Sick Days
I am sick tonight. I am pretty sure I am dying.
I noticed at my wife’s work that they are allowed to miss one day a month due to sickness. We don’t have a special policy at my work but in general, being sick is frowned upon.
I tend to miss about one day a year to sickness.
How many sick days do you typically have in a year?

Don’t die.
What @ShimmerBodyCream said. I almost never call in sick but sometimes if I’m that sick it’s kind of a favour to your coworkers. Feel better.
Feel better.
I rarely get sick, but I get really bad allergies once or twice a year that makes me miserable.
One, in that. I’m just not the type to get sick a lot.
When I worked, I think I called in sick only once the whole time.
a lot. my job allows one excused absence per ten weeks, but my doctor always overrides that and talks to my boss. they only keep me cause i’m smart, but it comes with consequences: my shotty immune system.
sometimes, i come to work sick anyway. i don’t trust others to do my job for me. and sometimes i will do my job from home while i am sick. i generally do not like having to take sick days at all, feels like i’m letting down my students.
Sick days accumulate at a rate of 1/month, but without limit. They get to be cashed out at retirement.
I haven’t started using mine yet.
Now I feel guilty. I may take one tomorrow because I spent most of the weekend hacking up a lung. My throat is raw and the thought of having to talk all day and maybe cough in people’s ear is not a savory one. I am of the school of thought that it is better not to contaminate the workplace with one’s germs, sneezing and coughing. One day off might save weeks of misery down the road.
So far I have had fairly generous sick day packages (e.g., usu about 8 or 9 days a year) and I usually take about 2 -4 of those days – always for physical ailments of some kind (cold, very severe cramps, other physical complaint). Sick days are for being sick; they’re not a vacation for me so I don’t usually feel that bad about taking them except I know how people look down on it, esp in this country which thinks you should be working while hemorrhaging or on your deathbed.
Aww, feel better soon!
And the Xanga God cannot die!
I was so ill when I was young that I rarely get sick these days. I’ve lived in pretty nasty conditions too. I’m mentally sick, but I rarely get the flu or anything or for very long. I actually spread disease. see, I’ll get it for an hour or so and then I’ll give it to everyone. Mom calls me the plague giver.
We get 4 sick/personal days a year to use, we have to use them or lose them so I take all four, generally only one due to actual illness.
if you die can i have your stuff?
Don’t die
This year I haven’t taken a sick day but I did leave work early on Saturday cause I get puking. I don’t think customers would have liked me serving them food.
When I did work, I used to cover other peoples shifts while shitting/barfing my brains out. I think I thought it would look good for me and generally, it did. But it never got me a raise or promotion. Now I’m a stay at home mom. My equivalent of calling in sick now is being pathetic and doing the bare minimum for my kids and around the house.
Now my old man…he’s got it good. He works for the county and gets like 12 sick days. With a doctor’s note, 3 days in a row only eats up one sick day so technically, he could get up to 36 sick days in a year. Generally, he feels guilty for calling in at all so he doesn’t do the 3 day thing unless he feels like he’s dying.
I used to work even when very sick being a self-employed robot..
Get better!
Oh and to answer your question, maybe three? not many at all. most of the time I would rather endure a day than to stay home and do nothing. being sick and working I think is much better than being sick and rotting. I like being productive.
i have about 4 weeks of sick time saved up
hope you feel better soon!
I don’t care how many sick days I have in a year, I just hope you get better soon :p :p :p
I guess I’m a sap for having not used them, but I haven’t used a sick day in over 20 years.
Our sick time is tied into our paid leave / vacation time so the option is… go to work sick and get a full two weeks off for fun or take a sick day here and there and get that detracted from your overall leave. Needless to say, when flu season rolls around we’re all still pulling the same hours and avoiding whoever has the worst symptoms. The irony of all this is the fact that I’m a paramedic. The stress of the job and the illnesses of our patients means every season is flu season and there’s a strong chance I’m playing Typhoid Mary the week before I get ill enough to wonder if I should take a day off.
@MCTCanadian - Just remember that he needs to die before the new year or the tax rate on his “stuff” goes up.
I don’t know. It depends. I’ve had more, in the last year, which stinks!
I hope you feel better, Dan!
Well there goes my theory about you being a robot.
non this last year, I’m a stay at home mom. I get to nurture and care for my toddlers through migraines, the flu, while they have the flu. It does not matter if death is at my door, as long as I’m breathing, I’m working.
I typically make it to work, then leave half day. Most of the time I try and rough-it-out.
Dear Dan,
“Pretty sure I’m dying.”

