  • Googling Your Name

I was surprised recently what I could find out about myself on the internet.  I really didn’t get much by googling my name but I was able to research myself on other sites that provided information.

Do you ever google your own name?

  • Always!  Comes up as towns and guns.

  • Unfortunately, yes. I do what Marshall Eriksen does on HIMYM and I google my name just to make sure there’s nothing incriminating on here which could catch me out and put me in trouble. I don’t have a boyfriend right now, my future career is all I have!

  • Sure, but fortunately my full name is so common that sooo many others pop up before me.

Now, if you Google my screenname…

  • Yeah…All that comes up is the porn-star. Lol

  • I do.  I get like one result from a comment I made on another site some ten odd years ago with an email address I haven’t had since then.

  • My Facebook comes up. And then it starts breaking down to who has my first or last name.

  • I’ve Googled both my real name and screen name.  The real name brings up several people that aren’t me, which is just fine.  My screen name is another story and we’ll leave it at that.  LOL…

  • Yes,  I do. There’s not much to see. You, however, appear to be both an author and a surgeon. You’ve been hiding your light under a bushel.

  • No, but one time my neighbor e-mailed me asking, “Who is this man you’re married to in San Diego”?  It was my father and I’ve never lived in San Diego!  Some of the websites have the information really, really wrong.

  • I’m old and fat and work for NASA apparently.

  • I’ve done the googling bit with my real name and screenname and it’s always so interesting the stuff that comes up.

  • Only when I wanna see some awesome porn.

  • My name comes up as some schizophrenia board thing that has nothing to do with me. I don’t even have schizophrenia. But it’s like the third one down and quite obvious. I like to keep my issues to myself. and if I did have schizophrenia, I wouldn’t want people to know.

  • Although people are dying everywhere, I am still afraid. I’m such a coward. One chance to live, and look how things turned out. I regret my life. How could I be such a failure. I am so sorry for myself. I honestly feel, I was born to fuck up. The injustice of it all is mindbottling. I destroyed my life. I screwed over opportunities. And to top it off, I cannot feel the love of God. I feel invisible, out of touch, no angels, noone to hold my hand, I hug myself to sleep, I should have choked when I took that vitamin.

I’m okay but talking like this, is poetry in itself. And I just want to say to God:
WHY!!! WHAAAAAA Life is too short.

  • I was supposedly a pretty big cabinet member for obama

  • haha yup. But luckily the only stuff that comes up are academic recognitions from high school and college. I try to do my best in watching what sorts of things about myself that I share on here and Facebook, so that nothing can come up later and bite me in the ass lol.

  • secret: I know the correct words to find the real me

  • There are a few things about me..my social media profiles…..but no one will ever be able to dig up any dirt or inappropriate pictures because there isn’t any!!

  • I search once in a while to make sure people i know irl don’t find my xanga :x

  • It’d be a pointless exercise. My name doesn’t link-up with many relevant hits.

  • @howsthewheather - Give me 5,000,000,000 xanga credits or else I’m going to make it my project, for the next two weeks, to ascertain your true identity and pass it off to your real life friends. Your profile picture, http://howsthewheather.xanga.com/profile, and http://howsthewheather.xanga.com/archives are good places to begin my research. And don’t try friends lock, google has your site cached already.

    And yes, I’m absolutely serious.

  • my name is too common =)

  • Yes, and you get pictures of girls who don’t wear enough clothes.

  • @Celestial_Teapot - But, but, will my measly 1,200 credits suffice?

  • @howsthewheather - That will buy you until next week. I’ll knock then for the rest of your “privacy protection money.”

  • I’ve tried, but seeing as Rachel Green is a character on Friends, all I get are articles about the show and Jennifer Aniston.

  • I found nothing on me at least on the first 4 pages so I feel good about that lol even though there’s nothing bad or surprising about me out there (to my knowledge ahah)

  • Every once in a while.  At one point half of everything on the front page was actually me, because I I had won a bunch of awards from showing my dog.

  • I Googled my name recently to see what employers would see. One of the first links was my full name on this popular college campus gossip forum.. It had my name as the title and the message said something like “Biggest whore on campus?”  Then said “For a good time [my cellphone number].  Probably from a scorned ex..  I just hope that people searching me don’t really believe it.  Luckily I got my name off, but my number’s still there.  Oh the joys of college gossip.

  • Hmm now I have to go try.

  • I google my usernames more than my real name. It’s kinda sad that I’ve accomplished more on the internet than I have in real life.

  • I’ve googled my name and found some interesting information on myself that I have had removed, phones numbers and such. When I googled my screen name last, I had gone through years of information I posted on websites and deleted just about everything. The only sites that remained are xanga and Facebook. The internet is a scary place and I’m glad I know better now.

  • Listen , man! No matter how you write in your blogs, its becoming very clear that this is all a conspiracy on your part. This google shit about our names is just another attempt on your part to gather information on your readers. You are worse than George Bush, man ! At least that dude put microphones in wraps of chewing gum that way we enjoyed being spied on while we at our candy. Its only a matter of time, Dan when all Xangans will revolt and ask for your resignation as Dan the Man.

