  • A Sudden Change of Hair Color

I have noticed that much is being made of the Batman theater shooter having changed his hair color not long before he went on the shooting.

He died his hair orange.  Here is the link:  Link

It appears that people are trying to relate the sudden hair change to some sort of mental disorder or problem.

If I think about it for a moment, a weird hair color does appear to be an indication of antisocial behavior.

Is the sudden hair color change an indication of a problem?

  • I have hair that goes past my shoulders at the moment.  In a few days, I plan on ‘suddenly’ getting a pixie cut and dying it light pink.  Guess I have a mental problem.

  • If it is, I’m a ticking time bomb.

  • Ill go with shimmer’s standard go to comment when there’s nothing to say

    penis

  • This supports the fact that all women be crazy.

  • yes if it happens naturally…

  • In his case, yes.  If he really wanted to be the Joker, he should’ve dyed his hair green.

    Yeah, I’m awful.

  • In situations like this, people will look for anything…it’s human nature.

  • erhm where do I stand on this topic? Sometimes, people do drastic things, as a result of a mental disorder. Other times, they do drastic things, to say they did them =) in this case, I have a feeling that he may have wanted to prove that he was crazy. These things, you will never know.

  • What does a sudden hair color change have to do in the context of a seemingly long-planned attack? I don’t think there was anything sudden about him.

  • so my friends are all crazy for dying their hair colourful lol :p

  • If it is I guess we’re all in trouble.

    Let’s ban hair dye!

  • No matter what color his hair is, he is totally insane.

  • buying 9k rounds of ammo is kindof indicative of something cautionary.

I’m more concerned about the mound of sideburns near his ear that is growing like moss.

  • Gingers be CRAAAZY!

  • I think just because he dyed his hair orange doesn’t really matter. Maybe he was feeling risky. And then decided to feel risker by shooting up a theater. Who knows what went on in his head before all of this. He is still a crazy mofo. :)

  •       In other news, ATF agents have begun a new undercover operation, targeted at preventing mass murders. The spokesperson for the agency tells us they’ve dubbed the sting “Operation Nice and Easy,” and that it consists of plain clothes agents monitoring hair treatment aisles in Wal-Mart and everywhere fine colorings are sold.

No word yet on whether or not online sales will be monitored.

And Chas Dean remarks “One more reason to buy Wen, baby, yeah”

  • rule #6,449: You can’t explain crazy.

  • I wouldn’t say it’s the color itself, but just the sudden change in appearance. It used to be a movie cliche that when a character was either about to have a breakdown, or about to do something crazy, they’d chop off their hair in a violent-looking montage and then cry into the mirror. That’s what I plan to do when I finally snap.

  • LMAO correlation does not equal causation. I honestly do not think a hair color change to a different color equals any psychological problems.

Now the shooter at Aurora, Colorado is evidently psychiatric and has psychological problems but dying his hair a different color (which may be interpreted as him trying to emote to be someone else) does not mean he is a problem.

He does have psychological problems because of other things that he have done (behavior wise).

So no, a sudden hair color change does not indicate a problem.

I think you are trying to correlate two separate items and explain that it’s the cause for that.

And I would very much like to see which research says that “a weird hair color does appear to be an indication of antisocial behavior.”

  • It only seems crazy in hindsight, as one of many things I’m sure that guy did right before he went on his shooting spree. In and of itself, it would not be a concern. Being antisocial does not necessarily mean you’re destined to be a mass murderer. Changing your hair color doesn’t necessarily make you antisocial. Drawing conclusions like that is what is crazy.

  • I think it’s important to note that just because someone shoots someone doesn’t mean they are crazy. Also, just because someone has a mental disorder does not mean they are going to shoot someone.

I am going to quote, word for word, from the book “Schizophrenia for Dummies”.
This is directly from Chapter 16: Ten Myths about Schizophrenia You Can Forget.
    Page 311:

“Myth #5: All People with Schizophrenia Are
    Violent

Unfortunately, the media often sensationalizes stories about
people with mental illness who are involved in acts of violence because it makes
for catchy headlines, feeding into people’s fears and misunderstandings about
    the disorder.

Although people with schizophrenia can be unpredictable,
they’re more often victims of violent crime than perpetrators of it. This is
because they often appear to be frightened and confused, making them look like
    easy prey for criminals.

