Is a Xanga Recommend an Endorsement?
I was reading an article about how social media was unable to predict election results.
In the article, the author describes how people tend to retweet, like or follow issues on facebook and twitter even if they disagree with what is being said. Here is the link: Link
So a facebook “like” is not an endorsement of what is said.
Do you recommend posts on xanga that you disagree with?
Comments (40)
Nope.
I endorse all the naked posts
normally I don’t but I know people who do for the sake of generating “discussion”. I would rec a post I dissagreed with though if it was well thought out and well written, but I wouldn’t like a status i didn’t actually like.. I would just comment on it.
Yeah if I want to know what people thinks about a certain subject.
I rec when I like what the author said or if I feel that he/she made an well thought out and informed statement. I don’t understand the point of advertising something that you don’t agree with.
I have recommended posts that I disagreed with because I wanted people to see it and see my response. A rec can be for many reasons.
No. Why would I do that?
Whoa! WTF?! Facebook changed again? When did the “like” button also apply to things you don’t like?
I recommend/endorse anything I think others should read.
No, I normally don’t.
I recommend either good writing or good thinking, regardless of whether I completely agree with the author’s premises and conclusions…or not.
I recommend stuff I disagree with so people will come and see my thoughtful, effective and scathing rebuttal.
I occasionally do.
It took them long enough to figure that out. There’s also the fact that that social media includes citizens of many countries, as well as people too young to vote, who have opinions and express them freely. Social media is a crappy way to try to predict anything.
A rec without an explanation to me feels no good. It feel like the person does not really believe in the rec they give. It’s too easy. If we really like something should’nt we be able to say why. A rec deserves an explanation however short. Otherwise it leaves a person perplex. Unless we rec a comment or a pulse. But to rec a post is different. A rec emplies that we understand and appreciate and we don’t act as a granted critic.
Yes, I recommend posts I don’t agree with. People should know about both sides of an issue.
Not me
sometimes if it is well written, maybe from a different point of few. Of course, generally it is something I agree or “resonate” with. And sometime if I find it really stupid, I might rec it so other might read the article and read my comment.
No, not really.
I think recommending blogs is overated on Xanga. Its like readers recommend for the sake of it or just to be nice. Some blogs are down right boring and they recommend them still. Fortunately my readers understand the quality of a good read and they never recommend mine.
no.
@Lithium98 - when the like feature was created. the short of it is the facebook widgets on other sites which ask you to share the site with your friends, actually just add it to your ‘likes’ which updates onto their feed if they are subscribed to you. i dont recall but i thing if you blog here and have it push to your facebook it appears as a facebook like too.
…
is a xanga rec (or a ‘like’) an endorsement? yes, but more an endorsement of the relevance of an issue than the stance on a topic. people who rec stuff by politicians who are minor should always be in favor of the position, or there is no relevance.
Good question. I once (I was here before for a brief time) rec’d a completely absurd article by some crazy that used to be here. I can not remember her/his name but she was the one who used to write all the stuff about the Catholic church being the end-all, be-all and the rest of us were ignorant. What ever happened to that lunatic?
Anyway…this article was SO hysterical in it’s absurdity that I definitely rec’d it. I guess I will rec an article if I find it well thought out and presented, even if I do not necessarily agree point for point. Rec-ing such an article may help to get it seen by more people and, thus, get a larger conversation of the OP going.
I hope that makes sense. I am on my first cuppa.
No, but I know people that do. And I’m sure there are some die-hard dems or repubs who re-tweet or like or recommend stuff from the other side “ironically,” or for the purpose of mocking the other group.
I do if it makes a good point or starts a good convo
Of course. And I know you do as well. :D
Facebook and xanga are so different. On Facebook you really do not argue its all about casual friendships. Xanga on the other hand is all about that sort of discussion, unless you are a liberal and unable to handle any disagreement with your pontifications
i’m horrible with the rec button….i rarely rec things. but i wouldn’t normally rec something i disagree with.
@The_Eyes_Of_A_Painter - haha. Thanks for the heads up, before i read your page ; )
@jaydedheart - Man, I really do appreciate the comment. At least someone reads my shit around here…
no, that sounds stupid to me.
I might do it on Xanga if I like what I said or thought I made a valid counter-point, but it’s rare.
I see no reason in the world on Facebook to rec or share something I disagree with. That seems really strange!
@trunthepaige - meh
Yes.
@DivaJyoti - “I might do it on Xanga if I like what I said or thought I made a valid counter-point, but it’s rare.”
This must be due to your being the shimmering paragon of argumentative cogency.
@Xbeautifully_broken_downX - “I don’t understand the point of advertising something that you don’t agree with.”
To build discussion, to reward thoughtful or time-consuming write-ups, and to recruit like-minded folks for argument in the comments section.
I will rec something that’s well-written, even if I happen to disagree with it.
To me a rec implies “liking.” Things I don’t like such as caricatures or name-calling, foul language, nudity – anything that poisons the mind and dishonors the Lord – all of that, I will not rec. Even if I were to leave a comment, I would leave it to someone else of like mind to rec that comment – or not.
@Celestial_Teapot - PSHT. NO ONE ON TEH INTERWEBZ WANTS TO BUILD DISCUSSION. XD
Nah..
Occasionally. But i like and re-tweet things I disagree with.
