  • Are You Spending Too Much Time On Xanga (or other Technologies)?

I was reading an article about how some people are spending too much time using technology and cutting themselves off from the World.  Here is the link:  Link

Those people may IM or text instead of having personal contact.  They may play video games or spend time on xanga.  They may spend time on facebook all day.

Are you ever concerned that you are spending too much time using technology?

  • Yes so I have gone technology-less for a week at a time

  • Yes,all the time,I just can’t help myself, you have such awesome posts Dan.I learn so much here.

  • I use a lot of technology but it sure ain’t cuttin’ me off from the world.

  • yeah sometimes I feel like I spend to much time so sometimes I limit myself to only a few hours of surfing a day (excluding talking on skype with my boyfriend and checking e-mail) I usually do it in May!

  • who me? oh fuck no, never.

  • right.  seldom “talk” in real but sending text :P

  • sometimes. I spend all day at work on the computer and then I come home and go on Xanga. But I have no life, so what else is there to do?

  • Hahaha.I spend most of my life online. It’s gotten to the point where my life might revolve around it.

  • Technology, yeah. Xanga, no. I need to get back to posting regularly.

  • college is my world…I need technology for most of my assignments anyway

  • I’m so backwards when it comes to technology that I’m not that worried at the moment. I’ve never even owned an iPod lol.

  • @TheMushyPear - technology doesn’t, but your alcohol abuse does…

  • Nah. I don’t even own my own computer, much less some fancy-pants Iphone or smartphone or whatever. Technology is meant to enhance our lives, not eat it all up.

  • Unfortunately, yes. I’m trying to cut back on it though.

  • but if the whole world is also online, are you really cutting yourself off?

  • Xanga isn’t the real world?

  • technology i irl for sure not prolly…

  • I spend way too much time playing games like Words With Friends and Scramble With Friends!

  • I like a little bit of both

  • The net’s nice ’cause it’s free and there’s no need for commitment!

  • People still IM? Oh, that’s fantastic!

  • yes but i go to school too so.. it evens out?

  • nope.  i know how limit myself.  sometimes i just refuse to turn on the computer and just read a book.  but i do need the technology as i have many friends in overseas.

  • People are a lot more sociable online. I think that’s why certain people spend so much time on their phones and computers.

  • A littleIt took me to I was 25 nearly 26 to get a mobile phone,   even though it is a cheap model (I had to get one only because there are not many public telephone boxes around)  I got a mediction condition where I should not really use a mobile phone,  it is fine at the moment got smaller.Ipod, smartphones etc never owned,  no point having a carrying around a music player with me (I like listening music at home)

  • No, ’cause I have a life off the internet. I work and go out with friends, it’s just when I’m at home I prefer to be on the computer.

  • I’ve been concerned for so long, it’s not even funny. My laptop has been internet-less for a year and a half now, forcing me to borrow other devices and computers. The one I’m on right now is my sister’s laptop, where the headphone jack is stuck, so there’s no sound. It’s that or another computer whose battery is dead, so it’s always plugged in, and terribly laggy and uncooperative. My oldest sister, who actually got me my laptop that has no internet (and whose screen doesn’t display anymore btw, so now I have to connect an older monitor to it, essentially making it a desktop now) got me a Kindle Fire though. I can’t type with it like I do with a regular computer. Now, that is me getting my internet fix.My PSP doesn’t read discs anymore and was my only current gen system that had games on it. My older sister had an Xbox 360, but that red-ringed. My older generation game consoles are missing parts so we can’t work them. The circle of friends I’m with are gamers first, students second. We all also live too far away to actually spend time as people. I miss my old friends, but I don’t text them for fear of taking away their own texts, and facebooking is a problem (which I should have mentioned separately) when I practically spam it with varying posts from news to art to the uncommon status update. I don’t have the same hobbies as I used to in high school, and I don’t like everyone in the circle of friends I’m in. I actually used to exercise. Regularly. *sigh* high school is a reminder of how my college years are lackluster, at least until I transfer.Seriously, when I see friends complaining about studying for finals and/or partying, I’m like… “I’m procrastinating AND not having fun!” I’m at the bottom of the barrel, and I’ve accepted it.