When individuals with schizophrenia do commit
crimes, they’re usually petty misdemeanors that are an outgrowth of their
poverty and despair. For example, a homeless person with schizophrenia might
urinate on someone’s lawn because he has no access to a public restroom or may
be charged with petty theft for stealing food when he has no money and is
    hungry.

When serious crimes do occur that involve people with
schizophrenia, it’s because their illness is untreated or is aggravated by drug
or alcohol abuse. Acutely psychotic patients may have outbursts of aggression:
Untreated psychosis – as well as the presence of substance abuse – increases the
chances of an individual becoming violent or aggressive in response to voices
they hear, feelings of being persecuted or followed by enemies, or feeling of
loss of control over impulses. Psychotropic medications reduce the risk of
    violence as does substance-abuse treatment.”

That is the word for word
debunking provided by Jerome Levine, MD. and Irene S. Levine, PhD.

  • I don’t think it was the sudden change in hair color that was the issue.
I think they were just running with the statement that he made saying he was the joker and the perhaps he dyed his hair in an effort to look more like the joker.

  • I dye my hair all the time. Lol.

  • I think it’s too soon to firm up opinions about Holmes’s motivation. One thing that seems clear is that he wanted to terrorize  - which makes him by definition, a terrorist. What motivated him to become a terrorist – most of them are either political or social in motivation.

  • I don’t think so lol

  • I don’t think so, but I color my hair all the time since I didn’t get to when I was a teenager, but that’s a whole other can of worms. No, I think there is a fine line between genius and insanity( he was getting his doctorate in some nuclear-science degree), and he was a loner who snapped.

  • Man, I hope not!  I just changed mine to a much lighter color (although not bright orange!)

  • I don’t think that holds any relevance, all sorts of people do this all the time in all kinds of colors. Also it’s *dyed, not died.

  • Are you suggesting that only gingers (even fake ones) are crazy?

  • dying your hair a “weird” color is not a sign of a mental problem or most high school students would have mental problems

  • I think the real problem is that he was calling himself the joker but dyed his hair orange. Fucking orange. when we all know that the joker has green hair and Ronald Mcdonald’s hair is orange. I think he got his clowns mixed up.

  • you forgot to mention it is a phenomenon of the male sub-species

  • Maybe he just felt like dyeing it orange because he felt like it? It doesn’t necessarily have to be a result from a mental disorder.

  • well, it’s because he was calling himself the “joker” that’s why it was a big deal. He is evil not insane.

  • we’ll see more about what he was thinking as time passes by but he’s the only one who knew….

  • Ummm…. aren’t most changes in hair color “sudden changes.”

I mean… most people don’t color their hair one slight shade different at a time. They put dye in their hair and within 2 hours it’s a different color. Suddenly! ;)

  • @Baby_TX_Grl - Most high school students DO have mental problems.

    Teenagerdom

is kind of a disorder in and of itself.

But yeah. It’s ridiculous like… that his haircolor is deadly… not his fully automatic machine gun or whatever tool of death he brought in there to kill people.

  • Sudden hair color changes aren’t an issue by themselves, most people change their hair color drastically when they’re bored with their normal look.  A hair color change like his makes me think he was distancing himself from the crime he was going to commit.  If he looked different then usual, he thought, it wouldn’t really be him doing it.  Ya know?

  • Hrm… well, in the past when I got out of a relationship (one that should have been over a looong time ago), I dyed my hair a new color to indicate a *new* and *refreshed* me.

  • @TakingxOverxMe - please post a ton of pics for us to stalk! Pink hair is awesome.

  • I wonder… I change my Hair color from time to time. I just enjoy change and I like color. I always thought I was well adjusted. But to a lot of people who don’t know me might think otherwise…

  • It’s been a while since I commented here. You’re still asking great questions though, and possibly greater than I remember.

I think that in light of the context, it is an indication of antisocial behavior. But I don’t think that’s any reason to suspect something is wrong with every person who “suddenly” dyes their hair.

  • No, but it is suspect. Especially when he goes on a shooting spree. Why would any woman reject that, he’s so beautiful. Not his actions, though.

  • I change my hair color a lot …. Must be a sign
