Nigger Should Replace N-Word
We should use the word “nigger” on news broadcast instead of the n-word. That is what CNN’s Don Lemon thinks.
He is concerned that when we replace “nigger” with the “n-word,” we take the “value out” of what is being said.

I would rather they go back to a more wholesome and carefree time in our history. A time of naivete and the wonder of technology (whaddaya mean “plastic”???), a time of apple pie and homemade lemonade, a time for sitting on the porch waving hello to passers-by, a time when people could smoke on elevators, airplanes and in shopping malls, a time when we said “Negro” and no one flinched.

The word is very offensive, at least on par with the f-word if not beyond. I do agree that in mature settings one should be free to use the n-word when discussing the word itself. However I’m not sure a TV news cast, which has a more general audience, qualifies as such a setting.

hm I think language has a point and words have a value or should have it, I’d say it’s important to use language to reflect reality as much as possible.

@BoulderChristina - In the proper hands, he’s right. As a descriptive of something someone else did, I just did it personally in my VLOG. It could be very very dangerous in many hands, but not in the right hands as I demonstrated.
Or we could just avoid using it all together. Seriously, I get through every day of my life without using it once, unless I am reading Huck Finn out loud or something, but seriously, how often does that happen?

You know as well as I do what he meant. He is not advocating using openly the word nigger, but simply is stating that in some instances the word should be used to defiine why and when its being used. You are a smart man and you know perfectly well, that the Lemon guy would not suggest that the N word should be accepted as a norm or however other racial term you want to give it.

I can see what he means by using it will take away from it (like how women always call each other bitch and slut but mean it in a “friendly” way so when other people call us that its less offensive) however I can’t see this happening because too many people are still WAY offended by the word.
Just like how gay will never be used the way it was intended to be used again, neither will this one.

@Ork58 - Actually, I was joking. I’m hardly ever always serious on Dan’s posts. No, ginger is not on par with those other words. And yes, indeed those other words should be “banned” too. There’s no real use for them. I’ve told black guys off for using the “n” word and they tried to say that I couldn’t tell them what to do, so I told them off even more! They stopped using the word around me. It’s a vile word and so are other racial putdowns like the “n” word. However, for whatever reason “Honky” cracks me up! I guess that’s Mr. Jefferson’s fault.
I don’t think the news should be afraid to use whatever word is needed. For instance if they are coving a story where the word nigger is used then they should be able to use that word. Like when someone says it mean they should be able to report that so-in-so called blank a nigger and is now in trouble etc.
The word it-self is still shocking mainly because it’s still taboo. Just like the word we commonly label “the F bomb”. Basically it’s the Voldemort effect. That said it’s still far more common (Among those our society label as white) to hear someone drop the bomb than it is to hear them say the word, mostly out of fear of being labeled a racist.

@Ork58 - I think it’s hard flat out suggest that one word is more derogatory than the other. Though what you might mean is that nigger has a much more illustrious history. Context and intent is more important than the actual word. A black guy calling another black guy a nigger is just plain ignorant. He’s dissing himself. A non-black person calling a black guy a nigger is not only ignorant but defamatory. There isn’t really a situation where it would be acceptable.

I don’t think the use of a word is inherently bad, and I agree with Mr. Lemon that nigger shouldn’t be censored. I do disagree with calling someone a nigger or a chink for that matter. But, again, I do not believe that if you feel compelled to that you should be censored.
Nigger and cracker are inherently different in that cracker doesn’t really have a negative history. And you’re right because it does come mostly from an inferiority complex, but there is more to it. I take it like….joking about rape. Or using the word rape in a context where rape is just a fun word used for overpowering someone -like I raped that kid in starcraft. For me, it’s not a big deal, but if I had a friend who’s sister was raped, I wouldn’t joke around about the act of rape, and I’d be sensitive about how I used it around them and their family.
You were never called a cracker and had death, torture and persecution associated with it. If you feel no sympathy or empathy for these people that’s one thing. But to suggest that it’s based solely on an inferiority complex is a logical fallacy.
