inconvenient to change the celebration and people don’t like change. If a minister tried to preach (what I consider) the Truth, he’d be fired. I’ve done a blog on it: http://greene-lily.xanga.com/757073550/the-christ-in-christmas-part-1/ or askelm.com has a great explanation. It’s around the time of the Jewish holy-day of Rosh Ha’Shanah or Sukkot. Which is pretty cool considering what those holy days mean. Rosh Ha’Shanah is the celebration of the new year and Sukkot is the Feast of Tabernacles. (And the Word became flesh and tabernacled among us….) I celebrate Chanukah as the coming Light of the world, when Yahshua was conceived. I celebrate Christmas as the time of year when my family can get together and we have Santa, the tree, etc.
So that’s why I don’t really care how people refer to this season because we all know what it means. I can’t take offense at someone who has different beliefs but I can take offense at rudeness. lol
@dsullivan - back centuries ago people with the name “christine’ would spell it Xene. That’s how popular it was.
@keystspf - I’m right there with you. Are you Messianic?
@greene_lily - I jokingly refer to myself as a Messianic Buddhist.
this is supposed to be controversial right? haha
X = Christ… So, yes, of course!
Some also call it the “Silly Season”…
@dsullivan - @phillygraphicsgirl - I’m hardcore atheist.. Not offended by Christmas or Xmas. Just like spending time with my family, sharing a nice meal and exchanging gifts…
This shouldn’t be a religious debate…. it’s not like most of us celebrate it that way anyway. It’s become a commercialized holiday that everyone celebrates to spend time with the people they love and/or receive gifts.
“Under god” was taken out of the pledge, even though it’s the most popular religion in the united states……………..
I even abbreviate Baby Jesus to BJ. For example, the Three Wise Men travelled far and wide in search of a BJ.
When I was in about the fourth grade we had peer helpers, which were teenagers from the local high school come over and do activities with us. I remember us decorating Christmas cards and I put x-mas on one of them. My assigned helper told me that when you use the x it takes the Christ out of Christmas. I guess that back story wasn’t really necessary since that’s basically what the topic of this blog is saying, but ever since then I haven’t really ever abbreviated it. I don’t even like abbreviating it on twitter for character restrictions. I’m not even all that religious either, but regardless, it is a Christian holiday and it just feels wrong for me to replace Christ with an X.
It always seemed dumb to me to call it Xmas. Nobody is fooled by that. We know you mean Christmas.
@lttlegel@lovelyish - It’s nice to find an athiest who is not offended. I wish you joy throughout the Xmas season.
@TiredSoVeryTired - I just see your pretty face, I know what your body looks like, and I read your comments. Not enough to produce a dream. Cybernetically speaking, would I stand a chance with you?
@RulerofMasons - Thank you, but I’m sure you say that to all the girls. lol
It depends, I will use Xmas depending on who I am texting, I know a lot of uber hard core bible thumpers and I try not to offend them. It is unbelievably easy to step on Christian toes, it gets annoying .
Also a X with a P in the middle of the X is a very old christian symbol, I might bring that up next time with one of the people I know IRL.
@TiredSoVeryTired - YES THERE are many beautiful girls, what makes you special is, your on xanga, I’m certain, you have no trouble with the opposite sex, I do not remember anything you said, I am only impressed with your boobs, and the rest of your body, that is what I know you as. I’m sure you have a wonderful brain, hahahaha.
@RulerofMasons - lol You’re honest I reckon. haha I’m glad I’m special cuz I’m on Xanga.
This link tells you where the letter “X” or Chi came from in the Bible, and why it means Christ. It stems from the Greek word to mean Christ and since it is in His word I don’t find it offensive at all to write Christmas or Xmas.
Since Christmas is hardly about God anymore, it’s probably LESS blasphemous to take “Christ” out of the commercialized hell hole of a holiday.
”X-mas” sounds like an X-rated version of Christmas! I perfer the words ”Merry Christmas”! Happy birthday, Jesus!
I call it whatever piece of furniture I’m decorating. This year, it’s Horsemas, as I’m decorating a rocking horse. Last year it was Birdmas… because I decorated a bird table. I don’t like trees.
But uh… as with so many other commenters, it’s not blasphemous. It’s abbrievated to that for a reason. :3

THIS IS WHAT I BELIEVE…I AM SICK AND TIRED OF EVERY YEAR WHEN CHRISTMAS COMES AROUND; THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO WANT TO TAKE CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS BECAUSE IT MIGHT OFFEND SOMEONE…WELL, HOW ABOUT ALL OF THE CHRISTIANS?…WHAT ABOUT OFFENDING US BECAUSE YOU ARE TAKING OUR CHRIST OUT OF CHRISTMAS?…CHRIST IS CHRISTMAS!…IF YOU AREN’T CELEBRATING CHRIST THEN WHY ARE YOU CELEBRATING?…CHRISTMAS IS ABOUT THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOR!…CHRISTMAS IS ONE OF A FEW HOLIDAYS LEFT THAT CELEBRATE “MY” CHRIST!…LEAVE “MY” HOLIDAY ALONE!…AND TELL EVERYONE MERRY CHRISTMAS, NOT HAPPY HOLIDAYS!…RE-POST IF YOU’RE NOT ASHAMED!”
It’s the attitude that I get every year.
@greene_lily - I jokingly refer to myself as a Messianic Buddhist.
this is supposed to be controversial right? haha
X = Christ… So, yes, of course!
@RulerofMasons - hahaha… I saw Rush Hour 2. lmao
@libradiva - X means Christ, so technically (while we may be lazy) saying Xmas isn’t removing Christ from Christmas.
@TiredSoVeryTired - I see you a lot.
have a nice day.
@RulerofMasons - Hopefully, not in your dreams.
@RulerofMasons - lol You’re honest I reckon. haha I’m glad I’m special cuz I’m on Xanga.
So does Xtina celebrate Xmas? XP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xmas