  • I share a name with a famous Disney star (who I, ironically enough went to school with) so that’s who pops up. So hey, if you mistake me for a Disney kid that’s fine by me!

  • yup, just to make sure it is still coming up with other people with the exact same name as me.

it is far more disconcerting when people mention one of the people in my company.

  • yep yep… just to see how many hits i get :D

  • Yes, I have googled my own name, and come up with some very interesting stuff.  An article where I was misquoted, a website listing my name as a member of a group I had declined, and a 50-year old newspaper article describing a distant relative’s wedding.  It was fun to see all this.

  • @TiredSoVeryTired - I feel like the real question in your case is… Why the hell is your creepy neighbor googling you. I would be concerned. And invest in new locks. And a big dog. Named KuJoo who is licensed to kill. Lol!! :) ;)

  • I’m apparently a news reporter from Florida.  =]

  • I have and it’s mostly of chicks from Hong Kong. -.-

  • Yes frequently. Sometimes somebody will quote me on the strangest places

  • Most of the sites mentioning me are genealogical in nature.  I have to mention my home or current town to get any info, though.  Otherwise, there is a hockey player that shares my name, as well as two people who are wanted by the police.  There is another guy in town with my name (who is possibly wanted by the police).  His mother died last year.

  • i thought people were going to kill me with psychotronic weapons, so I blasted my name everywhere.

I’m going to have to change my name.

  • My name is pretty uncommon so when I google myself I get things very specific to me, mostly from some of the modeling work I’ve down, which isn’t a bad thing but used to worry me when I was job hunting.

My screen names are clean thankfully

  • The guy in the picture looks more like he’s OOGLING!

  • I do this all the time, because I want to make sure that future employers won’t find anything freaky. And I have a really uncommon last name, so it’s not that hard lol.

  • My last name is pretty uncommon, so when I google my name the first ten or so are actually me; mostly my high school achievements.

  • I do… nothing really comes up much with name but SN is a different story

  • I used to find the like, one other person in the whole world with my name, but now I see me a lot more than her. So haha on her:]

  • Just shows my facebook and twitter account. A couple of youtube accounts come up as well, but everything is pretty much me :)

  • yes, and my face comes up because I’m famous!!! jk I’m not famous, but pictures of me do come up! :P

  • Only once, and it seems as if there are 85 people in the U.S. with my name…. Weird, cuz I didn’t think my last name is all that common…

  • Mine comes up for a special ed teacher in Singapore… and some odd site where people can make anonymous comments about facebook and twitter users…

  • a couple years ago, I have googled my name.  I found a couple articles about me when me and my 5-man basketball game hit the media.  the team included 3 guys and 2 girls.

  • I googled myself and my old hotmail account. What I see is the trail of blogs I abandoned.. (LOL) and as for my old e-mail, I get some odds n ends … scary in a way LOL

  • i’m all over the internet. type in my name and you’ll find everything. XD

  • Yes, and I’m in a stupid debate with some vapid, materialistic girl. Not with this name though my gamertag

  • So… I googled my own name and found this site called AboutEveryone.com… turns out I’m not the only one with the EXACT SAME comments made about them, with roughly the same number of days between comments… and the same number of “likes” and “dislikes” on said comments. Don’t buy into it… they charge you $19.95 to have your profile removed from their database. Brilliant extortion scheme… not liking it even a little.

  • yes and I am boring only linkedin comes up. I guess thats not so bad :)

  • Yes.. and I found my own facebook lol xD

  • Oh, yes. As a teacher, it’s incredibly important to me that searching my name yields only professional-looking results. I go to great lengths to make sure my facebook and xanga profiles aren’t discovered. Even though I’m pretty boring and G-rated, my privacy is just too important to me, and it creeps me out way too much when kids can search for me and find stuff! I make a habit of Googling myself at least twice a year (more, when I taught high school last year) and cleaning up any thoughtless online comments I made. Sometimes the internet is a scary place…

  • sign up for google alerts. you’ll be shocked to find out WHO is looking for you and WHERE

  • When I google the name @Celestial_Teapot has assigned to me, all sorts of highly accomplished people show up. @Celestial_Teapot has taught me how to be inspired by the accomplishments of all my other identities.

  • Yes, little me is all over  the Internet…

  • @XoGingerSnapps - hahah Gosh, this was years ago.  I believe I had asked her if I was on it or it was one of those sites where you could click on your neighborhood and it showed who lived next door.  I wasn’t worried about my neighbor at all, I mean she already knew where I lived!  lol I don’t remember exactly, I just remember her email asking me (heck it could have been a text, I don’t recall), it was freaky cuz it had me listed as my father’s spouse.

  • @TiredSoVeryTired - You are right.. being your neighbor at that point if they were stalking you it really wouldn’t have mattered!! haha!! That is weird though, sometimes i really hate the internet. lol

  • yup, once.  just to see how difficult or easy it is for friends to search for my website.

  • My Facebook, blogs (not Xanga) and Twitter come up.

  • great pick up line.  I’m stealing it.

  • Very common name, but most of my writing accomplishments pop up.  LOL…I found one criminal with my name as a sex offender in a Florida prison.  Ugh!

  • Just Googled and found myself in all 30 entries of image search and totally covered first 2 pages of regular search. Awesome!