  • must endlessly type!  I have to interact to use my brain.  Otherwise, I go into a void.GIVE ME THE SCAM CELLS, PUTIN! Or something better!  Gene therapy.

  • This really is a big issue, and it’s kind of sad.  I turned off my facebook, so I wouldn’t be tempted to sit on there instead of studying during exams (which as it turns out, there are many other things I can find to distract myself from studying), and my husband’s grandma texted me a few days later, very upset that she could no longer see her family because I had left facebook… I felt a little bad, and then I realized, she lives TWO houses away from us.  She can see her family any time she wants to!

  • I am, but I wouldn’t if I used it productively or for social purposes. I don’ feel bad for actually posting (to speak my mind) or reading my friends blogs and commenting, or messaging with someone on fb, and obviously you can use the internet to educate yourself on things too.The problem is the aimless clicking around, looking for instant gratification which is nice for the second but not awesome, wasting time commenting on sites that wont thank me for it (wait what am I doing?) , and shortening one’s own attention span.

  • You know for me I find myself worrying if I don’t have enough time to blog.  Blogging gives me a little bit of alone, creative, introspective, contemplative time.  Deprived of it for too many days in a row and I get antsy, needing a semi-private place to unload my thoughts.

  • @neurogal - Jeeeez. That was kind of unexpected that your grandmother is so tech savvy, but usually the older generation isn’t. If I had family that close to where I am, I’d be over there all the kickin it and eating LOL. I deactivated my fb too.Sometimes I feel like my only contact on exam weekends to friends is via txting. I’m still in school, so technically I talk to people everyday, but I wonder how it would turn out if I didn’t txt people to chat and only responded to questions of more urgency. Would conversation then in real life become more meaningful? Let’s face it, people are social beings like most every other living thing. If we had no outlet for conversation, I think we’d be driven to go out and talk to someone else before we go crazy…just a though experiment. Maybe I’ll really try it out. Starting…NOW.

  • My xanga hours are usually M – F, 8:30-5:30. I’m sitting at my desk, usually bored, always ADD….Xanga is my savior during the day.

  • Must you rub it in that I hang out at porn sites all the live-long day?

  • Well its like a habit I like competition ,I like to gamble, I also like to waste time, why because I have time to waste. As for blogging the truth I long for acceptance and attention. But when summer arises i try to do things outside and play at night on the computer. I think with most people we need hobbies and friends. As for kids it’s the parents fault to get them off these contraptions.

  • i’m at the point right now where i want to be disconnected. I’m on xanga a lot to help sort through my thoughts and whatnot. i hate facebook and don’t use my twitter account because it’s stupid. I rather read/watch movies/play video games all day.

  • who could say ‘no’ to this…. i mean, really?

  • Oh yes I probably do.

  • When your internet use keeps you from taking care of your responsibilities and actually going out and interacting, yes, I think that’s a problem. Unless it’s your job, then I think that kind of complicates the scenario.

  • Xanga, Video Games/Ventrilo > Real Life. I don’t get hurt :3

  • Eh, I’m rather indifferent to technology I really only use it to connect with friends who are more than 50 miles from me.

  • Showing your age.

  • Chances are if one gave up technology completely, they would be cut off from most of their friends/family.  Times they are a-changin’

  • I’m totally 100% addicted to the internet. But thankfully I don’t lay around moaning if am somewhere without internet access for a week+…Then again, if I wasn’t on the internet I’d just be laying around in my room drawing or reading, so it’s not like I’m cutting myself off. There’s no one to cut myself off from, lol.

  • That depends. Is Technology the same as technology or does the random capitalization make a difference?

  • I’m afraid. I’m afraid for us because we’re going to totally replace physical conversation and contact with digital everything.  But does it really make us happy or is it just a facade? Because I think it depresses and hinders us more than it helps often.

  • I get on FB and Xanga a good bit (though I’m slacking on Xanga). I’m not on them 24/7, though. People who can’t spend an hour without checking Facebook get on my nerves. I’d hate to know what they’d do if they had no phone or computer for a week.

  • Yes, but I’m incredibly bored without technology.

  • i prefer to text than talk on the phone.but i still prefer to talk in real life than use a cellphone.