Seriously, we don’t have “sick time” at work anymore. Used to be six sick days a year. I hardly take sick leave and rarely take vacation time. I usually have at least three weeks piled up, so if I’m sick, I take a vacation day. So does everyone else.
Best job re: sick days was when I was in retail management at the Gemco chain. I got two weeks sick pay a year and never took the time. At the end of the year, I’d get a two week “paycheck”. I was ”paid” to not get sick at Gemco.

I get sick all the time but never call in. It’s awesome living in a place where you cant get any more hours so you have to just suck it up and work as much as you are allowed to, with no health insurance benefits… Dont worry though, I can be at 39 hours, but they will never give me that extra hour since I’d have to get insurance.. SMFH
The best policy is the military’s policy, you get sick, you go to sick call, and the doctor decides if you are too sick for work and for how many days. Seriously, never worried about being sick in the Navy.
just one; otherwise I went in all the time even though we had sick days.
You are not dying. You just wish you would die. I know how that feels. I am not allowed to miss work, so I don’t get sick, except on my days off.
None.
I am full time caregiver to my husband so I have be careful about not being around anyone who is ill so that I do not catch it.
I think I tend to use up more personal days than sick days…I almost never get sick. But I’m pretty damn moody.
I have PTO I can take it sick or just take it off to do whatever I want with. It’s 5 days per year. I get another 5 days of vacation. It’s not much but it’s alright i spose.
I want a day a month to be sick! I’m rarely sick, typically just seasonal allergies and those are easily treated with over the counter medications.
Hope you feel better soon!
I haven’t called in sick in years. But I’ve called in because my kid was sick.
Please live. If you die, who will write the blogs that make the whole world sing?
None. As I tell my reports, the only excuse for missing a day of work is a death in the family – YOUR OWN!!!
My warmest greetings to you it is a pleasure writing you
my name is carey, how are You?
I hope you are well sounded in good health over there in your country, I am a tender heart humble and respectful wish to be a friend. I will like to know more about you.

Since May of 2011 I’ve been a full-time mom. Sick days? What are those?? LOL. In the 8 months that I worked outside the home during pregnancy with Jack I missed one day of work due to illness and was 2 hours late due to weather and bald tires one time. A yearly average of maybe 2 days I guess. GET WELL SOON (I’ll be praying for you).
I’ve called off sick twice in the past year. Now that I’m full time I get 5 days a year, so I might take off an extra day next time I get sick.
me? a week or two annually. i used to be healthier, though.
This year I’ve been out a lot. We can miss 6 in a 6 month time but can be wrote up after 3 in that time do I’m not really sure bc we can also get fired after 6. I tend to try to go to work when scheduled.
being part time retail you don’t get sick days…call out and there’s just no pay…i take maybe one day per year off work…usually not even that…this year, however, i displaced my hip so had to take 2 weeks out then go back and not be able to function hardly at all…lucky for me some of them were sympathetic to my condition…lol…
hope you are feeling much better by now…>^,,^<
funny thing about sick days… it’s most often used and abused by people who aren’t sick, and the ones who ARE sick, come into work and rarely use it.
…….hope you get to feeling better; ……for me maybe 1 to 2 times a year, maybe….. either or get to feeling better, please….. Peace and prosperity…….
goodness 4 weeks?! what will you do with all that time? @korean_biyatch -
its weird cause when im really sick.. i actually come to work. I end up using a sick day for pure bullshit.
I used one Last Monday actually. 1) i was tierd from watching a late night showing of The Dark Knight Rises & I got sick from the food @ Chevy’s in Times Square..
I can get sick all I want, I just won’t get paid for it. I get sick only about once a year as well, but I’d have to be throwing up, or have my eyes swollen shut and my voice but a squeak to actually call in.
